ers, etc., that individual Clubs have been unable to do. Besides the
Zones working together, all the Lioness Clubs have combined
together to provide financial assistance for much needed equip-
ment.
At the Convention, Kiama Lions Club launched a new project
that may be of interest to many in the Lions Family, especially
those with young children or grandchildren, and perhaps more
importantly, for visually impaired children. The Club has estab-
lished ―The Children‘s Audio Theatre‖ to provide full cast
dramatizations of classic children‘s stories to organisations affili-
ated with Vision Australia, and for sale. The first two audio books
are ―The Adventures of Blinky Bill‖ and ―The Story of Dr. Dolit-
tle‖ Each audion book, with music and sound effects, is recorded
in MP3 format and is over two hours of entertainment.
For members intending to go to the National Convention in
Launceston, it is imperative that you make your booking as soon
as possible because an AFL match has been scheduled for that
weekend.
Recently the District Clubs were surveyed by email about pro-
jects where they collected items for other organisations. 43
Clubs reported they collected some of 5 different items, eye-
glasses, used stamps, corks, aluminium can ring pulls, and sta-
tionery and school items for the Solomon Islands. Eyeglasses =
36 Clubs, Stamps = 23 Clubs, Corks = 6 Clubs, Ring pulls = 1
Club, School Supplies = 1 Club.
Overall the District is working very well, membership has in-
creased, Zones are working as units and a blueprint has been pro-
duced to develop future development.
A BEACON OF HOPE ―When the raging storms of life rush in, bringing darkness
When the dreams fade and despair takes its place
Then like a faithful lighthouse on the distant shore
A Lion stands as a ray of light to show the way.”
Warren Woods, 201N2 District Governor 2010-2011
At the end of December I have visited 48 Lions Clubs, 6 Lioness
Clubs, Charter of the Ambarvale High School Leo Club, two
District Conventions, Bega‘s 50th Anniversary Dinner, together
with numerous other Club visits and meetings. It never ceases to
amaze me of the diverse nature of our Clubs and to learn in de-
tail the projects that they carry out. All Clubs truly practice the
motto of our Organisation ―We Serve‖ with their ability to assist
individuals as well as our communities.
At the beginning of a new year and a new decade we must be
very aware and concerned about the devastating floods in Aus-
tralia. We always assist when disasters occur overseas, but this
time it‘s in our own ―backyard‖ and many of those affected may
be family members or friends. Clubs are asked to assist in rais-
ing funds to purchase much needed goods. Cheques should be
made payable to District 201N2 and sent to Cabinet Treasurer,
Gary Parker. Moneys are sent to the Australian Lions Founda-
tion who will distribute the donations on an equitable basis to
the areas affected.
The current Global Membership Team newsletter shows our
District membership is 1725, an increase of 21 since the end of
June. Female Members make up 25.75 % of our total member-
ship. The approximate average of our members is 62.77 with the
average length of service being 12.24. In an endeavour to arrest
the loss of four Clubs in the last twelve months, on the 6th No-
vember the District ran a guiding Lion and Extension Day
Workshop with 18 members attending including 11 of our 13
Zone Chairmen. Areas were identified where it may be possible
to form either a new Lions Club, a Lioness Club, a Leo Club or
even a Club Branch. Yass Lions Club is forming a Leo Club at
Yass High School, and two ACT Clubs, and one in Sydney, are
looking at forming Clubs. Investigations are well under way for
a Lioness Club on the Southern Highlands. The National T.V.
membership promotion has proven to be effective in our District
with enquiries coming through on a regular basis.
Cabinet and the Clubs from Zone 5 (Bega, Bemboka, Bermagui,
Narooma, Pambula Merimbula, Tathra and Eden Lioness) have
conducted a full page promotion in the four local newspapers to
increase membership. Although this was only conducted late last
year, there has been many positive enquiries.
As mentioned previously, I‘m concentrating on improving the
knowledge and efficiency of our Zone Chairmen. I believe that
they are the key to a successful District, they are at the ―coal
face‖, and know what is happening on a daily basis. Since then
the results have been very satisfactory with Clubs now working
together within their Zone. Zone Dinners, and Picnics have been
organised and Clubs have been combining to finance Hart Walk-
STOP PRESS
N2 members have donated $200,000+ to ALF to assist those
affected by the floods, cyclones, & the earthquake in NZ.
PLEASE ADVISE TREASURER GARY PARKER OF ALL
FUNDS RAISED TO ASSIST THOSE AFFECTED.
Lion June Field has been appointed the National Christmas
Cake Committee N Districts State Coordinator for 3 years.
Lion John Smith has been appointed the Lion Mint Australia
Sub-Committee N Districts State Coordinator for 3 years.
Congratulations from DG Warren Woods

