Welcome to the department - Caitlyn Nguyen, M.D. Caitlyn Nguyen, M.D., joined the faculty at the KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency Program at Smoky Hill-Salina on March 1. Dr. Nguyen grew up in Liberal, Kansas, graduating first in her high school class. She graduated with distinction in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in human biology from the University of Kansas. Dr. Nguyen graduated from KU School of Medicine in Kansas City in 2013 and completed her family medicine residency training at Truman Medical Center – Lakewood in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2016. While in residency, Dr. Nguyen and some resident colleagues formed the integrative medicine track and geriatric medicine track for their program. After residency, Dr. Nguyen moved back to Kansas to start her practice. From 2019-2021, she practiced in Independence and Manhattan, Kansas, until accepting her new position at Smoky Hill. “I love the diversity and the breadth that family medicine offers. Having been practicing on my own after residency, I really missed teaching and being in a learning environment. I’m really looking forward to sharing my experience as well as learning from my colleagues,” stated Dr. Nguyen regarding her new role. We are excited to have Dr. Nguyen join the residency faculty at Smoky Hill-Salina!

Medical students participate in skin screening clinic for Wesley employees Six MS4 medical students participated in a free skin screening clinic for Wesley Medical Center employees between Feb. 17-24. The students were rotating on the family medicine Dermatological Disease in Primary Care elective with lead faculty Tessa Rohrberg, M.D. They screened 112 Wesley employees at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital and at Wesley Medical Center. Of those employees screened, 37 were referred to a dermatologist and four were told to make an appointment within the next two to four weeks.

The annual JayDoc Community Clinic fundraiser took place virtually this year with a silent auction that ran from March 15-20. Proceeds were used to provide pneumovax vaccines to the high-risk uninsured patients of the JayDoc Community Clinic. Previously, when the fundraiser was an in-person event, it was also a time to recognize the work and effort of all the students on the JayDoc Community Clinic executive board who organize the volunteer efforts of medical students, pharmacy students, premedical students and area physicians to run the clinic. Award winners this year were Mary Horban, premedical student of the year; Connor Bowman, MS4; Holly Burt, MS3; Jon Hogge, MS2; Tiffany Killblane, MS2; Jack Harrigan, MS1; Sarah Veesart, MS1; Bliss Baird, MS1; Tumi Osunsanmi, P4; Bertha De Los Santos, P3; Scott Langenegger, P3; Dylan Moore, P2; Lupe Fraire, P1, outstanding student volunteers; Pie Pichetsurnthorn, M.D., PGY2 and Yasmine Agha, M.D., PGY2, outstanding resident physician volunteers;

Susan King, Pharm.D., pharmacist volunteer of the year; and Lisa Gilbert, M.D., Ascension Via Christi, and Chloe McBride, M.D., physician volunteers of the year. More information about the JayDoc Community Clinic can be found at wichita.kumc.edu/jaydoc-community-clinic. Donations are still being accepted at kuendowment.org/jaydoc_wichita.

COVID-19 did not stop the FMIG from presenting Dark Vapor to students in the Wichita area. The curriculum, which was developed last year by two KUSM-W medical students, Tori Farwell, MS3, and Laura Vanderheiden, MS3, was presented virtually by 14 medical students to 350 middle school and elementary school students. Last year, the FMIG received an AAFP Family Medicine Student Organization Special Grant to expand the Dark Vapor program and to fund the purchase of pig lungs to demonstrate the effects of smoking. Farwell had this to say about this year’s Dark Vapor presentations: “The lungs were a success! The kids loved the demonstration. There were some challenges getting the camera just right so the students could see them. Hopefully next year we can get back in-person so the kids can see them up close! We have two different sets of pig lungs. One set of lungs represents a smoker with a 20-pack-a-year history, and the other set represents a nonsmoker. For the demonstration we used a pump to fill the lungs with air. With the lungs side by side we were able to show how the smoker’s lungs, discolored from tar deposition, did not fully expand.”

