Welcome to the May issue of Seattle Natural Awakenings!

This is our “Women’s Health” issue and one of my favorites of the year. Health is a deeply personal topic to me, as I live (and learn to thrive) with autoimmune disease. For years, I thought that if only I got enough acupunc-ture, ate enough kale or somehow cleared my mind of every last nagging worry that I could banish my symptoms. It hasn’t worked that way—it turns out there are some battles in life we are meant to fight and learn a great deal about ourselves along the way. For anyone who is experiencing chronic illness, I have just two recommendations, but they are the most important I’ve found: improve your di-

gestion, and rethink how often you put your physical, emotional and mental needs aside to honor other commitments. Sometimes, life is unavoidably full of these commitments and we all go through seasons when it’s impossible to consistently carve out time to stay healthy, well and fit. That’s why I love “Meditation: The End of Suffering” (page 21) and Sadhguru’s emphasis on meditating as something you become; if you can’t have an ideal life right now, learn to let go of your expectations and love the life you have. It may be crazy, but there’s beauty in the chaos - just look a little closer. For those days when you really do feel a little crazy, our article “Ed-ible Hormones” (page 13) delves into recent research on a handful of power foods that have been found to offer hormone balancing properties. In a pro-file article (page 19), local esthetician Victoria Raiskey Anderson offers great tips and insight into the mind/body connection when it comes to skin care. Creating a peaceful home may be just the ticket to more rest and relaxation. “Home Rejuvenation” (page 23) will show you how to take advantage of some fantastic rebates offered by the City of Seattle for residents to add green and sustainable improvements like rain gardens, solar power, and more.

There’s lots more in these pages—enjoy!

To your health and happiness,

Amma Returns to Embrace the Northwest

World-re-nowned

humanitarian and spiritual leader Sri Mata Amritanan-damayi Devi (Amma) will be in Bellevue this May as part of her eleven city North American tour. She will be offering free programs on Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Monday, May 27 at 7 p.m. Programs will include spiritual talks, devotional singing and the opportunity to receive Amma’s darshan—a spiritual bless-ing in the form of a physical motherly embrace. A paid retreat will be held from Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27. All proceeds from the retreat and the sale of books, artwork, cloth-ing, food, etc., directly support Amma’s vast array of charitable humanitarian activities and programs underway in over 40 countries, known collectively as Embracing The World. The InDeed Campaign for Nature, one of Amma’s newest programs, has been officially recognized by UNESCO as a project of the United Nations De-cade of Education for Sustainable De-velopment. The InDeed Campaign asks participants to make a commitment to do one or more of the following: conserve water, reduce their carbon footprint, plant a tree, grow their own veggies, carpool, or build a house for birds or bugs in order to collectively work to make the world a better place.

Free programs will be held at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue, located at 900 Bel-levue Way NE. Arrive 90 minutes early to be seated. For more information: Amma.org/Seattle.

Heavy Metal Toxicity Lecture

Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren, known as “Dr. T,” will return to Se-attle to give a lecture on toxic heavy metals and their

impact on health on May 6, 7 p.m., University Heights Center, room 109, 5031 University Way NE, Seattle. Ad-mission: $10 online or $12 at the door. Dr. T will also see clients for skin clinic appointments on May 7. Dr. T will cover: how toxic metals accumulate and directly affect the brain, immune system, hormones,

and other physiological systems; how the body can detoxify itself of these toxic metals; reliable tests to determine whether one is suffering from heavy metal tox-icity, and how one can prevent heavy metals accumulation and cleanse the body. Dr. T is passionate about educating audiences so that they can take individu-al ownership of their health and well-being, rather than giving away this respon-sibility to disease-oriented doctors and insurance companies. Lecture attendees can expect to walk away with valuable information on how to be “good consum-ers” of the health care industry. Dr. T will also be seeing clients on May 7 for his gentle, non-medical, non-sur-gical, painless and esthetically pleasing method of removing skin tags and moles.