Cabinet Secretary Notes
Six months down and six to go. During the next six months
clubs have a number of responsibilities. With the MD Conven-
tion in Launceston there are the all important Returns 3 and 4 to
fill out. It is important that these returns are to me by the due
date of 11 March – especially Return 3 with names for the Re-
membrance Ceremony.
As well the PU101 returns are required. I asked in the last News-
letter if you could consider having your elections 1 – 2 weeks
earlier than required. This is so that I can have a significant
number of the returns in before the MD Convention and start the
updates to the District Directory
For the returns after you have entered the 4 club officers for next
year check that the information that we require is on the form.
Does the home phone number appear – if not update the records.
Also make sure that there is an email address. If there is no
home email address in the database that officer will not be able
to receive their password and other correspondence. Make sure
that the Club meeting information is correct.
What is not on the PU101 is the following, which you can write
in the body of the email if you are sending it: Club email ad-
dress, Club Postal Address. These two pieces of information aer
vital for good communication in the District and Lions in gen-
eral.

(Club/District)
It‘s a great pleasure to start the year on a positive note, I have
just received the current Organ Donation Figures from the Aus-
tralian and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry and the Or-
gan and Tissue Authority. There has been a record number of
Organ and Tissue Donations for the year 2010, 309 deceased
Australians have donated their Organs and Tissues, which, in
turn, have helped to save or significantly improve the lives of
931 Australians, who were relying on a transplant. This trans-
plant figure is the highest in more than a decade.
This is a wonderful credit to those people who so generously
donated and to their families who honoured the wishes of their
deceased loved ones. This means improved health and life span
for other Australians who were the beneficiaries of the dona-
tions and demonstrates that the message to encourage more
people to discuss with their loved ones their wish to donate
their organs and tissues is getting through.
Figures for NSW, deceased donors for 2009 = 69, 2010 = 87.
Figures for ACT, deceased donors for 2009 + 8, 2010 = 10.
These figures are extremely gratifying and will bring renewed
hope to those people on the waiting lists for transplant surgery.
Lions ,I believe we can and are, having a great influence in
public awareness in this program, continue to encourage the
public to , Discover—Decide—Discuss. This is a continuing
program, please keep up the good work.
Thank You for your support.

Lion Peter Stapleton OAM
PROFILE
Peter was born to Lyal and Pearl Stapleton (nee Brown) on the
30th August, 1929 at Nowra, NSW. Peter‘s father was a carpen-
ter who followed work wherever it could be found during the
great depression. The youngest of four boys, Peter started his
schooling at a two room schoolhouse at Quaama Public School
(near Bega) & then attended schools at Cobargo, Bega, Bungen-
dore and at St.Gregorys, Queanbeyan.
When Peter left school at the age of sixteen he worked in the
department store chain J.B.Young Ltd. In Queanbeyan, Men-
swear Department. He then trained at Canberra TAFE in Sign-
writing & did a correspondence course in Visual Merchandising
at Chicago Professions College. From Menswear Peter then be-
came Display Manager for all seven of Young‘s Stores and re-
mained there for twelve years. He then left to start up his own
business in screen printing and signwriting. He also kept up in
retail promotions by doing contract work with Lend Lease Re-
tail at Monaro Mall (which later became Canberra Centre). Dur-
ing these years Peter met a Cairns‘ girl, Clare Rorrey, they mar-
ried in Cairns, and over a period of time they became proud par-