Preceptor Spotlight GREATER WICHITA AREA—Scott Hane, M.D., in Andover, Kansas Scott Hane, M.D., is an active and consistent preceptor for the Family Medicine Clerkship, training 25 medical students in the past 19 years. In 1992, he received his Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at Kansas State University. In his fourth year of medical school, he served as vice president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and was the recipient of the Leadership Award in Family Medicine. As a first-year resident, Dr. Hane was the recipient of the DFCM Apple Award for teaching medical students. Dr. Hane graduated in 1999 from the KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency Program at Ascension Via Christi. In his spare time, he enjoys home restoration and gardening along with staying active by playing softball, tennis and weightlifting. Here’s what students had to say about their time with Dr. Scott Hane: “Dr. Hane was an exceptional community preceptor. From the first day of clinic, I felt like I was a welcome

addition to the team. I was allowed to see patients on my own, participate in completion of in-office procedures, and offer suggestions for ordering tests and imaging studies. It was obvious that Dr. Hanes’ patients greatly value his knowledge, skill and demeanor as a physician.” “I would consider myself successful if I one day become as knowledgeable, patient, humble and personable as Dr. Hane.” “Dr. Hane was a phenomenal preceptor. He always ensured that I was comfortable within my role on the health care team. He provided me ample opportunities to interview patients, evaluate problems, assist with office procedures and create treatment plans. Dr. Hane always had constructive feedback for me regarding my examinations and plans. Additionally, he took time to thoroughly consider my plans and question my reasoning to deepen my understanding.” “He was amazing. I learned more in the last eight weeks with him than in all else in my medical career.”

FEATURED RURAL SITE —Burlington, Kansas, with John Shell, M.D.; Jon Sides, M.D.; and Jeff Sloyer, M.D. Jon Sides, M.D., and Jeff Sloyer, M.D., graduated from KUSM-W in 2001 and completed their residency training at KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency Program at Smoky Hill-Salina in 2004. In 2004, they joined fellow KUSM alumnus, John Shell, M.D., in practice at Coffey Health Systems located in Burlington. Both Dr. Sides and Dr. Sloyer became preceptors for KU School of Medicine-Wichita shortly after beginning their practice. Dr. Shell began precepting medical students in 1993. Since 2016, the preceptors in Burlington have had 68 medical students from KUSM rotate with them. Burlington is a popular request among students due to the robust and meaningful clinical experiences provided by Drs. Shell, Sides and Sloyer. Dr. Shell has served as chief of staff at Coffey Health System since 2003. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in biology at William Jewel College in 1984, he attended medical school at the University of Kansas and completed his internship and residency at KUSM-KC. He was a finalist for the 2008 Rainbow Award from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Sides was chief resident at Smoky Hill from 2003-2004 and was the recipient of the AAFP Bristol Meyers Squibb Award in 2003. As a medical student, Dr. Sides served as vice president of the KUSM-W Family Medicine Interest Group from 2000-2001 and was the recipient of

the Conrad Osborne, M.D., Award for Excellence in Family Medicine in 2001. He was also the student representative to the KAFP board of directors from 1999-2000 and the resident representative from 2001-2004. In his free time, Dr. Sides is on the board of directors of Tokai-Juku Karate and has been a third-degree black belt in Okinawan GoJu-Ryu since 1992. Prior to medical school, Dr. Sloyer completed his undergraduate degree at Wichita State University. He performed two semesters of biology research that included separating and combining alpha and beta subunits of FSH, LH, hCG and GH. In 2000, he was the recipient of the Donatelle Family Medicine Award. When asked what he enjoys most about being a preceptor, Dr. Shell responded, “The students really help keep me up-to-date and remind me of my great time at KUSM as a student. It’s very enjoyable interacting with them and feeling the excitement they have for the newness in most everything they do. I hope that I can give them a look into the rural medicine way of life and how much I enjoy what I do.” Dr Sides reflects, “I am excited to have students because they bring new energy and excitement, always wanting to see and do things because everything is new to them. My patients also expect a student and will ask when the next one will be here so they can help train them.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?Donald Nease, M.D., vice chair for community medicine at the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine

Donald Nease, M.D., graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts in 1983 and from KUSM-W in 1987. He completed his residency training in 1990 at the Medical University of South Carolina program. He is currently the vice chair for community medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has over 136 publication credits and in 2020 received the North American Primary Care Research Group Presidents Award. Dr. Nease’s true passion is the Balint Society. According to the American Balint Society, “a Balint group is a group of clinicians, often physicians, who meet regularly to present clinical cases in order to improve and to better understand the clinician-patient relationship. While physicians are usually trained to seek the ‘right’ answer to medical problems, in a Balint group, the focus is on enhancing the clinician’s ability to connect with and care for the patient.” Dr. Nease explained, “My first exposure to Balint groups came in the summer of 1987, as I began my residency training in family medicine at the Medical