Multiple Sclerosis Researchers Seek Help with Unconventional Studies

Bastyr University researchers are launching a series of studies into

underexplored facets of multiple sclerosis, a nervous-system disorder with no known cause. An unpre-dictable disease, MS causes severe degenerative symptoms in some patients while others remain largely unaffected. One study, led by clinical research assistant professor Laurie Mischley, ND, will explore why some MS patients do not worsen over time, and whether diet, lifestyle and integrative medicine are related to their success. Anyone with MS can participate in the five-year study, which will involve completing an online form once every six months. Researchers will review the data for common traits shared by those with benign MS. The study will support future clinical trials measuring whether complementary, alternative and inte-grative medicine (CAM) can help slow the progression of MS. (Visit http://bit.ly/11t3g7p to participate in the study.) A second study explores the relationship between blood clotting and MS, and how diet affects the disease. Participants will come to Bastyr’s campus for a single visit to give a blood sample and answer questions about diet and lifestyle. “When little is known about effective treatments for conditions such as MS, it makes sense to cast a broad net to try to identify the most promising treatment options,” says Daniel C. Cherkin, PhD, director of the Bastyr University Research Institute. He says Dr. Mischley’s focus on diet and disease connections will be especially useful, since few medical researchers receive extensive training in nutrition.

“Urban Homesteaders” Opt for Healthy & Traditional Meals

The popularity of conscious and nourishing foods con-

tinues to rise, coupled with growing desire to make these foods quickly, easily and in the most healthful way possible, according to Michelle Liu. The vice president of Essenergy, the company that manufactures the VitaClay, called a “smart, organic multi-cooker,” Liu says her company recently called their customers to find their reasons for purchasing their product. “This market is exploding, and these people are pas-sionate about their eco-conscious food and how they pre-pare it,” Liu says. “Many are vegetarian, and many are not, but they are all choosing healthy cookware.” VitaClay cookers are different from traditional slow cookers because they feature an all-natural insert made of organic clay, which proponents say helps retain juices and nutrients, as well as enhances the flavor of foods while avoiding exposure to the chemicals and metals found in many types of cookware, including most slow cookers. “The young urban homesteaders are bringing nourishing traditions back in a big way,” Liu explains. “Whole grains and one-pot meals, soups, stews and bone broths are big with this group. They cook more than once a day and many are in cooperative living situations,” she notes. Liu is pleased that sales of VitaClay cookers are growing and says it will help these urban homesteaders achieve their conscious eating goals. “Lots of people who practice yoga and exercise know VitaClay provides whole meal cooking solutions that will not compromise their health,” she says. “It is lead free, aluminum free, and non-stick chemical free which is so important to them. And of course, it is super fast and super easy to use.”

Here’s what some of our customers have to say about Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain:“It totally resolved by back issues and knee pain in one day. I had back surgery twice and one knee replacement. I still had intense pain and my doctor said I would have to live with it. I use it every night and in the morning and I have not had pain in months. Thank you for a life-saving product.”

Darlene Masters“I ... was amazed at how good this is. It has taken away the pain from my hip/leg/ankle and reduced the swelling in my ankles I get every summer. Thank you!”

Patty Mullins“I was told about this by my doctor’s office. It truly helped my back and knee pain. It is a little costly but well worth the extra cost over others in discount stores. It works so well, I don’t even need to use it as much now. Thank you for bringing it to us.”

More Sleep Helps Shed Pounds

Enjoying more zzz’s is not usually associated with

weight loss, but a growing number of epidemiological studies suggest that insuf-ficient sleep may be linked to a greater risk of weight gain. The latest results from a study presented at the 2012 annual meeting of the

Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior points out that sleep behavior influences body weight by affecting not only how many calories we consume, but also how much energy we expend. When researchers at Tübingen and Lübeck universi-ties, in Germany, and Uppsala University, in Sweden, investigated the effect of short-term sleep deprivation on hunger, physical activity and energy levels, they discov-ered that insufficient sleep increased the participants’ sensations of hunger by raising the level of the “hun-ger hormone”, ghrelin. The less sleep a person had, the hungrier they felt. After only one night of disrupted sleep, the volunteers moved around less and burned off fewer calories in their resting state than their counterparts that enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

healthbriefsFewer Scans May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

While screening for breast cancer is im-portant, women should avoid unneces-

sary medical imaging, according to a recent re-port issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which identified two factors that increased the

risk for the disease: post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy and radiation exposure from medical imaging. Physician Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, epidemiology and bio-statistics at the University of California-San Francisco, who contributed to the IOM report, notes that CT scans and other forms of medical imaging have revolutionized medi-cine and can be lifesaving. However, she recommends that women engage their doctors in the decision-making process and discuss the necessity and safety of all potential radiological scans. To understand the risks and benefits, it’s suggested women ask their doctor: “Is this scan absolutely essential? Is it necessary to do it now? Are there other, alternative tests [such as thermography]? How can I be sure the test will be done in the safest way possible? Will having the scan infor-mation change the management of my disease? Can I wait until after seeing a specialist before getting the scan?”

