Mata Ortiz Potters Map

Welcome to Mata Ortiz! This guide will help you locate the numerous potters living within the village and has

been made possible with the help of some of the artists and others living in the village. It is available on-line

and can be printed. If you know the name of the person you are seeking, chances are it can be found here.

Most potters work out of their homes. Visitors are welcome so just show up and do not hesitate to knock on

doors or ask questions. Most artists have a good sampling of finished items available as well as works in

progress. Spend a little time and you will be able to see the steps required to produce these works of art. The

clays used are gathered locally then cleaned, shaped, painted, fired, and polished. Every step is done by hand.

Mata Ortiz is divided into six “barrios”, or neighborhoods. The boundaries between barrios are informal and

not marked. The following map pages are presented by barrio while all potters are contained within one

overall listing. Each name in the listing is associated with a three-digit location code. The first number in the

code identifies the barrio where the individual resides. The three-digit location code is listed next to the

residence on the map pages. If you are viewing this on your computer, this document is searchable. Use the

search utility built into your viewer to immediately locate any name or location code. If you have a paper copy,

you must manually look it up. Street signs are not common so be prepared to count blocks from your starting

point. Most roads are not paved but easily navigated.

Mata Ortiz has a thirty-five year history of creating fine ceramic arts. What started as designs based upon the

original Casas Grandes pots unearthed at Páquime and the surrounding hills has evolved into designs and

patterns unique to each artist. To best appreciate it all, try not to be in a rush.

I hope this guide is useful and makes your visit more enjoyable. We still have some unresolved names and

locations in the list and are working to resolve this. Comments, feedback, and corrections are welcomed either
