Global Environmental Overview.Kenya does not exist in isolation from the rest ofthe world and having knowledge about worldenvironmental problems can help to identify futurerisks to Kenya. It is important to look at the world’senvironmental problems and understand thenegative effects on our environs.

Climate change.The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)produces carbon dioxide. This traps heat in theatmosphere causing the earth’s temperature toincrease, polar ice caps start to melt and the sealevel rises. This results in an increased risk offlooding and increasing temperatures which havenegative effects for agriculture in parts of the Africacontinent and the world.

Air pollution.Poisonous fumes from industries and vehicles cancause respiratory problems to people. The fumescan dissolve in rainwater forming acid rain, whichdamages plants and buildings. Many cities haveproblems with smoke where the pollution hangsover the city like low-lying clouds or mist thatreduces visibility and causes health problems.

Water pollution.Industry waste, sewage and chemical fertilizerwaste from farmers can enter streams, rivers andoceans polluting the world’s water sources andcausing harm to plants, animals and human health.

Decreasing biodiversity.Biodiversity means the total variety of all differentplants and animal species.Pollution and deforestation decreases the numberof living species with over 100 species becomeextinct each day. This reduces resources used formaterials energy and medicine.

Desertification.When land loses all vegetation and the soil becomesdry and blows or washes away, land becomes lessproductive. This is also known as the ‘spread ofdeserts’ turning fields and pastures into barrenwastelands encompassing many hectares of landareas, which are potentially at risk.

Hazardous WasteToxic and poisonous waste can come from factoriesusing chemical or radioactive materials. The waste

harms all ecosystems through disasters such as whena Union Carbide pesticide factory leaked chemicalsin Bhopal, India, causing the factory to explode.

Acid Rain.Already mentioned the under air pollution, acidrain destroys forests and lakes especially in Europeand North America. When pollution dissolves inwater it makes the rain acidic. Trees, plants, fishand even buildings are all affected.

Ozone Depletion.Certain chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons(CFC’s) are used in products for refrigeration andother industrial processes, but are now found todestroy the ozone layer. The Ozone layer protectsthe earth from harmful sunrays known as ultra-violet rays (UV). When the chemicals destroy theozone layer, increased levels of UV rays can reachthe earth’s surface and are harmful to human healthcausing skin cancer and other illnesses.

Urban Problems.Many towns and cities suffer from litter, air pollution,noise pollution, congestion and decreasing areasof countryside.

Resource Depression.Increased energy and material requirementsthroughout the world are causing natural resourceslike oil, coal, minerals and forests to becomedepleted. This encourages competition forresources causing increased international conflict.Finding more resources for energy requirementswill soon become a big problem unless alternativesources of energy are used like water, wind ornuclear energy instead of using finite resources ofoil, coal and gas.

Trainers, ask the cluster participants thesequestions:Does Kenya suffer the bad effect of some of theseproblems?Does Kenya contribute toward or cause any ofthese problems?As Kenya develops, which global environmentalproblems do you think will become worse?

Encourage your TIST clusters and other communitymembers to plant more trees to minimize some ofthese climatically bad effects so our environmentcan be better!

Sustainable Development.

3ENGLISH VERSION

Deforestation is the removal of trees and otherwoody vegetation cover.Forests and woodlands cover about a third of theworld’s land surface. They regulate climate, protectwater resources, provide forest products (e.g.timber, medicine, fruit etc) worth billions of dollarsand support millions of plant and animal species.Yet they are being destroyed at a rate of 20 millionhectares per year. Half of the world’s populationdepends on these forests for fuel, yet roughly 100million people do not have enough fuel for minimalenergy requirements.

Major causes of deforestation:Deforestation occurs when vegetation is

cleared for activities like farming or grazing anduses such as: firewood, brick-making, fish smoking,tobacco-curing, tea-drying, construction, and timber.

Forest degradation is when a forest becomesless diverse and resilient due to poor use andmanagement (for example, when old trees are allcut, leaving mainly brush, or when a useful plantspecies is all harvested, or when forest is heavilygrazed, so that trees can’t grow to replace thosethat die).

Much of deforestation and forest landdegradation results from a lack of awareness of thefull value of trees.

In some cases, the value of trees may be knownbut poverty and the idea that there are no goodalternatives lead people to clear trees.

Consequences of Deforestation.

Soil erosion: Lack of tree cover and root bindingexposes soil to erosion.

Lack of forest resources: Removing trees

destroys habitats, reduces biodiversity, removesfood and medicinal resources, and increasescompetition for construction materials. People willhave to walk further for firewood, and if forestproducts are being bought, prices will rise.

Lack of other environmental benefits oftrees:Trees act as a windbreak, retain moisture, addoxygen to the air, and add nutrients to soil. Hencewithout trees the local climate will become drierwith increased risk of flooding, wind erosion,decreasing soil fertility and diminished air quality.

What can we do to prevent deforestationand forest degradation?• Establish tree nurseries of diverse and

indigenous trees and plant them yourself, ordistribute or sell seedlings to the community.

