Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: A Blessed and Holy New Year to you all. Happy Feast of the Baptism of Our Blessed Lord, which we celebrate today. I hope things are beginning to settle down after this busy but very Holy Season. Peace to all of you and your families. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Harrigan Pastor

God the Father attests to the divinity of the Son at the moment of his baptism in the waters of the Jordan and, by this means, Jesus "manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him." (Jn 2:11) Jesus is Messiah. His eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power," "that he might be revealed to Israel" (Acts 10:38; Jn 1:31) as its Messiah. His works and words will manifest him as "the Holy One of God." (Mk 1:24; Jn 6:69; Acts 3:14) (CCC 438)

When he attained to the perfect age, when the time came for him to teach, to work miracles and to draw men to himself, then it was fitting for his Godhead to be attested from on high by the Father's testimony, so that his teaching might be the more credible . 'The Father who sent me has himself borne witness to me' (Jn 5:37) (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 39, a. 8 ad 3.) Our Lord's baptism, a sign only of his divinity, better enables us to understand our own reception of this great sacrament of initiation into Christian life and salvation. Baptism is a grace which we accept and in which we grow through a life of perseverance in prayer and worship in body, mind and spirit. ...after Baptism man needs to pray continually in order to enter heaven; for though sins are remitted through Baptism, there still remains the inclination to sin which assails us from within, and also the flesh and the devil which assail us from without. (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 39, a. 5.) The Father has spoken forth the eternal Word in Christ the Lord, and breathed forth the word of truth at the baptism of the Lord; "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." (Lk 3:22) In our daily lives we are to grow in prayer, sacrifice and consecration, all by means of the Word of truth, poured forth for us continually in the proclamation of the Gospel and the sacramental life. We encounter the Lord Jesus most perfectly and most fully each week in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, for He truly speaks to us when the Scriptures are proclaimed in the assembly and at the Communion of the Mass we truly receive Him Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Most Blessed Sacrament. By this God-given means the grace of our baptism will grow ever stronger, becoming "a fountain within us, welling up to eternal life".

In today’s Gospel the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus and a voice from heaven pro-claims: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Here we hear an unmistakable echo from the first reading: “Here is my ser-vant whom I uphold, my cho-sen one with whom I am pleased” (Isaiah 42:7). Jesus is the Suffering Servant who

comes as liberator, opening the eyes of the blind, freeing those unjustly bound or confined in darkness. As another Christmas fades into the past and we pre-pare to move on next week to ordinary time, these readings help us to understand more fully the mean-ing of the incarnation – of why Christ has come. As Pope Francis noted in a recent general audience, the good news of the incarnation is not merely that God has taken on human flesh, but that God has done so in a world “marked by so many things, good and bad, marked by divisions, wickedness, poverty, arrogance and wars.” Jesus has come to bring God’s mercy to the world.

Having been baptized into the Body of Christ, we too are called to his ministry of mercy - to embrace the mission of Christ and the suffering servant to go out into the world and “heal all those who are oppressed” doing the ordinary actions of our day with love.

ADULT CONFIRMATION classes will begin on TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2020 from 7:00 -8:30 pm in Room 111 in the Religious Education Building. Register now to reserve your place. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2020 at 6:00 pm at Mary Star of the Sea church.

RECYCLING: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children.

If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Jamie at 310-833-3541, ext. 221, 222.

Faith Formation Scope out your local playground Children love playgrounds — so much space to explore and play — and so do parents – a great way to burn off energy! But before you send your children on their way, consider a few safety tips. Watch out for drawstrings and loose-fitting clothing. They can get caught and snagged in cracks or crevices on play equipment. Go over playground rules, both the posted ones and the ones for your own family. When you get there, check the equipment for any breaks or cracks that could be hazardous. Make sure you know the age recommendations for equipment. For more safety tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Playground Safety Considerations” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
