Friday 23 July Term 3 Week 2

MEET OUR CULTURALLY NOURISHING TEAMThe Culturally Nourishing Schooling Project Team was formed this year in partnership with the Department of Education, The AECG, University of New South Wales (or UNSW), University of Southern Queensland & Queensland University of Technology (or QUT) our Executive, Aboriginal Education Officer Ms Kingi, Ms Ryan a group of our teachers and local cultural mentors.

The purpose of this team is to improve the education of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, connect people and place, learn from Country and engage critically with curriculum planning.

Our first workshop focused on cross curriculum priority, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. Starting from a place of RESPECT, we reflected on our resources and their use in the classroom.

As our aim is to produce improved learning outcomes and experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and to engage productively with the local community, we asked ourselves: “What do we need to do differently as educators and an education system”? Are we thinking about and approaching learning on, from and with Country in new or different ways? Turn to page 5 for further information.

CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEKOn Monday, Year 10 Food Technology had the opportunity to participate in a practical cooking lesson to celebrate NAIDOC week. Turn to page 3 for details.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTWelcome back! We have launched into a very busy Term 3.

Staff were actively involved in Staff Development Day on Monday July 12. Time was made available to staff to work on various activities and projects that are running in the school; including External Validation, TLC (Tweed Learning Community) transition activity planning, Culturally Nourishing Project (embedding indigenous culture into teaching programs); online mandatory training and some faculty preparation time. In addition, we had a team go to Coffs Harbour to participate in “Love Bites” facilitator training to enable members of staff to deliver workshops on respectful and positive relationships to our students.

External Validation is due on August 11. This has involved our entire Executive Team along with some interested classroom teachers evaluating our school and its programs against the School Excellence Framework (SEF). This is then submitted to an external Validation Team who will look at our submission and the evidence collected to support our evaluation and give us feedback as to how they believe we are performing when evaluated against the SEF. They will also work with us to produce some next steps as we move into the next phase of the planning cycle so that we are able to build on and improve what we are doing.

This has been an opportunity for staff to collaborate across the school and celebrate together all of the valuable programs that are in operation in our school, benefitting our students.

The Tweed Learning Community is a focus for our school. We are working towards rebuilding and strengthening our partnerships with our feeder primary schools. Staff have been working hard to develop some engaging activities for upper primary school students that will showcase our school and help develop a relationship with students and their families as they begin to transition to High School.

Building Works are continuing across the school. Demountables are in place at the front of the school to replace the Library, a classroom and a TAS workshop while the next part of our building works is taking place. The Library and Science blocks will be the next part of the school to be upgraded.

The refurbished block for the support unit is also underway. The old music block is being redesigned to accommodate our new support unit classes. It is starting to take form and should be in operation before the end of the year.

The VET Hub final design process is also underway. We are in the consultation phase with our specialist staff to ensure that the new buildings are purpose built and will meet the needs of our students and staff in the delivery of the VET subjects being offered.

The Culturally Nourishing project is a collaboration between university staff, TRHS staff and local cultural mentors. It continues to develop across our school and is another opportunity for our staff to continue their amazing work across many different KLA’s and embed and celebrate our cultural heritage in our teaching and learning programs. The team is working very hard and is making great progress.

COVID 19 continues to be a challenge across our state with the significant outbreak that has unfortunately occurred in Sydney recently. The DoE has developed a four-tier level system. Sydney and Greater Sydney schools are currently operating on level 4; learning from home. Regional NSW is working on level 2 restrictions which means essentially that mask wearing is recommended for staff and students indoors, normal classroom operation is able to occur, excursions are limited to the LGA and non-essential visitors are unable to be on site. These restrictions are in place until at least July 30 according to recent advice from the Department. Trial HSC Exams will go ahead at this stage as planned at TRHS in Weeks 4 and 5 beginning August 2nd. Year 12 students should be working very hard to consolidate their learning and preparing themselves for their exams. Their classroom teachers are the best source of help and they should be attending all of their classes every week and seeking help where required.

Our Academic and Sports Assemblies were held this week. I would like to thank all of our staff that worked very hard to make these happen. There are too many to mention here but our School Value of Team Work was very evident as all staff worked together to celebrate our students’ success. We are so fortunate to have such committed and talented staff and such hardworking students to celebrate. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we were unable to have parents and carers attend.

Our NAIDOC Assembly has been postponed due to COVID restrictions. It will now be held on August 24 in the hope that the Elders will be able to attend at that time.