University of South Carolina in Charleston. I was intrigued by the group work as I had been trained as a peer support group facilitator in medical school at KUSM, so I jumped in with a great deal of curiosity.” Dr. Nease went on to serve as president of the American Balint Society from 2007-2008 and vice president of the International Balint Federation from 2007-2013. In 2013, he was elected president of the International Balint Federation, a role he will continue through 2021. When asked, “What did your time at KU School of Medicine-Wichita mean to you?,” Dr. Nease responded, “I appreciated that the preceptors valued the pursuit of primary care. They made me feel like I was part of the team and had a willingness to bring us alongside them. It was very hands-on. I was doing dictation within the first few days with my preceptor.” Dr. Nease recalls during his residency, “When I went on my first overnight shift, the other residents discovered that I was able to do deliveries due to my OB rotation experience in Wichita.”

One Day. One KU. The fourth annual “One Day. One KU. Day of Giving” was Feb. 18. The Department of Family & Community Medicine-Wichita raised $52,810 and these gifts were matched by an anonymous donor, bringing the total to $105,620. This was the most successful day of giving for the DFCM and surpassed the previous year by over $25,000. We thank all our benefactors for their generous donations to further the mission of the DFCM to serve the citizens of Kansas. Information on ways to support Family & Community Medicine can be found at wichita.kumc.edu/family-and-community-medicine/support-family-and-community-medicine.

Global Health Day Residents from KUSM-W Family Medicine (Ascension Via Christi and Wesley) and the pediatrics residency program came together for an afternoon of lectures on topics pertinent to global health for the fourth annual KUSM-W Global Health Day which took place virtually on Feb. 23. Over 90 medical students, residents, and volunteer and paid faculty were in attendance. Speakers included Jessica Evert, M.D., executive director of Child Family Health International and faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco; Josh McCoy, M.D., a 2019 Via Christi graduate who completed his International Fellowship at Via Christi and now practices in Washington state; Jeff Markuns, M.D., Ed.M., executive director of the Global Health Collaborative in the Department of Family Medicine at Boston University; and Nicholas Comninellis, M.D., MPH, DIMPH, dean and president of the Institute for International Medicine.

Fresh from FM RADIO (Family Medicine Research and Data, Information and Outcomes) The DFCM manages an electronic practice-based research network (PBRN) comprised of family physicians throughout the State of Kansas who are KUSM-Wichita family medicine residency program graduates, community and full-time faculty and resident-physicians called FM RADIO (Family Medicine Research and Data, Information and Outcomes). These physicians have volunteered to participate in electronic surveys with the understanding that minimal demands will be made on their time; only questions that are highly relevant to practicing family physicians are asked. Surveys are concise and usually take only three to five minutes to complete. Results of the surveys are shared with FM RADIO participants and many are published in national journals. A regular column will be published in the FMR to provide a variety of survey results from department research. A study using the results of a FM RADIO study is currently in press with the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine. A total of 113 family physicians in Kansas completed an anonymous, 18-item survey assessing family physicians’ concerns about being exposed to COVID-19, levels of personal depression, anxiety, stress and burnout, and demographic information. There was a 45.6% response rate, with 50.4% (n=57) of the respondents reporting manifestations of burnout. The physicians who personally treated a presumptive or confirmed COVID-19 patient, compared to those who did not, were more likely to report at least one manifestation of burnout, experience emotional exhaustion and feel a higher level of personal stress. The findings demonstrate that the COVID-19 pandemic may be taking an emotional toll on family physicians in Kansas. This study provides a baseline from which to continue further monitoring of burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress, to determine the need for interventions, and influence the implementation of programs to support physician wellness. The full abstract can be viewed at jabfm.org/content/how-are-family-physicians-kansas-responding-covid-19-pandemic. If you are interested in joining the FM RADIO practice-based research network or would like more information about utilizing FM RADIO for your survey needs, please contact DFCM research faculty Samuel Ofei-Dodoo, Ph.D., MPA, M.A., CPH, at [email protected] or Kari Nilsen, Ph.D., at [email protected].