Midwife-Led Birth Centers Improve OutcomesWomen that receive care

at midwife-led birth centers incur lower medical costs and are less likely to have Caesarean births than women that give birth at hospitals, according to new findings by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). The rising number of Cesarean births in the United States (32 percent in 2010, according to the National Centers for Disease Control National Vital Statistics Report) has generated concern due to short- and long-term health implications for women, their newborns and future pregnancies. The AABC study, which included more than 15,500 women that received care in 79 midwife-led birth centers in 33 states from 2007 through 2010, found that fewer than 6 percent of the participants required a Caesarean birth, compared to nearly 24 percent similarly low-risk women cared for in a hospital setting. Birth centers—homelike facilities functioning within the health care system—are based on a wellness model of pregnancy and birth personalized to individual needs. “They are uniquely positioned to provide healthy women and their newborns with maternity care, avoiding unneces-sary Caesarean births,” advises AABC President-Elect Lesley Rathbun, a certified nurse midwife and family nurse practi-tioner. “Americans need to learn about the high-quality care that midwife-led birth centers offer.”

Taking a brisk walk or bike ride may stave off

cognitive decline better than reaching for the dai-ly crossword puzzle, says a new study published in the journal Neurology. Researchers at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh reviewed the medical records of more than 600 Scots born in 1936 that were given MRI scans at age 73. “People in their 70s that partici-pated in more physical exercise, in-cluding walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those that were less physically active,” says study author Alan J. Gow, Ph.D. Surprisingly, the study showed that participating in mentally and socially stimulating activities, such as visiting family and friends, reading or even learning a new language, did little to ward off the symptoms of an aging brain. Study participants will undergo a second MRI scan at age 76, and researchers plan to compare the two scans to see if the links between exer-cise and better brain health hold up.

Sometimes referred to as the aristocrat of vegetables,

asparagus has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. It was prized by ancient Greeks and Ro-mans for its taste and reputed medicinal qualities, and 19th-century French bride-grooms, believing it was an aphrodisiac, frequently ate several helpings on the eve of their nuptials. The crop reaches its peak during April and May. Packing a fiber-filled punch of vita-mins A and C, this princely veggie also delivers significant helpings of folate and rutin, which help to strengthen blood vessels. Its delicate flavor is best pre-served by stir-frying or light steaming.

1Avoid fabric softener or fragrances. These can make your pads less ab-

sorbent, and can contribute to irritation.

2Don’t use bleach. It degrades the fabric, especially the area around

the snap. Using bleach is the quickest way to wear out your pads.

3 Pre-soak in a soaking container before washing to keep your cloth

pads stain-free. Adding a little Bac-Out or Ruby’s Red Wash is a great idea, too. Always change the soaking water every day or they’ll get smelly.

4Always wash in cold water. Cold water helps prevent staining,

doesn’t stress the cotton fibers, and is better for the environment and your energy bill. Everybody wins.

5Stock up. The more cloth pads you have, the fewer times each one

gets used during your cycle, giving you more time before you need to replen-ish your stash. And when you buy a

GladRags Kit you’ll spend less than if you bought each pad individually, sav-ing you even more cash.

6Use less detergent. Most of us use way more detergent than we need

to—and more detergent does not equal more clean. The excess will build up on your pads, reducing their absor-bency and making them wear out more quickly. Try Rockin’ Green’s Femme Rock for a natural clean, and always follow the directions on the packaging.

7Line dry outside or on a drying rack. The heat of a dryer slowly

damages cloth pads, shortening their lifespan. Plus, if you dry outside, the sun will act as a natural stain fighter. If you prefer to use the dryer, always choose the lowest setting.

