LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE JULY 24, 2016

Dear Parishioners, I had a very relaxing trip to North Carolina with my friends last week. Thanks again to the priests, staff and you all for keeping the parish afloat. The floor is complete in the Parish Center, though we are s ll awai ng the installa on of the air condi oner. And I now have an office. Tomorrow, July 25th, is the feast of St. James. It also happens to be my 31st birthday. (Yes, that's how I received the name.) Allow me to philoso-phize on birthdays, for I sense there is a connec on to our Gospel. We are a very pragma c, ra onal, and u litarian society. We also like to think we are a meritocracy. Which makes the popularity of celebra ng birth-days confounding. Think about it. What have you done on this day? You didn't choose to be born and you haven't earned anything, other than simply exis ng. It is not like a gradua on or a promo on. Yet we spend me and money (and calories) cele-bra ng a person. Why? Because a birthday is a way of singling out this one par cular individual on this one par cular day of the en re year and saying effec vely, "you are significant." A birthday party or card or gree ng is a way for us to shower this person with extra love and a en on, affirming to him/her (and to us) that the birthday boy/girl is meaningful. Birthdays are, arguably, the most human of all celebra ons. The day is about love and kindness. And some mes

love and kindness cannot be parsed out according to pragma sm and logic. I think our Lord was hi ng on something similar when he gave the very imprac cal piece of wisdom: "For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened" (Lk 11:10). It is counter-produc ve to constantly ask, for the more we ask, the less will people take us seriously and the less will they heed our requests. Furthermore, if we're always seeking, surely there will be things we don't find. I suppose. And yet Jesus wants us to ask. (The challenge is to ask for the right thing. See my Tassel column this week.) Like birthdays, asking and seeking and knocking are very human ac vi es. We make ourselves vulnerable. We give our neigh-bor a chance to embrace our vulnerability. When our neighbor does--that is, when he gives what we asked for--our neighbor has essen ally said to us, "Happy Birthday!" because our neighbor has recog-nized that we are meaningful and worthy of this request. "Happy Birthday" is another way of say-ing, "I love you!" Even if you don't have a birthday coming up, allow me to say to all of you from the bo om of my heart: happy birthday! Have a blessed week. Yours in Christ, Father James

THE TASSEL OF THE CLOAK James F. Wallace Sigrid Undset won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1928 for her novel Kris n Lavransda er. The epic takes place in medieval Norway and covers the life of the tle character. Kris n is a complicated woman, deeply religious and virtuous on the one hand and rebellious and brooding on the other. She experiences both blessings and tragedies. There are many insigh ul passages in the story, including this here: Not many women her age, now close to half a century, enjoyed such good health; that was something she no ced on her way through the mountains. Lord, if only you would give me this and this and this, then I will thank you and ask for nothing more except for this and this and this... Surely she had never asked God for anything except that He should let her have her will. And every me she had been granted what she asked for - for the most part. Now here she sat with a con-trite heart--not because she had sinned against God but because she was unhappy that she had been allowed to follow her will to the road's end. (1071) Quality novels, such as this, Brothers Karamazov and Lord of the Rings, to name only a couple, I would consider spiritual reading. They contain profound messages. Here we see the nuance of God's generosity. "Ask and you shall receive" was fulfilled for Kris n. But it did not make her happy. What we want is not always what is best for us. What is best for us is God's will. So perhaps we should ask, as Kris n discovered towards the end of her life, that our Lord's will be done.

Will You Join Us?... Every morning Monday through Friday at 6:00am in the in CHURCH (until Mass re-sumes) in the chapel and 8:00am in church on Satur-days we say the rosary. We pray for the needs of the Church, the Pope, clergy and reli-gious, for sinners everywhere, for all suffering souls as well as those in Purgatory. We are parishioners re-sponding to the needs of others as well as our own.

WORDS THE MISERICORDIA HEARTZINGERS LIVE BY: TRUE, KIND, NECESSARY

On Sunday, June 27th at the 10:30am Mass the Micericordia Choir, the Heartzingers, touched our hearts with songs of praise from their solos at the prelude to the final blessing of the Mass. The Heartzingers not only sang with their upli ing voices but also the beau ful, expressive language of signing. We look forward to having them return next year. Please keep all the members of the Misericordia Family in your prayers. Pictures on page 5.

SAINT JULIANA MISSIONARY SPIRIT TEAM HELPS MISERICORDIA CANDY DAYS

Once again our Missionary Spirit Team is out helping others. In April they worked the corner of Devon and Harlem along with other volun-teers on behalf of the Brennan Family for Misericordia’s Candy Days. Over $6,000. was collected. The weather was the most challenging but what a reward-ing and humbling experience. A story worth telling... The MST parked in the bank parking lot that Saturday morning and met up with a kind and generous man who was going to the bank to have his change counted. What do you suppose happened next? You guessed it he turned it over to our team for Misericordia! Volunteers tell us me and again they receive more than they give. It is good for your soul. What a blessing! Thank you once again for your example of WORKS OF MERCY.

Relax and stay cool. Sit in the shade and read a good book...a scripture passage perhaps! “Come to me all of you who are red from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will give you is light.”