Nowra Lions collect for
Q3 flood victims
L-R Lion Sally Wilton (Zone 3 Chairperson), Louise Maegher, Lion Fred Vormister, & Lion Robert Wright (President of Nowra Lions Club).
Photo supplied by Sally Wilton.
Nowra Lions Club President Robert Wright, after speaking
with N2 District Governor Warren Woods, and Q3 District
Governor Beverley Bates of Toowoomba, set up an appeal in
the Shoalhaven area to donate Clothing and or Blankets for
the people who need help in the flooded areas of Queensland,
and Northern N.S.W.
The Nowra Lions Club have been asking for 1 or 2 items of
either new or unwanted clothing in good order, and or blan-
kets and linen. This being one item per person, and with a
population of around 30,000 in and around Nowra, if only
half of these people give, there would be around 10,000
pieces of clothing to assist the flood victims.
Q3 District Governor Beverley Bates said that in the flooded
areas, something to wear and something warm for nights is
more paramount than money at this time. Money may follow
later, but people need these things now, as many will not be
able to return to their homes in some cases for weeks.
Nowra Removals have very generously offered to transport
the donations free of charge to Toowoomba, QLD. John and
Sandi Rutledge, another generous couple from Tapatalee,
have offered storage and the use of their shop as a drop off
point for the donations.
Mr. John Massey has donated the premises at 44 Junction
Street, Nowra for the collection and sorting of the Donations,
and most of the Members of the Nowra Lions Club are work-
ing on a roster system, from 9am, to 4pm sorting and packing
these items (photo below).
The Appeal started on the 5th January, 2011 and continued to
the 10th January, when the truck collected all the boxes for
transportation to QLD.
This is only a short period of time, but according to DG Bev-
erley Bates, these items are needed urgently.
With the help of the local radio station 2ST, and the local
newspapers, the Shoalhaven people and the Nowra Commu-
nity have opened up their hearts and their wardrobes, and in 3
days have been able to fill over 100 cartons to be sent off on
Monday, 10th January, to be distributed by the QLD Lions
Clubs in the flooded areas of Queensland and Northern NSW.

LCIF PROVIDING RELIEF IN NEW ZEALAND
(Updated March 2, 2011)
Lions and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) are
providing relief following a devastating earthquake in Christ-
church, New Zealand. LCIF has awarded US$110,000 to aid
Lions in their relief efforts. US$10,000 is being used for imme-
diate emergency relief supplies and a US$100,000 major catas-
trophe grant will assist with longer-term efforts.
"Right now Margit and I are on our way to New Zealand to
meet with Lions and view their current relief efforts. We will
also meet with the mayor and Red Cross to discuss future
plans," said Chairperson Eberhard J. Wirfs.
On February 22, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake devastated Christ-
church, New Zealand, killing at least 149 and injuring hun-
dreds more, with these numbers expected to increase. Thou-
sands have been left homeless. Clean drinking water has been
compromised and more than 60 aftershocks have been re-
corded since the initial quake.
Many Lions have personally been impacted by the disaster, yet
they are giving their time and service to help their neighbors.
"At an emergency meeting of the Earthquake Committee last
night, I spoke to one Lion who had damage to his house, his
place of work was closed, he had no power, water or sewerage
connections yet was still attending a Lions meeting to see how
he could assist the citizens of Christchurch," said Past Interna-
tional Director Ron Luxton.
Lions Clubs International Foundation is committed to aiding
communities affected by natural disasters. LCIF is in close
communication with the Lions of District 202-E. Local Lions
responded immediately to this crisis by securing and distribut-
ing large supplies of bottled water throughout Christchurch and
the surrounding suburbs. District Governor Raewyn Clearwa-
ter indicated that, ―the people were so grateful to the Lions for
the water, that many of the residents wanted to help pay for the
costs … [they] were so moved that, although affected them-
selves, Lions were helping out the people of the city.‖
LCIF Board policy states that designated funds are not eligi-
ble for Melvin Jones Fellowship credit. Donors wishing to
receive Melvin Jones Fellowship credit may instead wish to
consider making a donation to the LCIF general fund. Un-
designated donations for MJFs and PMJFs make up as much
as 80 percent of the donations to the Foundation's General
Fund, which supports Standard Grants, Emergency Grants
and Major Catastrophe Grants.