In addition to relieving symptoms of menopause and andropause and helping maintain a normal, balanced

hormone system, healthy eating can yield many other benefits. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine research re-ports, these include weight management, bone health and fertility and natural de-fenses against breast and prostate cancers and osteoarthritis symptoms. Despite drug-free approaches to hormone health that predate synthe-sized 20th-century hormone replace-ment therapy, the pharmaceutical industry has all but vanquished eating appropriately nutritious foods as a means to balancing hormones. Why do people embrace external sourcing when natural internal functioning is the better, less costly and more permanent solu-tion? Even the current bio-identical up-grade of hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may lead to some biological dependency on these substances. Appropriate BHRT should include an analysis of how the individual uniquely metabolizes hormones and functional foods that can help. An edible approach to hor-mone health provides deep nour-ishment for glands, enabling in-creased production of what they lack due to changes associated with age or illness. Healthy eat-ing likewise reduces the activity of excess hormones already in the body, beneficially mimicking their previous function without the unwanted side effects. Here are some leading food aids to get us there.

PomegranateThe resemblance of the

inner topography of a pomegranate to an ovary is more than poetic homage. Pre-Renaissance Western herbalists commonly held that a plant food’s visual similarity to a human organ indicated a positive health correlation. Research published in the Journal of Ethnophar-macology on pome-granates by Japanese scientists revealed that the seeds and fleshy capsules within which they are suspended, called arils, contain estrogens structurally similar to those found in mammals. Preclinical results published in Phytochemistry may explain why extracts of these plant-derived bio-identical hormones mimicking estradiol, estriol and estrone are capable of replacing the function of an ovary. A Japanese study published in the Journal of Ethnopharma-cology reported that female mice whose ovaries had been removed and were later fed pomegranate juice and pomegranate

seed extract for two weeks showed re-versals in bone loss, uterine weight

loss and anxiety.

BroccoliCruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts,

collard and mustard greens and the root vegetables kohlrabi and

rutabaga contain glucosino-lates, which help protect DNA from damage, according to a study published in Current

Science. Also, ever-in-creasing preclinical and

of more than 100 health problems, includ-ing a wide range of cancers, like those affecting the bladder and breasts.

FlaxUnwelcome symptoms of perimenopause (which can last years before the completion of menopause) can be offset through daily ingestion of ground flax, which can be added to cereals, salads and other foods. Ground flaxseed mixed with dried berries is particularly palatable. As the ovarian reserve of natu-rally manufactured hormones ex-hausts itself and prompts an imbalance, flaxseed is partic- u-larly effective in rebalanc-ing levels of desirable estrogen metabolites, such as breast-friendly 2-hydroxylestrone. It contains a fiber, lignin, that upon digestion produces two important phytoestrogens capable of stimulating the body’s natural estrogen receptors in cases of estrogen deficiency and blocking both synthetic and natural estrogen when there is excess (as with estrogen-dominant condi-tions from puberty to menopause). These properties have been con-firmed in human clinical studies per-formed at the University of Toronto’s De-partment of Nutritional Sciences and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Thus, flaxseed may be considered a source of plant “estrogen” capable of prompting regression of estrogen-sensitive cancers, including those of the breast and

prostate. Extremely versatile in culinary applications, combining flaxseed with ground cumin provides a medicinally potent homemade seasoning supporting women’s hormonal health.

CuminCumin—actually a fruit disguised as a spice—has tremendous hormone-modu-lating properties recently confirmed by findings in Experimental Biology and Medicine. Japanese scientists demonstrated that cumin seeds can inhibit loss of bone density and strength as effectively as estrogen in a female rat model of age-associated osteoporosis. They further found that the cumin seeds did not have estrogen’s weight-promoting and possible carcino-genic effects on the uterus. Imagine the potent hormone-bal-ancing properties of a dinner of steamed rutabaga dressed with ground flaxseeds and cumin with a side of mustard greens with olive oil and pomegranate dressing. It beats a serving of Premarin with a serving of unwanted side effects any day. Sayer Ji is the founder of GreenMedInfo.com and advisory board member of the National Health Federation. Core Matters Pilates Workshop - Saturday, May 25

