LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE

Dear Parishioners, I don't know about you, but I'm a neat freak. I'm very organized and I look to de-clu er and simplify whenever and wherev-er I can.

The Gospel this week thus resonates with me. There were over 600 laws in the Torah. Some laws were good and neces-sary, like "Do not oppress the weak" (Law 18). Some laws were not so essen al, like "Do not bow down before a smooth stone" (Law 51). Some I wish were s ll laws, like "Men must not shave their beards with a razor" (Law 69).

Jesus acts like a neat freak here. He reduces the code to two laws. "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Ma 22:37-40).

Complexity and clu er can lead to confusion and anxiety. Some of us know

that be er than others. It can be stressful to not know where things are or to live amidst chaos. Christ is the great simplifier. We don't need to worry about fulfilling 613 laws, only two. And they're pre y easy laws, in my mind: love God and love your neighbor.

How simple the path to peace and ease!

Stop by the parking lot today, Sunday, at 2pm for Trunk or Treat, hosted by the SJS Parent Ambassadors. You might see your pastor in a Halloween costume. Other-wise, I hope to see some trick or treaters at the rectory!

Because of Halloween, there will be no Tuesday Night Theology session this week. We will resume next week, November 7th, with a talk on Mary.

Wednesday, November 1st is All Saints’ Day, a holy day of obliga on. All the Masses that day (7am, 8:30pm, 7pm) will be in the church. Our school students will be in a endance at the 8:30am Mass and our Religious Educa on stu-dents will be in a endance at the 7pm Mass. The next day, Thurs-day, is All Souls’ Day. The 7am and 8:30am Mass will be in the chapel, as usual, and we will have a special Mass at 7pm in the church celebra ng all the deceased from our parish who have died this past year. We especially invite the family members of all the de-ceased to a end this Mass, as your loved one's name will be read off and a candle lit in memoriam. Please see in-side this bulle n issue a list of all the deceased.

On Friday we will host adora on in the church from 9am-9pm. Please stop in to pray and sign up for a me slot, if you haven’t already. Going forward, we will hold all-day adora on on the first Friday of each month.

Five hundred years ago on October 31st, Mar n Luther posted his 95 theses on the cathedral door at Wi enburg, thus commencing the Reforma on. The origins of the Reforma on can be traced to well before this event, however, and an important figure in this movement was a fellow by the name of Erasmus of Ro erdam. Without Erasmus Luther could not have arisen. Erasmus translated the New Testament into Greek and cri qued the sumptuous lifestyle of the clergy, especially of the papacy, in his sa re, The Praise of Folly. He wrote about "the philosophy of Christ", exhor ng popes and all Chris ans, for that ma er, to imitate Christ's poverty, tasks, teachings, crosses, and so on. He wrote, "Make Christ the only goal of your life. Dedicate to him all your enthusiasm, all your effort, your leisure as well as your business. And don't look upon Christ as a mere word, as an empty expression, but rather as charity, simplicity, pa ence, and purity—in short, in terms of everything he has taught us."

Erasmus challenged the church to a deeper devo on to Jesus Christ, the Jesus of the Gospels. He also saw an intrinsic connec on between the humani es and religion. Jesus helps us understand culture, and it is through culture that we gain deeper insight into our Lord. It is the principle upon which these Tassel of the Cloak ar cles are based. Without Erasmus, we would not have the image of Jesus that we have today.

The difference between Erasmus and Luther was that Erasmus stayed faithful to the Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ. Erasmus died in 1536, receiving the Last Rites and Via cum from a Catholic priest and with the words on his lips, "O Jesus, have mercy. Lord, deliver me." Rev. James Wallace

CHRIST IN CHICAGO REFLECTIONS FROM ST. JULIANA PARISHIONERS

In the early 1990s, I was in the midst of a futures trading career and I decided to a end daily Mass for a Lenten season. Once Lent was over I decided to keep this daily rou ne, but before long I was hi ng the snooze bu on and daily Mass was no longer. A er a few months of feeling like there was something missing, I realized it was the Eucharist , the Daily Bread. I commi ed to return to this rou ne. My trading career began to soar and I found myself making the type of money I had always dreamed about. I was on an eleven year run of country club living, Disney vaca ons, and watching Chicago Bulls championships, when all of a sudden I hit a brick wall in my career. I started losing money at a solid clip. Through this difficult me my mornings of daily Mass and Eucharist remained constant. One morning I recall praying to God something like, “Father, what’s going on? Why are you pu ng me through this trial? I don’t know how to do this. Please Help me!” As I was praying, I no ced a prayer card in the pew: Say this prayer every day and mean every word and Jesus will change your life. I thought, “Great, I’ll start saying this prayer and I’ll start making money again.” This prayer is called the “Miracle Prayer.”