• Use energy-saving cook stoves that use lessfirewood and charcoal.

• Use alternative sources of energy and fuel whenpossible (e.g. heating from the sun, sawdust,coffee and risk husks, grass, weeds, crop wastes,animal waste).

• Carry out tree planting activities. Become asuccessful, effective TIST group! Encourage yourneighbors and friends to join TIST as well.

• Do not cultivate land bordering a river orswamp. Leave trees and vegetation to grow toprotect these waters.

• Be careful to not over-graze land. Limit animals’access to tree seedlings that they may destroy,to give the forest a chance to re grow.

• Encourage agro-forestry or the use of woodlots.Having trees on your land provides good accessto forest products and helps protect nearbyforest.

Deforestation and forest land degradation areserious problems. What can we do?

Sound Environmental Management is not only themaintenance and enhancement of wildlife andhabitats, but also the management of soil, air, andwater. The positive management of these factorsleads to better use of resources with a reductionin waste and lessens the risk of pollution. Allreasonable pro-active efforts should be made toconserve the environment.

Biological diversity is fundamental toagriculture and food production.

Members should understand and assess theimpact their growing activity has on theenvironment, and consider how they can enhancethe environment for the benefit of the localcommunity, flora and fauna.

It is strongly recommended that each memberhave a plan for the management of wildlife and

conservation of environment on their ownproperty compatible with sustainable agriculturalproduction and minimize environmental impact. Akey aim should be the enhancement ofenvironmental biodiversity on the farm throughpositive conservation management.

Key elements:~ Conduct a baseline audit to understand

existing animal and plant diversity on the farm.

~ Take action to avoid damage and deteriorationof habitats

~ Create an action plan to enhance habitats andincrease biodiversity on the farm.

Environment and Conservation.

4ENGLISH VERSION

TIST groups do a lot of practical activities:Planting trees and improving agriculturaltechniques. When there is a lot of work to

be done, it is good to create action steps. Eachgroup member should tell the group what they aregoing to achieve that week. We are going to teachyou and your Small Group how to do actionplanning. Please share this with other members ofyour Small Group during your meeting.

An action step is something that is:• Specific• Observable (a fly on the wall can see you do it!)• Measurable• Has a beginning and an end• Make sure your action step is realistic and that

you can achieve it!

For example, saying ‘I will plant trees’ is not anaction step because it is too general. ‘I will workon three mornings this week to transplant 75seedlings into our new grove’ is an action stepbecause it is specific (transplant 75 seedlings),observable (people can see you do it), measurable(75 seedlings, 3 mornings) and has a beginningand an end (at the end of three days you can seethe results).

When your group meets again, allow ten minutesnear the end of the small group meeting for eachperson to report on his or her action step. Eachperson quickly:

(1) Tells the group what their action stepwas for the past week.

(2) States what they actually did.

(3) States what action step they will takefor the following week.

If the person succeeded in his or her actionstep, the group celebrates the success.

If, as often happens to start with, the groupmember met only part of his goal, the groupencourages him / her and does not criticize orblame. When people are able to freely share theirsuccesses and failures they will be encouraged to

do better each week.Encourage your Small Groupmembers to think of possible action steps. Makesure each is specific, measurable and realistic! Shareand celebrate the action steps that your SmallGroup has accomplished.

Action Steps for Action Planning.A similar method can be used when planning. Herean example is given in brackets. When your groupis planning what to do, make sure your plans are:

Specific (Our TIST Small Group will plant 1000trees at the local hospital by November 30)

Measurable (How many? - 1000 trees will beplanted)

Achievable/Realistic (Our TIST Small Group canplant 1000 trees in 5wks – 100 trees per Tuesdayand Thursday, 10 trees per person/per day)

Time-bound (Has a beginning and an end - wewill plant the trees between Oct 15 to Nov 30)

Observable (A fly on the wall can see us planting)SMARTO!This is the guide and test of your action steps foryour plan and helps you be specific:

1) What – (Planting 1000 trees)

2) Who – (TIST Small Group members by name)

3) When – (Oct 15 – Nov 30)

4) Where – (At the hospital)

5) How – (We meet every Tuesday and Thursdayafternoon after the heat of the day and digholes, then plant the trees)

6) Why – (To improve the area around thehospital, have more shade for patients andvisitors, people can sit under trees and theshade will make the hospital cooler)

Now, try to practice action planning in your nextSmall Group meeting.

Small Group Best Practices: Action Steps andAction Planning.

5ENGLISH VERSION

Weeding is important for these reasons:

1. Your crops need water, soil nutrients and lightto grow strong. If there are weeds they willcompete with your crops for these things. Theweeds will use the soil nutrients and waterthat your crops need. The result is that yourcrops will be weaker and may not survive.

2. If your area is not weeded, more pests may beattracted to the area. Pests can damage andkill your crops. The fewer weeds there are,the less chance there will be of snakes andinsects.

