Operation Purpose
• What steps that you do in order to be able
to create a product?
• Does this operation serve a useful
purpose?
• Is this operation really needed? Are there
ways to eliminate or combine it?
All the dresses, gowns and uniforms that they make
go through the same process. It starts with measuring,
making a pattern, cutting, sewing, and the finishing that
includes the ironing of the finished product, attachment of
buttons which is done manually.
It serves a useful purpose, because through those
operations, they are able to create dresses and uniforms
where they can earn a living.
Yes, all of the operations are needed and there is no
way to reduce or eliminate it because clothes are made
step by step.
Part Design
• Is it difficult for you, that the designs of the
product will come from the customers?
• How do you reduce processing
operations?
• How do you utilize better materials?
At first, it is difficult for them to create the same
design given by the customers. But then, they try their best
to be able to meet the customer’s requirements and also
the deadline.
There is no way that they can reduce their
operations because all of the operations are essential and
needs to be executed in sequence.
Materials to be used are ordered by them to trusted
suppliers from Divisoria, Makati and Taal. And they make
sure that it is of high standard.
Tolerances and Specification
• What do you do in order to prevent
malfunctions with the clothes that you
create when worn by the customers?
They add extra allowance to make sure that when a
fabric shrinks, the risk that the clothes will be smaller to the
customer is reduced.
Material
• Are your materials expensive or
affordable?
• Is it abundant?
• How can you assure the quality of the
materials to be used?
• Do you consider using substitutes, that is
less expensive but of the same standard
and quality?
The materials price vary depending on the type of
fabric to be used and also according to the customers
request. Materials are abundant, there won’t be any
problem in searching for those.
They can assure that the materials have a high
quality, because they get it from trusted suppliers. When
defects in fabric occur, like for example when they know
that a fabric shrinks after being washed, they are the one
who makes adjustment by providing a bigger allowance.
They consider and suggests substitutes to
customers that prefer materials which is less expensive but
of the same quality.
Manufacturing Sequence &
Tools
• What are sequence in making a product?
• Do you find it more efficient?
• What other sequence do you use?
• Do you consider using machines or prefer
doing things manually?
The sequence in making a dress:
It starts with measuring, making a pattern, cutting, sewing,
and the finishing that includes the ironing of the finished
product, attachment of buttons which is done manually.
They find it efficient because through following those
steps, they can finish a set of product in about one and a
half hour. There are no other sequence that they use
because it is already the simplest form. Machines are a
great help to them because they can finish a product
without consuming too much time, and also they provided a
generator in case that there is no electricity.
Setup, Tools and Fixtures
• Will the setup, fixtures or tools be used
enough to justify their expense?
Yes, because all the tools and machine are used
frequently that they can recover the expense when they
bought it, and for its maintenance.
Material Handling
• How do you store your materials, where?
• Do you make sure of it if it is properly
stored?
• Do you have any systematic way of storing
it? To reduce time spent in making up
material?
They store their materials inside their office, where
there are cabinets provided that the fabrics are arranged
according to color, texture or type.
Materials are assured to be properly stored,
according to the label on its container that indicates a fabric
to be placed in a cool place, away from sunlight.
Having a systematic way of storing materials helps
reduce time in the production.
Plant Layout
• How did you place materials, tools, and
machine, according to what?
• Did you consider having a plant layout?
Product layout? Process?
Materials, tools, and machines are placed inside the
working station according to function, they find it more
efficient because it is easier that the machines are close to
each other. Tools are stored in containers, and placed in
the working station where it is frequently or most used.
They considered the both types of layout because
machines are placed in the order that it is used and at the
same time it is grouped by type.
No operation can be eliminated nor combined. All of
the process should be done one at a time because
according to them, “We don’t make clothes as fast as we
could, because we make sure that the quality wouldn’t
be sacrificed”. Time doesn’t matter to them, because they
are not required to reach a specific number of finished
products per day as long as they can meet the deadline for
delivery or pick-up.
