========================MRN on the Road: Chicago ========================Race Directors don't get enough credit for putting on races; most of their effort is behind the scenes andrecognition from those of us who enjoy races is relatively rare. Carey Pinkowski, race director of theBank of America Chicago Marathon, is an exception. The City of Chicago has honored Carey with hisvery own honorary street sign at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Monroe. Others honored withstreet signs are Paul Harvey, Ann Landers, and the Magnificent Mile.

Between Amtrak and our feet, we don't need a car to visit family in Chicago. The weather hinted atSpring and we took advantage of the Lakefront Trail, Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, the MuseumCampus and the RiverWalk during a St. Patrick's Day visit. Everybody's Irish in Chicago on St.Patrick's Day. A highlight was a tour of the Chicago Tribune Tower, courtesy of son-in-law Brandon. We saw the newsroom, the 22nd floor deck with the view of Lake Michigan, and the 25th floor deckwhere we could see behind the Gothic flying buttresses and gargoyles.

=======================================================================Simon Bairu joins “best-ever” Canadian marathon field for Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront.=======================================================================TORONTO. March 17th. Organizers have confirmed that Simon Bairu will compete in this year'sScotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, October 16th. The addition of Bairu to the StartList sets the stage for what will arguably be the best-ever Canadian race over the classic 42.195kmdistance. He will join Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis and Rob Watson from Guelph's Speed River Club, andKingston's Dylan Wykes, who is currently training with Richard Lee's Lower Mainland Group inVancouver. Coolsaet, Gillis, Wykes and Watson are currently ranked #1, #2, #3 and #4 in theMarathon in Canada. Bairu set an impressive new Canadian 10,000m record of 27:23 last May, beforedropping out of his much-anticipated marathon debut in New York City in November.

Combined, the five athletes arguably represent the best group of men's marathoners that Canada hasever had — and certainly combined on the same starting line. When Coolsaet ran 2:11:23 at last year'sToronto Waterfront, it was the fastest marathon ever run by a Canadian on Canadian soil, and thefastest marathon by a Canadian in 24 years. It also gave him an Olympic qualifying standard forLondon 2012, with a sub-2:11:30. Gillis narrowly missed the challenging Athletics’ Canada standard, running 2:12:08 at STWM 2010, one place behind Coolsaet. Two months later, Wykes had a majorbreakthrough, taking his previous marathon best of 2:15:16 down to 2:12:39 in winning the CaliforniaInternational Marathon in Sacramento. Watson made his debut at the Houston Marathon in January ina disappointing 2:16:17 after passing halfway in 65:28. As Canadian 10K Road Champion and runner-up at the 2010 National Cross Country, he is favoured to do much better in his second outing. SimonBairu is considered by some to be the best of the group, following an outstanding career for Canada atshorter distances, capped by his a 13th place finish at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships[the first non-African] in March, and his impressive 10,000m record set on the track at Stanford lastMay.http://torontowaterfrontmarathon.com

=================================================================================Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - GRAND CANYON, LAS VEGAS, PHOENIX (Mar. 16- Mar 22) =================================================================================Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports:

Part IIWednesday evening I met up with a friend and we did a 5 mile run at Sunset Park. There was a 3/4

mile running loop in the park and the park is lighted at night. Baseball and soccer fields are all over thispark along with picnic benches on which to hang out. It's a nice park just outside the center city. As Idrive and walk around Las Vegas I find it to be a very nice place to live. You get one mile from the stripand it becomes just another city-- not an entertainment capital of the world. Lot's of recreationalactivities are everywhere. It's vacation land.

On Thursday I met up with one of my fellow Comrades runners, Joyce Forier. Joyce is the owner ofCalico Racing which puts on a variety of races in the Las Vegas area. Saturday she's hosting the RedRocks Canyon, half-marathon and marathon. Red Rocks is the Las Vegas Recreational hotspot 15 milesfrom downtown with lot's of hiking and scenic overlooks in the park. I helped Joyce load up her truckwith supplies for the race. She became a prophet as she told me in South Africa that she would put meto work on one of her races if I ever came to Vegas. Overall I enjoyed it as it keeps me in shape liftingboxes onto trucks for a couple of hours.