Here are some of the advantages of weeding yourfields:• Crops grow faster because weeds don’t take

the nutrients and water from the soil.

• Crops will become stronger and grow tallerin a shorter period of time.

• Crops can get the sunlight they needunhindered.

• Crops are not exposed to as many diseases.

• Crops are more protected from a firespreading.

• Clean fields indicate that small groups aremaintaining them and are good examples ofthe TIST program. This will attract many peopleto come and see your work.

Once you have weeded the area, make sure youremove the weeds from the field. If you leave thedead weeds by the crops they may still attract pestsand diseases that can damage your crop. You maybe able to use weeds in compost manure since theheat from decomposition can kills weed seeds andsome diseases.

Remember to keep weeding your tree groves too!

We are grateful for the good rains this season, butlet’s remember to weed our crops.

Kujengana is a very important part of yourSmall Group weekly meeting. It says inEphesians 4:15,16 that we are to build each

other up into the fullness of Christ. Each person inyour TIST Small Group brings his or her own specialtalents and gifts to the entire group. One of thewonderful things that happen in the Small Group isrecognizing, sharing and using those God-giventalents.

Kujengana is a way to let those talents be seenand be used. There are two parts to Kujengana:• Before the closing prayer, every person in the

group says one specific, positive thing thatthe leader did at that meeting. For example,smiled, kept to time, made good plans,encouraged all group members to speak, greetedme and made me feel welcome, pointed outsomething that was going very well in themeeting or in the work the group was doing,etc. Each member needs to say somethingdifferent. This is not optional. Everyone givesKujengana to the servant leader. Some groupsalso give Kujengana to the co-leader.

• In addition, if someone sees a gift shown by theleader, a group member can also say that.

With Rotating Leadership, each week a new

leader will receive Kujengana. Through Kujengana,we encourage each other on the good things thatweek’s leader did in the meeting and the talentsthe person showed.

Kujengana is also the way we learn to lookfor positive things about people and then say them.We all need to train our tongues to say the positive.In addition, the whole group learns what that groupthinks is important in a servant leader. The nextleaders will benefit from what they have heard inKujengana about previous leaders and know whatthe groups think is important in being a servantleader.

In response to Kujengana, that week’s servantleader just says, “Thank you.” after each groupmember’s specific, positive statement. There is nodiscussion about how it could have been donebetter, or differently. Often, the person is happywhen he or she is told the good things he or shedid during the meeting. Sometimes we learn thingsabout ourselves we didn’t know!

Kujengana helps the leader on that dayrecognize his or her talents and keep on using them.Kujengana also helps the Small Group because allthe members improve their servant leadership asthey learn. Kujengana is a double blessing!

6ENGLISH VERSION

Preparing seedlings for transplanting(Hardening Off)

Now that rains have come, seedlings need tobe planted out. It is important this month to make surethat seedlings will be ready to be moved from thenursery and planted in the field.

Seedlings first need to be prepared for theharsher conditions of the field. If seedlings have beenproperly looked after in a nursery, they may havereceived more water and shade than they will haveonce they have been planted. Gradually reduce thewatering and expose the seedlings to full sunlight tomake this transition successful.

Characteristics of good seedlings.As a general guide (remembering different species havedifferent characteristics) good seedlings for plantingout have the following characteristics:• The shoot should be twice the length of the roots

or the pot.• The stem should be strong and woody.• The seedlings should have many thin roots in

addition to the main roots.• Many seedlings will achieve these characteristics

two months after germinating.

Transplanting.• Transport the seedlings in an upright position• Mark out a circle with a diameter of 30cm in the

field• Remove the topsoil and place in a pile• Remove the next soil layer to a depth of 30cm

and place in a separate pile• Put in a 5cm layer of grass (dry grass in rainy

season, fresh grass in dry season), (called mulching).Some groups add manure as well.

• Remove the seedling from the polythene bag. Donot break the earth-balls around the roots.

• Place the seedling in the hole• Replace the topsoil first, then the second soil layer.• Some groups do not fill the hole completely, but

leave a gap of a few cm. This helps the rainwaterenter the hole and infiltrate the soil. This can beespecially helpful in dry areas.

• Any remaining soil can be placed in a mound onthe downhill side of the seedling. This will helptrap any rainwater and divert it into the hole.

• Water the seedling.

Also remember that to give your seedling the

best chance of survival you should plant the 3m - 4mapart. If you plant them closer together then theseedlings will not get all the water and soil nutrientsthey need because there is much competition. Theywill become weak and may die, so follow the bestpractice of a spacing of 2.5 - 3m.

The Importance of Trees.Trees are very important for environmental andmaterial reasons:

A. Environmental improvement:••••• Trees cover soil, which protects it from wind and

water erosion.••••• Leaves and twigs fall to the ground and provide

the soil with extra nutrients.••••• Trees increase soil moisture by covering the soil

and hence reducing evaporation.••••• Tree roots help bind the soil and therefore reduce

erosion.••••• Tree roots also help water to enter the soil and

hence improve underground water circulation.••••• Trees improve local weather conditions by

increasing the amount of water vapor in the air(increased humidity).