May usually brings the first hints of idyllic summer days to come, but in Western Washington, we still have our share of rainy days to get through. Hot

yoga is one way Pacific Northwest residents can keep warm while waiting for the rain to dry up and the beautiful Seattle summer to appear. There are two common styles of hot yoga: hot hatha (or bikram) and hot vinyasa. Hot hatha is a class comprised of two sets of the same set of 26 poses: holding these poses is great for bone density and strength-training benefits, ac-cording to a recent study in Yoga Journal, while hot vinyasa is a fast-paced class that varies from session to session and provides more calorie burn and a cardiovascular workout. Both forms of hot yoga provide the opportunity to stretch

and increase flexibility. A new yogi might wonder what the heat adds to the practice. Students tend to sweat prolifically, and the warmth of the room burns a few additional calories. These differ-ences lead to detoxification of the body and skin, as well as added flexibility due to warm muscles that are capable of stretching farther. Any yoga practice will help detoxify and stretch the body, but hot yoga is even more effective in these areas than other forms of yoga. There are a variety of temperature ranges for hot yoga, with the heat in some studios being set around 105 degrees. Meanwhile, power vinyasa studios tend to set the heat to 90-95 degrees, and many other studios leave the thermostat at room temperature. Rachel James, owner of Hot Yoga of Mill Creek, said that one of the most common misconceptions about hot yoga is that you have to already be very fit to attend class. “You are able to do it at any age, with any physical dis-ability,” said James. “It is a low impact workout, with high results.” James, herself, lost weight and experienced a lot of other benefits when she started her hot yoga practice. “I believe [yoga] really helps you to become a more balanced person overall,” said James; “I lost 25 pounds and feel better than I have ever felt. I was an athlete who ate very well and worked out five to six days a week; howev-er… It was with hot yoga that I saw a huge change and now love the way my body looks. It also helped with stress and injuries… I will practice hot yoga for the rest of my life.” Of course, James said students should check with their doctor if they have health concerns or if they are pregnant. “I believe that the Pacific Northwest is pretty active and health conscious,” added James. “Since it is pretty cold and rainy here, students love to do hot yoga for many reasons, but one of the top ones is to get warm.”

Writer Andrea Blair Cirignano is a local yoga instructor with a journalism background. She believes yoga is for every-one and that each member of the community could benefit from the practice in some way, shape or form. Her articles highlight the unique pairing of this ancient practice with a modern Pacific Northwest lifestyle. Find out more about Andrea at abcyogi.com.

She might just change your mind!

Natural HealthNot only does the FAIR emphasize using natural health care alternatives, it has a whole stage dedicated to the subject. Interested in making your own medicine, but not sure where to start? Make sure to arrive early for Herbal Medicine Making Basics with Erin Mc-Intosh of Mountain Rose Herbs. You’ll learn how to make tinctures, salves, infused oils, syrups and more. Stephanie Tourles, author of Organic Body Care Recipes and Hands-on Healing Remedies, will cover topically applied herbal medi-cines, and highlight 10 herbs that help heal and comfort the sick and injured. Organic GardeningEating delicious, healthy food and creating your own natural medicines is only the beginning of what the FAIR has to offer. Our distinguished presenters will also teach you how to grow the ingredients for your kitchen and medicine cabinet. Barbara Damrosch, author of The Garden Primer, works in her garden year-round, and brings fresh, homegrown food to her table even in the middle of winter. She’ll teach you how to do the same during her keynote lecture. If you’re a budding gardener without much experience, grab a front row seat at Handmade Garden Projects author Lorene Edwards Forkner’s talk on vegetable gardening. Her tips are specifically geared toward gardening in the Pacific North-west. Want some meat on your table with all the veggies you’ve grown? Sylvia Bernstein, author of Aquaponic Gardening, may convince you to try your hand at raising fish and plants together in a closed system.

Renewable EnergyIf your skills lie in the fields of home improvement and hands-

He’ll show you how to create solar hot water, smart grids, rocket grills, electric motorcycles and grey-water systems—all using recycled materials and basic handy-man skills. If you’re ready to commit to green power for your home, Dan and Don Adams of Earthineer.com will show you how to make your own solar panels from scratch. You can even try your hand at building a solar cell at their booth after the workshop. What else is there to look forward to at the FAIR? Only 150 workshops by notable experts, 50 book signings by workshop presenters, local and organic lunches and snacks in the food court, a fiber arts competition and 75 off-stage demonstrations by exhibitors in our 300-booth green shopping pavilion. (And don’t miss the local, organic, fair trade chocolate. It’s to die for!)

The FAIR will be held June 1-2 at the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup. Tickets are $20 for one day and $30 for the weekend in advance at MOTHEREARTHNEWSFAIR.com, and $25 for one day and $35 for the weekend at the gate.