Earthquake Update—eight days on
2 March 2011 - Much of Christchurch is still without water and
sewerage systems. Power has been restored to 85% of the city.
The residents of Christchurch are becoming increasingly
―fragile‖ as aftershocks continue and more than 50,000 residents
are estimated to have left the city for other parts of New Zea-
land.
The Lions have continued to provide service in spite of many of
the Lions being affected. At an emergency meeting of the Earth-
quake Committee last night I spoke to one Lion who had dam-
age to his house, his place of work was closed, he had no power,
water or sewerage connections yet was still attending a Lions
meeting to see how he could assist the citizens of Christchurch.
In the past week Lions:
Are providing 500 portable toilets to Doctors Surgery‘s,
Nurse Maud Assn. and to households in the eastern suburbs
Have joined with the Red Cross in going door to door in the
suburbs to find those who need assistance – Lions are com-
ing from neighbouring Districts to do this
Have provided weekend breaks to families to escape from
the city for 2 days
Have provided many Grocery and Fuel vouchers to families
in need
Have provided manpower to assist at welfare centres

Lions help with „Operation Suburb‟
On Monday I received a call to rapidly deploy me and five
others to Christchurch to transport emergency vehicles and a
critical shipment that needed to be hand delivered ASAP. I
have only just flown home from Christchurch yesterday.
Lions and Red Cross have invoked the MOU (Memorandum of
Understanding) signed on 27 March 2009 between our two
organisations to better assist in the recovery efforts in Christ-
church. We are currently building a data base of 100 + volun-
teers to assist with
―Operation Suburb‖ in
Christchurch. As well
we have taken an offer
of office space in the
Red Cross National HQ
in Wellington to co-
ordinate the Lions side
of ―Operation Suburb‖.
We have eight Lions
that will be operating
out of this office for 12
hours per day until further notice. We are currently working
together with Red Cross to better deliver the support Christ-
church needs at this great moment of need.
I have personally attended the briefings in Christchurch for
―Operation Suburb‖ during my brief trip there. The job that
Lions will be doing is of the utmost importance to assist the
Christchurch people. The information gathered during this op-
eration will needs assess the entire Christchurch community
and highlight what is required for humanitarian relief efforts to
assist those affected in Christchurch by the devastating earth-
quake last Tuesday. I cannot stress how important this is and
what an unbelievable opportunity this is for Lions to serve their
community during this time of need.
Also as I may have to go to Christchurch to assist further, I
have asked PDG Adrian Ash to take over the role of co-
ordinating the Lions data base for Lions wanting to self-
evacuate from Christchurch. Adrian will be accepting offers
from Lions wanting to help out with accommodation. I have
asked DG Raewyn Clearwater if she can arrange a list of Lions
that wish to leave the Christchurch area. Once we have the
names Adrian will arrange for them to be put in touch with
each other. Adrian may be contacted at: [email protected]
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you
need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Also due to the large number of citizens currently leaving the
Christchurch area. (so far the numbers I have been given are
50,000+) there has been a web site created to assist in the of-
fers of accommodation. This web site is for anyone to register
with and should not be confused with the Lions offers above. If
you would like to help a non Lion with accommodation please
register at this web address: www.quakeescape.org.nz

NATIONAL TOUR IN DISTRICT
N2. January 19 – 23, 2011
Melanie Loomes, the International Leo
of the Year was a great Ambassador
for Lions and LEOS.
The tour group were a delightful, cohe-
sive group who were hungry to know
as much as they could about what Li-
ons do.
In Canberra they were treated to a
BBQ lunch and an excellent briefing
on LEOS and how they operate in Can-
berra by the Lake Tuggeranong LEOS and Jaafar Tabandeh,
our District LEOS Chairman who had just arrived home from
visiting his mother overseas. After this they were shown Lions
Youth Haven and how the facility
assists disadvantaged youth in Can-
berra by the Farm Manager Gerry
Nussio. The LEOS also had an op-
portunity to meet socially with the
tourists during the Dinner Cruise on
Lake Burley Griffin.
A farewell BBQ for the Youth was
hosted by PCC Phil and Lion Darlene
Lawler. It was a delight to have had
them visit us and to enjoy their com-
pany. Scott Newton‘s parents (NSW
hosts) were also delighted to again
meet up with them at the Lawler‘s
home and listen to the wonderful ex-
periences they had had with our Lions
family in each state.
A few quotes:
―During the past week, I was able to
meet these Inspirational Young People
on their arrival in Sydney on 29 De-
cember 2010 and join them for Lunch
following their Bridge climb on 3
January 2011.‖
―With the support of the Lions Club of
Winmalee in District 201N4, I know
that their time in Sydney was enjoy-
able and memorable.‖
―They are ALL fine Ambassadors for
MD201 Lions Australia. Martin
Peebles, MD201 Leo & Youth Out-
reach Committee Chairman.‖
―The group had a wonderful time in
Perth. They are a cohesive group who
truly care about one another and who
all get on well. They are delightful
kids and our team here in Perth thor-
oughly enjoyed the experience.‖
Diane O‘Flaherty incoming W2 Dis-
trict Youth of the Year Coordinator.
―On Australia Day they decked out in
thick clothing with Australia boxer
shorts over their warm trousers to
climb Cradle Mountain (where) they
sang Advanced Australia Fair as loud
as they could. I only wish I could
have recorded the singing along the
way in the bus. A wonderful group
of students.‖ Jenny Tripptree, Tas-
manian State Coordinator.

