I am very excited to be the new editor of Merivale, as this area of Christchurch is one close to my heart. I have always loved the suburb and it is amazing to see how it is forever reshaping and developing. Life has been injected into it with the addition of high-end retailers, top restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. No wonder Merivale is such a sought-after location.

I have seen Merivale – the place I call home – go through many changes and transitions over the years. Thankfully, we no longer see the Aertex shirts, pearl earrings and coral-coloured lipsticks of days gone by. The new post-quake Merivale is a chic, elegant area with an expanding high street that showcases both local and international brands, surrounded by beautiful properties, which are a credit to the vision of developers, architects and tasteful homeowners.

In this issue of Merivale we take a look at some of the new shopping destinations that have arrived on our doorstep. We also have a snapshot of the latest fashion trends for women, men and children, and explore the new interior craze of velvet, with ideas on how best to incorporate this into your home.

Enjoy the latest issue of Merivale,

N e w s Merivale has always been a popular location for shoppers. However, in post-quake Christchurch, this area is quickly becoming our top shopping destination, especially for high-end fashion and interiors. In the past month, four top retail brands have opened stores, all of which are in the new development at 203 Papanui Road. Moochi, Kate Sylvester, Wallace Cotton and Rodd & Gunn join the likes of Ruby, Taylor, Plume, and JNbY, all on the same stretch of street, with Working Style a stone’s throw away, too.

Speaking with Moochi creative director Kellie Taylor, she mentioned “When looking for a location to open the new store, Merivale was the biggest drawcard, especially with Quinns Fashion, who have such a high reputation nationally, as well as Merivale Mall being known as a prestigious shopping destination.”

With 45 retail stores in Merivale Mall and now a number in the surrounding area, as well as numerous restaurants and cafés, Merivale is fast becoming the “it” location in Christchurch.

K A T E S Y L v E S T E R The lastest arrival to the 203 Papanui Road locale is high fashion

store Kate Sylvester, and with it comes great expectations. “A great muse inspires, challenges and inspires” is the inspiration behind the

Autumn/Winter 2016 range, with Picasso’s portrayal of the muse giving this collection its underlining cubist eccentricity.

Adding to the fashion diversity of Merivale comes Rodd & Gunn, offering a wide range of men’s suiting to sit alongside all the favourites. Tailored

by Rodd & Gunn (203 Papanui Road) is a relativity new concept that has seen huge success in Australia and Auckland, and this Merivale store is the first of its kind in Christchurch. Rodd & Gunn sources the finest yarns, fabrics and leathers from around the world, as showcased in its new-season range

featuring beautifully designed suits made from a range of premium Italian fabrics.

C o P P E R & P I N KFor interior inspiration, Copper & Pink is a relativity new addition to

Merivale. The store is a collection of quirky and modern interiors and giftware. We love the new collection of Melody Rose Ceramics.

A c h i e v i n g A Y o u t h f u l g l o w Have you noticed the difference in the youthful glow of a healthy, young person’s skin compared that of an elderly person? Dr Brigid lee from Skin Rejuvenation Clinic gives us details on a new treatment that can achieve the results of yesteryear.

As we age we are exposed to many extrinsic factors, such as stress, pollution, the environment and our own lifestyle choices, plus we have our own intrinsic aging going on. These factors all affect our skin.

To achieve a more youthful glow, Dermapen™ has been recognised as being at the forefront of anti-aging in the skin rejuvenation field.

Dermapen™ treatments increase the skin’s elasticity, health and overall youthfulness by minimising the appearance of large pores, reducing acne scarring and causing skin rejuvenation to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

It does this by causing microscopic punctures in the skin – the skin is numbed prior to starting the Dermapen™ treatment! The resulting micro-channels in the skin stimulate the natural healing process of the body producing new collagen to repair the treated skin.

Straight after a treatment, while the micro-channels are still in the dermis, is the ideal time to infuse the skin with hyaluronic acid for added hydration and maximum anti-aging, skin rejuvenation effect.

