The Role of Factories of the Future PPP in
Industrial Innovation

Manufacturing & Europe
How important is manufacturing?
Despite the continued fall-out from crisis,
manufacturing means a lot for Europe:
 20 % Direct jobs
 67 % Exports
 65 % Business R&D Expenditure
Factories of the Future
I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE
 65 % Business R&D Expenditure
 Manufacturing in Europe remains
diverse
Importance of manufacturing now recognised by
EU and its member states...
....but also by Europe’s competitors
Development of more competitive & sustainable
industry needs support = ‘Factories of the Future’
Factories of the Future
151 PROJECTS
 Public-private partnership supporting research &
innovation in production technologies
 Launched in 2009
 1,000+ organisations from across Europe
High involvement of SMEs: 200+ to date
Expanding – increasing involvement from across
Factories of the Future
I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE
Expanding – increasing involvement from across
all of Europe
Projects launched to address multiple challenges
Majority of projects feature demo activities
 Success:
 New methods, technology break-through, spin-offs
Continuation of partnership under Horizon 2020
Formal agreement between EU & EFFRA = €1.15 billion
‘Factories of the Future 2020’ – strategic research roadmap
State of SMEsFactories of the Future
SMEs are highly important to Europe’s economy – manufacturing is no exception
Europe: With approx. 20 million SMEs providing 68%+ employment, their input
on our economy is substantial
At first SMEs weathered the crisis well, however suffered more negatively as
crisis continued
“..changes in the number of SMEs have been rather volatile..”
European Commission report on SMEs (“Recovery on the Horizn?” 2013)
I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE
crisis continued
SMEs are recovering but need support
Manufacturing are no exception: Varying in size and in use of technology
Therefore fertile ground for initiatives encouraging the use of new technologies,
methods, approaches etc
SMEs are interested in activities that assist but need solutions to real problems
rather than complexity
SMEs often unaware of potential support. There is a pressing need to inform
SMEs of opportunities available to them.
Must consider solutions from the perspective of
SMEs
Think of small European enterprise facing
serious competition from outside
Cannot expect an SME to stand alone
 Need tools to be competitive:
FoF & Manufacturing SMEsFactories of the Future
 Innovative technologies
 New approaches
 State-of-the-art products
 SMEs are empowered through cooperative
research
 Must look beyond project results
I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE
FoF & Manufacturing SMEsFactories of the Future
Increasing SME participation in FoF shows relevance of priorities &
desire of SMEs to innovate
SMEs were very responsive the FoF consultations during the
roadmap building process
FoF enabling SMEs to face challenges:
 Projects
I4MS: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE
 Projects
 Experienced network
 Access to knowledge
 One roadmap with clear priorities
 Consider two important questions:
Can European SMEs be competitive in global market?
Can a European SME be competitive against much larger
competitors?
Enabling Competitive SMEs
EFFRA believes answer to those questions is yes..
Yes by..
 embracing research, development & innovation
having a clear strategy & being congruent with it in any tactics
 working with passion & intelligence
being highly specialised & work with very committed
employees
Factories of the Future

employees
 being respectful of diversity
clustering with its community (e.g. address common
challenges)
training & education (e.g. EIT KIC on Added Value
Manufacturing)
ICT a key factor in all of the above.
In particular: ICT innovation in manufacturing needs to be
accessible to SMEs
Recap: FoF ICT Calls

The Role of ICT
ICT already ubiquitous in manufacturing &
will play major role in tomorrow’s factories,
as in all sectors of economy
R,D&I ensures both affordability of ICT
technologies & competitiveness
