Dear Parishioners,

We have sent out to all of our registered parishioners a postcard from your parish. It reminds you of how to get to our parish website and Facebook Page. It also gives a listing of all the Fall programs and events we will be having at the parish. Alpha is an introduction to Christianity. It is meant simply to introduce people to Jesus Christ and review the basic foundations of all Christian Churches. Sometimes people are shocked to hear that Catholics are Christians too. There is no obligation for attendance. Come to any or all of the meetings. Journey of Faith is an introduction to Catholicism. It is meant for Catholics who need a refresher course in the Faith, non-Catholics who desire to become Catholic, or non-Catholics who would simply like to be aware of what Catholics believe. While all are welcome to come and go as you please from September through November, in December we ask for a commitment from those who desire to become Catholic. Faith Formation is our program for school-aged children. Being such an unusual year, we have decided to focus on one important goal that will bear fruit for years to come: “To come to know and love Jesus.” Using a variety of methods, we hope to engage the students in a personal and tangible relationship with Jesus. It is guaranteed to be like no other year we’ve ever experienced! You won’t want to miss this 100-year opportunity! Disciples’ Formation is adult training in the Bible, Catechism, and the great Tradition of our Saints, Church Documents, and History. It is perfect for someone who is looking to grown in their knowledge of Catholicism. In addition, Tea With Jesus is an excellent Bible study course on Monday Mornings with Joni Smith. Missionary Childhood is a program designed to help children learn about Catholic children around the world and how they pray, live, and love Jesus. We sing, dance, have competitions, walk with Saints, and more. You’ll love it! Catholics Returning Back Home is designed to help with the healing process of those who have stopped practicing the Faith, but now are feeling the tug to return. We have never stopped praying for you. We love you and welcome you. We know that our mistakes and the human faults of the greater church often push people away. If you are ready to forgive, we are ready to reconcile. In addition, we have all kinds of community events, like our Feast Day Kickoff Concert, the Parish Feast Day Festival, the Blessing of the Animals, the Pro-Life Prayer Service, the Made for More Conference, and the dedication of our new Marian Grotto. For more information about the Fall programs and Events, please visit the parish website at SSCosmas-Damian.org. Know that all of our programs will be offered in person and online. We are reaching out to you! Please reach out to your friends and family, as well.

Saturday August, 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.

“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up

body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that

she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death. The Assumption of the Blessed

Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the

resurrection of other Christians.” -CCC 966

“Taken up into heaven, Mary shows us the way to God, the way to heaven, the way to life.”

-Pope St. John Paul II

Did you know that the Assumption of Mary is the fourth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary?

Pro-Life Lines When we see and hear about the violence and hate that is happening in our cities such as the burning of

buildings, the destruction of statues, and violence and hate to any who disagree with the rioters, we wonder can anything be worse for our country? As bad as all that violence is - the answer is....YES! The violence that is done to the unborn child everyday in this country for almost 50 years is far worse than anything we see on TV or hear about in the news. People will not even watch a baby as it is being aborted but they do

watch the violence in our country on TV. Why should we think that a society that endorses the killing of its unborn children with such violence that that violence would not spread to other segments of our society?

We have taught our children that life does not matter! Let us once again teach our children about the dignity of EVERY human life while we pray to end the worst of all violence -- abortion! Join me as we witness for life by our prayers at the Planned Parenthood in Bedford Hts on Saturday, 8/15/20, at 10:30am. If you have any questions, call Pam Pollack at (330)425-4081 or call the office at church.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Marian Grotto Groundbreaking! We will be doing a brief ground-breaking ceremony for our Marian grotto on the Feast of the Assumption, Saturday, August 15th right after the 4 pm Mass! (We plan to formally dedicate it on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.) Because of the COVID complications of social distancing, we cannot invite the whole parish to attend, which we would gladly do otherwise! Here’s what we’re doing instead:

* Each parish group leader has been invited to represent all of you in person at this event. * For those attending the 4 pm Mass on Saturday, we will invite them to remain seated, and we will live-stream the event on the white walls in the back of the sanctuary. All others will be able to watch via our parish Facebook page as we live stream, or watch it recorded afterwards.

Please continue to pray as this project moves forward. May God bless the work of our hands.

Protecting God's Children The Diocese of Cleveland's “Protecting God's

“There is no better preparation for Holy Communion other than offering it to the

Immaculate…She will prepare our heart in the best way possible, and we will be sure to give Jesus the greatest of joys and to show him the

greatest of loves. After Holy Communion let us pray to the

Immaculate once more, so that she herself may welcome Jesus into our soul and make him happy

as no one ever before has been able to do.”

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

SS. Cosmas and Damian—Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

Second Reading Romans 9:1—5

Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie: my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ. For the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

The word of the Lord All reply: thanks be to God

First Reading 1 Kings 19:9a, 11—13a

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the Lord said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord— but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

The word of the Lord All Reply: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm

Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims; the Lord—for he proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps.

Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

Gospel Matthew 14:22—23

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

The Gospel of the Lord All Reply: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow, up to and including, ‘and became man’, all bow. And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