To further enhance the anti-aging benefits of the Dermapen™ treatment, the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic adds in a red LED light treatment. The benefits of red LED light were initially discovered by NASA for healing wounds, by boosting circulation and stimulating collagen and elastin production.

If you want youthful, firm luminous skin the combination of a Dermapen™ treatment, hyaluronic acid infusion and red LED light is the answer! cAll the Skin RejuvenAtion clinic toDAY to SecuRe An Appointment.

V e l V e t i n t e r i o r sThrough the centuries and across different cultures velvet has been a symbol of wealth, power and royalty. It is no wonder, then, that it’s become a hot trends once more, taking Europe by storm throughout the autumn/winter seasons and soon to arrive at our doors. Velvet takes any piece of furniture to a higher level thanks to its luxurious look and feel. In terms of colour palette think rich deep blues, forest greens, burgundy and deep mustards. How to add VelVet to your interiors: 1. recover an old chair to give it olde worlde charm. 2. Add velvet cushions to your sofa to update the look and texture of a room. 3. recover your sofa in rich velvet-coloured fabric for an instant royal appeal. 4. Wallpaper a room in embossed velvet wallpaper to create an intimate cosy feel. 5. Add a velvet throw and cushions in the bedroom for a luxurious winter look.

How to wear:When wearing any graphic, it’s best to

keep your other clothing options natural. Try pulling colours from the graphic into your

other garments, such as your pants, belt or shoes, but remember to keep it simple!

F o r 2 0 1 6From animal graphics to opulent furs, and even blanket

accessories, Men’s London Fashion Week 2016 took fashion to the extreme. Here are two of our picks for the Autumn/Winter 2016

styles and how to re-create them as everyday wear.

As we leave summer behind, the fashion trends move with us. Canary turns into mustard, turquoise into navy and bright pinks

and corals transform into sultry burgundy (so popular e-commerce giants have had to add it as an individual colour choice within

their filters!). Capture the trends with our shopping guide.

A N I M A L I N s T I N C T ‘Animal’ was the print making big news on the runways, be it patterns of goldfish, through to snails. Alexander McQueen’s moth-like butterflies, each placed so precisely on every garment, created in-depth detail.

How to wear:shearling jackets are the easiest piece to style with an outfit. Try adding a plain

white T-shirt and some medium-washed

denim jeans.

Try adding a plain

white T-shirt and some medium-washed

denim jeans.

s H E A r L I N G J A C K E T s Always a favourite on the men’s winter runway. This year we see a new style on the collars, with designers making them bigger and bolder than last season. The warmth of these garments, with sheepskin interiors, makes them perfect for the chilliest season – a classic investment piece.

These Iberian neighbours have much in common including great art, architecture, cuisine and passion for life, yet it is their differences that make them such a wonderful place to holiday.

Travelling on land with guided holiday company Trafalgar for 19 days, before eight days on the dramatic and picturesque Douro River aboard Uniworld’s luxurious Queen Isabel, House of Travel has created a holiday that will appeal to even the most-seasoned traveller.

It all begins in contemporary Barcelona and includes the elegant cities of Madrid and Toledo and the celebrated province of Andalucia, where the cultures of North Africa and Europe once met and fused. In Seville, ‘do as the locals do’ as you while the time away with lunch, hosted by a local family who invite you to sample olive oil made on-site from their 6000 olive trees.

Meeting locals is a must on holiday. Discover and embrace local culture escorted by a passionate Travel Director as well as a number of local guides,

who take in a deeper, more unusual view of local culture seamlessly from land to water.

Portugal offers contrasts, from the beautiful waterfront of Lisbon, the relaxation of the world-famous Algarve to the medieval lanes of Porto, the embarkation point of an unforgettable river cruise.

Enjoyable, yet action-packed days make way for relaxation ambling down this waterway, famed for its wine production, offering the time to enjoy and reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime holiday.
