THEN & NOW: Grandma, Grandpa, and I

First grade students interviewed their grandparents to see if they played or did similar or different things when they were the same age.

Guyana AmericaWhen my grandma and grandpa were six years old they lived in Guyana. Their favorite games to play were…Spin the Bottle, Hopscotch, Jump Rope and Hide and Seek.

Now, I am six years old. I live in America. The games I like to play are…Clapping Rhyme Games, Duck Duck Goose, and Video Games.

INDIA AMERICA THEN NOW When my grandma was

little six years old, she celebrated her birthday by wearing a new linga.

She also kneeled down and touched the feet of her parents as a sign of respect.

Then she and her family visited a shrine, where they prayed and she was blessed.

Now I am six years old. I celebrate my birthday by having parties with lots of balloons and streamers.

I invite a lot of my friends and families.

I have birthday cakes topped with lighted candles.

Everyone sings the "happy

birthday" song to me.

Mexico AmericaWhen my grandparents

was 6 years old and they loose a tooth they would leave their tooth in a box on their bedside table.

Then they’ll hope that El Raton, the magic mouse, will take their tooth and bring them some money. He leaves more money for a front tooth.

Now that I am six years old, I put my tooth under my pillow. While I’m in dreamland, the Tooth Fairy will come into my room, take my tooth, and leave some money in its place. I’M RICH! I’M RICH!

National Anthem The Star Spangled of Colombia Banner

When my Grandparents were 6 years old they lived in Colombia. They went to school in Colombia. When they were in school they would say the National Anthem of Colombia.

Now that I am 6 years old and I live in the United States of America, I say The Star Spangled Banner every morning in my classroom.
