As a parent who has volunteered for activities in the School District ofMenomonee Falls, Dee Dee Ternes became aware of students for whomthe school lunch may have been the only meal they would have that day.
It was a concern for those children that led to Ternes and Lisa Jacksonstarting a local Blessings in a Backpack program.
Blessings in a Backpack is a national non-profit organization that wasstarted in 2005 and is based in Louisville, Ky. The organization seeks toprovide food for the weekend for children who are on the free andreduced lunch program in the elementary schools. Nationwide over61,000 are served in over 40 states through the Blessings in a Backpackprogram.
Ternes and Jackson started working on creating a local chapter lastMay.
I have volunteered in our schools for the last 13 years and when Iwas part of the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) at Ben Franklin, I wasmade aware that we had kids in our schools who were going hungry,Ternes stated.
According to information from Ternes, 19.1 percent of dis trict studentsqualify for the free and reduced lunch program, a figure that increases to23.5 percent of elementary school age children.
The local chapter receives the backpacks from the national Blessingsin a Backpack organization, and there are currently 50 children involvedin the program.
I see this program only growing over the next several months, Ternessaid, adding that there are more than 400 kids who are eligible for theprogram. As word continues to get out about Blessings, I think more fam-ilies will come forward and want to take part in the program. If a familyhas an elementary student who is on the free and reduced lunch programand they want to participate in Blessings in a Backpack, they just need to

The Menomonee Falls boys basketballteam erased an early deficit againstSheboygan North Nov. 29 with a 12 point runin the second quarter on the way to a 73-62victory.
The Indians got off to a slow start as Northheld a 10-2 lead after Davis Larson converteda free throw. A three point basket by EliBelmore gave North a 17-9 lead with 30 sec-onds left in the first quarter.
Menomonee Falls responded by scoringthe first five points of the second quarter. Alayup by Menomonee Falls Bryce McMurtrytied the score at 22-22 a the 4:10 mark.Following a free throw by Larson, anotherlayup by McMurtry started the 12-point run
that gave Menomonee Falls a 36-23 lead athalftime.
I think we woke up and thats the trait ofan inexperienced team, new MenomoneeFalls Coach Andy Farley said afterward. Themore we play, the more we will get comfort-able with each other.
Menomonee Falls continued to build onthe lead in the third quarter, as a layup byRudy Powells gave the Indians a 50-32 leadat the 4:08 mark of the third quarter. Northcut into the lead, as a three-point basket byMatt Gerber made the score 70-62 with 1:09remaining. Menomonee Falls responded byconverting three free throws while North washeld scoreless the rest of the way.
Dontrelle Handy led Menomonee Fallswith 16 points while Jerry Murphy added 15points.
Farley said he preached transition offenseand his team started running and got key stopto start the run.
Thirteen players got on the court againstNorth while 12 played in the season openerat Plymouth three days earlier. Farley said thatpointed to the depth within the team.
Everyone on this team can offer some-thing, Farley said.
Menomonee Falls followed that win with a43-41 victory over Waukesha CatholicMemorial Dec. 3. Ty Weber led MenomoneeFalls with 10 points.
Hamilton splits weekend gamesHamilton played three games over five
days and won two of them. Following a 55-32win over Lake Mills Nov. 26, Hamilton lost toMilwaukee King 53-50 at the West CoastClassic held at Wisconsin Lutheran CollegeNov. 29. Brady Ellingson led Hamilton with
21 points. The next day Hamilton traveled to FortAtkinson for the Fort Healthcare Classic andbeat Marshfield 43-34. Ellingson led Hamiltonwith 17 points.
The Hamilton girls basketball team strug-gled at the Hank Raymonds Holiday Classic atPius XI Nov. 29-30, as the Chargers played
without a key player for most of the two games.Starting guard Hannah Menzia bangedher head on the floor while scrambling for aloose ball toward the end of the first quarteragainst Pius Nov. 29. She was held out for theremainder of that game and the Nov. 30 gameagainst Whitefish Bay.
Hamilton was trailing Pius 16-9 at the timeMenzia left the game. The Chargers ralliedearly in the second quarter as two three pointbaskets by Molly Diehl and a layup by TaylorKlug tied the score at 20-20 with 5:26 remain-ing the in the second quarter. But Pius respond-ed by scoring the next eight points to take a 28-20 lead with 26.2 seconds left before halftime.
Pius led by as much at 15 points andHamilton could not get any closer than 10points in the second half. Klug led Hamiltonwith 16 points
Losing Hannah already does not help thecause, so that made it a lot tougher, HamiltonCoach Bill Scasny said afterward.
Scasny added that the teams are in differ-ent places, as Hamilton has several new playersin addition to Scasny being the new coach forthe Chargers this season.
We knew it was going to be a hard oneright from the start, and it showed, Scasnysaid. At times we played real well and other
times we didnt. The biggest thing is the kidsplayed hard and Im happy they played hardthe whole game.
The next day the Chargers lost to WhifefishBay in the consolation game, 47-38. Diehl andKlug both scored nine points each for theChargers.