••••• Trees improve air quality by absorbing carbondioxide and releasing oxygen.

••••• Trees provide shade and shelter.

B. Material and nutritional value:••••• Construction materials (furniture, posts, fences,

rope etc.)••••• Fuel wood

••••• Medicine••••• Food/fodder

These benefits are really valuable for farmersand for the world. A recent survey of TIST farmers inKenya showed that the value of fruits, nuts, fodder, andfirewood from trees they have planted in TIST andimproved yield from using Conservation Farmingaveraged almost 37,000 shillings per farmer. It’s harderto put a value on the benefits of cooler, moister soil,cleaner air and some of the other benefits of the workwe do in TIST, but we feel it on our farms every day.

Promoting tree planting is hence of greatimportance to the community.Imagine what we can do when we plant moretogether!

Kuangalia mazingira ya dunia kwa ufupi.

Kenya haijatengwa kutokana na sehemu zingine zadunia na kuwa na ujuzi kuhusu matatatizo yakimazingira ya dunia nzima kwaweza kusaidiakutambua hatari kwa Kenya kwa umbali. Ni muhimukuchambua matatatizo ya dunia ya kimazingira nakuelewa madhara hasi yanayoweza kufikiamazingira yetu.

Madaliko ya hali ya anga ya muda mrefu.Kuchoma ngataa au mafuta ( makaa yam awe,mafuta, gesi asilia) hutoa hewa chafu ya kaboni. Hiihewa hutega joto katika anga na kusabasisha jotoduniani kuongezeka, kofia za barafu katika maeneoya milima kuanza kuyeyuka na kiwango cha majikatika maziwa kupanda. Haya husababishauwezekano wa mafuriko na joto kupanda jamboambalo huwa na athari mbaya kwa kilimo katikasehemu za bara la Afrika na dunia nzima.

Uchafuzi wa hewa.Mafusho yenye sumu kutoka viwandani na kwamagari yaweza kusababisha shida za kupumua kwawatu. Mafusho haya yaweza kuingia katika maji yamvua na kutengeneza mvua wenye asidi, ambaohudhuru mimea na mijengo. Miji mingi huwa namatatizo ya moshi ambapo machafuko hutanda juuya miji kama mawingu ya chini na kupunguza uwezowa kuona mbali na kusababisha shida za kiafya.

Uchafuzi wa maji.Maji na uchafu kutoka viwandani na kemikali kutokakwa wakulima zaweza kuingia katika vijito, mitona maziwa na kuchafua vyanzo vya maji vya dunianzima na kudhuru mimea, wanyama na afya yabinadamu.

Kupunguza bionuwai.Baonuwai ni wingi wa aina mbalimbali za mimeana wanyama. Uchafuzi na kukata miti hupunguzanambari ya viumbe hai na kumaliza zaidi ya ainamia moja kila siku. Jambo hili hupunguza rasilimaliinayotumika kama vifaa, nishati na dawa.

Kuenea kwa jangwa.Ardhi inapopoteza mimea na udongo unapokaukana kubebwa, ardhi hukuwa na uzalishaji uliopungua.Hili pia linajulikana kama ‘kuenea kwa jangwa’ nahugeuza mashamba na mahali pa kulisha wanyamakuwa ardhi isiyona uzalishaji iliyo hectare nyingi,zilizona uwezekano wa kupotezwa.

Uchafu wenye madhara.Uchafu wenye sumu unaotoka kwa viwandavinavyotumia kemikali na mionzi. Taka hii hudhurumazingira yote kupitia majanga kama kiwanda chachama cha kutengeneza dawa ya magugu kilipovujakemikali huko Bhopal, India, kiwanda kililipuka.

Kupungua kwa safu ya ozoni.Baadhi ya kemikali kama chlorofluorocarbons(CFC’s) hutumiwa katika vitu vinavyotumika katikamajokofu na katika taratibu nyinginezo za viwandanilakini sasa zinaonekana kudhuru safu ya ozone. Safuya ozone hulinda ardhi kutokana miale hatari yajua inayoitwa ultra-violet rays (UV). Kemikalizinapoharibu safu ya ozone, kuongezeka kwa mialeya UV hufika ardhini na kudhuru afya ya binadamuhuku ikileta kansa ya ngozi na magonjwamengineyo.

Matatizo mijini.Miji mingi hukabiliwa na shida za taka, uchafuzi wahewa, kelele, msongamano na kupungua kwamaeneo yakuishi.

Kupungua kwa rasilimali.Ongezeko la mahitaji ya nishati na rasilimali katikadunia nzima linasababisha rasilimali ya kiasilia kamamafuta, makaa ya mawe, madini na misitu kuisha.Jambo hili linaongeza ushindani wa rasilimali jamboambali linaleta migogoro ya kimataifa. Kutafutarasilimalizaidi ili kutimiza mahitaji kutakuwa shidakubwa hivi karibuni isipokuwa vyanzo vya nishatibadala vvitumike kama maji, upepo au nishati yanyuklia badala ya rasilimali inayopimika kamamafuta, makaa ya mawe au gesi ya kiasilia.