Allen Cassilles was born in Cooma on 25th July 1925, he is
married to Pat, and has two children, Rodney and Kelly. He
moved to Wollongong in the late sixties.
We have known Allen
to be a most loving and
dedicated family man.
The only time Allen is
not helping the commu-
nity is to be with his
family. He spends
countless hours with his
grandchildren and loves
every minute of it.
Allen is a Charter Mem-
ber of Oak Flats Lions
for over Twenty Five
years, and he achieved
one hundred percent
attendance, a record not
many equal
During the twenty-five years Allen held every available posi-
tion offered by the Club and not only once, but two or three
times. each period served gained him the "100% Efficiency
Title". Again a rare achievement.
Allen was awarded Deputy District Governor of the large
Lions District 201 N6. This Office required him to attend
three weekly meetings for twelve months, either in the com-
pany of the District Governor, or as his representative. Such
was Allen's commitment that on one occasion when the Dis-
trict Governor's car was written off in a road accident, he
continued onto the meeting.
Other areas in which Allen has been involved in are as fol-
lows:-
Lions Mints and Christmas Cake Programme for a period of
twenty years. This involved numerous hours of collecting,
selling and meticulous accounting. Almost single-handed he
raised thousands of dollars for local charities.
Allen was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest
Lions Club Award.
As a committed helper of the Warilla RSL Sub-Branch, Al-
len spent twenty years calling Housie (bingo) twice a week
until the smoke-filled atmosphere affected his health and he
had to turn his energies elsewhere. Although not a "Returned
Soldier" , Allen was made a patron of the club in recognition
of his valuable contribution to them. For many years he drove
the bus for the elderly and maintained the bus at his own ex-
pense. Whatever the needs the club knew they would not be
disappointed by a call to Allen.
As a business man in the Shellharbour District for over
twenty years, Allen was well known and respected. Not only
for the quality of his workmanship, but also his generosity
and support of local charities, sporting bodies, and the com-
munity in general .
Allen was one of the supporters of the Life Education Pro-
gramme in the Shellharbour District.
He was co-chairman of the committee responsible for the
Oak Flats & Dapto Lions
support Sallies
Oak Flats & Dapto Loins Club had an annual Christmas Party
at the Oak Flats Community Hall, where all the presents col-
lected from members were later donated to the Salvation
Army of Shellharbour. We decided to give all the presents to
local families experiencing hardship this Christmas. Captain
Craig Spooner accepted the gifts on behalf of the Shellhar-
bour Salvation Army, which will be distributed to those in
need for Christmas.

meeting.
As of today DG Warren has visited 41 clubs 6 Lioness
Clubs and only has 25 to go. He and Lions Lady Judy have
enjoyed visiting all the clubs and DG Warren commented on
the difference between all of the clubs.
DG Warren congratulated the Nowra Club on the way they
ran the recent convention.
He had the privilege of attending the Charter of the Ambar-
vale Leos Club with 24 members now.
At the Guiding Lion workshop yesterday there was a lot of
discussion, interaction and good ideas, and if we can only do
half of what was discussed it will be of benefit to the dis-
trict. We had 11 of the 13 Zonies there and quite a few other
members there.
DG Warren acknowledged the work that Lion David
Robson has put into getting the forum going.
Membership shows a growth of 36 and indications are posi-
tive for the rest of the year.
We have been collecting money for the Pakistan Flood ap-
peal and so far we have collected $12,350.00.
Moved DG Warren, seconded PDG Steve Garratt. Carried.
7. Secretary‘s Report presented by Cabinet Secretary Peter
Howe
Response by clubs in returning their returns for the conven-
tion was slow but they did all finally come in.
L Peter has spent a lot of time liaising with club secretaries
trying to update their data base – correcting addresses and
data. The need to have the year of birth has been a problem.
The data base should reflect on what our membership is.
Newly inducted members should be put into the data base
ASAP, the same applies for deaths of members.
The district website has been added to and now you can pick
up to date information on it including membership informa-
tion.