It didn’t take too long to figure out that our Lord’s plan was very different. In a very short me, I found myself working at St. Patrick High School and the odd thing was, although my wife and I were barely making enough to survive with four young children and Catholic school educa on, I found myself happier and more fulfilled than I had ever been.

I have con nued to say that prayer every day and I find that the promise at the bo om of the prayer card con nues to ring true. Jesus is con nuing to change my life in profound and powerful ways. I have recently started a new job as an administrator at a new school, Northridge Prep. I love my job and am excited to go to work every day, knowing that I am exactly where God wants me to be right now. If you would like Jesus to change your life in a profound way I highly recommend more frequent recep on of the Holy Eucharist, along with the Miracle Prayer. It’s pre y much a guarantee. READING I: EXODUS 22:20-26

Thus says the LORD: "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.

"If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extor oner toward him by demanding interest from him. If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate."

REAPONSORIAL PSALM: 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51

“I love you, Lord, my strength.”

The first reading underlines the call of the men in Israel to care for three groups of vulnerable people: women, orphans, and aliens. In those mes, women depended on their fathers, husbands, and sons to care for them. If they lost their father or husband and had no sons, they were o en reduced to begging for a living. Orphans were children with no legal male guardians. The alien referred not only to those who were passing through the land, but also those who had no rela ves. In the second reading, we find Paul in Thessalonica, a thriving crossroad city in the Roman Empire. As a result of Paul’s anointed preaching, a dynamic Chris an community is established and nurtured. In fact, this small Chris an community becomes a wonderful example for many others, a model for all believers in Macedonia and Achaia. In the Gospel, the Pharisees have an expert in the law raise the ques on fre-quently asked of rabbis in those days: “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus’s answer combines two quota ons from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Levi cus 19:18. Jesus and the Pharisee do not dispute the importance of the law. Their disagreement has to do with emphasis. The Pharisees, who tend to be legalis c, un-derscore compliance to the law. In contrast, Jesus places emphasis on love. For Jesus, love of God and people is more important than obedience to the law. —Deacon Robinson Or z

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. On Friday, October 13th the sixth graders par ci-pated in a Bible recep on ceremony during an all school Mass. A er the Bibles were blessed, each student received a personal Bible to use through-out the year as the class con nues to learn more about the Sacred Scriptures. The Bibles will be re-minders of God’s constant love and presence in their daily lives.

TUESDAY THEOLOGY SEMINARS

CCD NEWS Our St Juliana religious educa on program is off to a running start. Our 6th year students received their Bi-bles at our recent CCD Welcome Mass, so that they may read and reflect on the Word as they begin their two-year journey to Confirma on. Please keep them in your prayers.

This year, all classes will a end a Eucharist-focused teaching Mass with one of our parish priests to deepen their understanding of the rites and rituals of our faith.

Our family liturgy for November will be hosted by all parish families with 7th graders. Please join us on No-vember 5 for the 9:30am Mass and, a erward, for fel-lowship in the church.

HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS Trinity High School is thrilled to host its annual “Ladies Night Out” at the Blazer Bou que on Thursday, November 2nd from 5:30-9pm in the Sister Michelle Germanson Athle c Facility, located at 7574 W. SERVICE St. Vincent DePaul Society St. Vincent DePaul Society will sponsor the St. Juliana Parish Annual Coat Drive November 4th/5th. Please bring any gently used coats or jackets you wish to donate to the ves bule of the church during the weekend Masses. All adult coats will go to Albany Care in Evanston. Albany Care is an intermediate care facility dedicated to the treatment and recovery of individuals suffering from chronic mental illness. Any children’s coats will go to the St. Vincent DePaul Chi-cago Headquarters in Schiller Park, which will then be distributed to various SVDP stores. The coats and jackets will need to be sorted. If you are able to give us a hand, we’d greatly appreciate it! Please join us on Monday, November 6th at 9:00am in the church ves bule. Men’s Club Our next mee ng will start promptly at 7:30pm on Monday, November 13. Fr. James will celebrate our annual Mass for deceased members. Snacks and re-freshments to follow. The Knights of Columbus will be hos ng their annual Seminarian Voca on Raffle Drive at all Masses, Oct. 28-29. The proceeds will be used to help three semi-narian students at St. Mary’s of the Lake with ex-penses. This year we are happy to assist the three seminarians affiliated with St. Juliana’s—Deacon Rob-inson Or z, Hank Lyon, and Joseph Mathews.
