QMcDonald’s Filet-O-Fish began as an LTO Lent special in one McDonald’s location in 1962. Today, McDonald’s sells 300 million Filet-O-Fish sandwiches each year, with nearly 25% of those sales coming during Lent.¹
QIn 2015, Red Robin invited the Pope to eat at any of their US locations during Lent, hoping to generate pub-licity for their new Wild Pacific Crab Cake Burger Lent LTO. The chain promised its customers free Wild Pacific Crab Cake Burgers if the Pope took them up on their offer. He didn’t, but the scheme worked – the item sold well, and Red Robin brought the LTO back the next year.²
QNon-seafood chains such as Steak ‘n Shake, Quiznos, Burger King, Wendy’s and Domino’s have added Lent promos in the past few years to capitalize on Lent sales.²
QIndependent operators are capitalizing on Lent sales, too. Popular independent Chicago restaurants John Barleycorn, Moe’s Cantina, Revolution Brewing, The Gage, and others were written up in influential dining publi-cations such as Eater Chicago and Timeout Chicago for their Lent specials in recent years.³
