Dr. Catherine Ferderbar, middle schoolscience teacher at St. Mary Parish School,Menomonee Falls, has been selected toreceive the 2014 Celebrate Teachers andTeaching Award from the Education Deansof Greater Milwaukee (EDGM). The 2014award focus is on teachers doing exempla-ry work in service learning. Ferderbar waschosen for her hands-on approach to teach-ing and was presented with the award at the

second annual Celebrate Teachers andTeaching event on Oct. 16th at AlvernoCollege.

The selection process for the award con-sidered teachers that received their profes-sional certifications at one of the EDGMinstitutions and had a written nomination.

Ferderbar, who is a MarquetteUniversity alumna and recently earned herdoctorate through Cardinal StritchUniversity was nominated by St. MaryParish School Principal, Linda Joyner. Thenomination detailed Ferderbars ability toaccommodate to each of her students learn-ing style and bring educational concepts tolife.

It is common place, for students to dis-sect, build, grow, write, sing, solve fictitiouscrimes, create visual representations, graph-

ic organizers, and even dress up like ele-ments to demonstrate their knowledge, saidJoyner. She empowers her students with theknowledge, skills and inspiration they needto take action and make a positive differ-ence in the community.

Ferderbars love of science and hands-on teaching style engages and inspires stu-dents in a way that helps them gain agreater sensitivity for the environment. Manyof her students noted environmentally friend-ly changes they have implemented at homedue to concepts taught by Ferderbar in classsuch as cleaning debris from storm sewers, forgoing soapy water when washing cars, and sweeping fertilizer off their driveways.

One sixth grade student was insFerderbar to rescue several tadpolepolluted sewer culvert and release toped frogs into a clean river.

She has organized a school-wcling program, a student managposting program, an after schooland garden club and developed a in collaboration with RiveredgeCenter which will be offered

schools as a service learning expThe program, entitled Protecting WEcosystems. teaches students absive plants and the role they play inlizing native ecosystems. Students leidentify, locate and properly remplants in prairie and forest areas. Athe project, students shared their knwith family members and neighboeffort to decrease the impact of species in their own communities.

The Menomonee Falls School Boardapproved a revised levy Oct. 27 which willinclude an additional downpayment of debt.

Voters approved the tax levy during theannual meeting in September. The finalbudget is later approved after the districtreceives information regarding enrollmentand the amount of state aid it will receive.

The total levy that was approved by theboard Oct. 27 was $38,652,607, a 1.06percent decrease from what was approvedat the annual meeting. The final, all fundsbudget approved by the board is$59,180,878.

At the start of his presentation, Directorof Business Services Jeff Gross said thatenrollment as of the third Friday inSeptember was 21 less than the district antic-ipated. However, there were 20 more stu-dents in the district summer school program.

According to Gross, the amount of equal-ized aid from the state was 12 percent high-er than the district anticipated. He said thatof the $8,215,505 increase in state aid, approximately $250,000 came fromincreases in summer school attendance.

Summer school, not only does it benefitkids immensely, it also give us a financialboost, Gross said.

The district also received a $650,000increase in state aid by keeping expendituresunder budget, according to information fromthe district.

Gross also said that the district anticipat-ed that the total equalized value in the vil-lage would decrease 1 percent. Instead, itincreased 5.99 percent.

That will impact tax rate, which is now$11.53 per $1,000 equalized valuation, lower than the 12.35 per $1,000 valuationthat was estimated at the annual meeting.Under the final tax rate, a resident owning ahome that has an equalized value of$250,000 will pay $2,882.70 in the schooldistrict portion of the property tax, a$205.49 decrease from last year.

With the increase in equalized value,

Gross said the district will see a decrease instate aid next year, as equalized valueincreased by 2.3 percent while the districtenrollment will also decrease.

Its going to hurt us in the aid formula,Gross said.

With the changes in additional state aidthis year, Gross said the district had theoption that with the state aid increase, thedistrict would levy additional dollars to payoff principal on debt while still having alower levy than last year. Gross said the dis-trict could save $115,000 over 10 years bypaying off the debt.

Board member Scott Ternes supportedthe option to take advantage of increasedstate aid to pay off additional referendumdebt this year.

    Board President Faith VanderHorst noted

that under the revised budget and levy, thedistrict will pay off debt and save on interestcosts and there also be lower property taxesthis year.

So everybody wins, VanderHorst said. When asked, Gross said the district

would pay off debt issued in 2007 as part ofrenovations at the high school.

Gross also added there were severalother highlights in this years budget, includ-

ing expansion of summer school offeringsand interventions to improve student learn-ing, capital maintenance projects with anemphasis on the Ben Franklin ElementarySchool building, expansion of student

devices such as laptops and I-Pads imentary and middle school levels ing a general fund balance of 19.2of operating expenditures.

By Sam EricksonVeterans Day has taken on a new meaning

for many Americans since September 11 andthe beginning of the conflicts in Iraq andAfghanistan. Only a few years ago, manyAmericans did not know an individual who hadbeen in active combat duty in the last 20 years. After the Vietnam War, the military becamemuch less valued and much less popular in the

mainstream culture, but, today, all veterans arehonored for their service on Veterans Day.The first Armistice Day celebration took

place in 1919 and marked the first anniversaryof the Armistice. Thirty states made it a legal hol-iday and President Woodrow Wilson led the fes-tivities. Armistice Day was made a federal holi-day in 1938, making it one of the most recentholidays in America. The name was officiallychanged to Veterans Day with legislation pro-posed in 1953.

Unlike religious and secular holidays likeChristmas and Thanksgiving, there are very fewofficial celebrations of Veterans Day in America, although this too is rapidly changing as moreveterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan. If youare interested in establishing your own tradi-tions, there are many things you can do. Mostcities will have some memorial for soldiers lost in

war, and laying flowers or remembering soldiersthat you have known is a good option. Whilethere are active service men and women in thefield, you might consider sending a care pack-age or just a thank-you card to a soldier. Youcan even discuss the history of the holiday and

    American military involvement with yodren.

Most holidays in the United Statebeen moved to Mondays to create weekend. The same was done for VDay, but veterans groups protested andmoved back to the traditional dNovember 11. Most groups thought iraise the profile of the holiday, but it has

had the opposite effect. While more peoobserving the holiday in recent years, mnesses do not close for the day. Only ment offices and banks are closed. Offiemonies center on the Tomb of the UnknArlington National Cemetery in WasD.C. A color guard from all branches ofitary patrols the site through the night, dential wreath is laid and Taps is playthe grave.

Veterans Day is both a state and a holiday in all states. It coincides with tional celebrations of Armistice DaRemembrance Day in other parts of theThe holiday is observed on Novembecause major hostilities in World Warended formally at 11 a.m. on the 11thNovember, the 11th month, in 1918Germany signed the Armistice at the V

We think we cantake care (of business).

    Pocius expected her Mukwonago