Hata hivyo miti hiiinaharibiwa kwa haraka sana, hectare milioni ishirinikila mwaka. Nusu ya watu wote katika dunia nzimahutegemea msitu kupata ngataa, hata hivyo watutakribani milioni mia moja hawana ngataa toshakutimiza mahitaji yao ya kila siku.

Sababu kubwa za ukataji wa misitu:Ukataji wa miti hufanyika wakati mimea

inakatwa kabisa ili kuruhusu shughuli zingine kamakilimo, malisho na matumizi kama: kuni,kutengeneza matofali, kukausha samaki, kuponyatumbaku, kukausha majani chai, kujenga na mbao.

Uharibifu wa msitu ni wakati msitu unakua naaina za mimea na wanyama chache na uwezo wakewa kuzalisha unapungua kwa sababu ya utumizi nausimamizi mbaya ( mfano, miti yote mizee ikikatwana miti mifupi tu kuachwa, ama mimea yote ya ainamuhimu ikikatwa, ama msitu ukilishwa sana, hadimiti inashindwa kukua ili kuisimamia iliyokufa)

Ukataji miti na uharibifu wa misitu mwingihutokana na kukosa ujuzi kuhusu thamani kamiliya miti.

Wakati mwingine, thamani ya miti inajulikanalakini umaskini na fikira ya kuwa hakuna njia badalahuongoza watu kukata miti.

Yanayotokana na ukataji wa misitu.Mmomonyoko wa udongo: ukosefu wa kizuizina mizizi ya kushika udongo hufungulia udongommomonyoko wa udongo.

Ukosefu wa rasilimali za msitu: Kung’oa mitihuharibu makazi, hupunguza bionuwai, hutoa

rasilimali za chakula na dawa, huongeza mashindanoya kupata vifaa vya kujenga. Watu watahitajikakutembea mbali zaidi kupata kuni na iwapo mazaoya misitu yanauzwa, bei zitapanda.

Ukosefu wa faida zingine za kimazingira zamiti: Miti hupunguza upepo, huweka unyevu mudamrefu, huongeza oksijeni hewani, na huongezavirutubisho udongoni. Kwa hivyo bila miti hali yahewa itakuwa kame zaidi na uwezekano wamafuriko kuongezeka, mmomonyoko wa udongo,kupungua kwa rutuba ya udongo na kupungua kwaubora wa hewa.

Twaweza kufanya nini ili kuepuka ukataji wamiti na uharibifu wa misitu?• Anzisha minanda ya miti yenye miti mbalimbali

na ya kiasili na huipande mwenyewe, auhutambaze au huuze miche kwa jamii.

• Tumia meko ya kuokoa nishati kama yanayotumiakuni au makaa chache.

• Tumia vyanzo badala vya nishati na ngataainapowezekana ( kwa mfano, pasha joto na jua,mavumbi ya mbao, maganda ya kahawa namchele, Nyasi, magugu, mabaki ya mimea, kinyesicha wanyama)

• Fanya shughuli za kupanda miti. Kuweni kikundicha TIST chenye mafanikio na kinachofanyakazi!Encourage your neighbors and friends tojoin TIST as well.

• Usilime ardhi yanayokaribiana na mto au bwawa.Iache miti na mimea kukua ili kulinda maji.

• Chunga usilishe zaidi ya inavyofaa. Punguzauwezo wa wanyama kufikia miche kwaniwanaweza kuiharibu, ili kuupa msitu nafasi yakukua tena.

• Hamasisha kilimo-mseto ama kutumia mitiinayokua kidogo. Kuwa na miti katika ardhi yakohukupa uwezo wa kufikia mazao ya misitu nahusaidia kulinda msitu ulio karibu.

Usimamizi mwafaka wa mazingira hauhusu tukuchunga na kuimarisha wanyamapori na makaoyao, bali pia usimamizi wa udongo, hewa na maji.Usimamizi mzuri wa chanya hizi hufuatwa nautumizi mzuri zaidi wa rasilimali na upunguzaji wataka na uwezekano wa uchafuzi pia kupungua.Juhudi zote zenye busara zafaa kufanywa zikilengakuhifadhi mazingira.

Bionuwai ya kibaolojia ni muhimu sana kwakilimo na uzalishaji wa chakula.

Memba wanafaa kuelewa na kutathmini athariza shughuli wanazokuza kwa mazingira na kufikiriawanavyoweza kuboresha mazingira ili kufaidi jamii,mimea na wanyama.

Pendekezo kali ni kila memba kuwa na mpangowa kusimamia wanyama pori na kuhifadhi mazingirakatika mashamba yao na uzalishaji wa kilimo ulioendelevu na kupunguza athari za kimazingira. Lengomuhimu ni kukuza bionuwai ya kimazingira katikashamba kupitia usimamizi wa kuhifadhi.

wanyama na mimea uliopo katika shamba hilo.~ Chukua hatua ili kuepuka uharibifu na uchakaji

wa makazi.~ Tengeneza mpango wa utekelezaji wa kukuza

makazi na kuongeza bionuwai katika shamba.

