Dear Friends,

A little over three years ago when I assumed the chairmanship of theboard of trustees of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital I made a pledge to theIsland that we would commit ourselves to becoming one of the bestsmall community hospitals to be found anywhere. Each year since, I’vebeen pleased to report in this space about all the enormous strides thathave been made in that quest.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of everyone providingsuperior health care and those supporting them, the hospital is enjoyinga resurgence in Island confidence and utilization. As the community haswitnessed all the real and substantive changes, there is a renewed senseof confidence, not just within the hospital, but among all Islanders thatthe hospital is truly committed to becoming the very best smallcommunity hospital that it can be. Equally important, chief executiveofficer Tim Walsh and his management team have continued toemphasize the importance of fiscal discipline in maintaining a positivebottom line and have worked tirelessly to end an era of perpetual losses.In fact, this year I am pleased to report that we reached yet anothermilestone. Not only has the hospital turned a profit for the third year ina row; for the very first time in its history, Windemere also finished theyear in the black.

As proud as we are of our growing financial stability, our greatestsense of satisfaction is about far more than a strengthened bottom line.It is that we have built the foundation for our broader vision — a brandnew hospital. We have always known that we could not realistically askfor support for the construction of a new facility until we proved that wewere also good fiscal managers.

I believe there is no endeavor more critical to the health and welfareof all of us who have chosen the Vineyard to live or visit, than rebuilding

our threadbare Island hospital.To that end, this summer wewill be out in the community inearnest making our case andasking for everyone’s support ofour dream of a new hospital forthe next generation.

Our passion aside, the simpletruth is the dream can onlybecome reality if everyonebelieves it must. If this newhospital is to be, it will onlyhappen because of the supportand openhandedness of ourIsland community. In everysense, this new hospital willreflect our community’scommitment to quality healthcare at home. With that in mind,I am very proud to announceanother important planned change for our new hospital — a new name:Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. It only seems right.

This is an incredibly important moment for the hospital and theIsland. Working together, I know we can create a health care institutionthat can set the standard for rural health care. What seemed impossiblejust a short time ago now seems totally within our grasp. I hopeeveryone will join us in our campaign to begin anew.

Dear Friends,

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I am pleased to reportthat 2004 was again, another banner year for Martha’s VineyardHospital — and also Windemere. For the third year in a row thehospital showed a gain for the year. And for the very first time in itshistory, Windemere also posted a modest profit for 2004. Ken Chisholm,our nursing home administrator, and the entire Windemere staff deserveenormous credit for doing what many thought was impossible. Justthree years ago, Windemere was sustaining such large losses that therewas serious debate about possibly having to close the Island’s onlynursing home. Although we are not totally out of the woods, we are nowcautiously optimistic that if we remain vigilant and disciplined (and thegovernment doesn’t change the rules) we will always have a high qualityskilled nursing facility to serve the Island’s elderly. Speaking of quality,in addition to the financial turnaround, this year Windemere alsoreceived its highest quality ranking ever by the MassachusettsDepartment of Public Health and is now rated one of the best nursinghomes among its peers.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have been able tocontinue our long-term plan for repairs and refurbishments of theexisting facility. After so many years of neglect, we have a very longlaundry list of maintenance issues that must be addressed. Everythingfrom the failing HVAC system, to the leaking roof, to crackedwindows and worn out doors is being attended to on a priority basis.In addition, we have continued to invest in new technology in allpatient areas of the hospital, with the majority of the expendituresgoing for new medical equipment and software that can enhance thedelivery of care today — and can also be easily transported to a newfacility tomorrow. In total, during this last year, we have invested closeto one million dollars in capital equipment and improvements and,with the continued philanthropy of our community, we will be able tocontinue the same needed level of reinvestment in our health carefacility for years to come.

This coming year we hope to complete our announced plan to createa hospital based primary care physician group practice on the Island.

In establishing a hospitalsponsored group practice webelieve we can greatly improvethe availability and accessibilityof primary care physicians bytaking over much of theonerous administrative workand allow doctors to spendmore time attending to patientsrather than paperwork. Equallyimportant, we believe a hospitalbased group practice will helpus better recruit new doctors tothe Island to help meet agrowing community need. Thehospital has come to see that itmust take the lead in ensuringthat we have enough primarycare physicians on the Vineyardand we are hard at work bothrecruiting and creating an environment to attract high qualityphysicians to the Island.

On the subject of new physicians, I am pleased to announce that wehave recruited two new primary care physicians, Dr. Gail O’Brienand Dr. Julia Stunkel, to join our hospital staff over the next fewmonths. Both physicians will be great additions to our alreadyoutstanding medical staff and we look forward to welcoming them tothe Island.

Finally, on behalf of everyone at the hospital, I would like to take thisopportunity to express our sincere thanks to everyone on our evergrowing list of contributors. Your generosity has allowed our hospital tobegin to blossom again. It is indeed an honor to live in such a caring andgenerous community. We remain in your debt — and at your service.

Hospital Chief Executive OfficerRecounts the Numbers for 2004

This past year has been one of significant change for the medicalstaff.

We have successfully reorganized ourselves and we now have thefollowing departments:

Primary Care: Dr. Ilene Klein, Chief Surgical Services: Dr. Denise Fraser, Chief Anesthesia: Dr. Stephen London, Chief Diagnostic Imaging: Dr. Stephen Miller, Chief Emergency Medicine: Dr. Timothy Tsai, Chief

With this new departmental structure, the medical staff is able tomore efficiently manage the growing administrative responsibilitiesrequired of medical staffs and be better able to provide the highestlevel of care at the same time.

We continue to support medical education by hosting medicalstudents from Harvard Medical School and the University ofMassachusetts Medical School.

We are slowly moving into the computer information age. All of thephysicians’ offices are now connected to the Internet via the hospitalnetwork. It is now possible for physicians to view radiology reportsand X-rays on their office computers. It is anticipated that in the nearfuture, we will also be able to receive laboratory reports in the samefashion.

The relationship among the medical staff, the hospital administrationand the board of trustees has never been better. We are all workingtogether to build a new hospital and to make Martha’s VineyardHospital the best critical access hospital in the country.

Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Through the Years

COTTAGE HOSPITAL. In 1929 the first hospital was completed with 25 beds. “The hospital has assumed its place in the life of the Island of Martha’s Vineyard,” wrote president Stephen Carey Luce Jr.

SCHEMATIC FOR THE 1974 ADDITION. The $6.7 million, 80-bed addition was the largest single project ever undertaken on the Island.
