ABOUT PKDPolycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a chronic, genetic disease that causes uncontrolled growth of fl uid-fi lled cysts in the kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. It a� ects all gender, racial and ethnic groups equally.
A typical kidney is the size of a human fi st and weighs about a third of a pound. Polycystic kidneys can be much larger, growing as large as a football.
There are two types of PKD and both are genetic: autosomal dominant (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive (ARPKD).
There is no cure, but the PKD Foundation is dedicated to fi nding treatments and a cure for PKD.
