• Daniil Medvedev returns to action this evening after winning his first Roland Garros match on the 5th attempt on Monday, with the No. 2 seed facing Tommy Paul in the night session on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Russian had reached the final at 2 different Grand Slam tournaments before he managed to win a match at Roland Garros, but he looked comfortable in victory over Alexander Bublik in the 1st round. But former Roland Garros boys’ singles champion Paul is in good form, having enjoyed a run to the semifinals at Parma last week, and he will be determined to record his first victory against a Top 5 player and score upset the world No. 2 tonight.

• No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev battled back from 0-2 down to defeat qualifier Oscar Otte in the 1st round on Sunday, maintaining his unbeaten record against qualifiers at the majors – and his 2nd round match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen today sees him take on another qualifier, world No. 182 Roman Safiullin. Zverev and Safiullin have never contested a Tour-level match – but they met 3 times as juniors within the space of a month during the 2013 clay court season. Zverev won all 3 of their junior-level matches in straight sets, including a victory in the boys’ singles here, and will hope for further success against the Russian today.

• World No. 177 Enzo Couacaud is the only Frenchman in action today. He faces a challenging encounter against experienced campaigner Pablo Carreno Busta on Court Simonne-Mathieu today. Couacaud recorded his first Tour-level victory in the 1st round on Sunday, but will have to play a superb match if he is to defeat Carreno Busta. The Spaniard reached the quarterfinals here for the 2nd time last year and has continued his good form into 2021, winning his 5th Tour-level singles title on clay at Marbella in April. Carreno Busta is also bidding to extend an 11-match winning streak against wild cards at Tour-level.

• The 2nd match on Court 7 today sees Casper Ruud, of Norway, up against Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, with No. 15 seed Ruud aiming to reach the 3rd round for the 3rd straight year and equal his best Roland Garros performance. Both Ruud and Majchrzak are beneficiaries of the Grand Slam Development Fund’s International Player Grand Slam Grant programme, which aims to support players from developing tennis nations, enabling them to compete at the highest level. Ruud is now firmly among the sport’s elite players, having broken the world’s Top 20 earlier this year, while Majchrzak, who is aiming to become the first Polish man to reach the 3rd round here in 7 years, is edging closer to a return to the world’s Top 100 after struggling with injury in 2020.

• Medvedev advanced to the 2nd round after defeating Alexander Bublik 63 63 75 in the 1st round on Monday for his first Roland Garros match-win.

• Last year here, as No. 4 seed, Medvedev fell to Marton Fucsovics in 4 sets in the 1st round. He lost in the 1st round on all 4 of his previous appearances here - on his debut here in 2017 when he retired due to cramping in the 4th set of his match against wild card Benjamin Bonzi, and in both 2018 (l. Lucas Pouille) and 2019 (l. Pierre-Hugues Herbert).

• Medvedev reached his 2nd Grand Slam final at the Australian Open this year, where he fell to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The defeat ended a 20-match winning streak, which had seen Medvedev win the titles at 2020 Paris-1000, the 2020 ATP Finals, and win all 4 singles matches he contested at the 2021 ATP Cup. He also finished runner-up at the 2019 US Open, where he fell to Rafael Nadal in 5 sets.

• Medvedev’s other highlights in 2021 are winning his 10th Tour-level title at Marseille (d. Herbert) and leading Russia to victory at the ATP Cup, with the team defeating Italy in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals at Miami-1000 (l. Roberto Bautista Agut).

• Medvedev is bidding to record his 2nd clay court match-win of the 2021 season. His only match-win on clay this year came at Madrid-1000, where he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before falling to Cristian Garin. He lost his opening match at Rome-1000, falling to Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. His victory over Davidovich Fokina was his first match-win on clay since he defeated Kei Nishikori in the semifinals at 2019 Barcelona and ended a 6-match clay court losing streak.

• Medvedev’s best results on clay are reaching the final at 2019 Barcelona (l. Dominic Thiem) and the semifinals at 2019 Monte Carlo-1000 (l. Dusan Lajovic). He has an 11-20 win-loss record on clay – compared to 150-59 on hard courts and 18-12 on grass.

• Medvedev recorded his first victory in a 5-set match at the Australian Open this year, defeating Filip Krajinovic in 5 sets in the 3rd round. He has a 1-7 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall and lost the only 5-set match he has contested at Roland Garros, to Herbert in the 1st round in 2019.

• Medvedev rose to a career-high ranking of No. 2 on 15 March, becoming the first player other than Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Murray to have been ranked inside the Top 2 since Lleyton Hewitt was ranked No. 2 in July 2005. He plays here at the same ranking.
