Dear Friends, On a recent Saturday morning, I attended a workshop at Slater Baptist Church. Although the glorious fall weekend called, it was more important that I learn all I could about addiction issues affecting our community and the resources available. This is a very personal issue for me. I tragically lost my sister last year to an accidental drug overdose. I know I am not alone. Opioid overdoses killed more than 29,000 people in our country last year; 748 in South Carolina. By 2015, SC ranked near the top for per-person painkiller prescriptions and has seen those prescriptions increase yearly. Greenville County is the epicenter for opioid-related deaths. Prescription drug abuse destroys families, negatively impacts our local economy, and increases crimes of violence and property crimes. For Judi, It’s Personal Last year, legislation was introduced in the House to address the state’s growing opioid problem. Drug education and prevention programs, a “Good Samaritan” law, a physician’s database of patient prescription information, and more education on controlled substances for health care providers were proposed. But when opioids become scarce, people turn to heroin and other street drugs, just as my sister did. Prevention and law enforcement are a start, but this is a community problem—a people problem. Physicians must be trained to recognize and treat addiction, and patients must be offered affordable opioid maintenance treatment and addiction recovery resources. I will work across the Statehouse aisle to find real commonsense solutions for the Upstate and support the fine organizations helping addicts. It’s what my sister would want me to do. News October 22, 2018 Why Judi Wants to Serve As someone who loves a good challenge and finding solutions, I could no longer sit back and ignore what is happening in South Carolina: we rank near the bottom in education, healthcare and poverty levels and at the top for opioid abuse, domestic violence and corruption. As a former Senator, I’m no stranger to finding solutions to vexing issues and being a champion for the things that affect your quality of life. I am running to be your next Representative because these problems have been ignored long enough. I am running because I want to be your voice, and I want to help bring integrity back to Columbia.
