1Artist Statement

“ For many years my work has been concerned with the quality and meaning of the drawn line. Through my contact with Japan I have been influenced by the inherently different nature of the line in the East and West. The origin of the eastern line lies in calligraphy and its fascination for me rests in the tension between meaning and abstraction. In the artwork for 15 Sackville Street I created an abstract drawing as the starting point, using its free, hand-drawn quality as a counterpoint to the formal symmetry of the façade. The translation of the original drawing and its application to architectural fabric has captured its spontaneity and organic character. The relative scale of the drawing forms a rich ‘landscape’ of line at street level, complementing the quiet geometry and proportions of the façade. It thus creates a linear dialogue. I have titled the artwork Terza Rima, the description of interlocking 3 line rhymes in poetry. This refers to my original drawing, which was created by hand using three batons”.

Biography

Rebecca Salter graduated from Bristol Polytechnic and then spent two years as a research student at Kyoto City University of the Arts, Japan. While in Japan she was trained in the technique of Japanese woodblock and she combines this interest with her main practice in painting. In 2003 she was artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut and a suite of drawings produced during the residency were subsequently acquired by the Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut, New Haven. Rebecca Salter’s work has been featured in numerous international solo and group exhibitions.

15 Sackville Street is designed on a modular basis to offer maximum flexibility. Every floor is column-free and designed to accommodate the spatial needs of any business. Quality of materials is paramount: separate male and female facilities at each level are partitioned by glass and walnut, and finished with superior ceramic tiling and Italian basalt vanity tops.

Sustainability is a core theme: the design achieves BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard without compromising day-to-day operational efficiency or flexibility. A focus on low energy and high performance - with thermal glazing, fan coil air conditioning and multiple lighting options - ensures running and maintenance costs are optimised.