The key to superb skin care is a balance of natural nutrients and peace of mind, according to

esthetician Victoria Raisky Anderson, owner of Seattle based Nurture Ritual, a skincare boutique. Raisky Anderson was born in Ukraine and moved to New York when she was 17. After dealing with skin care problems repeatedly without positive results, a friend in college introduced her to the profession of skin care and sparked a lifelong passion. Raisky Anderson became an es-thetician and started working for local spas, but something was missing. “I felt I could offer my clients so much more by using products that actually had some life force running through them,” she says. “I loved what I was doing, but every time I worked with someone there was a lot more going on than just their skin. I was really observing how people’s life-style choices and layers of mental and emotional issues were affecting their

Nurture Ritual and continued to refine her knowledge about balance, puri-fication, and natural nutrition for the mind, body and skin. Her services include holistic skin treatments and she uses all-natural, paraben-free organic products in her practice, many of which she creates herself and can be found at several stores in the Seattle area, as well as at NurtureRitual.com. Raisky Anderson also offers micro cur-rent and ultrasonic peels, natural hair removal using soy wax or sugar, and energy work therapy including Body Talk Access and Emotion Code. A big part of Raisky Anderson’s early success was her observation that lifestyle choices and emotional health also played key parts in skin wellness, according to Raisky Anderson. “What I found to be really fasci-nating is that each area of the face is connected to a different organ in the body, and each organ is also respon-sible for processing and generating different emotions,” Raisky Anderson says, explaining a well known fact of Chinese medicine. “So when you’re having an emotional unbalance or stress, it will be reflected in the area of the face that is connected to the organ producing the emotion. For example, if somebody has issues with their liver, or a lot of anger and frustration in their life, they will most often start having breakouts along the jaw line, on the sides of their neck, or on the apple of their left cheek,” she continues. “I do my best to educate my clients about this, as it gives them valuable insights not just into their skin, but into them-selves.” To increase her client’s natural glow and skin health, she recommends

eating lots of anti-oxidant and vitamin C rich foods, espe-cially fresh, organic fruits

appearance.” Raisky Anderson’s ideas continued to develop and she opened her first and highly acclaimed business in her hometown, New York City, receiving significant press coverage from maga-zines such as Allure and Time Out New York as her reputation for holistic skin care grew. After moving to Seattle several years ago, Raisky Anderson launched a boutique skincare business called

and vegetables, and staying hydrated. “Drink water all the time,” Raisky Anderson says. “If you don’t like it find ways to trick yourself into doing it, like maybe getting a very cool water bottle that you really like, so you will be tempted to drink from it.” On the emotional side of skin

health, she advises a peaceful lifestyle. “Watch out for negative thoughts and stress—those are your skin’s worst ene-mies,” Raisky Anderson says. “Exercise regularly, but do stuff that really brings you joy in the process. Get plenty of rest—this is very important. Wear sun protection. Make sure your skin is re-

ally hydrated.” Raisky Anderson also points out that facials have significant health ben-efits. “You should get regular facials,” she says. “They are not a luxury; they are your basic maintenance. If you can’t do it once a month, or every six weeks, at least try to do it every three months. Trust me, getting all that circu-lation going does make a difference,” she finishes. Raisky Anderson credits her focus on the mind-body connection while working with clients as being an important part of her philosophy of natural skin care. “It has become customary for my treatments to turn into healing therapy sessions in addition to being facials,” Raisky Anderson says.

When you were born, you were so small. And now, you have grown your body.

Obviously, the body is something that you gathered; it is an accumulation. Similarly, the mind is also an accumu-lation. The body is an accumulation of food; the mind is an accumulation of impressions. Whatever you accumulate can be yours, but it can never be you, because the very fact that you accumu-late means you gather something from somewhere else. Once you get identi-fied with things that you have gathered from the outside, your perception has completely gone haywire. The moment you experience the body as “myself,” and the moment you experience the impressions that you have in your mind as “myself,” you cannot perceive life the way it is; you are instead, only concerned with survival. For a human being, survival is very important, but it

is not enough. For any other creature on this planet, when the stomach is full, life is settled. But for a human be-ing, life does not end with the survival process. Actually, for a human being, life begins only after survival is ful-filled. Meditation means giving you an experience, an inner state, where what is you and what is yours is separate. It brings an absolute clarity of percep-tion; you see life just the way it is. Right now, your ability to go through this world is only to the extent that you clearly see it. For example, for thou-sands of years, people went on argu-ing about whether the planet is round or flat. Leave all the textbooks that you have read aside, take a walk and see—in your experience, is this planet round or flat? In your experience, it is still flat. This argument could have con-tinued forever, but man started flying.

