Also, take into consideration how many vocabulary words topour in. Friends with big vocabularies tend to ramble on. Motor-mouths don’t get another invite. Don’t put too few words, either.Quiet friends seem stuck-up. No one likes that. Add some fun, flirtywords! Throw in compliments and a shot of tequila for gayish laughter.Your friend will be a treat to chat with. But remember to keep up.Don’t let the gingerbread man leave you in his shadow.

So, you get the point. After adding ingredients, let chill for onehour. Wasn’t that easy? A no-bake friend for the socially challenged!But was it really easier than making a real friend? Do you really want togo to a party with someone you know is made of crunchy caramelgoodness?

On the other hand, you could just stay home.

Your cell phone rings. You have a text message from Coworker Carol,“Are you coming to my party?” and “Bring a friend, there’s plenty ofroom!” and “We can all get to know each other” and “Janitor Jeb isbringing three people.”

Everyone needs a friend, even if only for an hour or two on aFriday night. Making friends can be hard for those of us surrounded byendless acquaintances. Which one do you choose to go on to the nextlevel? Can’t decide? Well, here’s a way to make a new friend.

In superficial high school years, you don’t have to invest in anintricate recipe. After all, you’ll only be shunning them at the lunchtable in a few weeks. Perishable items are suggested in this case.

For adult relationships, don’t use anything that can go badquickly. Eggs, milk, cheese, and bread are all no-no’s. You don’t wantyour friend going sour on you halfway through. Nothing is moreinsulting than being shunned by a no-bake friend.

For acquaintances, use the sugar-free recipe, or else they canbecome rather annoying.

When making your no-bake friend, take special care in youringredients. If you want a rich friend, add quarters, for a poor friend,pennies. But think first, do you want your friend saying, “Sure, I cangive you a ride in my BMW, seeing as your Volvo is in the shop,” or“Can I borrow your car? The repo man found me!” Various samplesshould be tested first.

Thoughts:on memories andexperiences

It’s been four years—but who’s counting anyway? Yet, whether they’vebeen short or long, fun or boring, educational or simply nothing, is all upto you. I can only speak for myself. And what I remember are fourshort, meaningful, fun, creative years all wrapped snugly together, like abox full of pictures, tied shut and topped off with a frilly bow. When Ithink back, it seems like they were all too brief, and there’s so muchthat I didn’t—or couldn’t—do. Hindsight is 20/20, of course. Butthen again, there are a lot of things I did do—and had fun doing: Fromnewspaper to Creative Writing to class office, I’ve been through thewhole loop.

In the midst of everything, there are some of my memories thatI’d like to share. They’re both good and bad, meaningful and silly—Ihope perhaps you can relate to at least one of them, since it’s supposedthat everyone’s thoughts parallel as we all share the peculiarities andhardships of the human experience. Enjoy—

Four years ago, I never thought I’d be writing about Ms. Flick.Of course, four years ago, when I met her, I knew I’d never forget aboutthat twenty-something blonde who taught Unified Geometry. Youcould guess, I’m sure, these are the less-than-pretty memories, the onesI’d rather forget rather than the ones that’ll actually be forgotten. Itwasn’t her fault, and perhaps it was only by nature that she’d been thehardest, most demanding teacher I’ve ever had. Well, kudos, Kelly. Ithink I learned perseverance in your class more than about any kind ofshape or angle. Adversity is the perfect primer.

Speaking of math, I think of my tenth grade year, about whichI’m compelled to ask, “Who could forget Ms. Nau?” If the need arose,

she’d pull out a power tool and drill the math into your head. Youcould’ve screamed until your vocal chords popped, and even thatwouldn’t have stopped her. And that’s the way it should’ve been, too,since her class was easy enough. This makes me recall the time I wrotea biographical sketch of Ms. Nau for In-General. Behind the Nautiness(yeah, that’s what it was called) shed light on the life of one of Lee’smost interesting teachers. I learned a lot from her, about life and math;they’re both important. Thanks, Ms. Nau.