Vikundi vingi vya TIST hufanya kazi nyingizinazoonekana: kupanda miti na kuboreshambinu za ukulima. Wakati kuna kazi nyingi

inayohitaji kufanyika, ni vizuri kufanya mpango wahatua zitakazochukuliwa. Kila mwanakikundi afaakuambia kikundi ni kitu gani wataweza kufanyakatika wiki hiyo. Tutawafunza nyinyi na kikundichenu jinsi ya kufanya mpango wa hatuazitakachochukulia kufanya kazi hiyo. Tafadhaligawana haya na wanakikundi wengine wakati wamkutano.

Hatua ya Utekelezaji ni iliyo:• Maalum• Inayoonekana (Nzi iliyo ukutani yaweza

kukuona ukifanya!)• Inayopimika• Iliyo na mwanzo na mwisho• Hakikisha hatua yako ya utekelezaji ni

itakayowezekana na unayoweza kufikia!Kwa mfano, kusema ‘Nitapanda miti’ si hatua yaUtekelezaji kwa sababu ni taarifa ya ujumla.‘Nitafanya kazi asubuhi tatu wiki hii kupandikizamiche sabini na tano shambani letu jipya’ ni hatuaya utekelezaji kwa sababu ni iliyo maalum(kupandikiza miche sabini na tano),inayoonekana(watu waweza kukuona ukifanya),inayopimika (miche sabini na tano, asubuhi tatu)na ina mwanzo na mwisho(mwishoni mwa sikutatu utaona matokeo).

Kikundi chako kitakapokutana tena, ruhusu dakikatano mwishoni mwa mkutano ili kila mtu aripotikuhusu hatua yake mwenyewe ya utkelezaji. Kilamtu haraka: (1) Aambie kikundi hatua yake ya

utekelezaji ya wiki iliyopita.(2) Aseme ni nini chenyewe alichofanya.(3) Aseme hatua yake ya utekelezaji ya wiki

inayofuata.

Kama huyo mtu alifanikiwa katika hatua yake yautekelezaji, kikundi kinasherehekea fanikio hilo.Ikiwa, kama mara mengi inavyotokea,mwanakikundi ameweza kufanikiwa kufikiakiwango fulani cha lengo lake, kikundi kimtie nguvuna kisimkosoe au kumtia lawama. Watu

wanapoweza kugawana bila hofu kuhusu mafanikiona kutofaulu kwao, watahimizwa kufanya vyemazaidi wiki inayofuatilia. Himiza wana kikundi chakokufikiria hatua za utekelezaji zinazowezekana.Hakikisha kila mojawapo ni maalum, inapimika nainawezekana! Gawana na msherehekee hatua zautekelezaji kikundi chako kilichotimiza.

Hatua za utekelezaji unapofanya hatua zamipangoNjia sawa yaweza kutumiwa unapopangia kitu. Hapani mfano katika mabano. Wakati kikundi chakokinapopanga kitakavyofanya, hakikisha mipangoyenu ni:Specific- Maalum (Kikundi chetu cha TISTkitapanda miti elfu moja katika hospitali mtaanikabla ya tarehe thelathini, Novemba)Measurable-Inapimika (Ngapi? - Miti elfu mojaitapandwa)Achievable/Realistic –Inayoweza kufikiwa(Kikundi chetu cha TIST chaweza kupanda miti elfumoja katika muda wa wiki tano- miti mia moja kilajumanne na alhamisi, miti kumi kwa kila mmoja kilakila siku)Time-bound- Inapimiwa muda (Ina mwanzo namwisho- tutapanda miti kati ya tarehe kumi natano, Octoba hadi tarehe thelathini Novemba)Observable- Inaonekana (Nzi ukutani yawezakutuona tukipanda miti. )SMARTO!

Huu ni mwongozo na kipimo cha hatua zako zautekelezaji na unakusaidia kuwa maalum:1) Nini – (Kupanda miti elfu moja)2) Nani – (Wana Kikundi kidogo cha TIST kwa

jina)3) Lini – (Oct 15 – Nov 30)4) Wapi– (Hospitalini)5) Aje – (Tutakutana kila Jumanne na Alhamisi

alasiri baada ya joto la siku na kuchimbamashimo, halafu tupande miti)

6) Kwa nini– (Kuboresha eneo linalozungukahospitali, tuwe na kivuli zaidi kwa wagonjwana wageni, watu waweze kukaa chini ya mitina kivuli kitafanya hospitali iwe baridi zaidi. )+

Sasa, jaribu kujizoesha kufanya hatua za mipangokatika mkutano wako wa kikundi kidogo ujao.