Germantown and Milwaukee are losing atrue artist and craftsman after 34 years ofdesigning original one of a kind jewelry, Master
Jeweler and Goldsmith Curtis Franklin is retiringand closing his Store, An Eye For DesignJewelry, due to health issues.
Curtiss lifelong love of the jewelry and thejewelry business started early in high school. Inhigh school he found he had a passion for thearts and especially the metal arts. He soon foundhimself working at the local jewelry store doingsketches of jewelry designs that customers hadbeen looking to have made. He began workingalongside a European trained goldsmith. That is
where he honed his skills in wax carving, casting, soldering and setting techniques used to
fabricate unique pieces of jewelry. After a few years he left to start his own
store and has continued over the years
challenging himself with new innovative designsalong with learning to facet gemstones, whichhas led to Award winning designs that are ondisplay in the store. One customer said thatsome of them look like they have stones insideof stone and were amazed at how unusual andbeautiful these were.
Curtis says he enjoyed his thirty four yearsserving his many customers and the communityand will really miss them but the last few years
have been difficult due to health issues and Ican no longer work in the store on a regularbasis. So it is with sadness, we made the choice
to close the doors. Julie and I have enjoyedmaking life-long friends and consider many ofthem part of our extended family. For thatreason, we have decided to have a short Goingout Of Business Sale to say farewell and showour appreciation. I would rather give my friendsand customers these great prices instead ofselling it to a jewelry wholesaler and we hopeto see everyone in the next few weeks and wishall a Happy Holiday and Merry Christmas!
Longtime local jeweler closing store after 34 years

Benedons, Inc in Menomonee Falls is a full-service pawnbrokerBenedon's Inc is a licensed pawnbroker located on Appleton
Avenue in Menomonee Falls.
What is a pawn?Pawn is the process of using collateral to obtain a loan. When
you sell your items to someone, that is NOT considered a pawn,
it is a simple sale. Many businesses who buy things advertise under PAWN in
the Yellow Pages or online, but they ONLY purchase, they doNOT lend. These companies are not pawnbrokers. They merelybait you into coming in with your belongings and try to buy them.
We get calls on a regular basis asking "Are you a REAL pawnshop that does loans? We are such a business. Businesses canONLY aLEND money with special licensing.
In Wisconsin, the maximum a local pawnbroker with munici-pality licensing can give is limited to $150 by statute. Furtherlicensing is required for a pawnbroker to give larger loans. Wedo hold such a license.
A pawn loan is for a period of 30 days (a legal month) and
are calculated that way, per diem. Interest is required on amonthly basis and the loan can be renewed for up to one year, maximum again, by statute.
Chuck Benedon has been a gold and diamond dealer forover 35 years. Hong Kong, Naples andRome, Italy and Columbia are some of the other places whereChuck has manufactured or imported products from over theyears.
We are a family operation and we LEND MORE and
CHARGE LESS than any other pawn shop in Milwaukee. Ifyou're looking for a short term loan, give us a call at (262) 293-3990.
Benedon's opened at Colonial Plaza four years ago and isnow located at the old home of Maxwell Photography, which
they bought last year. They've quadrupled the size of their oper-ation to accommodate the large amount of collectibles and othervaluables they've been purchasing from around the area. Fromodds and ends collectibles to high end watches, Benedon's isfull of antiques, watches and refurbished jewelry priced lowerthan manufacturing cost.
"You'll find serious bargains with real value," owner ChuckBenedon said.
It's a family affairA career diamond importer and jewelry wholesaler for over
35 years, Chuck opened up his pawn shop/buying office whenhe "got tired of traveling."
"It was fun in the beginning and a great learning experience,"Benedon said. "But after more than 100 trips abroad and evenmore domestically, it got old. I decided to slow that down andstay closer to my family."
Sam Benedon, a music student at Milwaukee Area TechnicalCollege, manages the music department at Benedon's, which is
filled with guitars and amps. Sam gives lessons on Saturdays andhas built a number of electric and acoustic guitars and does setinstrument setup. In need of a good guitar or amp for the holi-days? Stop in and see Sam.
ServicesBenedon's Inc. is a licensed, bonded and insured operation
providing short term loans up to $10,000. Benedon's lends morethan other similar shops and charges less. When buying your oldjewelry, Benedon's also claims to pay more than any other likebusiness in the entire Milwaukee area.
"Shop around and compare," Chuck tells his potential clients."It will be worth your time. It's not uncommon to find we pay
double what others do, particularly for diamonds." Sam, Bruceand Chuck are all musicians, as is Sam's sister, Tessa. Tessa is apercussionist at UW-Whitewater and is a guitarist/singer as well.
Benedon's offers precious metals brokerage and buys jewel-ry, watches, diamonds, precious metals and scrap. Price look up:

