The School District of Menomonee Falls is testing studentsat every grade level with new assessments required by thestate of Wisconsin, Director of Curriculum and Learning GaryKiltz told the School Board Oct. 27.
Kiltz and Director of Technology and Assessment JeffNennig summarized testing during a presentation to theboard.
Never before in US history of education have statesrequired the extensive series of testing that will occur in the2014-15 school year, Kiltz and Nennig stated in a memo tothe board. At some point during the year, every student in
grades (kindergarten) through 12th grade will participate in amandated assessment required by the state.Kiltz told the board that a state-mandated assessment will
be given by the district during every month of the year.At the elementary level, the Phonological Awareness
Literacy Screening (PALS) will be given from kindergarten tosecond grade. Kiltz said the district previously provided thetest from 4-year-old kindergarten to first grade, and now sec-ond grade was added this year. The PALS is given in the falland the spring.
Also at the elementary level, the Wisconsin Knowledgeand Concepts Exam (WKCE) is administered in fourth, eighthand 10 grade for science and social studies.
The Smarter Balanced Assessment is administered in thelast nine weeks of the school year in math, reading and lan-guage arts to measure progress from the past school year. It isgiven to students in third through eighth grades. While the ACTAspire isnt required by the state at the middle school level,Kiltz said the district will use it as a progress monitoring assess-

I am prey driven, so I must not go to a home withany small animals. Please no condo or apartment for me - I mightbe a little guy - but I love to make some noise! I am friendly andknow how to speak. WKCE, there will now be three ACT teststhat will be required: The ACT Aspire forninth grade students in fall and spring and10th grade students in spring; the ACT PlusWriting for 11th grade students whichincludes the ACT test and a 30 minute essay
test; and the ACT Work Keys, which is anapplied skills assessment for 11th grade stu-dents related to workplace situations.
To adjust to the ACT tests at the highschool, Kiltz said the district began aligningthe curriculum with work and readiness stan-dards.
Our curriculum has been pretty muchaligned with the college career readinessfor the last couple of years, Kiltz said.
He said the district has been buildingskills bands for the ACT from sevenththrough 11th grades to get all students scor-ing in the 20-27 range and getting acceler-ated or honors students scoring in the 28-32range (the ACT is scored on a 1-36 scale).
While the ACT was optional in the past,it will now be required. Kiltz said that 60-70percent of district high school students took
the ACT in the past. He said a slight dip isexpected now that all students will be takingthe test.
In addition, the ACCESS test will be pro-vided for English Language Learners, theWisconsin Alternative Assessment will beprovided for students with disabilities, andthe Dynamic Learning Maps for studentswith significant cognitive disabilities.
In addition to that testing, Kiltz said thatMenomonee Falls has been selected to par-ticipate in the National Assessment ofEducation Progress (NAEP) at fourth gradeat Valley View Elementary School and 12thgrade at the high school. Nothing rattled Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. inhis first game of the 2014 postseason. TheGermantown senior quarterback rebound-ed from an interception on the Warhawksfirst possession, completing 16-of-24 passesfor 291 yards and three touchdowns andcarrying his team to a 37-18 win at homeover Brookfield Central, Oct. 24, in the firstround of the Division 2 playoffs.
The Lancers (5-5) took advantage of themiscue by Germantown (9-1) and scoredfirst on a 22-yard field goal by senior BucNellen for a 3-0 lead with 7 minutes 42 sec-onds left in the first quarter.
The Warhawks got a big break from
their special teams unit when Central juniorquarterback and punt returner DominicLabellarte dropped the ball, which wasrecovered by Germantown junior AaronPokorny. The Warhawks scored four playslater on a 15-yard run by senior runningback Joe Lemerond with 4:08 left in thequarter and led 7-3. Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte
Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone leftunder my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging painwhen I bite down and my dentures pop out when I
open my mouth even with denture adhesive. What aremy options and how much does this cost?Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems with
your dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth areremoved you can lose 40% of the remaining bone thefirst year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continueevery year until implants are placed to stop bone loss. This means you can lose height of bone and width ofbone continuously. When you wear dentures thedentures may appear tight but over time as the boneresorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is whydentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 yearsto try and maintain a better fit between the dentureacrylic and the bone.
Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during anormal chewing cycle. That movement coupled withbone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves thatcan cause pain from denture pressure.
Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing yourdentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This isdone by placing implants or mini-implants into the
jaws to support your dentures. How many implants
you receive is often dependant upon your budget. Ihave written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistrywhich is a concept that allows patients to placeimplants before bone loss occurs. They can thencontinue to add implants over time as their budgetsallow until they have enough support to have apermanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants assoon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bonegrafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-On-Dentures with a few implants so that the implants canhave attachments that the denture clips to. Thisprevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the needfor denture adhesive which can be quite annoying toclean out each day. If enough implants can be affordedthen a bar can be made to snap the denture on to andthis allows the implants to be splinted and increasestheir strength.
If we have 6 implants in the upper arch (or more)and at least 5 implants in the lower arch then a hybrid
or "fixed" denture can be made for our patieIf you have lost too much bone accordin
dentist, there may be grafting procedures undergo to add bone for supporting implacan involve using bone from your chin (chgrafts), bone from your ramus (the area wisdom teeth), or using hip grafts to re-bone. Alternatively, ridge spreading reduction can be undertaken to try and

