From the President…Dear Fellow Golfers,

One of the great things that I have foundwith being involved with the MichiganPublinx Golf Association is not only thepassion we have for our sport but the gen-eral caring for the health of our members.Over the past few years we have had a fewof us develop some serious health issues. Most of us have survived and some havenot. But the one bottom line that is thesame there will be several members rallyaround our member.

For those of you that know me it is ashort step for me to get on my soap box.Having watched my mother-in-law go thruseveral months of agony being the result ofmany years of smoking it is very easy forme to make that step to my soap box.

Recently Johnny O suffered a seriousheart issue. He has asked me to publish thefollowing letter and therefore I have afriend on the soap box with me to carry thismessage.

Dear fellow Publinx Players,My name is Johnny O. Many of you know me personally, some of you don’t

know me at all.I started in the Publinx at Rogell in 1990’s . I played with Gary Cauzillo who

has passed from cancer. I don’t know a lot of the guys in the Publinx but I wouldlike to play 18 holes with you some time in the future.

On April 27th I suffered a heart attack at the age of 41. I appeared healthy onthe outside but cigarettes and a bad diet were hurting me on the inside. The rea-son for this letter is to simply make us all aware of the damage cigarettes andcheeseburgers can do. Whether or not I know you or will be paired with you in thefuture, I don’t want to lose any of you due to smoking. Please quit or cut back asmuch as possible. I can’t wait to be back on the fairways and see all the guysagain. Stay healthy and keep it in the short grass.

Sincerely, Johnny O

Johnny,

We all wish you a speedy recovery and know you will be back in the short grass again soon!

Sincerely,

Jim Ellis, President, Michigan Publinx Golf Association

Anatomy of a Publinxer

I am writing this article sit-ting in an airport, ready to go toGermany for work along withwatching the 2012 Player’sChampionship. I have beendoing a lot of self reflectionrecently and wondering whatthe heck do I really want to getout of this game we lovebecause right now I really donot enjoy it. I need to prefacethis viewpoint a little. This pastMonday I attempted to qualifyfor the Michigan Amateur atEdgewood Country Club. Iwanted to take the time to diag-nose this round a little bitbecause of what I had learned, mainly how my emotionsaffected my play throughoutthis round, good and bad.

Amateurs put a high level ofpressure on themselves in everyround they play, whether it isthe weekend warrior, or the guytrying to qualify for scratchlevel state amateur or state openevents. The weekend warriormay only play 1 day per week,so the pressure this person putson him/herself is to score theirbest in their limited opportuni-ties. However, there is at differ-ent level of pressure then thequalifier because they will beback on the golf course the fol-lowing week trying to accom-plish their goal of beating theirbest score the following week. The amateur that plays in quali-fiers has a make or break men-tality because they do not havean opportunity to make anotherqualification attempt until thefollowing year. This is the caseI will focus on, more important-ly why we put too much pres-sure on these events. In all hon-esty, these qualifiers are nolonger fun to play in unless themindset is changed. I have beenplaying in state amateur quali-fiers since I was 21 years old. This year was my 13th attemptto qualify for the MichiganAmateur, I have qualified 3 outof those 13 times, three years in

a row actually. I think I shouldbe focusing on what I did duringthose three years and not writ-ing an article about handlingemotions! Ha ha!

What has changed over those13 years? I got married, I havethree children, I have been pro-moted at couple of times, changed companies, and amworking on a new work projectthat requires me to travel a weekper month. Those are all excus-es for THIS YEAR!! I believe Ihave become more efficientwith my golf swing, I under-stand how to hit more shots, Ican read the golf course better, and I spend 2 months of the yearcoaching a high school golfteam. I should be better, youknow why I am not, emotions,self-induced pressure, and notbeing wise enough to under-stand that life is really biggerthan individual qualifiers. Ireceived some unintended greatadvice one day from my friendand fellow publinxer, DaveVaclav. Dave and I were talkingabout our kids and he said howgreat it is that he can play awfulon the golf course, go home, and his kids do not care at allwhat he shot that day, only thathe is home ready to play soccer, have a game of catch, or what-ever interests them at themoment. Wow is Dave everright! I missed qualifying by 2shots and the first thing thathappened when I got home isthat all my kids ran up to hugme and my oldest (5 year old)asked me to go outside andpitch baseballs to him for bat-ting practice. They knew I wasplaying golf, and they know Ilove playing it. That morningthey gave me a cursory “goodluck” in the morning, not know-ing really what for, but theirworld and focus is completelydifferent. Not all of us havekids so I do not want to send themessage to having kids takesthe stink off a bad round of golf.

