3 MDE 2015 Conference Program
Dear Conference Delegates,
Bremen welcomes you to the 1st International Conference on Migration and Diaspora
Entrepreneurship. The time for the conference could not have been much better. Migration is
among the hottest topic of global societies with all its opportunities and pitfalls. We are still
deeply shocked by terror attacks and at the same time trying to give our helping hands to
refugees that leave their home country to find a place to live in peace. And the approaching
Christmas time appeals to thinking in terms of charity, mutual understanding and sense of
belongingness. At the same time, many nations find themselves confronted with open
questions of welcoming, helping and integrating refugees in societies.
Entrepreneurship is one response, one concept to be considered in this vein. Entrepreneurship
offers people the chance to care for their own, to do things they like and raise own potentials
by doing something that is relevant for others. Nevertheless, entrepreneurship is, by far, no
one-way street to success but a rocky road with numerous challenges and threats. Migrants
and diasporas show a higher interest in entrepreneurship than other members of the society.
Insofar, it is useful to address migration and diaspora entrepreneurship issues in transnational
societies and to deepen the insights accumulated by prior research.
This first conference on migration and diaspora entrepreneurship builds on the results of prior
workshops in Bremen (Germany) and Turku (Finland). It seeks to deepen the relationships of
the researchers and to develop a scientific community that deals with these issues on a regular
basis. Moreover, new results of running research projects are presented and discussed. A
panel discussion on refugee entrepreneurship that involves researchers, practitioners and
policy-makers is a forum for the exchange of ideas in a rather new and unexplored field. This
all helps to develop the research agenda and to move on.
In this vein, we do hope that you enjoy your stay in Bremen. Maybe you have some time to
take a private look at the Christmas markets in the city center around the old market and the
medieval one at the riverside. Besides that Bremen has a lot more to offer. Just take a look at
St. Peter’s Cathedral, the historical Schütting building of the chamber of commerce (the oldest
one allover Germany), the lovely Schnoor Quarter or the vigorous Ostertor Quarter (“Viertel”),
to name but a few.
We are looking forward to getting in touch with you.

MDE-Conference
The MDE-Conference is an international conference which aims at a better
understanding of challenges in the realm of migration and diaspora entrepreneurship.
Migration paths become more and more important and modern nations tend to be or
become transnational societies. This conference brings together international
researchers from different backgrounds who investigate in entrepreneurial and business
activities of migrants as well as diasporans.
Due to its transnational nature, the phenomenon and their entrepreneurial activities are
highly heterogeneous and complex, which requires more interdisciplinary work. The
MDE-Conference offers a creative and inspiring atmosphere to allow participants to
productively (co-)develop their research initiatives. The series of the ‘ZenTra workshops
on migration and diaspora entrepreneurship’, predecessors of the MDE-Conference,
have already taken a huge step to create a researcher’s community of this research area.
This conference will continue to foster further research partnerships on a local and
international level.

Conference Sponsors With the generous support of wiwib.e.V. (Wirtschaft-Wissenschaft Bremen) and the Faculty
of Business Studies & Economics of the University of Bremen, the 1st International
Conference on Migration and Diaspora Entrepreneurship can be organized without
conference fee from participants. On behalf of the organizational committees, we would like
to thank our supporters for so kindly sponsoring this event.
wiwib e.V.
The booster club „ wiwib e.V.“ is supporting the faculty for economics at the University since
2001. The association sees its primary function in the encouragement of a dialog between
the faculty for economics and the association members with the purpose of supporting the
partically orientated academic research for the benefit of the Bremen region and its
companies.
The importance of business studies and economics can clearly be seen when considering
some of the challenges facing Germany and Europe as industrial powers; the importance of
globalization and networked production, ecologically compatible and sustainable economic
development, innovations and the use of multimedia as well as international financial
markets. To meet these challenges, we need decision makers capable of understanding the
macro- and microeconomic principles of such issues. Consequently, the Faculty's potential
in the fields of teaching, research and consultancy is of great significance for the economy
and future development in the face of regional and international competition.

City of Bremen
History of Bremen
Bremen, the cosmopolitan city on the Weser river, looks back on
1,200 years of history. Although the grand old buildings
around the market square betray its roots as an ancient
trading center, Bremen has the feeling of a thriving city on
the up. Besides its cosmopolitan appeal, Bremen offers a
journey back through the centuries, full of monuments to a
distinguished history and bristling with enthralling stories.
There are pretty little houses lined up like pearls on a string,
donkeys that shake hands and a cathedral under close
observation.
The 600-year-old town hall, whose Weser Renaissance-styled facade was added in the last years, and
the Roland Statue erected in 1404, are the most precious cultural treasures in Bremen. Since 2004
they have been protected by UNESCO as a piece of world heritage.
University of Bremen
The University of Bremen is one of 11 institutions classed as an „Elite university“ in Germany.
Approximately 20000 students are studying, teaching,
researching, and working in for the university. It has become
the science center of North West Germany.
Its commitment was rewarded with the title “Stadt der
Wissenschaft 2005” (City of Science of 2005), which science,
politics, business and culture won jointly for Bremen and
Bremerhaven, by the Foundation for German Science
(Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft).
Some of the paths that were taken back then, also referred
to as the „Bremen model“, have since become characteristics of modern universities, such as
interdisciplinary, explorative learning, social relevance to practice-oriented project studies which
enjoy a high reputation in the academic world as well as in business and industry. Other reform
approaches of the former ‘new university’ have proven to be errors such as waiving a mid-level
faculty, tripartite representation or too “student-friendly” examination regulations and were given
up in Bremen a few years down the track.

Touristic Attractions
The Town Musicians of Bremen
You can see the famous sculpture outside the town hall. These four animals from a famous fairytale is the most popular attraction in Bremen.
THE VIERTEL
Viertel (literally „quarter“), consisting of
the subdistricts Ostertor and Steintor of
two different administrative districts, is a
centrally situated suburb. Here you can

House of Science
The House of Science is a non-profit organization designed to establish understanding and appreciation towards science to the broader community in and around Bremen. It is one outcome of Bremen having won the „City of Science Bremen_Bremerhaven 2005“ award. The title brought forward a number of networking activities between different partners from the fields of science, economy, art and education, which had been established with the application for the award. Initially founded by ten institutions, today thirteen bodies support the House of Science – as well financially as with regard to content, for instance by contributing knowledge and exhibits.
The House of Science is constantly aiming to promote and expand cooperations of different actors within society and science. It offers exhibitions, lectures, talks, discussions and more.
Science gives a fresh impetus to structural change, to the modernization and economic development of Bremen and it plays a key role in European integration. The House of Science situated in Bremen’s city center is a visible messenger of the prominent role science takes on.
