Senate, University Graduate Council, University Graduate Programs Committee and other
groups. Reports directly to the University Provost and serve on various committees, councils,
and work teams. Academic faculty responsibilities include limited doctoral dissertation
supervision, mentoring an undergraduate research team, and advising select graduate students.

blind peer reviewing and editing approximately 1050 pages of published scholarship annually.
Manage manuscript reviews through ScholarOne and manuscript publication processes through
CATS. Represent the Journal with professional associations and individuals. Work
collaboratively with a publishing team at the Taylor and Francis headquarters in Philadelphia,

Served over 8 years as president and CEO of a two-campus community college in rural Central
Appalachia (service area - 5 counties, 2,000 square miles). Followed a founding president of
27 years and led the college through an era of change. Reported to a State Chancellor and
Local Board of Directors. During tenure, four buildings were funded (27 million dollars), most
of which included collaborative partnerships with K-12 schools, a technical college, and
universities. Other accomplishments included increasing campus diversity and senior minority
leadership and improved visibility in the community, state, and nation.

Leading a team of colleagues with the development and implementation of the first
undergraduate leadership course (LDR 2010) and enrolled 103 students Spring, 2013.
Wrote, taught and revised a seminar course for higher education doctoral students on how to
succeed in the doctoral program, including dissertation matriculation. Taught the course Fall
2006, Fall 2008, Fall 2010, Spring 2011 and Fall 2012. Wrote an online course for Organization
and Administration of Higher Education, Spring 2012 for 2013 delivery. Lead efforts to revised
six courses for new prefix designations “higher education” and a new undergraduate course in

Strong record of resource development, including grants, contracts, and legislative
appropriations for institutional projects and programs, especially while serving as an

1994-1999 Telecommunications and Health Center Grant – $335,000 from United States
Appalachian Regional Commission to establish a pilot student health center in a rural college
with telemedicine support; the only program of its type at that time. This program provided the
basis for two refereed articles in 2000 and 2003,and was described in Senator Bill Bradley’s
1996 book, Time Present Time Past (New York, NY: Knopf).
1998 Wellness Center Special Legislative Appropriation – $103,000 from the Kentucky
Legislature to support the health and wellness programming efforts connected to the federally
funded student health clinic. This program also provided the basis for the two refereed articles
cited above.

Program Grant – $150,000 from the Ford Foundation of New York to support
community and college planning, economic development and leadership activities.
1998 East Kentucky Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Appropriation-
$2.6 million from the Kentucky Legislature for the funding of a campus building to house a
community-based science, math and technology building.
1997 Telecommunications Systems Grant – $26,000 from the United States Department
of Agriculture to support instructional telecommunications programs.
1997 Workforce Training Center Grant – $278,975 from the United States Appalachian
Regional Commission to establish and equip a workforce training classroom.
1993-1999 Numerous grants, special appropriations, and gifts –
Over $24 million from the Kentucky Legislature, Kentucky Transportation Department, and

Note: Each year, while serving as president, the college received competitive external funds

Florida Atlantic University – Resource Development
2004-present CAPTURE Project: Computer Accelerated Pipeline to Unlock Regional
Excellence.
$3.1 Million over 5 years. Co-PI with three other colleagues.
Collaborative partnership with Broward College, Palm Beach State College and Florida Atlantic
University to increase baccalaureate attainment and fill workforce gaps for skilled computer
professionals in Florida.
2013-2014 Feasibility of an Undergraduate Leadership Studies Program at Florida Atlantic

undergraduate research initiative.
2011-present Student Affairs and Higher Education Program Funding. - $25,000 approximate
annually. Fiscal support from the Division of Student Affairs for a graduate assistant and

2010-2013 Graduate Education Recruitment Grant Funding – $37,500 awarded to higher
education program for assistance with recruitment and marketing. Funding was used to leverage
matching resources for graduate assistants across the university, especially in student affairs
areas. A recruitment event and promotional items also was a part of the grant project.
2005-2007 Higher Education (Student Affairs) Internship Funding – $10,000 awarded to the
higher education program as “seed money” to begin the development of an internship program
for higher education graduate students. Funding was increased to $20,000 for FY 2006-2007 and
steadily increased thereafter. (Graduate assistant funded for the Higher Education Program
beginning 2011 and continuing to present.)
2008-2010 Unfunded proposals included: 1) a priority research project about the community
college baccalaureate (FAU- made first cut, but was not funded) and 2) an externally funded
proposal with computer science faculty about student engagement (NSF).

Advised Bill Bradley’s for President Campaign on policy issues (1999-2000).

Testified before Kentucky’s General Assembly several times on various issues including
transportation, governance of higher education, health and wellness and funding (1993-
1996).
Appointed by the Kentucky Senate President and Speaker of the House as the only
community college representative to a task force to make recommendations to the 1996
Legislative Session on higher education issues (1995).

The University of Kentucky – Leadership Award (principal value approximately $32,000 and
several scholarship awards have been awarded since 2000). This award is designated for a
community college transfer student.
Texas A & M University-Commerce – Leadership Award ($10,500 approximate value with
several scholarship awards since 2006).