We all have things in our livesthat we perceive more impor-tant (insert soothing mechanismhere). How can we change orsimplify our mindset, almost tothe level of a child?

I am not sure how to simplifythis thought process but walk-ing through my emotionalround of golf may trigger someideas. This may be familiar toyou, it may not, and you justmight think I am crazy but hereit goes anyway. Stepping up onthe first tee I had confidence, hita conservative tee shot, drew abad lie, left the ball in a goodspot short of the green, goodchip, missed a 5-foot par putt.Oh well, piped a nice tee ballinto the heart of the fairway, conservative 7 iron to middle ofgreen 25 feet away, putted it upto 2 feet, mark and wait myturn, hop up there, and missedit! Uh oh! Now for some rea-son my brain flipped into panicmode? Why? My initial thatwas that I knew from playingEdgewood before in qualifiers itwill take 2-3 over par to qualify,I am still within the number. My thoughts should be that sim-ple, you are in good shape, don’t panic, but no it can’t bethat simple to keep that train ofthought. I stand on the third teebox and all I am thinking aboutis that I need to now get thosetwo shots back. The third holeat Edgewood is a 476 yard dogleg left with out of bounds allthe way down the left side. Mytypical miss on the golf courseis a conservative block (right ofthe target for right a hander),typically! Standing on this teebox thinking I have to sweepone around the corner to try toget there in 2 shots to set up aneasy birdie. Why! Why is mythought process on the tee notjust target and all I care about isa conservative target? I will tellyou, self inflicted pressure! Why, no one in my family caresif I make the Amateur, my lega-

cy will not be predicated ontournament success. My legacyis how my children turnout, how much fun my wife and Iwill have in our lives, growingrelationships with my friends, the difference I can make atwork whether through leader-ship or new ideas that will helpthe company reduce costs. Whyam I putting this pressure onmyself? Because I have 1chance to make it this year, mythought that I HAVE to qualify! That is me, my boss (home &work) did not tell me I had tomake it.

On my tee shot I make a com-pletely nerved swing and snipehook one that luckily hits a treeand stays in bounds. I trudge itdown the fairway forced myselfto think that I needed to hole outa wedge for birdie, so I hit itover the green and make doublebogey. OK, I think to myselfget a hold of myself. I start ask-ing for rain. My mind changedfrom score to weather, that wasmy focus. I proceed to make acouple of pars and a bogey inthe next three holes. I am nowat 5 over through 6 holes. Thisscore is not a killer this early, itis not easy to rebound, but notimpossible. I know I can makebirdies, I have not made a bunchthis year but I think I got it inme. C’mon, I want to tellmyself, make it that simple, charge. No that is not mythought process I am thinking Ineed to make it up in one swing!I proceed to make triple on 7, Ileave a second shot in a greenside bunker worried that I mighthit a long bunker shot out ofbounds over the green, why!No I did not think about the shotI was concerned with a negativeresult. C’mon get it together! Now I know I am dead, 8 overafter 7 holes. I play defeatedover the next couple of holes. Itwas raining hard so I just

