HEALTH SCIENCES 2017/2018 IN REVIEW     Message from the Dean    Deborah Chigazola,     RDHAP, MS This has been a year that none of us will forget. I both celebrated the arrival of my first grandson, Lucas, and helped my community through the devastating Northern California wildfires. As you review the school year in Health Sciences you will see some real “Grit”. Our faculty and students did not miss a beat during and after the fire storms. You will see stories of bravery, courage, and accomplishment, which only happen due to perseverance, passion, and effort.   Last August I asked faculty and staff to consider reading Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. The theory is talent x effort = skill, skill x effort = achievement. Notice it takes twice as much effort. This is where the “grit’ comes into play. There are lots of examples and stories to support her research. I recommend this book for a good summer read.  I see “grit” every day in the success of our graduates and the dedication of the faculty and staff. Those who lost their homes and all their possessions stayed strong and were supported by all the rest of the SRJC family.   I wish everyone some time to reflect on the past year and also time to heal and rededicate yourself to the mission of SRJC. I like to think of myself as a life changer, truly believing that education changes lives. As a firstgeneration college student that started at a California Community College (CCC) I know that my life and family would not have been the same without the CCC system which includes all the faculty and staff that dedicate their time and energy to the students.   Thank you all for all you do every day for our students! Deb Associate Degree Nursing Program Peggy Goebel, faculty in the ADN program, was deployed to Houston to work with the Red Cross in providing disaster relief to the people who were directly affected by Hurricane Harvey.    The Associate Degree in Nursing program hosted a “Family Night” for new students to welcome families and share information about the nursing program with them. This is done to promote student success. It was a wellattended, fun night for all.   Anna Valdez was interviewed for an article in the Emergency Nurses Association Connection on Head Injury prevention. She has been actively involved in injury prevention at the national level for many years.   Orientation for the spring ADN cohort occurred on Friday, November 3, 2017. All incoming students attended and had excellent presentations by nursing, scholarship, financial aid, counseling, and others.  1

Message from the Dean Deborah Chigazola RDHAP MS

This has been a year that none of us will forget I both celebrated the arrival of my first grandson Lucas and helped my community through the devastating Northern California wildfires As you review the school year in Health Sciences you will see some real ldquoGritrdquo Our faculty and students did not miss a beat during and after the fire storms You will see stories of bravery courage and accomplishment which only happen due to perseverance passion and effort Last August I asked faculty and staff to consider reading Grit The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth The theory is talent x effort = skill skill x effort = achievement Notice it takes twice as much effort This is where the ldquogritrsquo comes into play There are lots of examples and stories to support her research I recommend this book for a good summer read I see ldquogritrdquo every day in the success of our graduates and the dedication of the faculty and staff Those who lost their homes and all their possessions stayed strong and were supported by all the rest of the SRJC family I wish everyone some time to reflect on the past year and also time to heal and rededicate yourself to the mission of SRJC I like to think of myself as a life changer truly believing that education changes lives As a first‐generation college student that started at a California Community College (CCC) I know that my life and family would not have been the same without the CCC system which includes all the faculty and staff that dedicate their time and energy to the students Thank you all for all you do every day for our students

Radiologic Technology Program

Radiologic Technology graduated all 20 students of the class of 2017 cohort in a beautiful ceremony at Carole Ellis Auditorium at the Petaluma campus Making the occasion that much more memorable was that all 20 have passed the national board certifying exam on their first attempt Parenthetically at least half of our graduates have already been offered employment as technologists

Radiologic Technology students from both cohorts participated at the Sonoma Valley Community Health Fair last Saturday We talked about various imaging modalities in the radiologic sciences and made folks aware that SRJC offers this educational program Additionally we distributed information regarding the Health Occupations Program Education (HOPE) Program a Student Support Services TRIO grant offering assistance and resources for first generation college students navigating student financial aid programs benefits and resources for locating public and private scholarships and assistance in completing financial aid applications

In October Radiologic Technology students from both cohorts attended the Radiologic Technology Certification Committee meeting in Sacramento The RTCC is the advisory committee representing the interest of radiologic technologists and radiologic technology schools to the

California Department of Public HealthRadiologic Health branch The students got to see the legislative process in action on issues that will affect their career and profession