We went up and looked down and it was very clear that the planet was round. We even went to the moon and looked down, and it was 100 percent clear. Only when we removed our-selves from this earth and looked down was there no more argument about it. Otherwise, we would still be arguing. The same is true for your own body and mind; unless there is a little distance, you don’t see it the way it is, because you are in it. Meditation is a simple process that gives you a little distance from your own mind and your own body. You have probably heard of the word “Buddha.” Bu means “buddhi,” or the intellect. Dha means “dada,” or one who is above. One who is above his intellect is a Buddha. A Buddha has clear perception of the nature of his mind. One who is in the intellect is a nonstop suffering human being. Look at this sincerely. Whatever you experience as moments of happi-ness and peacefulness are just those moments where you are able to leave anxiety, tension and stress behind. But if you turn back, they will be sitting right there, because once you are in your intellect, stress, anxiety and tension are very normal. But if you are above the intellect, it is the end of suffering. Being a Buddha means there is no question of suffering, because suffering has either come through your body or through your mind. Do you know any other kind of suffering other than physical and mental suffering? Once there is a distance from your physical body and your mental struc-ture, that is the end of suffering. Meditation is the first and the last freedom, because it gives you a gallery view of your own body and your own mind. There can be no suffering once this distance is established.

Meditation is not something that you do; meditation is something that you become. Meditation is not an act; it is a certain quality that you grow into. Why is there a need to become meditative, first of all?

“Do you suffer from chronic fatigue, insom-nia, headaches, back or joint pain, or digestive problems? Have you been to a lot of differ-ent doctors, without getting any real relief? Are you tired of trying prescriptions and crazy diets that do nothing to fix your problems? If you answered yes to any of these, breathe a deep sigh of

relief. The solution to your health issues may be right here in my office. And I’m not just talking about chiropractic care. Though I do that too–with excellent results. If your body isn’t getting a proper nutritional balance to function at its best, chiro-practic care—no matter how good—may not be able to help you get well. However, once your body receives what it needs to start healing itself, chiro-practic care can absolutely speed a journey on the road to recovery. So, in addition to using a highly effective yet gentle, low-force adjustment technique (if you’re used to traditional chiropractic, you won’t feel like I’ve done a thing—babies sleep through their ad-justments—until I‘m done!), I recommend all my

patients go through a Nutritional Healing Examina-tion.Because these days, unless you:

Eat a well-balance, organic diet Take only the highest quality, organic, whole food supplements Are never exposed to chemical or pollutants such as modern cleaning products, pesticides, fertilizers, exhaust fumes, etc. Exercise regularly AND sleep 7-8 hours a night;

…chances are, you’re suffering from at least some nutritional imbalances or deficits. And your body may not be equipped to fight off illness or deal with toxins (goodness knows we’re all exposed to plenty of those every day). Quite frankly, what you’re not getting could very well be causing you to get sick. To find out if you have any imbalances or de-ficiencies, we recommend a simple, non-invasive Nutritional Healing Examination. If needed, we will also follow up by helping you determine exactly what supplements you need and how much. No more standing in the aisle wondering if you should take this vitamin or that one. It is our desire to see you give your body what it needs to get healthy—and stay healthy.

Many of us suspect that our homes could be more air-tight and energy efficient. We might even wish we

could be more comfortable at home—that we could get rid of cold drafts, for instance. But where do we begin?

knowledge is Power Before starting to fix what’s wrong, a homeowner must iden-tify problem areas. The first step is to get what’s called an energy assess-ment. During an energy assessment, a Seattle City Light auditor visits the home and thoroughly inspects the different contributors to the home’s energy footprint, including the heating system, insulation, windows, and major appliances. Inspections may also use an infrared camera or depressur-ization test to evaluate air leakage in the home. Seattle City Light and Community Power Works offer home energy assessments by certified auditors for just $95 (valued at $400). Income eligible customers may receive their assessment for free, along with subsidized energy-efficiency upgrades (Seattle.gov/housing/homewise). Soon after the assessment, the homeowner will receive an “Energy Performance Scorecard” that rates the current efficiency of the home and offers suggestions for improve-ments. The report includes the estimated costs of each

upgrade measure and calculates the potential amount of energy savings and carbon that can be avoided by upgrad-ing your house in an energy retrofit. The Community Power Works program helps residents identify available weatherization rebates from the local utili-ties (Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy), and may offer additional rebates of its own. “There is an awareness of the value of energy-efficient homes, especially in our area,” says Kim Mulligan, a Seattle “green” realtor who is upgrading her home’s furnace and insulation through the Community Power Works program. “It’s really a no-brainer. After the rebates and energy savings, I will basically be paying the same per month.”

