Shirley Shafer called a few days before Thanksgiving to let us know that Lynn fell and broke his hip. He is under medical care. At this time, Brent is with his father at the hospital. Lisa will leave early from teaching tomorrow to be with her mother and father. Lynn fell at home. Shirley added that the Life Line response was immediate. Shirley respectfully requests no visitors and no phone calls. However, a card sent to their 1081 S. Bonneville Drive, SLC 84108 address certainly would be welcomed.
Paintings by two of our RMSG members, Lynn Shafer and Mary Leaper, were selected as finalists in the annual Utah Senior Images Art Show. Their works were on public display for a month in November/December in the old City/County Building.

GOURMET Shhhhhhh! Here's a secret: Nobody in this group is
a GOURMET cook! But we do love to try out new recipes and share them! If you enjoy exploring new recipes, eating GREAT meals and meeting new friends, Gourmet is the group for you! In Gourmet, groups of people come together once a month – usually on the first Saturday - to share a good meal. Each participant hosts a group of 6-8 one time from September through June. The host prepares the entree and individuals attending the dinner bring a pre-determined menu item and their own beverage. Pretty simple, right? Come join us! Everyone – singles and couples – is welcome! Contact Jody for more details. Next Gourmet is Sunday, January 3 for a “ring-in-the-new year” brunch. RSVP to Jody by December 26.

A HUNDRED AND ONE PURPLE HATS
WOW! Our Ladies of the Needle knit and contributed 101 purple, newborn hats to support November Purple Hat Month for Shaken Baby Syndrome. During the month of November, a hand knit or crocheted, pur-ple hat is sent home with every new born baby, as well as information to educate parents about the effects of a shaken baby. Our contribution went to Riverton Hospital’s Mother and Baby Unit. A thank you and a hug for all the knitters who participat-ed in the Purple Hats knitting drive. A special thank you goes out to Jody Andes for her contribution of heavenly yarn. Jody does not knit and it is her way of supporting Blazing Needles and the knitting of purple hats. Another special thank you goes to The Assistance League of SLC. Marilu Petersen, a knitter and a Board Member of the ALSLC, received a contribution of opened yarn that cannot be sold in the Thrift Store. Marilu dug through masses of yarn, pulled out the ba-by yarn and contributed it to the knitting of hats for the nonprofit Purple Hat month. What goes around comes around. We hope this will continue to be a Newcomers’ Community Project. Please call Gail Senteney, 801-256-0530 or Debbie Reeves, 801-573-5352 for information AND we welcome all knitters and donations of yarn.
VOLUNTEERS REQUESTED - ENGLISH SKILLS LEARNING CENTER Millie Wetterberg would like Newcomers' help in supporting the non-profit refugee program English Skills Learning Center either by donation or by becoming a volunteer and donating time to teach English. Lea Cotter looked up their website English Skills Learning Center and below is a description of the work the center does.
Mission: The English Skills Learning Center provides individualized English instruction to adult English language. We recruit, train, and supervise volunteers who then teach our students twice a week in Salt Lake County. We currently have 300 volunteer teachers in-structing around 800 students on a yearly basis from over 40 different countries. Our ap-proach focuses on empowering our students to become better integrated members of American society. We have operated continuously since 1988, and provide the only free and individualized ESL program in Salt Lake County, Utah.

KUED Membership Drive Monday, Nov 30, 2015 Thank you, KUED, for giving the Newcomers’ Club the opportunity to volunteer for your Membership Drive, taking membership pledges from KUED supporters. It was a unique and memorable experience for the 15 Newcomers’ members who participated. From the minute we arrived at the KUED studios, we were welcomed with enthusiasm and made to feel we were very important to the success of the drive. There was training (see photo) on how to take calls and record pledge information on the computer followed by a lovely buffet dinner. It is hoped the Membership Drive is a success. The Newcom-ers' Club would welcome the opportunity to participate in the KUED Membership Drive again next year.
