Greetings Compatriots;
I hope this letter finds you well. As everyone knows by now I am Camp Commander. At
the State Convention Jamie was appointed Chief of Staff by new Division Commander
Leland Sumners. At the meeting Tuesday Dean Lewis was inducted as Lt. Commander
and he will resume the quartermaster duties. We hope the new Leadership doesn’t
disappoint the camp. I urge you to read the upcoming events and make plans to attend
some or all of the services. I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone
to come to the May meeting at Darling Lake Clubhouse. This is our annual soldier supper,
where we honor our confederate soldier by cooking the same meal that they would have
had, fried side meat, lima beans and cornbread.
There will be plenty to eat, plenty of ice-tea, water
and there is some entertainment planed. I along with
Ricky Todd, Billy Todd, and Celia Todd will be there
about 3:00 to start cooking, also Ken Thrasher
and Betty will be there to help, supper will be at 7:00.
This is one of our best meeting of the year,
you do not want to miss this . We have been doing this
for fourteen years, and it always turns out great.
See ya on the 20th.
Johnny

What are you doing this Saturday?
Are you bringing your family and friends to the

You should be !!!
Charge to the Sons of Confederate Veterans
"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for
which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's
good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation
of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made
him glorious and which you also cherish." Remember, it is your duty to see that the true
history of the South is presented to future generations.

The Color Sergeants - Truth in History
Confederate history month,
I believe social media has been a good teaching tool for heritage.
But sometimes you need to step away from the computer, interact
with those folks who are hungry for knowledge.
It is always rewarding to speak with people, face to face and look
them in the eye, especially those who dislike us. A smile and educated
conversation scares them. Fly your banners this month (and every day)
in support of our ancestors who believed in states rights and freedom.
Never be ashamed, learn, teach and most of all ... be proud to be a
Southroner. You have something that cannot be bought, sold or given
...your heritage.
Lest we forget.
Zak

Wrapping up our series on cleaning gravestones, we'll focus on cleaning solutions, listing them in order of
increasing strength. Remember, always use the weakest cleaning solution that does the job effectively. Do
not increase the recommended strength of a given solution and only use those solutions recommended for
the particular type of stone.
1) marble & limestone
*water; non-ionic detergents such as photo-flo (available at photographic supply houses; Triton-X 100
or Igepal (available from conservators supply houses) & water. Use 1 ounce to 5 gallons of water.
* Vulpex (a soap appropriate for stone cleaning available from conservators' supply houses) & water.
Use 1 ounce to 5 gallons water.
* household ammonia. 1 cup to 1 gallon of water
* calcium hypochlorite. Use only to remove biological growth. Available as HTH & other swimming
pool disinfectants. Use 1 pound dry to 4 gallons water. (must be dissolved in warm water)
2) soapstone
* use water only.
3) slate
* water only
* non-ionic detergent & water (see marble)
4) sandstone
* water only
* non-ionic detergent & water (see marble)
This concludes our series on cleaning stones. Remember, if there is a question of suitability for cleaning,
don't do it. As doctors say, FIRST, DO NO HARM. Please welcome our newest Full Guardians, Sam
Dusenbury, Dale Altman, Leo Cooper & Dennis Fulmer.

where he served under Captain Samuel Smart. He was promoted to Captain on January 15th of
1863 where he took over for Captain Smart who had resigned his commission due to age and ill
health. The 26th was made up from a consolidation of the 6th and 9th Infantry Battalions in late
1862 because the two battalions were essentially wiped out in that first summer of fighting in
Virginia. The 26th Infantry Regiment was organized at Charleston, South Carolina, in
September, 1862. After serving in South Carolina he along with his unit moved to Mississippi,
and was placed in N.G. Evans' Brigade, where they confronted the Federals at Jackson. Later the
regiment returned to Charleston, then in the spring of 1864 was sent to Virginia. Here it was
assigned to Elliott's and Wallace's Brigade. It participated in the long Petersburg siege south and
north of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. The 26th suffered their greatest
single battle loss at the Mine Explosion, (The Crater) July 30, 1864 when they lost 72 men. They
lost many more at Sayler's Creek, and surrendered at Appomattox with General Robert E. Lee.
The Buck Family Cemetery carries the name of Henry Buck's father (Henry), who was buried
there in 1870. Henry Buck was a descendant of Jonothan Buck, who founded Bucksport, Maine,
in 1762. He was a pioneer in the Lumber Industry of South Carolina at Bucksville.
