Metro Public Transit Is 50 Years Old Fifty years ago in 1958, the first Metro (Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority) became the owner and operator of transit in Los Angeles. It marked a new era in the region when for the first time transit was under public control with a governing board of local o;cials.

For some $40 million, LAMTA purchased the equipment, facilities and routes of two private companies: Metropolitan Coach Lines (formerly the Paci>c Electric Railway and Asbury Rapid Transit Lines) and Los Angeles Transit Lines (formerly Los Angeles Railway).

The LAMTA had originally been formed in 1951 to study the feasibility of building a monorail line between the San Fernando Valley and Long Beach. That proposal was eventually shelved in favor of looking into establishing a subway system.

The original Metro became the Southern California Rapid Transit District in 1964 operating the bus system and eventually breaking ground on the long awaited subway. In 1993, it became the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

New Metro Rapid lines will begin serving the San Fernando Valley, Central and South Central LA this month.
