NewsNEWSevery child Ready to Read!Reading picture books to a child from birth to age 5 is the best way to start them on the road to success. The time spent cuddling with your preschooler, reading these simple books in a warm, nurturing setting is both a pleasure and an investment in your child’s future. Or your grandchild’s, or your neighbor’s child, or any youngster you care about deeply.

In March, the Flint Public Library part-nered with area Ro-tary clubs to train more than 60 people from Flint and Genesee County to teach a workshop “Help Me Get Ready to Read.” These people are now spreading out into the community to teach daycare providers, parents, grandparents, preschool staff, early childhood professionals, literacy volunteers and librarians how to help children be fully Ready to Read when they enter Kindergarten.

How can you learn these skills? Come to our story times at the Library and watch our librarians as they work on early literacy skills with our young patrons. Pick up one of our brochures Ready to Read with Rotary. If your group would like to have a one-hour workshop on “Help Me Get Ready to Read,” contact us and we will connect you with one of the Rotary volunteers. Call Cathy Lancaster at 810-249-2170or [email protected].

Story Slamapalooza with karen czarnikyou’ve heard of Poetry Slams right? Join the latest craze with Story Slams. Everyone’s got a good story to tell.

Come to our Teen Story Slam and share your tale of woe, wisdom, humor, tragedy, or triumph.

The 1st hour of the program begins with story coaching by professional storyteller Karen Czarnik, improv exercises, and small group dynamics.

During the 2nd hour Teen Storytellers will present their stories on stage in front of the group. Not everyone needs to tell their story aloud to participate. Teen storytelling is wonderful when peers support as listeners. The listening audience, however, will be encouraged to work on a story during the first hour of the program. The story slam winner receives the coveted Slamapalooza award! (Website: http://storyrhythms.com).
