Welcome to the 2013 season at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre! The Matt Dann Cultural Centre has been the home to performing arts in Hedland for over twenty years and during 2012 over 9,000 patrons attended our events.

This season be prepared for a celebration and an explosion of experiences that demonstrate the progressive development of our program which has gone from strength to strength each year.

In response to our audience feedback, great and not so great, the program reflects a mix of performance that is exciting, inspiring, challenging, side splitting and most of all entertaining.

Each performance has been chosen for its quality and its ability to excite our imagination. This season we are offering a world of artistic possibility: international dances, musicians and athletes in the 360 Allstars; orchestra in the WA Youth Jazz Ensemble; captivating theatre with the Black Swan State Theatre; loudest laughter with Harley Breen and the ever popular Melbourne Comedy Festival; poignant and thought provoking theatre with Goodbye Jamie Boyd and Jack Charles V the Crown brought to us by the oldest Indigenous Theatre Company in Australia.

If some of our program is a little out there for you, the Matt Dann Cultural Centre team encourages you to trust in the choices we have made, take a risk, step out of your comfort zone and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by the experience.

Talking about experience during 2013, yours will be greatly enhanced by the technical upgrade to the theatre that is currently underway and due for completion in May this year. What you will notice from our program is more performances and greater diversity as a result of the improvements to technical equipment. New lighting, a new screen and digital projector will all improve the quality of your theatre experience and we would like to acknowledge the Department of Education for their contribution to the upgrade equipment.

Mostly, the Matt Dann Cultural Centre team wants you to enjoy the simple experience of going to the theatre. Take up the opportunities to appreciate the diversity of the program we are offering in this, the most remote performing arts venue in Australia.

No matter what your age, background, academic record or clothing label...we welcome you all!

WELCOME

Sticks, Stones,BROKEN BONES

By Bunk Puppets

Hailing from Montreal, Canada artist Jeff Achtem, aka Mr. Bunk, is an eccentric poet who transforms everyday junk into surreal shadow puppets: Flying Ninjas, UFO abductions and brain transplants just to name a few!

While the shadows created are imaginative beyond words, it is their unassuming creator, (a man of very little words but a very comprehensive collection of sound effects), who will make you feel warm inside, harbouring expressions of joy like an excited child.

Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones is a wordless, shadow puppet comedy for all ages which transports children and adults alike into a giddy, funny dream world, a shadowy, bent take on Warner Brother’s wackiness.

In each scene the audience is invited behind the visual trickery, to witness the making of the shadow puppet melodramas.

Come and play in the dark!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

By Black Swan State Theatre CompanyLive broadcast from Perth’s State Theatre Centre

“In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing.” Oscar Wilde

In Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, the dandy Algernon and dapper Jack are best friends, who, unbeknownst to each other, both employ different identities in London and the countryside.

When Jack proposes to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, and Algernon falls for Jack’s ward Cecily, both do so using the pseudonym Ernest. Amidst mistaken identities and giddy confusion towers Gwendolen’s mother, the imposing Lady Bracknell, as a paragon of Victorian propriety, who refuses to be anything but earnest!

This masterful comedy of manners, considered to be the wittiest play in the English language, sparkles with classic bon mots and brilliant dialogue that will lift your spirits.

FREEFALLBy Gravity & Other Myths

Freefall is circus theatre like no other in Australia. Beautifully constructed with sizzling skill and honest performances; it’s a completely captivating audience experience.

The artists combine traditional circus disciplines including hula hoop, juggling, adagio, hoop diving and acrobatic pitching with contemporary movement and physical theatre to develop a dynamic and innovative performance style.

Through spoken word and the unique physicality of each character, Freefall transcends the conventional concept of fear to show the deeper complexities and resulting everyday habits that fear evokes in us all.

Fears are hidden in the dark corners of every person’s life; some are rational but many subtle and unspoken. The inherent risk-taking and trust forming nature of high-level acrobatics is the perfect medium with which to explore these ideas. There is a palpable energy that this ensemble holds on stage, their presence and openness has charmed audiences of all ages.

ANIMAL FARMBy Shake & Stir Theatre Co

Originally produced in association with QPAC

Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries arrives in a brand new production combining physical theatre and storytelling. George Orwell’s simple yet intensely powerful fairy tale illustrates how greed and absolute power corrupts absolutely and, with devastating consequences, can change the course of history.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and under the principles of ‘Animalism’ a better life free from human service is promised to all. Guided by a simple set of rules and an unrelenting respect for authority, it is not long before until the rules that promised freedom become the chains that bind the animals once again.

Directed by Michael Futcher and brought to life by shake & stir theatre co and a cast of Queensland’s most dynamic actors, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events in 2013.

GOODBYEJAMIE BOYD

By Buzz Dance Theatre

Anna and Jamie Boyd are inseparable, the brother and sister team who face the world together. Their love for each other is bigger than anything else they know and stronger than any ordinary bond. When Anna Boyd kills her brother, what follows next is a revelation to all, most especially to Anna.

Anna’s struggle with schizophrenia and the need to prove her love to Jamie leads her to punish herself through self-harm. She eventually confides in her art class where she receives the support and friendship she so desperately needs.

Goodbye Jamie Boyd is a powerful multi-artform show that tackles confronting issues of mental illness and its ripple effects.