PDG Steve Garrett - Is the council of governors going to call back
the number of meetings from 4 to 3? Yes there are only three.
This is thought to be because of the cost of accommodation and
travelling.
PCC Franz Mairinger - Could you please fill out the forms sent
out by Rob Oerleans to let LCI know if you are attending their
convention?
ANZI Forum at the Gold Coast next year will be well worth going
to and should be decided on very soon.

a number of typical household items is as follows:
Stainless steel sink [twin bowl] approx 15kgs. $15.00
Lead Acid Automotive battery $5.00
Stove [approx 60kg] $9.00
Refrigerator [approx 70kg] $10.00
Dryer [approx 30kg] $4.00
Washing machine [approx 50kg] $7.00
Aluminium cans / ring pulls [can tabs] 1kg $1.30
Please note that these are examples only, based on current
market prices in August and delivered to Sims metropolitan
depots. In addition to these items, the following items are
also recyclable –
Brass taps, copper tubing, insulated copper wire, alumin-
ium pots and pans,
steel roofing iron, hot water systems, bath tubs, old cars,
bikes, farm machinery
and so the list goes on ….but at least it gives you some idea
of what can be recycled instead of being dumped into the tips.
Those who heard Dr George Owen speak at the Nowra Con-
vention should have come away inspired to do more – here is
the opportunity! Last year N2 raised about $18,000 for the
Fellowship, a commendable effort. Let‘s try to beat that this
year.
Meanwhile progress in Spinal Cord Research continues stead-
ily with important discoveries made both here and overseas.
There has been quite a bit of press and TV coverage in the
last few months. Preliminary human trials are in hand and we
wait the news of these eagerly.

Lionsonoz Ring Pull Project helps Fellowship
Because Australian Lionsonoz is a Lions Club for wandering
Lions, members seek other ways to assist the community and
because the Lionsonoz members are mostly ―Grey Nomads‖
they have unique ways of doing this. The members of the
Australian Lionsonoz Lions Club are essentially ―Grey No-
mads‖ and Lionsonoz does not have an Activity bank ac-
count. Because they are continually on the move it is always a
challenge to find innovative ways to assist the community.
The project described below is one way they have done just
this.
A suggestion that members collect aluminium cans was con-
sidered but because of limited room in caravans and mo-
torhomes, it was decided to compromise and collect the alu-
minium ring pulls from the cans and dispose of the cans
themselves in the many Lions Can Crates which are scattered
throughout our vast country.
Not only do the Lionsonoz members collect and save the ring
pulls, but the Inverell schools and community have gone out
of their way to assist Australian Lionsonoz through Lions
Brenda and Rod Payne who have over the last school year
received thousands offing pulls..
Through working with a Lions Club in the Inverell Commu-
nity, Lion Bill Sutton of Inverell McIntyre Club found a
buyer for the ring pulls, after visiting a couple metal recycling