thought of survival simplyadvancing the ball in play. I pro-ceed to put the ball in play, ontothe green, 2-putt par. I makethree pars in a row simplifyingthis thought process. I did notrealize I was actually doing this, wow I am just playing the game, nothing more. After this string ofpars we get yanked off the coursefor 2 hours due to rain pooling upon the greens. Just what I need, extend this day! Instead of cry-ing the blues I took the time tocatch up with friends at the qual-ifier, laugh and get ready to goback out, I will not quit! I knewwhat I had to do, play theremaining 7 holes 4 under par tohave a chance, really? Why notlet’s take that mindset, can’t hurt.I went out in this stretch of 7holes and made 4 birdies, part ofthat was making birdies on thefinal 3 holes. Interesting! Whathappened in this stretch? Nofear, nothing to lose, just play, and have fun. Why the hell did Iput all that pressure on myself inthe beginning, if I had startedfrom this simple mindset I mayhave been more successful. Ihated playing golf for the major-ity of that day. Why did I notrealize it was the greatest dayever (outside of my wedding dayor birth of my kids). My cellphone is turned off, no kids orwife bothering me, vacationfrom work, and great companyplaying with friends, Jim Dalesand Jim Rowe. What is wrongwith me? What kind of messageam I sending not only my kids, but the high school kids I coach?I think I can surmise that a good, positive, simple mindset is what Ineed to do not only for qualifiersbut for the rest of the season.

Alright I am drawing a line inthe sand for the rest of the yearstarting with the next time I playgolf when I get back in town Iwill take the mindset of enjoyingplaying golf! I will place thesegoals in three categories, #1enjoy hitting good shots! Notmany people can hit many good

shots in a round, I am not special,so I should enjoy it, no selfinduced pressure. The secondcategory, enjoy or accept hittinga bad shot, because there is nowa challenge of getting this missedshot up and down. The great BenHogan used to say he only hit 5shots per round like he reallywanted! Five of a ballpark 67shots, 7% of his shots! Who amI to think will be 100% success-ful? Reality check! The third isto enjoy being around peoplewith like interests in golf. Don’tpout, don’t come in after a roundand because you shot 78, and sayyou played terrible. Someone inyour party could be real excitedabout shooting 79 and here youare making a big deal that 78 isterrible. How do you think thatguy feels? A great friend of mineand another fellow publinxer,John Leach, said we are not thatgood to care that much. Truerwords could not be spoken, weare not getting paid to play, wedon’t have $5000 swing/shortgame instructors on call, we needto accept who we are an enjoy it.Take this as advice, do not raiseyour heart rates, is it really thatimportant?

I track my rounds of golf andthey are totaling between 35 – 45rounds per year, I am luck to playthat much. This number willdwindle over the next few yearsso it should be a priority to enjoythose every year and not put toomuch pressure on them becausethey quickly turn out to be miser-able with my old mindset. Let’ssee! I will take make myself atest case or guinea pig. I willtake on the task of this new sim-plified motto going into eachround for the balance of the sea-son, and in a later edition of thisarticle I will report back to youall and it either succeed or notimprove and I will be very hon-est and let you know the resultsin either direction.

Amateurs went nose to nose to claim this years

bragging rights.

The Michigan PGA (Professional Golf

Association of Michigan) team was Tom

Harding, Kevin Muir, Randy Erskine, Ron

Beurmann, TJ Roberts, Pat Markley, John

Seltzer, Jack Seltzer, Charles Pasco, Bob

Ackerman, Brian Dice and Brian Cairnes.

The GAM (Golf Association of Michigan)

team was Casey Baker, Bill Zylstra, Greg

Reynolds, Tom Werkmeister, Mike Ignasack,

Dan Ellis, Jared Dalga, Steve McKalco, Jerred

Barley Scott Jaschuk, Nick Dennis and

Michael Coriasso.

In the morning team matches the GAM

team finished with a slim one-point advantage

(3.5 to 2.5). The teams of

Werkmeister/Ignasack, Ellis/Dalga,

Dennis/Coriasso each grabbed a victory

while Baker/Reynolds chipped in with a tie.

In the afternoon single matches the GAM

team was looking to repeat their 2011 victory

by winning the first four out of five matches

but the PGA Team had different ideas. The

PGA team captured four out of the last five

matches to capture 6.5 points and pull to a tie.

Because the GAM team held the cup from

2011 they retained the cup for another season.

South East Michigan will be the home for the 2012 StateMatch Play Championship. It’s been many many years sincethis title has been claimed in the Motor City Area.

For the past several years this championship has been heldin a Northern Michigan atmosphere or the warm rural country-side of West Michigan.

Breaking from the norm, in 2012 Blackheath Golf Courseand Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club both in Rochester HillsMichigan will host the SMP Championship.