Winter has truly arrived and with it, has arrived chilly mornings and bitter winds. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately warm for cold days by equipping them with uniform items suitable for cold weather. A reminder that only identified school uniform items are to be worn to school. At no point are non-school jumpers or hoodies allowed to be worn. Operating hours for the Uniform Shop are: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8am – 11am. Alternatively, uniform items may be purchased on line from our uniform shop by following this link;

NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONSStudents incorporated the use of Lemon Myrtle, a native Aboriginal bush food into their dampers. This was a great experience and a fun lesson enjoyed by all students in the class. Along with the practical lesson we discussed the benefits and uses of Lemon Myrtle as a popular ingredient used today in many foods.

The Culturally Nourishing Schools (CNS) project has been conceptualised as a whole-of-school endeavour aimed at affecting issues including the quality of leadership, socio-cultural and educational collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and teaching on the overall schooling environment. The project was conceived as a response to the paucity of evidence used to support current policy initiatives that have been focused on small scale and/or single-issue programs. These narrow approaches have left the foundational structures and underlying assumptions of the schooling of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students largely unchallenged in the task of teaching marginalised students and knowledges.

It is from a strengths-based position that the CNS project aims to focus on a systems-wide approach to transform the development and delivery of schooling to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Stemming from the identification of a series of interlocking intergenerational, structural, pedagogical, policy, and relational issues identified by the research team (Lowe et.al 2020), the foundational focus for those working with schools, in particular teachers and leaders, is to support improved and sustainable educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. It is anticipated that this will be achieved via both direct and indirect strategies aimed at facilitating change in teachers’ and schools’ understandings and ways of working about and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The overarching aims of the CNS project are to:

A1. Improve teachers’ epistemic knowledge and professional practices in support of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.

A2. Establish a sustainable base for the long-term collaboration between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families/communities and respective schools.

A3. Establish a whole-school model of schooling that supports the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.

Mrs Tracey Kingi, Aboriginal Education Officer & Mrs Moniott-Kerr, Teacher Librarian.

 Weekend of 10th - 12th September 2021

Interested in Human Powered Vehicle Racing? RACQ Queensland HPV (24hr) Championship The Fraser Coast Technology Challenge is a signature Human Powered Vehicle event where high school students design, make and race their human powered vehicles around the picturesque ‘street circuit” within the historical precinct of the Maryborough CBD.

Designing and building the ultimate speed machine, fuelled solely by pedal power, eight students work as a team to participate in the gruelling 24 hour endurance race competing against teams from throughout Australia. Racing commences at noon Saturday, by the time the chequered flag is lowered at 12 midday on Sunday, the teams will have pedalled more than 40,000km between them around the 1.5km track that includes a challenging hairpin and two downhill straights.

Tweed River High School has participated in every event since 2014, with the exception of the 2020 when COVID-19 cancelled the event. This annual event is eagerly awaited by existing team members and those hoping to join. New team members are always welcome.

We travel to Maryborough by bus on Friday with the HPV vehicles being towed behind on a trailer along with our camping gear and spare parts. The “pit crew” is responsible for the vehicles during the race with as little teacher intervention as possible.

During the night, riders rotate through as drivers. They exit the vehicle after their stint behind the peddles, waking the next rider on the rota who warms up ready to take to the track with cleated shoes, safety glasses, helmet and gloves. It is usual for a rider to be able to race for approx. 1 hour which allows all team members to get around 7 hours uninterrupted sleep in our cosy camp setup. Although someone will be racing at all times throughout the 24 hour event.

Meals have been prepared in the past either by purchasing the onsite menu meal service or by staff and parents undertaking the cooking. This year we are considering the purchase of the meals. Alternatively, if we cook, we will need volunteers to do the catering for: 2 x breakfasts, 2 x morning teas, 2 x lunches, 2 x night meals. Takeaway meals are used to supplement a couple of these. Healthy snacks will be necessary.

The school provides a race uniform consisting of a t-shirt and a hat. The school has a number of pairs of cleated shoes to provide for student use. This is also the case for safety glasses. Helmets and gloves are provided by the student. Warm clothing at night is advisable when sitting around, but the day temperatures are around 30 °C and can be quite warm compared to the temperatures in Tweed Heads at this time of year.

Riders will need to be collected from school on the Sunday night upon arrival before 7pm. Students will be arriving back very sleepy and hungry, even though we will have a snack stop north of Brisbane at around 4pm on the way home. On the trip up we generally stop for morning tea just north of Brisbane and again for lunch at Gympie allowing an easy drive to Maryborough by 3pm when we can set up camp, register riders, crew and visitors and undertake vehicle scrutineering and final checks such as rider rotation. Then we eat and rest before the big race.