Spinal Cord Fellowship
New Way to Raise Funds
The exciting news for the Spinal Cord Fellowship since the
Nowra Convention, has been the setting up of a deal with Sims
Metal which allows clubs to channel sales of scrap metal directly
to the fund. Many clubs already collect ring pulls and cans and
some of the money raised goes to Spinal Cord Research. We hope
that this new initiative will encourage other Clubs to join in – it‘s
just so easy, no money to collect or disperse and the funds gener-
ated go straight to this great Lions Project.
Here are the details of the scheme extracted from the LASCF
Newsletter: (Introduction to this project in the November 2010 N2
Newsletter, Issue 2 (Internet version), ‗Collecting Projects in N2‘)
This partnership is up and running, now you will be able to recy-
cle practically all your old metal through Sims Metal Management
and the proceeds will be deposited directly into the Lions Austra-
lia Spinal Cord Fellowship account.
When you take your ring pulls or any metal into Sims, all you
need do is to quote the applicable Vendor Number (for New South
Page 14 February 2011 Edition, Issue 2 Printed by Westonprint 57 Shoalhaven Street Kiama NSW 2533
places, Lion Bill suggested that a visit to Northhaven Limited,
an organisation in Inverell that provided employment for peo-
ple with a disability, would be a distinct advantage. North-
haven already collected aluminium cans but they had not
thought of separating the ring pulls from the cans, the man-
agement saw a great opportunity in doing this and so this pro-
ject became a reality.
The opportunity available to this organisation by separating
the ring pulls from the can is that they will be able to offer
employment to at least four additional people with a disabil-
ity.
So as a by-line to collecting ring pulls Australian Lionsonoz
have been instrumental in opening a further avenue for North-
haven Limited to offer employment to people with disabilities
that they had not thought of before. Northhaven Limited in-
tends to increase their advertising for members of the Inverell
community, surrounding communities and Schools to collect
cans and ring pulls. They said that Australian Lionsonoz ex-
isting sources of ring pulls in Inverell and Ashford will re-
main and that because of Lionsonoz help they will offer In-
verell MacIntyre Lions Club a better than market price for the
ring pulls in the future.
This is a good example of Australian Lionsonoz assisting the
communities that they visit by working through an existing
Lions Club.
Lion Bill Sutton said that the last batch of Ring Pulls sold
netted $88.50 and this sum will be sent by Inverell McIntyre
Lions Club to the Lions Spinal Cord Fellowship.
Lionsonoz President Stewart Payne said that certificates of
appreciation will be presented to class 2P Ross Hill Primary
School, Holy Trinity Primary School and Ashford Primary
School for their excellent work in collecting the Ring Pulls.
He encourages Lions in other Clubs as well to save their Ring
Pulls, which can be taken to any Sims Metal Distributor. For
information regarding Sims Metal Collection Points please

Bundanoon Lions
Announce Major Project
Securing a long-awaited ambulance station for Bundanoon is
the aim of a major community service project announced re-
cently by the Lions Club of Bundanoon.
Lions Club president, Les Johnson, announced the project at
the Club‘s recent 20th anniversary dinner. ―While we have
first response provided by the local fire brigade, it is hardly a
satisfactory or sustainable arrangement,‖ said Les. He added,
―It can still take up to an hour for an ambulance to arrive.
With a growing – and ageing – population in the area, stretch-
ing from Moss Vale to Canyonleigh, this is just unacceptable.
―We are committed to the greater community and recently re-
carpeted the Bundanoon pre-school at a cost of more than
$4,000 (see photo on next page). We then considered several
possible projects, but concluded that the greatest community
need is for the ambulance station – and sooner, rather than
later‖ explained Les.
He added that Kangaroo Valley Lions had achieved a similar
feat in their village, with the construction of a combined am-
bulance station and community centre.
First step in the project will be a public meeting in Bunda-
noon during January to gauge the level of community sup-
port, not only from Bundanoon, but also from surrounding
Page 15 February 2011 Edition, Issue 2 Printed by Westonprint 57 Shoalhaven Street Kiama NSW 2533
villages.
The Bundanoon Community Association will also play a signifi-
cant role in the project, while the Bundanoon RSL sub-branch
has already indicated its support. At a meeting on December 7,
the sub-branch carried a motion pledging a financial contribution
to the project.
Lions Clubs International is the world‘s largest service organisa-
tion, with over 1.4 million members in more than 180 countries.
The first Australian Lions club was formed in 1947 in the north-
ern NSW town of Lismore. There are now more than 1400
clubs, with over 30,000 members. Formed in September 1990,
the Bundanoon Lions club received its Charter the following