Friday I did my Bikram yoga at 7am and start looking for a different place to stay. I'm at theStratosphere and it's becoming a zoo because it's the center of the universe for the NASCAR crowd. This is a big race weekend here in Vegas and you don't get much sleep when that crowd is in town. It'san all night party time. Luckily I found a place out by the airport that was a little quieter. I was planningthe next part of my trip and I called the Grand Canyon because I got this crazy idea of hiking theCanyon. They had three nights lodging available: two nights at Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rimand one night at Phantom ranch at the bottom of the Canyon. I booked it and it started Sunday night.

Saturday morning is race day at Red Rocks Canyon. I ran the half marathon. It's a tough race as thefirst half climbs well over a 1000 feet of elevation. The second half is a moderate down hill to the finish. The course is one loop of the park drive. With over 900 runners, this is Joyce's biggest race. Everyonegot a medal and a super spread of food was available for all the finishers. A nice sunny 70 degree daymakes it a home run race to run sometime. Checkout the website at Calicoracing.com and find a racewhen you visit Las Vegas and get a race in out here in the desert.

Sunday comes and I'm packing up to leave and the phone rings. It's my friend Joyce. She needs somehelp to unload 1100 traffic cones. Good thing there were three of us to unload them. Two hours laterwe we're done and I'm on the road to the Grand Canyon. All the runners out there who don't see theeffort, that's what road race management is all about-- a lot of work.

I get to the Grand Canyon 5 hours later and see a couple of flakes of snow as I park my car at the Southrim right across from the Bright Angel lodge. Check in and I have a beer at the Bar. Three guys come inwho have been hiking through the Canyon. I tried picking their brains about how the trail is but theydidn't say much other than they had hiked 50 miles in the Canyon in a day's time. They said there wassome ice and snow in places. They were muddy from the knees down. I was going to find out onTuesday myself.

Monday morning I get up early and try tocatch the sunrise at 6:30 but it was cloudy sonot a picture-perfect sunrise. I walked alongthe south to Yaki Point and back to thelodge. Checked all the lodges, lookout points, visitor centers and rest areas. There's somuch history and scenery along this Canyonit's unbelievable. It's mostly a paved trailright along the rim. I must have walked 17miles. It was a partly cloudy day with the suncoming in and out and a few snow flurries. At 5pm it all changed, the clouds came in, itgot dark, the wind picked up and a blizzardcame in. It was a heavy wet snow and Icaught the bus back to the lodge. I haddinner and got ready for the big hike to thebottom of the Canyon the next day. I heardwind and snow all night long and I didn't know what to expect for morning.

I get up and there are 4 inches of snow with ice underneath. It's only 20 degrees out. I had my runningclothes on and running shoes with Yak Trax on them. Then caught the bus to the South Kaibab trailHead. I want adventure I'm getting it. Started hiking down that icy trail. Glad I had my Yak Trax. First

time I had ever used them. 2 miles into theCanyon the ice is gone and it's in the 40'salready. As I'm hiking down the Canyon it'struly amazing to see how the Canyon ischanging before your very eyes. Century's ofchange in just a few short miles of hiking. Irun into a train of mules dumping dirt alongthe trail to fix potholes. I was talking to themule master as he was guiding them and wehad a great conversation about the Canyon.A mile later I was crossing the bridge overthe mighty Colorado River. I try to thinkback what it must have been like for JohnWesley Powell-- one of the first explorers tonavigate the Colorado through this Canyon130 years ago. It must have been exciting anddangerous at the same time: the adrenalinerush. Half a mile later I walk into the world-famous Phantom Ranch. This is the third time I've been to the bottom of the Canyon and it will be myfirst time staying here for a night. I check in, drop off my bag and set off on a 6 mile hike to RibbonFalls. When I get there it's a small waterfall that over the years has left a mound of sentiment on therock below it-- pretty cool to see. Hike back to the ranch and get a great steak dinner. taken in advance of when you book your room there, none at the door as everything comes in daily bymule train. I stayed in a dorm room with 9 other hikers; it was like a hostel. There were three otherdorms, about 10 cabins and around 20 campsites. Everything was filled and many people book a yearin advance. I got in because of a cancellation.

