The monthly newsletter of the Newcomers’ Club of Salt Lake City, Inc.
I stepped up and ran for president because
of what Alan Fletcher wrote in last year's June
edition of the Oasis and also said at the March
General Board meeting. It was important and
true then, and it is just as important and true
now, so I'm going to say exactly what he said.
As a matter of fact, I'm plagiarizing.
“Who will stand up and get things done this
year and in the years to come? This Club does
not run by itself! It needs people, both women
and men, from the rank and file, members to make things hap-
pen. This administration is looking to you to carry your share of
the burden of running this Club as many, many others have done
in our 67 year history”. As Debbie said last month (13 months
ago now), “we need a throng of volunteers . . . willing to give of their time freely for the good of the Club.”
I also want to thank Alan Fletcher and his entire team for the
great job they did last year. Your new team hopes to do as well.
The main reason I have not wanted to be president is be-
cause the president has to write a full page message each month.
I was told that the full page president's message is a relatively
new idea and that in the past, we didn't have one. So, I'm happy
to be your new president who doesn't have to write a full page
message each month. I apologize in advance to the 7 people
who actually read these things. As the previous editor of the
Oasis, I learned that most members look first of all at the activi-
ties they're interested in, and then at the pictures. So, from now
on, the front page is going to feature an activity for the month
or a bunch of pictures. I may throw in a dumb joke sometimes
too.
Our goal for this year is the same as I’m sure the goal has al-
ways been. We’re going to make sure every member has as
much fun with as little hassle as possible. We will be asking for
your input.
Hank Merrill, President 2015-2016 (Sunglasses because of the spotlight)

Members should bring enough food to share to allow wine to be consumed and still be able to drive home safely.
You don’t have to be a GOURMET cook to enjoy this group! But if you enjoy explor-ing new recipes, eating GREAT meals and meeting new friends, Gourmet is the group for
you! In Gourmet, groups of people come together once a month – usually on the first Saturday - to share a good
meal. As a participant of Gourmet you can expect to be a host home (for 8 or more people) at least one time
from September through June. Each month hosts get together to plan a meal. The host prepares the entrée and
individuals attending the dinner bring a menu item and their own beverage. Next Gourmet is Saturday,
June 6, 2015 at 6:30pm. RSVP no later than May15, 2015. Contact Jody for more details.

C.R. ENGLAND TRUCKING COMPANY Please join us Wednesday, June 24, 2015, when we will tour the very impressive
headquarters of C.R. England Trucking Company, the nation’s largest refrigerated trucking company. England
Trucking had a very humble beginning 90 plus years ago in a small farming town of Plain City, Utah west of
Ogden, when Chester R. England decided there was an easier way to make a living than farming. Chester
bought his first Model T truck in 1920 with the idea of providing farm-to-market service for farmers in Weber
County and Cache Valley. From that beginning grew one of the leading trucking companies of today, special-
izing in nationwide moving of temperature-sensitive food and other products.

MARATHON BRIDGE Marathon Bridge will continue through the summer. We will operate like regu-
lar Marathon Bridge below. Same rules, same scoring, same place, same time.
It will cost $5 to join for the three months: June, July, and August. The monthly cost will be $14 for lunch and
prizes.
The regular Marathon Bridge season will begin in September and ends in May. We use party bridge rotation and
scoring - it is not duplicate—but you do need to be at least an advanced beginner to be comfortable. Men are
welcome in this group. Bridge is played on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00am. All games will be
played at the Golden Corral on 7200 S and 700 E. It costs $10 to join and $14.00 per month for lunch and priz-
es. We are signing up for September 2015, send an email or call to be put on the list. This is not an ironclad
commitment. You will be contacted this summer to confirm. Contact us, we have a really good time!
BRIDGE FOR FUN! For singles and couples - men and women - this group is for members who play bridge
just for the fun of it – all levels of players are welcome! We meet on the third
Wednesday of each month in member’s homes. Participants bring appetizers;
drinks and dessert are provided by the hosting member. Eating/socializing begin at 6:00pm with bridge beginning
by 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome. Please don’t hesitate to call to get in on a FUN night of Bridge.
