Senior Spotlight

Chelsea Shipman was born to Kris Ship-man on July 23, 1996, in Waco, Texas. She has one sister, Kasey Shipman. She has attended Merid-ian since First Grade. She participates in track events (Discus and Shot-put). She is also an editor for the Yearbook. Her career goal af-ter high school is to go to Tarleton State University to become a Pharmacist. Her favorite past times are hanging out with her friends, and being out-side.

Darren Arnold, Bailey Jay, Darcy Wyatt, and Ale Wil-liams (alternate) competed at Student Congress in Austin on January 12-14. Student Congress is an individual contest in a large group setting. It models the legislative process of democracy, specifically, the United States Congress. Within this mock legislative assembly competition, contestants draft legislation (proposed laws and position statements) submit-ted to the tournament, and they research the docket of bills and resolutions dealing with real-world social and political policies prior to the contest to prepare their speeches. At the tournament, students caucus in committees, deliver formal discourse on the merits and disadvantages of each piece of legislation, and vote to pass or defeat the measures they have examined. Parliamentary procedure forms structure for the discourse, and students extemporaneously respond to others’ arguments over the course of a session. This was the second year for the pilot Student Con-gress and the Meridian students advanced to state finals. Congratulations!
