俳句

Organized by The International Academic Forum

as part of The Third Annual Asian Conference on Literature and Librarianship 2013

About Vladimir Devidé Despite a successful international academic career as a renowned mathematician, with professorships in Australia and the US, as well as his native Croatia at the University of Zagreb, it is primarily as a Japanologist and haiku poet that Vladimir Devidé is now remembered. Devidé was not only one of the world’s most celebrated haiku poets, but a tireless promoter of Japanese culture. If Croatia is now considered a Haiku “superpower”, with more poets practicing the art per capita than any other nation, it is largely thanks to his efforts. Vladimir Devidé died in August 2010.

The Vladimir Devidé Haiku Award is for haiku regardless of being traditional or modern; it transcends haiku divisions and is based only on literary merit. The announcement of the Awards and reading of the winning haiku was made by Professor Mark Williams of Akita International University, Japan at LibrAsia 2013, April 5, 2013.

The Third Vladimir Devide Haiku Award Grand Prize was awarded to Krzysztof Kokot of Poland for the fol-lowing entry:

ACAH & LibrAsia 2013 - Conference in Review

With the Sakura in bloom and with fine April weather, over 250 delegates from over 40 countries were welcomed to Osaka for the Fourth IAFOR Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities (ACAH) and the Third Conference on Literature and Librarianship (LibrAsia).

The conference, which had the theme of connectedness and alienation, was fortunate to have a high caliber of feature speakers and presenters.

The Introductory address by Chairperson of the IAFOR Advisory Board, the Reverend Professor Stuart Picken set the aspirational tone of the conference by encouraging the conference delegates to step outside our usual disciplinary comfort zone and engage with academics from other disciplines. He noted that from the cross-pollination of an interdisciplinary approach we greatly enhance our own knowledgebase within our respective specialist fields.

The 2013 keynote address by Professor Mark Williams of Akita International University was titled “Life after Death? Writing within the Alienated Self in Post-War Japan.” It was a fascinating insight into the lives of Japanese authors Shimao Toshio and Shiina Rinzo and the role that literature played in dealing with the horror and trauma of war.

This year’s featured speaker at the conference was Professor Tien-Hiu Chiang from the National University of Tainan in Taiwan. Professor Chiang, a widely noted and published scholar, gave an address on how teachers contribute towards the pedagogy of normalized cultural capital, which results in the phenomenon of cultural reproduction within their students.

ACAH & LibrAsia 2013 - Conference in Review

A continuing feature of IAFOR’s Osaka based conferences is the showcasing of the Arts and Culture of Japan. The 2013 conference saw the awarding of the third annual Vladmir Devidé Haiku Poetry Award to Krzysztof Kokot of Poland, as well as a creative Haiku writing workshop given by prominent Haiku exponents Emiko Miyashita and Hana Fujimoto. The performance of the Taiko drums by leading Japanese group Batiholic was also a cultural highlight for the conference attendees. The powerful and complex rhythms of the group delighted the audience. The conference attendees also had the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience of the Japanese art of Calligraphy, with an informative demonstration given by Calligraphy students from Ritsumeikan University. The 2013 IAFOR Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities (ACAH) and the Third Conference on Literature and Librarianship (LibrAsia) was a packed and exciting programme of academic and cultural engagement. It offered delegates a diverse, informative and thought-provoking range of academic presentations as well as providing it’s many International delegates the chance to experience the hospitality of Japan and its culture. The conference organizing committee would like to thank the marvelous contributions of all the presenters and look forward to seeing you again in Osaka for next year’s ACAH and LibrAsia Conference.
