Conservation AreasVISITOR’S GUIDE

Welcome to Credit Valley Conservation’s (CVC) parks. We invite you to think of these areas as your own. Please respect and enjoy these special places as much as we do, while you relive fond memories or make new ones. We encourage you to experience the Credit River watershed, from the shores of Lake Ontario to the headwaters at Island Lake in Orangeville. Whether you like to fly fish for Brown Trout or paddle a canoe, one of our 10 conservation areas has an opportunity for you. While this guide will provide general information about our parks, we invite you to explore them and find your own piece of paradise. When you discover how much you really love these conservation areas (and we know you will), consider becoming a member to enjoy savings all year.

Memberships are available from staff, online at www.ourcredit.ca or by phone at 1.800.367.0890.

MESSAGE

Island Lake CA is a valued natural heritage and recreational resource within the Credit River watershed.

In 1967, construction of two dams flooded a deciduous thicket, swamp and small lake creating a 182-hectare reservoir, first known as the Orangeville Reservoir. It is now named Island Lake, not because of the islands the flooding created, but after an original settler to the area.

The south dam controls water flow into the Credit River, improving water quality and enhancing the health and beauty of the Upper Credit watershed.

Terra Cotta Conservation Area, consisting of 485 acres of unique natural environment on the Niagara Escarpment, has gone through significant changes. The area was previously used as a recreational facility with campsites, parking lots and a swimming pool. In the interest of restoring this property to its natural state, these areas have been replanted with an award winning man-made wetland, used to teach the importance of wetlands. Fishing opportunities at Terra Cotta include Largemouth Bass in Wolf Lake and stocked Rainbow Trout in Muskrat Pond. Ontario Fishing Regulations apply.

Belfountain Conservation Area is situated on the Niagara Escarpment in the valley of the West Credit River. The spring-fed waters of this river sustain cold-water fish such as Brook and Brown Trout, offering ample angling opportunities. Walk along cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment and watch freshwater springs flowing down limestone cliffs.

The ‘belle’ fountain, suspensionbridge and Yellowstone Cave, complete with cement stalactites, were built by Charles W. Mack, inventor of the cushion rubber stamp in 1908. Mack also addedstonewalls, footpaths, scenic lookouts and a guesthouse.

Invasive species are increasingly threatening our local water and can greatly impact our fisheries.

What are they?Invasive species are plants or animals situated in areas outside their known natural range as a result of an accidental or intentional introduction by human activities. They harm the environment, economy or society.

How are they dangerous? These species may feed on native species or compete for food, as well as introduce native species to new parasites. This is one of the leading causes of threatened or endangered species.

Invasive species are most commonly spread by hitching a ride on a boat, trailer, fishing gear or equipment, including bait buckets.

Upper Credit Conservation Area is the newest addition to CVC’s 10 public conservation areas. It contributes to the longest stretch of publicly owned lands along the Credit River. It acts as a green corridor allowing for movement of different species and promoting a healthy and sustainable ecosystem. Four hundred acres of lands have been secured since 2005.

This part of the Credit River is identified as a critical cold-water fish community. This cold-water system supports Brook Trout, indicating the health and integrity of this important fish community.

The area is also home to many bird species including the Bobolink, Common Grackle, Mourning Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Dark-eyed Junco, and White-throated Sparrow. You may even see a great Blue Heron near the water’s edge.

Over 12 acres of provincially significant wetlands are present here and is part of the Alton Wetland Complex. Wetlands improve source water protection and provide homes for a wide variety of amphibians and mammals.

Silver Creek Conservation Area is CVC’s largest land holding and protects many significant natural features including the headwaters of Silver Creek, a Credit River tributary. This area includes a large Niagara Escarpment valley and many representative features of the area’s natural splendor. Wander past babbling brooks, lush forests, and escarpment rocks as you explore this little taste of wilderness near urban and rural settings.

Thanks to provincial funding, hard work and volunteer hours, we now enjoy a new addition at Silver Creek Conservation Area. A 120-metre boardwalk was built to protect the pond’s sensitive shoreline from trail widening and soil compaction. A 25-metre U-shaped dock was also added to allow for access to the pond for the Silver Creek Education Centre’s pond dipping studies. In order to protect the threatened amphibians that live here and in the surrounding area, this project became a necessity. Wildlife viewing is now safer for both animals and visitors.

Once an abandoned CP rail corridor, the Elora Cataract Trailway was formed through co-operation of Credit Valley Conservation, Grand River Conservation Authority and the Elora Cataract Trailway Association. Since acquisition of the right-of-way by the two Conservation Authorities in 1993, the Authorities have met their goal of creating a greenway through which people can explore their environment in different ways, while protecting natural and cultural heritage values.

The trailway is three metres wide with a stone-screened surface suitable for walking with strollers, wheelchairs or cycling. The trail is open year-round and provides four seasons of recreation, such as cross-country skiing, horseback riding, hiking, cycling, or snowmobiling. Please note some sections of the trail have limited recreational uses.

A visit to Limehouse Conservation Area is an opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the Niagara Escarpment as well as the cultural heritage of its past. The Bruce Trail and its side trails take visitors through a variety of escarpment landscapes. They lead into its geological heart at an area known as the “Hole in the Wall”, where ladders cut through fissures in the escarpment rock.

Trails also take visitors past remnants of the lime industry in Ontario. Stand before huge lime kilns and associated features such as an old powderhouse. These cultural heritage resources of the 1800’s are representative of an important part of Ontario‘s past associated with Niagara Escarpment resources.

There are many historic features located in Limehouse CA. For your safety, please remain on the designated Bruce Trail or side trail at all times and obey all signs and fencing throughout the property.

Rattray Marsh is an “environmental gem” located in a unique natural setting within the City of Mississauga. As the last remaining lakefront marsh between Toronto and Burlington, this environmentally sensitive wetland offers a different experience for nature lovers.

Secured by CVC in 1972, and officially opened in 1975, Rattray Marsh represents many things to visitors. Some remember how it was saved from the developer who planned to fill it in and build homes, while others remember it as a living classroom where they come for guided tours to learn about nature.

Rattray is home to a large variety of wildflowers, which include Ontario‘s Large-flowered Trillium, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Red-berried Nightshade. Bird watchers relish in sighting the ever-present Wood Warbler, Eastern Kingbirds, Tree Swallows, Grey Catbirds and Spotted Sandpipers. Wildlife within the marsh includes rabbits, beaver, deer and occasionally foxes. Other creatures include the vocal Spring Peeper, American toad, turtles, snakes and more.

This conservation area is not only home of Credit Valley Conservation’s administration office, it is also home to unique natural, cultural and recreational resources. The Credit River meanders through the property and the Glassford Trail takes visitors along its banks and through the floodplain. Keep an eye out for birds of prey in the fields nearby. If you look closely enough along sections of trail, you may see remnants of early settlement with mill and farm ruins still visible. The nearby Village of Meadowvale was designated as Ontario’s first heritage conservation district in 1980.

Much of the property, including the whole east side of the river, is managed by City of Mississauga. The Culham Trail is a City of Mississauga trail that travels through the property and connects many parks and neighbourhoods. The east side of the property has picnic and group area rentals. Contact the City of Mississauga, Parks and Recreation Department for details or call 905.615.4100.