These are two fine venues that will offer a great challengefor all players.

The following information is a brief overview for eachcourse and what lies ahead for the players in this year’s tour-nament.

Blackheath Golf CourseBlackheath opened in 1998 and was designed and construct-

ed by Kevin Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich’s inspiration to develop thisstyle of layout was brought on by a visit to Scotland. On thistrip, he learned of the two unique types of layouts that could beoffered by this type of topography and he was able to producea gem in Rochester, MI.

There are two types of courses in the birthplace of golf, which are heathland and links styles. A heathland course isbuilt from farmland and lies inland from the sea. Links cours-es on the other hand sit next to the sea. As opposed to a linksdesign with the bumpy fairways and deep bunkers, a heathlandcourse offers gently rolling fairways and flat bunkering.

The name “blackheath” itself comes from the honorablesociety of men, which is said to be the first to establish a clubin England that was actually outside of Scotland.

The course sits on 128 acres. It features a good test of golffor both men and ladies of all skill levels. Playing to par of 71the course offers four sets of tees, challenging bunkering, andundulating greens that make for a true but fair round of golf.

Blackheath has already earned quite a reputation.Blackheath was selected to host the United States AmateurSectional qualifier in 1998. Crain’s Detroit Business ratedBlackheath as a top 5 must play in Michigan. Blackheath wasalso awarded 3 1 2 stars by Golf Digest.

Twin Lakes Golf And Swim ClubTwin Lakes Golf Club in Rochester Hills is a four star (Golf

Digest Places to Play) Jerry Matthews designed golf coursefeaturing wide sweeping fairways and huge contoured putting

surfaces. This links influenced layout traverses mildly undulat-ing terrain with numerous wetlands and water hazards alongthe way. Those who have not visited in the past couple of yearswill be surprised at the growth that has taken place in thisupscale residential community, as beautiful homes line manyfairways and form a significant backdrop behind many of thegreen complexes in this 1,000 acre countryside development.

Golf properties do not usually warrant a 4-star rating with-out providing a nice package of amenities, and the list at TwinLakes is an impressive one. First of all, two huge practicegreens rest between the clubhouse and first tee, with a massivegrass range nearby. The short game area includes a chippingarea and sand bunker, perfect for a warm up or for a morningor afternoon of practice. The clubhouse features an upscale proshop, plus lockers and showers for men and women. Therestaurant and lounge is wonderfully appointed, and the land-scaped outdoor patio is a great place for parties and receptions, and presents views of a natural area that rests immediatelybehind the clubhouse.

The service here is outstanding - worthy of private clubexperiences. Crain’s Detroit has awarded Twin Lakes with thehonor of recognition as the # 1 Women Friendly Course in SEMichigan. There are twenty seven holes on property - the newWoods nine opened for public play in 2006, and providesgolfers with a Northern Michigan experience featuring eleva-tion changes, rolling fairways bound by mature trees, andspectacular marshlands populated with herons and indigenouswildlife.

This layout plays to distance measuring 3414, 3172, 3029,2831 and 2322 yards, and is located in a serene environment, with no residential properties situated alongside. There arequite a few forced carries over marsh, though like the originaleighteen, the carries are reasonable from the white and forwardtees. We highly recommend that you include the Woods in anyTwin Lakes golf experience. The Estates nine also has 5 sets oftees that play to 3502, 3301, 3160, 2856 and 2507 yards, whilethe Links nine measures 3243, 3015, 2849, 2548 and 2113yards. The slope ratings of the 27 holes vary between 109 and133.

Teaching philosophy focuses on

positive communication and use

of drills to create an exciting

learning opportunityThis is one of my favorite practice stationsfor putting! I found some red string, and twoskewers from the camping section. Cut thestring about 9’ long and tie it to the loops onskewers. Stick them in the ground in linewith the hole and start putting. If your put-ter has a line on it your goal is to make thatline disappear from sight which gets the put-ter face to aim squarely to the line. This getsthe golfer that has trouble aiming the faceand getting the ball to start on line improv-

ing in minutes. An added touch is to create agate just wide enough for the ball to passusing two golf tees. Practice from 3’, 6’, and8’. More putts will start falling!
