IntroductionIntroduction

• The Deep Blue Sea-The Behemoth Unstable Sea, The deep with all its mysteries.

• What is the Sea? It is a mammoth mass of water that covers a sizeable portion of the planet’s surface- in fact 70% of the planet’s surface!

• The mass of water that covers the earth at times are called the oceans. It is very interesting to note that the mass of waters are subdivided into several categories which most times are used interchangeably.

• The Ocean is a larger expanse of water than the sea. Seas are subsets of Oceans and are much more saline.

OCEANSOCEANS

• There are 5 major Oceans in the World namely:

• Atlantic Ocean• Arctic Ocean• Antarctic Ocean• Indian Ocean• Pacific Ocean

Page 4: THE RAGING DEEP BLUE SEA

• It is important to note that these oceans have several seas within their domain.

• The Atlantic Ocean has 41 different seas within it. This includes Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Black Sea, North Sea, and Caribbean Sea. The following slides gives some few examples of seas within the oceans

• Arafura Sea • Banda Sea • Bering Sea • Bismarck Sea • Bohai Sea • Bohol Sea (also known as the Mindanao Sea) • Camotes Sea • Celebes Sea etc

• However, among these seas, the most popular ones are: Sea of Galilee, Adriatic Sea, Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Aegean Sea, Dead Sea, Caspian Sea, Black Sea, and Mediterranean Sea.

Oceans play a very important role in the climate of the world. They carry quite an enormous amount of heat which affects the temperature of the prevailing wind in contact with Ocean current.

CREATURES OF THE CREATURES OF THE BEHEAMOTH SEABEHEAMOTH SEA

• The sea is known to contain very large amount & species of animals. In fact, it is known to contain the largest array of species. There are also different plant species. The estimate amount of species are about 20,000.There are well over 14,500 different types of algae species in the oceans

Page 12: THE RAGING DEEP BLUE SEA

• These organisms dwell at almost every depth of water. The types of living creatures at these depths are being affected by three major factors-Temperature, Salinity & Depth.

• All sea animals are divided into 2 broad categories:

Page 13: THE RAGING DEEP BLUE SEA

• The NEKTON- Animals that are streamlined and can move from one place to another. They also have a means of floatation. Among these are Sharks, skates, dolphins, fishes, sea turtles, penguins & seals.

• THE BENTHOS- These are organisms living at the bottom of the ocean. Among these are corals, spongies, ascidians, mollusks or may be crawling like sea-stars, sea-urchins, crabs, mollusks which crawl at the sea bottom or may be free swimming in the lowermost layers of the water (fishes, cuttlefishes, squids). Some of these organisms use filter mechanism for feeding

Box jellyfishBox jellyfish

• Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) are found mostly in the warm waters north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Their Stings are potentially fatal.

• Stonefish stings are potentially fatal. It is important to see medical help immediately from a stonefish sting. Antivenom can be available to treat the venom.

CONE SHELLCONE SHELL

•  The cone shell has a small "harpoon" that can penetrate the skin and cause envenomation. The venom can very quickly cause life-threatening paralysis. For first aid , pressure-immobilization technique should be used & the patient taken immediately to the emergency department of the nearest hospital.

Blue-ringed octopusBlue-ringed octopus

• Blue-ringed octopus can be found in rock pools, and bites can occur when people touch them or stand on them. The octopus shows their blue markings only when disturbed. Bites from a blue-ringed octopus are potentially fatal. For suspected blue-ringed octopus bites, use the pressure-immobilisation technique, & the patient taken immediately to the emergency department of the nearest hospital.

VIPER FISHVIPER FISH• Viper fish (Mesopelagic - found at 80-1600 meters -

about a mile down) are some of the most wicked looking fish dredged up from the depths. Some of them are black as night all over with light organs (called photophores) in strategic places on their bodies, including one on a long dorsal fin that serves as a lure for the fish it preys upon. Some viperfish (and many other deep ocean fish species) don't have any pigment (color) at all - they're "see through". They also have enlarged eyes, presumably for gathering as much light as possible where there is little or no light at all. The light organs create lights by using a chemical process called bioluminescence.

SEA WASPSEA WASP

Page 25: THE RAGING DEEP BLUE SEA

• Sea Wasps, or box jellies, are not aggressive. They don't have to be. For jellyfish, they are pretty fast swimmers (up to 5mph), dangling their long tentacles in the surf behind them until something, usually a fish, gets caught in their practically invisible tentacles. That's where all their nematocysts (stinging capsules contained within cells called cnidocytes located along the tentacles) are located.