I listened to the Ranger talk in the dark about the creation of the Canyon and the rock formations. Itwas really cool as I looked up in the sky and saw so many stars from the bottom of the most famousCanyon in the world.

I got a 5 am wake call for 5:30 breakfast. I loaded becauseI knew i was going for a hike I had always dreamedabout-- all the way to the north rim. It's 6am and I'm onthe trail as it's starting to get light out. I'm going lightwith my running clothes, hat, gloves, two bottles of water, and my Iphone to take pics. No phone reception isavailable in the Canyon. 6.5 miles later I stop at a campsite and talk to some hikers to see if they had hiked to thetop of the North Rim. They told me they didn't hike allthe way up there so they didn't know the conditions. Ididn't see anyone else for next 16 miles. I hiked for twomore miles to a place called Roaring Springs. This is thesource of the water for Phantom Ranch and the SouthRim. They have diverted water from somewhere at theNorth rim and pump it from here all the way to the SouthRim 16 miles away. Water at the South Rim used to bebrought in by rail car every day until the 1970's.

It was warming up so I get rid of my outer gear and wasdown to running shorts, a tech shirt, two bottles of waterthat I refilled in the streams and the Iphone. Had to maketime. The next 6 miles were some of the most beautifulscenery and challenging hiking I had ever done. This trailwas carved right into a wall of rock. The CCC (CivilianConservation Corps) built these trails in the 1930's. You could only imagine how they did it as it drops1000 feet straight down. There's no railing. It was icy in spots with boulders on the trail and a smallwaterfall to hike around. Good thing I had my Yak Trax. I made it to the tunnel which is 1.7 miles fromthe top. It was 11 am and I watched the clock knowing I can't be out here when it gets dark. I gavemyself one hour to make it to the top. Most of the rest of the way there was three feet of snow to gothrough and I'm at 8ooo feet. I said to myself "I may never be here again, just put the Eagle Scoutreceptors on and put the hammer down." Away I went-- re-adjusting the Yak Trax every now and then.As I sunk down in that snow past my knees, I knew that if anything happened to me up here nobodywas going to see me for awhile, like Saturday or Sunday when the weekend crowd comes up here.

When I stopped once, I didn't hear anything other than an occasional bird chirping. It was amazing tobe this deep in nature. I finally hit the North Rim. It's 12 noon so I had time on my side. Nobody isthere as the North Rim is closed from mid October to mid May. I can see why there's a lot of snowhere; it's a 1000 feet higher than the South Rim. I took pictures of the trail head signs and all the snowaround to prove I was there. I even ate a bunch of snow as my water was now gone. I'll refill on theway down. Dreams do come true as I had dreamed about hiking here for over 20 years. This truly was

one of the most awe-inspiring hikes I've ever done. It's as great asclimbing Mt Whitney, Mt Rainier, Mt Kilimanjaro. This is one of theworld's greatest hiking trails.