CORRESPONDENT
Town of Merton The season came to
end for the Menomonee Falls girls volleyballteam at the regional final, as they wereswept 3-0 in the regional final at Arrowhead,Oct. 25.
BYTHOMASJ. MCKILLEN
MANAGINGEDITOR
The Menomonee Falls boys soccer teamqualified for the state tournament Oct. 25 witha sectional final win over Hamilton that wasdecided in a shootout.
Making history is always sweet andespecially at this point. We werent expectedto even come close to this, it just makes it
sweet to prove everybody wrong,Menomonee Falls midfielder Alex Eastmansaid afterward. This is an amazing feeling, unlike anything else.
This is what weve worked for all year,Menomonee Falls defender Joe Burgoyneadded. The season is just a buildup to thismoment.
The teams ended regulation in a scorelesstie. Kay Olapo put Menomonee Falls on theboard in the first overtime by heading a crossfrom Sam Thomann at the 100th minute.
But Hamilton scored the equalizer at the116th minute as Ben Krolczyk finished off ascramble from a corner kick.
It took all the momentum with that goal,Burgoyne said of Hamiltons equalizer.
With the score tied 1-1 at the end of over-time, a shootout settled the matter, with each
team getting five opportunities. Both teamsmissed their first chances, but MenomoneeFalls converted their next four, with the fourthshootout goal coming from Brandon Dantone.Menomonee Falls goalkeeper Will Genthethen stopped Hamiltons final attempt tosecure the win.
Menomonee Falls advanced to a DivisionI state semifinal against Beloit Memorial at 7p.m. Oct. 31. The state tournament will beheld at the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Afterward, Menomonee Falls Coach ScottStein said while Menomonee Falls playedgood teams in the postseason, they werentplaying teams they always came across inpast playoffs. He noted that Menomonee Fallswasnt ranked at the start of the year andMenomonee Falls was beat by a ton ofteams in a summer league.
I think it worked to our advantage men-tally, Stein said, noting that Menomonee Falls
didnt play any Brookfield squad in the post-season. However, the teams they did playwere very good, as Stein noted thatSheboygan North was undefeated at the timeMenomonee Falls played them in the sectionalsemifinal. Also, regional opponent Neenahhad only a few early season losses.
It was a testament to our guys, they justseemed to battle, Stein said.
He noted that three of Menomonee Falls
lossses came to Marquette, Brookfield Eastand Cedarburg, who all qualified for the statetournament.
I think it grew game by game, Stein saidof the season. We came out with confidence.
Stein said his team is a loose and prac-tices arent as intense in the past.
Theyre gamers. I think each game theyshowed up, Stein said.
Stein added that he was proud to seealumni at the game.
Eastman also recalled the history of t he pro-gram, as there were several former players inattendance at the game. Burgoyne also thankedStein and other coaches for their support.
Its amazing how much they can believein us. They got us this far just by believing inus, Burgoyne said.
Hamilton Coach Steve Provan noted that
Menomonee Falls and Hamilton is a majorrivalry for the schools. It was a tough match and my guys played
really well, left it all on the field. I think the sec-ond half we controlled a lot of the game, wejust werent able to get the goal, Provan said.
When asked to look back at the season,Provan noted this is his third year coachingHamilton.
Each year weve taken a step forwardand our goal first and foremost this year was towin the regional championship, Provan said.We went a step further and then to be able tobeat Arrowhead in the sectional semifinal. What this team accomplished here and whatthese guys accomplished is something that has-nt been accomplished at Hamilton HighSchool in a long time.
Provan added that making it to the section-al final is another steppingstone for the pro-gram.

Weve been struggling up and down allyear, Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said. I expect-ed us to get one (game) and see what hap-pened. But we battled, and we couldnt askfor more than that, other than a win, I guess.
In a seesaw battle in the first game, therewere 13 lead changes and 10 ties. The leadwas no more than three points byArrowhead. The Indians rallied f rom a 20-17deficit to tie the game at 20-20 after a kill bysenior Lyndsey Bassler. A kill by junior RachelFrankowski forced the last tie at 25-25.Arrowhead got two straight kills to win 27-25.
Arrowhead kept the pressure on in thesecond game with kills that padded theirlead to as much as eight at 19-11. Falls cutthe lead down to three, but it was too big ofa hole to bounce back from and lost 25-18.
We just cant get a ball down, Brunssaid. A team like (Arrowhead) who are ableto get a ball down more eff iciently wears youdown. That was really the game.
Falls put up a fight in the thirleading by two points at 10-8 Warhawks answered with a 7-2 ru17-12 and never looked back on tto a 25-19 win.
It was a sad ending for the fiveon the team but the cupboard isnt least nine players will return and coach will dip into the talent pool junior varsity squad.
Britt (Robinson) was our cayear, Bruns said. I think that shethe top liberos in the state. She wawhere. That will hurt. Gel (ALabermeier), Justine (Ertl), Lynd(Mac)kenzie (Maier), they all hadplay on this team this year. We got iors and some young sophomores be back. Rachel can slide over alibero next year so we will be OK.
Falls finished their season at 22all and 6-4 in the GreaterConference.