Soak up the SunThe Puget Sound region may not be the sunniest spot on earth, but it is actually a very good place for solar panels. Not only can a properly sized solar panel array provide enough electrical power to meet a household’s needs, it is also a sound investment. The federal government offers a tax credit worth 30 percent of the cost of installing a solar electric system. Washington State will pay for the solar electricity home-owners generate. Incentives are even higher for systems that are manufactured in Washington. In addition, there is no state sales tax for most residential systems. The greatest incentive, however, might be watching the electrical meter spin backward on a sunny day. Becky Chan, a resident of Seattle’s Greenlake neighbor-hood, is adding a large solar panel array to her home (in-stalled by A & R Solar), which will bring her a federal rebate of $6,360. Despite the large rebate, Chan says her primary motivation for going solar was to help the environment. “Don’t get me wrong,” Chan says. “I’m happy to get the rebates, but we need to take care of the earth for future generations.” The Solarize Washington program facilitates neigh-bors organizing group-buying purchases that can result in discounts of 10 to 20 percent to residents of NW Seattle. When combined with the incentives and rebates above, the additional Solarize discount allows most participants to recoup about half the cost of installation in the first year.

is an Appliance upgrade in order?Seattle City Light offers generous rebates to homeowners will-ing to replace their old appliances with new, energy-efficient models. Customers who purchase a new, approved refrigera-tor can get a $50 rebate. Getting rid of a second refrigerator or freezer earns a $30 rebate (plus free removal of the old appliance). A new clothes washer earns a $100 rebate. Customers wanting to save even more on their electric bills and get even bigger rebates can trade in their exist-ing water heater for a new, ultra-efficient heat pump water heater and get a $500 check in the mail. For customers with electric heat, the city offers a $1,500 rebate for upgrading to a ductless heat pump, which can be twice as energy-efficient as the old baseboard models.

Holistic Approaches to Managing Anxiety

the Pacific Northwest. One of the best ways to reduce the impact on our precious watershed is to simply use less water. Start with the basics. Make sure faucets, show-ers, and toilets are not leaking any water. All those drips add up to a lot of water—around 11,000 gallons per year by some estimates.

Toilets are the main source of water use in the home, and getting a new one can lower utility bills by about $260 a year. Customers of Seattle Public Utilities can get a $30 rebate on a new high-efficiency toilet with the “Water-Sense” label. Qualifying low-income customers can get a new toilet for free. Homeowners can reduce the effects of toxic stormwater runoff by in-stalling a rain garden or cistern. A rain garden acts like a native forest, collect-ing, absorbing, and filtering stormwater runoff from a home’s rooftop. A cistern is a large tank that collects the water from the roof and stores it for later use, such as for watering the lawn during dry spells. Many residents of Seattle’s Bal-lard, North Union Bay, Windermere, and Delridge neighborhoods qualify for the RainWise program from Seattle Public Utilities. The program rebates up to 100 percent of the cost of install-ing a rain garden or cistern system. The average rebate is about $3,500.

lowering barriersWhile many homeowners would like to help the environment and lower their utility bills by making their homes more efficient, they worry about the initial investment. “People are looking for ways to do more for the environment and save money,” says Shannon Ellis-Brock, chief operating officer of Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union, an official lending partner for Community Power Works. PSCCU offers “Energy Smart” loans up to $50,000 to cover a wide array of green upgrades for borrow-ers who may or may not qualify for a traditional home equity loan. “Now is a really good time be-cause of the rebates,” says Ellis-Brock; however, she cautions that borrowers can’t always expect their loan pay-ment to be offset completely by energy savings. “It’s about being more com-fortable in your home, saving energy, and reducing your impact on climate change, as part of the total package” she says. Realtor Kim Mulligan echoes that sentiment. “It’s not just a monetary thing; it’s also about comfort and con-

You may be surprised to learn you are not alone. Most housing was built around cheap, abundant and carefree energy use.