JACK CHARLES V THE CROWNBy ILBIJERRI Theatre Company

Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian legend: veteran actor, musician, Koori elder and activist, but for a good portion of his nearly 70 years he has also been an addict, a thief and a regular in Victoria’s prisons.

From Stolen Generation to Koori theatre in the 70s, from film sets to Her Majesty’s prisons, Jack Charles V The Crown runs the gamut of a life lived to its utmost. Charles’ unswerving optimism transforms this tale of addiction, crime and doing time into a kind of vagabond’s progress – a map of the traps of dispossession and a guide to reaching the age of grey-haired wisdom.

Accompanied by a three-piece band, this one man show is a theatrical delight and a celebration of one of the country’s near forgotten treasures. Jack Charles V The Crown brought to us by the oldest Indigenous theatre company in Australia.

HARLEY BREENI HEART BUNNINGS

By Dirty Work Comedy

8am, Sunday morning.Q: What’s wrong? A: You’re not at Bunnings.

It’s the ultimate man‐shed. Two acres of timber, tools and trellises, guaranteed to make your man‐ovaries ache. It’s a fantasy supermarket where dreams and wobbly bookshelves are made.

Harley Breen has two brothers, they’re both carpenters. He likes going to Bunnings to look at things he could make if they were around to fix them.

Perhaps this is Bunnings’ great, dark secret: no one there knows what the hell they’re doing! It is the perfect place to wander around and feel like you’ve got the skills and materials to nail your shit together.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE....In addition to our 2013 Theatre Season, we are in discussion to bring a range of other performances and events to our venue. Once they are confirmed, we will promote the details through our normal marketing channels. Keep an eye out on the following shows!

Cave to the Rave A Comedy DanceathonBy Damian Callinan

Cave To The Rave takes us from the earthen floor of prehistoric man to the polished parquetry of modern dance with a few side steps and knee slides along the way. It’s a dance class for comedy beginners, intermediate and advanced.

By the end of the lesson you will have learnt why it’s not a good idea to crowd surf at a wiggles concert; understand just why women dance in a circle around their hand bags and find out whyJesus was eliminated in controversial circumstances from ‘Dancing With The Stars.’

So strap your dance card to your wrist, pop on your leg warmers and find a partner and come and see the show - Come on, don’t be a wallflower!

Australian String QuartetThe ASQ has had a major impact on the musical life of Australia, touring widely to capital centres

and regional communities and commissioning many works by leading Australian composers. One

of Australia’s finest music exports, the Quartet has appeared at international music festivals and

toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand and Asia in recent years.

The Australian String Quartet hopes to make it Port Hedland in June this year.

Boats

Boats is a story of two mariners fleeing their past and embracing adventure. They meet through bizarre circumstances involving a chicken, a deserted island and a sombrero. Boats is classic storytelling where the magic unfolds in front the audience. The sound effects are created live, a boat is cut from bread, a bird tied from rope, a circus hides in a jacket, and finally a storm is made with a teacup. Boats has acrobatics, object manipulation, a microphone that goes in water and enchanting story telling. It is a moving story that leaves a lump in your throat and a smile on your face.

Scent TalesScent Tales is the bittersweet story of a baker and her sister inspired by an ancient fable from Middle Eastern storyteller Nasruddin Hodja. An eccentric and hilarious narrator weaves a tale about Bea’s deep seated jealousy of her sister which results in an incredible accusation: Bea accuses Sanji of stealing the delicious smells from her bakery and takes her to court. Scent Tales uses wit, puppetry and poetry to tell a tale of memory, sensory intrigue and a recipe for Love Bread that brings the baker to her senses.

Melbourne Ballet CompanyInfinite Space is a breathtaking example of classical dance re-interpreted to inspire both new and loyal ballet audiences. It will entrance audiences as it takes them on a choreographic journey through four acclaimed and original works, all bought to life by a uniquely talented dance ensemble.

ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCETheatre for everyoneAt the Matt Dann Cultural Centre, our mission is to harness the power of the performing arts to enrich our community. We aim to break down the “fourth wall” on the stage by bringing experiences to people of all ages and access to some of the most talented national and international artists.

Audience engagementWe break down the “fourth wall” by engaging with our audience outside of the theatre. Ways we did this during last season included facilitating workshops in the community for the shows such as Scooby Circus Show, Gene Peterson, Deep Blue Orchestra, Shiver and Treasure Island.

Some of you might have been involved with the creation of lost notices or taking part in the video where you shared your experiences of loss. These stories were captured by the Shiver audience engagement team and renowned local artist Di Boyd.

The video was shown prior to the Shiver contemporary dance performance and the lost notices were displayed around town and at the venue.

2013 AUDIENCEENGAGEMENTEducation programIn breaking down the “fourth wall”, the Matt Dann Cultural Centre has a focus on youth programming. We believe in giving young people the opportunity to experience exceptional theatre, and we hope this will inspire a passion that will last a lifetime.

In 2013, we will bring dedicated performances and workshops designed to allow children and young people to explore their creative side.

Our program is developed to support teachers and youth agencies by creating unique opportunities to enhance young people’s learning and provide an access point into the world of performing arts. Schools and youth agencies taking part in our program will have access to educational resources.

WorkshopsThroughout 2013, a range of free workshops for the community including many for young people will take place at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre and around town. More details will be available closer to the events and will be promoted through our regular marketing channels.