Kujengana ni sehemu muhimu sana ya mkutanowa kila wiki wa kikundi chako. Inasema katikaAefeso 4:15,16 kuwa tujengane hadi tuwe na

utimilifu wa Kristu. Kila mtu katika Kikundi chako chaTIST huleta talanta na zawadi zake maalum kikundini.Moja ya vitu vya kuajabisha inayotokea katika kikundikidogo ni kujua, kugawana na kutumia talanta hizoulizopewa na Mungu.

Kujengana ni njia moja ya kufanya hizo talantakuonekana na kutumika. Kuna sehemu mbili zaKujengana:• Kabla ya ombi la kufunga, kila mtu katika kikundi

aseme kitu kizuri maalum ambacho kiongoziamefanya katika mkutano huo. Kwa mfano,alitabasamu, aliweka masaa, alifanya mipangomizuri, aliwatia nguvu wanakikundi wote kuongea,alinisalimu na alinifanya nijisikie nimekaribishwa,alisema kitu kilichokuwa kinaendelea vizuri katikamkutano ama katika kazi iliyokuwa ikifanywa nakikundi, na kadhalika. Kila mwanakikundianahitajika kusema kitu tofauti. Hili si lakujichagulia. Kila mtu ajenge kiongozi wa utumishi.Vikundi vingine hujenga hata msaidizi wa kiongozi.

• Kuongezea, ikiwa mtu ameona zawadiiliyoonyeshwa na kiongozi, mwanakikundianaweza pia kusema ni zawadi ipi.

Kwa kupitia uongozi wa mzunguko, kila wiki kiongozimpya hujengwa. Kupitia Kujengana, tunatiana nguvu katiyetu kuhusu vitu vizuri alivyofanya kiongozi wa wikihiyo mkutanoni na talanta alizoonyesha mtu huyo.Kujengana pia ni njia ya kujua kuangalia vitu vizurikuwahusu watu halafu kuvisema. Sote twahitaji kufunzandimi zetu kusema yaliyo mazuri. Kuongezea, kikundichote hujua ni nini kikundi kinafikilia ni muhimu katikakiongozi mtumishi. Viongozi wanaofuata watafaidikakupitia waliyosikia katika Kujengana kuhusu viongoziwaliopita na kujua ni nini muhimu katika kuwa kiongozi.

Kujibu wakati wa kujengana, kiongozi wa wikihiyo atasema, “Asante.” baada ya kila mwanakikundikusema taarifa nzuri iliyo maalum. Hakuna kujadilianakuhusu vipi kungekuwa kuzuri zaidi ama tofauti. Maranyingi, mtu huyo hufurahi anapoambiwa kuhusumambo mazuri aliyofanya wakati wa mkutano. Wakatimwingine, huwa tunajua mambo kujihusu ambayohatukuwa tunajua!

Kujengana husaidia kiongozi wa siku hiyo kujuatalanta zake na kuzidi kuzitumia. Kujengana pia husaidiakikundi kidogo kwa sababu wana kikundi wotehuboresha uongozi wao wa utumishi wanapozidikujifunza.

Kujengana ni baraka mara mbili!

Kupalilia kuna umuhimu kwa sababu hizi:

1. Mimea yako yahitaji maji, virutubisho vyaudongo na mwanga ili ikue kinguvu. Kama kunamagugu yatashindana na mimea yako kupatavitu hivi. Magugu yatatumia virutubisho vyaudongo na maji ambayo mimea yako inahitaji.Matokeo ni kuwa mimea yako itakuwa dhaifuna yaweza kushindwa kuishi.

2. Kama eneo lako halijatolewa magugu, waduduwatavutwa kwa eneo hilo. Wadudu wanawezakuharibu na kuua mimea yako. Kwa hivyomagugu yalivyo chache, ndivyo nafasi ya nyokana wadudu kuwa inapungua.

Hapa zipo baadhi ya faida za kupalilia shamba lako:• Mimea Hukua haraka zaidi kwani magugu

hayachukui virutubisho na maji kutoka kwaudongo.

• Mimea itakuwa yenye nguvu na ikue kwa urefu

kwa wakati mfupi• Mimea yaweza kupata mionzi ya jua inayohitaji

bila kuzuiliwa• Mimea haijawekwa wazi ksz magonjwa mengi.• Mimea imezuiliwa kutokana na kuenezwa kwa

moto• Mashamba yasiyo na magugu yanaonyesha

kuwa vikundi vidogo vinayadumisha na nimfano katika mradi wa TIST. Hili litawavutiawatu wengi kuja na kuona kazi yenu.

Ukishapalilia eneo hilo, hakikisha umetoa magugukutoka shambani. Ukiyaacha magugu yaliyokufakaribu na mimea, bado yanaweza kuwavutia waduduna magonjwa ambayo yanaweza kuharibu mimeayako. Unaweza kutumia magugu kutengenezambolea kwa sababu joto la mtengano wa magugulaweza kuua mbegu za magugu na baadhi yamagonjwa.

Kumbuka kupalilia mashamba yenye miti yako pia!