I started my descent, refilled the water bottles at a stream, and 4hours later I was back at the Phantom ranch. It's always easier to hikedown than up; you just have to be carefull not to fall over rocksbecause you don't lift your legs high enough. It felt good to be back atPhantom ranch. I still had some hiking to do because I didn't plan onstaying at the ranch for the night. I reloaded on trail mix and Snickersbars. Bought a flashlight and started hiking at 5:30 pm. It gets dark at7pm. I say goodbye to Phantom Ranch, cross the bridge and head upthe Bright Angel trail because it finishes at the lodges. The SouthKaibab trail is 6 miles from the lodge and buses don't run late. Thistrail has many potholes on it as this is the most-used trail in theCanyon. It was a slow go. I hit the half way point up to the Rim atIndian Gardens. It's pumping station for water but there are springshere so there are a lot of trees and vegetation in this part of theCanyon. That's how it got it's name. I had been hiking for about anhour with this flashlight. It was starting to get a little dim. I hiked foranother hour and it quit just three miles from the top. I couldn't seethe trail anymore so like a good Boy Scout I called it a night and hitthe Eco Friendly bathroom for the night. It had a light in it, protectedme from the cold and the park rangers keep it clean and it didn'tsmell. I stayed there until 6 am when it became light out. Those lastthree miles were steep, with lot's of potholes before the steps and icynear the top because it dropped below freezing that night. Yak Traxcame in handy again. Next I saw a mule train carrying supplies downto the Phantom Ranch. It took two hours to finish the hike and whenI got done, I thought I had just run Comrades again. I hurt all over. Iadded up all the mileage and it was 56 miles in two days. It was aspectacular hike and I would highlyrecommend you put this on your bucket list. You won't bedisappointed but I wouldn't tell any body else to do it in 2 days. 3 to4 days would be better. I rested for a few hours, took a shower andstarted driving to Phoenix.

My drive to Phoenix took me through Flagstaff-- the winterplayground of Arizona. I went by the big ski resort of Snowbowl.Snowbowl is right next to Mt Humphrey, a 12,000 foot plusmountain. Lot's of snow there. The cross country ski center was justdown the road. This is a big training area for distance runners. Theyhave told me there are lot's of trails to train on here. It looked like agreat place for recreation so I'm sure the runners love it here.

I drove through Sedona, the beautiful Red Rock area, on my way toJerome. Jerome is an old copper mining town that, in the early1900's, was one of the largest copper mines in the world. The mines

are closed now and the town hasbecome a haven for artists. The townis on a hill and you can see for 50miles all through the Sedona Valley. This is a phenomenal view at sunset asthe colors come to light with thesetting sun. I met a person there fromMunising (Michigan) who was therestaurant manager at the old GrandHotel there. His grandparents ownedland in the Munising at Pictured Rocksbefore it became a park. No matterwhere I go I meet people fromMichigan. This is a neat little town. Aguy told me about a little ghost miningtown one mile away that is really cool.It was at closing when he talked to meabout it but if you're in Jerome checkit out. It's an out of the way place andit's different and different is good.

I finally got to Phoenix late and tired. This was going to be a rest stop beforegoing home. Hung out with somefriends and did some Bikram yoga tostretch my body out. On Saturday Ivolunteered at the Spartan Race, an 8mile obstacle course. Runners jumpover a fire pit, run through a mud pit,go through a small tunnel, climb overa 10 foot wall, crawl under barb wirein the mud and traverse a 20 foot wallby holding onto 2 by 4 pegs. When youdon't make through each obstacle you

have to do 30 burpees which is a combo of a pushup and standing up real fast. It was crazy and fun tobe a volunteer and direct the runners where to go. I would have done it but my legs were trashed outfrom the Canyon hike. This is a traveling race series so to see where the next one is check outhttp://Spartanrace.com 1000 runners there had a blast.

Sunday I went to the Scottsdale Art Festival. It had some great southwest artists there along with somesuper bands playing a variety of music. Reminds me of when summer comes to Michigan and festivalsare everywhere. Early Tuesday morning I drive back to Albuquerque to turn in my Volkswagen Bug. Idrove 2600 miles out there. It's a long way between cities in the desert Southwest. The drives are worthit with all the fantastic scenery. As I hop on the plane I know I'll be back again. Come out here for avacation or running trip you won't forget.

Staying on the road.-- Gary Morgan.