And after the fog of numbers and squiggles, I pull the curtainback in my head and think about the science department. As a junior, Ihad Ms. Remus for the second time, and although AP Chemistry wasn’texactly my cup of tea, the Remazoid was one of the coolest teachersI’ve ever had. Both times. She’s been a dancer, a beauty queen, anaerobics instructor, and a mom. And when she said things like“groovy” or “funky” in class, it never failed to endear her to me themore. Ms. Remus is great, and I’ll remember her charisma andenthusiasm for as long as I live—even if she did make me work in thelab.

These are the memories that are fresh in my mind. These arethe things that I know. It’s twelfth grade, where I’ve been fortunateenough to have my two favorite teachers in the same year: Ms.Alderman and Ms. Maddox; I’m sure you all know and have known.They came packaged together, like two sardines wrapped in cellophane.Or like two eyes, side by side, watching me. And as always, two ofanything is better than one. But the point is, I love them both. Not justfor Ms. Alderman’s Rhode Island accent or her hippy catch phrases.Nor for Ms. Maddox’s girlish looks or her captivating stories. Rather,they’ve taught me so much, guided me in so many ways. They’re thekind of teachers you wish you could have every day of every year butseldom find. Both of you guys are great.

That’s all I have to say. I leave these memories to you, and, witha little creativity and a little thought, hopefully, you’ll be able to conjureup some of your own.

I suppose I’m supposed to conjure up quaint, sigh-inspiring memories of thepast four years. Like how Ms. Hines would make sure that everybody knewthat all gum goes in the wastebasket and how we were forbidden to wave toher in the hall and how we had to have the pink paper to put our notes on.Or what about Ms. Chalk? Lord, that’s a story. Just remember that you arenot a chicken, pecking on the barnyard floor—you are an eagle, soaring highthrough the sky. And if you work hard, and really put in your dues, thensomeday, someday, you too will get to walk across that stage and say, “I am asenior, and I am graduated.”

Well, someday is this day, and we are graduated.Hey, hey, hey, stop looking over your shoulder already. Don’t you

know life’s ahead of you, not behind? And if these four short years werethe climax of your life, then honestly, you have my sympathy.

Instead, I’d like to think of all the memories I’m going to have. Likethe tingle in the crowd as the lights go down on Sara Hereford’s firstBroadway performance. Like reading over Professor Brennan Gamwell’smonthly magazine: All Things Grammar and the Proper Placement of Punctuation.Like the smell of Virginia Lamb’s weekend kayaking and camping troupe asthey trail into town to feast on cookies (my supply).

Ah, all the memories I’m going to have. I can see some of themnow, clear and crisp like a sunshine daydream. Others more grey, fuzzy anddistant, somewhere beyond the genteel curve of time, waiting patiently tobe developed and discovered.

So pull your shoulders back and step forward. Time is laid out likea well-stocked buffet. Just find the life you love, and enjoy.

Seniors,

Remember when you took the graduation exams, back in tenthgrade? You passed them all. And, that’s when you realized that you hadthree years of waiting and boredom ahead of you. But, the waiting isfinally over, and now your senior year is almost complete. Don’t startto panic now. Don’t be sad and mournful because you will be leavinghome to go and make new friends in an exciting college town. If youget down and out, thinking about all your new responsibilities, justremember me, the junior, the one who still has another year of“nonsense” to go before I am free to enter the real world.

Now that you are almost a high school graduate, and most ofyou are 18, adults, more opportunities will be opened to you. Thingsthat you never even thought of are now possible. Take everyopportunity you see and seize it by the balls. If you won’t do this foryourself, do it for me. Take your chances, so that we (theunderclassmen) will not lose hope of having a future ourselves,completely.

Remember Mrs. Reiger, Mrs. Daniels, Mr. Tyson, well, don’tworry, you won’t be seeing them anymore. Oh, but I will. And,remember getting in-house for skipping, all because you didn’t wantbarf-burgers for lunch again. Well, have no fear; you will probably get atleast an hour for lunch starting now through the rest of your life.

Just remember, things are really looking up for you, even if youare sad about leaving. At least there is some kind of change in store foryou. As for me, another year of the same.