Tunashukuru kwa sababu ya mvua tosha msimuhuu, lakini tukumbuke kupalilia mimea yetu.

Sasa kwa kuwa mvua imefika, miche inahitajikupandwa. Ni muhimu mwezi huu kuhakikisha kuwamiche iko tayari kuhamishwa kutoka kitaluni nakupandwa shambani.

Miche kwanza inahitaji kutayarisawha kwa halingumu iliyo shambani. Kama miche imekuwa ikichungwavyema kitaluni, inaweza kuwa ikipata maji zaidi ya ambayoitapata ikishapandwa shambani. Kidogo kidogo,ipunguzie maji unayoipa na uifungulie jua lotekuhakikisha itaweza kuhimili uhamisho huu inavyofaa.

Sifa za miche mizuriKama mwelekezo wa kijumla (ukikumbuka

namna mbalimbali huwa na sifa mbalimbali) miche mizuriya kupanda huwa na sifa zifuatazo:• Shina linapotokeza lafaa liwe na urefu wa mizizi au

mfuko mara mbili.• Shina lafaa kuwa lenye nguvu na gumu.• Miche inapaswa kuwa na mizizi myembamba mingi

pamoja na mizizi mikubwa.• Miche mingi itakuwa na sifa hizi baada ya miezi miwili

ikishaota.

Kuhamisha• Beba miche ikiwa imesimama inavyofaa• Pima duara lenye upana wa sentimeta thelathini

shambani• Toa mchanga wa juu na huuweke kwa pango• Toa safu la pili la mchanga hadi sentimeta thelathini

na uweke kwa pango lingine.• Safu la nyasi sentimeta tano ( nyasi kavu msimu

wa mvua, nyasi mbichi msimu wa ukavu). Vikundivingine huongeza mbolea pia.

• Toa mche mfukoni. Usivunje mchanga uliozungukamizizi.

• Weka mche shimoni• Rudisha mchanga wa juu kwanza, halafu safu la pili

la mchanga.• Vikundi vingine havijazi shimo hadi pomoni, ilhali

huacha pengo lasentimeta chache. Hili husaidiakuingiza maji ya mvua shimoni na mchangani. Hilisana sana husaidia maeneo makavu.

• Mchanga ambao hubaki unaweza kuwekwa kwapango kwa upande wa chini wa mche. Tendo hilihusaidiakushika maji yoyote ya mvua nakuyarudisha shimoni.

• Chotea mche maji.Kumbuka pia kuwa ili kuupa mche wako nafasi

nzuri ya kuishi inafaa huipande ikitengana meta tatukwenda nne . Ukiipanda karibu kuliko hivyo, miche yako

haitapata maji na madini ya mchanga yote inayoitaji kwasababu ya ushindani mwingi. Itakosa nguvu na yawezakufa, kwa hivyo fuata mwenendo mwema zaidi wakutenganisha kwa meta mbili na nusu kwenda tatu.

Umuhimi wa mitiMiti ni muhimu sana kwa sababu za kimazingira nakibidhaa:

A. Kuboresha mazingira:••••• Miti hufunika mchanga, tendo ambalo hulinda

mchanga kutokana na mmomonyokounaosababishwa na upepo na maji.

••••• Majani na matawi huanguka ardhini na kuoongezamadini mchangani.

••••• Miti huongeza unyevu mchangani kwa kuufunikamchanga na kupunguza evaporation.

••••• Mizizi ya miti husaidia kuushika mchanga na hivyobasi kupunguza mmomonyoko.

••••• Mizizi husaidia maji kuingia mchangani na hivyobasi kuboresha mzunguko wa maji yaliyo chini yaardhi.

••••• Miti huboresha hali ya anga ya ilipopandwa kwakuongeza unyevu hewani ( kuoneza ubaridi)

••••• Miti huboresha uzuri wa hewa kwa kunyonyahewa chafu n na kupumua hewa safi.

••••• Miti hutupa kivuli na pa kujifunika.

B. Thamani ya kibidhaa na kilishe:••••• Bidhaa za kujenga ( vyombo vya kutumia ndani ya

nyuma, gogo, kamba na kadhalika)••••• Kuni au makaa••••• Dawa••••• Lishe ya watu na ng’ombe

Faida hizi ni zenye thamani sana kwa mkulimana kwa dunia yote. Utafiti wa hivi juzi wa wakulima waTIST katika Kenya ulionyesha kuwa thamani ya matunda,lishe ya ng’ombe na kuni kutoka kwa miti waliyopandawakiwa TIST na mavuno bora kutokana na Ukulima Borailifika elfu thelathini na saba kwa kila mkulima. Ni ngumukupima thamani ya faida za mchanga baridi na wenyeunyevu zaidi na faida zingine za kazi tunayofanya katikaTIST, lakini tunaiona thamani hii mashambani mwetukila siku.

Kupendakeza upandaji wa miti hivyo basi, nimuhimu sana kwa jamaa.Fikiria ambayo twaweza kufanya kukipandazaidi tukiwa pamoja!