With 30 years in optical industry, MenomoneeFalls residents Don and Deb Galle relish everymoment they spend servicing their cherished com-munity, and their Kindy Optical store is just as mucha gathering of friends as it is a business.
"We're always in touch with our customers andwe enjoy that," said Deb. "Not a day goes by thatwe don't have a hand in things. Customers comedirectly to us, not a corporation, with questions andissues."
Voted in July as the Sterling franchises"Emerging Vision Store of the Year," the storewhichrecently moved to a bigger location at N82W15340 Appleton Ave.brings to the communitythe unique aspect of having opticians rather than an
optometrist run the store, which gives everything a"whole different flow," said Deb."We put a lot of time and energy into making
sure our customers get the perfect frames," saidDeb, who creates the many selections using state-of-the-art equipment. "On any given day, we havemore than 3,000 frames available. We offer agood mixfrom high-quality, 14-karat gold overlayframes with crystals to family-friendly options. Wehave something for everyone.
The businesswhich also provides contact lens-
es, polarized sunglasses and accessorieshas anon-site optometrist who handles the eye exams. TheGalles then work as a team to bring the productfrom start to finish, having the glasses ready thesame day they are purchased.
Don makes the glasses and does all the edgingand I choose the styles on the floor, said Deb. It issuch an easy and efficient way to do things.
The owners take great pride in specializing inservicing hard-to-fit customers who have trouble find-
ing their ideal pair of glasses or getting their specif-ic needs met.
You hear so many optical nightmares out thereand a lot of those more difficult situations are sent tous, said Deb. "For example, this morning we had atwo-year-old referred to us by Children'sHospitalwhich is a huge compliment, because theytrust usimmediately followed by a 100-year-oldwoman in a wheelchair. Its such a blessing to workwith these individuals.
When customers enter the store, they know rightaway they will have a positive experience, Debsaid.
We have a great staff and there is a lot ofhumor involved, and customers can feel that energyright away," she said. "We run a tight ship andeveryone knows what they're doing, but we're alsorelaxed and we have fun.
The couplewho moved from Stevens Point to thevillage 23 years ago to open their storealso enjoygiving back to the community they are proud to call
home. Although both of their children have gradu-ated from Menomonee Falls High School, theGalles continue to sponsor various sporting pro-grams such as Little League, wrestling and manymore.
We sup-port manyyouth and highschool sports, said Deb.
Descr ibingtheir new loca-tion as gor-geous andmuch biggerthan our previ-ous store, Debsaid she andher husbandare thrilled to
be able to pro-vide an attrac-tive and com-fortable loca-tion for theirloyal customers.
We justlove our community; we love Menomonee Falls, she said. The people are so honest and friendlyand easy to work with. That makes all the differ-ence.

A lot has changed in the 20 years since Rayand Kim Nelson opened their first Culver'sFrozen Custard in Menomonee Falls.
"Everything is dramatically different," Kimsaid. "When we opened our store (located atW186 N9581 Bancroft Drive, Highway Q) onDec. 9, 1993, there was almost nothing on thatside of town. That area has undergone atremendous transformation."
In the last two decades, the beloved restau-ranthome of the signature ButterBurgerhasbecome a community favorite.
"We have people who came here 20 yearsago who still come here today," Kim shared.
"Some of the kids who worked here for us asteenagers now bring their own kids here to eat.
It's so cool to see them and talk to them."It's this spirit of camaraderie that keeps alive
the popularity of an eatery that first opened inSauk City, Wis. in 1984 and has since expand-ed to 489 stores nationwide. After opening theMenomonee Falls location, the Nelsons alsoobtained stores in West Bend, Sussex, Hartfordand Port Washington.
With both Ray and Kim having back-grounds in the restaurant business, this was theperfect fit for them, Kim said.
"We had the entrepreneurial spirit and someconnections in the Culver's company, as well assome very positive experiences as guests at the
restaurant, she explained. We also had con-versations with owners at the original Culver's,
so we pursued this avenue for ourselves. Wevejust always really enjoyed the business and thepeople."
Tradition continues as two of the couple'sthree children are also part of the Culver'steam.
"Our oldest son was eight weeks old whenwe opened our first restaurant," Kim said. "Ourkids have literally grown up in the business."
While the famous ButterBurger alwaysmade fresh from 100 percent Midwest-raisedbeef is a major draw, the menu also features awide variety of sandwich, salad and other foodselections.
But its the custardproduced in Wisconsinand made fresh all daythat brings in thecrowds, noted Kim.
"It's very interesting," she said. "Even thoughwe have a lot of guests during lunch and din-ner, the 7 p.m. to close custard rush can beeven busier. People just love it.
And two decades later, the guests keepcoming.
"We would like to thank the community for
supporting us all these years," said Kim. Thiswhole journey has been wonderful.
Culver's is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. most ofthe year, but closes at 10 p.m. Sunday throughThursday during the winter. To reach the busi-ness or for more information, call (262) 255-7718 or visit www.culvers.com.

was original-ly located onthe four cor-ners (next tothe Kentucky