On Christmas Eve, six-year-old Alex STEWART of Bundanoon
received a wheelbarrow loaded with Christmas cheer from Presi-
dent Les Johnson of the Bundanoon Lions Club (photo below).
The barrow
load of goodies,
the prize in the
Bundanoon
Lions annual
Christmas raf-
fle, included
toys, food,
Christmas gifts
and shopping
vouchers from
local traders
and was worth more than $500.
Alex had persuaded his father, Bundanoon‘s newsagent, Peter,
to buy tickets in the raffle during the week prior to Christmas.
―It was really a big week,‖ explained club president. Les JOHN-
SON, ―We started off with a Christmas barbecue for the resi-
dents of Rosnel special care hostel, then volunteers sold raffle
tickets all week until the draw which was made this year by
Wayne TODD, of Todd‘s Real Estate.‖

A sea of blue in
Bundanoon
Acting on a joint initiative of Bundanoon newsagent, Peter
Stewart and the Bundanoon Community Association, Bun-
danoon citizens rallied magnificently to a call for dona-
tions of much-needed goods to be trucked to the people of
flood ravaged Dalby in central Queensland. Donations
were accepted in the village centre from 6.00 am on Satur-
day, February 5. Within just two hours the 13-tonne truck
was fully loaded and many would-be donors had to be
turned away.
Members of Bundanoon Lions were on hand to sort and
load goods and supply sustenance to donors and volun-
teers.

From the members of the Lions Club of Bowning & Districts,
congratulations Lion Jim for a job well done.
Comprising of dynamic and intricate paintings, artefacts, and
ceramics and floating silk panels, the exhibition provided the
hundreds of viewers with a chance to purchase or simply ad-
mire the art from a distant part of Australia. A unique feature
of the exhibition was artist Gavin Delacour‘s paintings of
your own personal genealogy, which he paints individually to
suit your family.
Some of the artists showing their work have already sold
overseas in Europe, America and India and throughout Aus-
tralia and they have also won awards and scholarships for
further studies through Arts Queensland.
The 5 artists who travelled the 2300kms to be in the art exhi-
bition, were
over-
whelmed by
the local‘s
genuine
interest, and
like mem-
bers of the
Bowning &
District Li-
ons Club
were truly
amazed at
the sales. It
was more
than the
Bowning &
District Li-
ons Club
could ever
have hoped
for, with
two of the
artists hav-
ing 100 per cent sales record and each of the others selling at
least four paintings.
From the exhibition, there were 3 amazing outcomes: Firstly
the Chisholm Street Gallery in Ainslie, who specialise in tex-
tile and weaving, offered artists Lee Anne Shaw who does the
silk hangings and Shirley McNamara who makes the Spinifex
baskets their own private showings in 2011. Then there was
the Aboriginal Dreamtime Gallery at Gold Creek village who
said they were looking for an exhibition either at Canberra
Festival or Floriade in 2011 and also finally the National Mu-
seum of Australia who said they would be interested in the
artists doing an exhibition sometime in the future.
This Art Exhi-
bition would
not have been
the great suc-
cess that it was
without all the
hard work of a
relative new

Ready to play
Bowning & District Lions construct playground equipment.
It‘s ready to play at Horton House & Gwen Warmington
Lodge age care facility in Yass. In late October, 2010 Bown-
ing & District Lions Club saw the completion of a two-year
long special project when their playground equipment was
installed following a significant period of fundraising.
Project co-ordinator, Lion Graham Wilson said that the Club
raised $12,500 and received a state government grant of
$5,000 to acquire the brightly coloured playground, which is
ideally situated within the garden area of Horton House &
Gwen Warmington Lodge.
The purpose of the playground equipment was to give families
with children visiting residents a place to gather and enjoy one
another‘s
company and
hopefully
other resi-
dents would
have the
pleasure of
watching the
young peo-
ple frolic on
the monkey
bars and
slippery dip.
Lion Graham said that he hoped the playground equipment
would encourage more families with young children to visit
their loved and the Club agreed that the construction of the
playground equipment was a valuable project and they hoped
it would benefit residents as well as visitors alike.
The Manager of Horton House & Gwen Warmington Lodge,
Penny Temple who is also a member of the Bowning & Dis-
tricts Lions Club said that quite a few of the residents have
grandchildren and great –grandchildren and having this play-
ground facility hopefully would encourage younger kids to
come and visit.
The Bowning & District Lions Club raised most of the money
through local projects such as Dancing with our stars, street
stalls and raffles and thanks the Yass community for their sup-
port.
