June 2020 Dear Triple Creek Ranch Guests,
In Montana, we live surrounded by soaring mountains and rushing rivers. In the spring, our fields fill with wildflowers and the faraway cries of meadowlarks. In the winter, snow blankets the ground and brings its quiet, majestic beauty. Lewis and Clark walked these trails with Sacagawea, and the pioneers soon followed. We can think of no place more quintessentially American than our home here in big sky country. In this spirit, we’ve curated a collection of wines that pay tribute to our great nation. You’ll find Zinfandel from Sonoma’s historic vineyards planted in the late 1800’s, classic Cabernet Sauvignon from the crown jewel vineyards of the Napa Valley and hidden gems from winemakers who are crafting incredible wines in the most far-flung and unexpected corners of our country. Our list isn’t limited to the United States. Since the founding of our nation we’ve been inspired by delicious wines from abroad. Having discovered that good wine was “a necessity of life” for him, Thomas Jefferson travelled in 1787 to the wine regions of France, Italy and Germany. He brought back wines (and vines) with the hope of creating American wines that might rival those of Europe. In this grand tradition of Exploration, we bring you wines from around the world that inspire our favorite winemakers and us. We invite you to peruse our list and see what catches your fancy. We’re here to help you find a wine that we hope you’ll enjoy and remember fondly. Cheers! Angela Gargano Wine & Spirits Director The Triple Creek Ranch

The Pioneers California Heritage Field-Blend Zinfandel Vineyards
In the late 1800’s pioneers were moving westward towards California. Those that came from countries with a tradition of winemaking brought vines (and dreams of planting vineyards) with them. Some of these vineyards still remain in hidden corners of Northern California; a living legacy of these early wine pioneers. While today we most often plant vineyards with one grape varietal (and then blend in the winery) many of these historic vineyards were interplanted with different varietals including Zinfandel, Mourvedre and Carignane. In addition, these vineyards are dry-farmed which means that no irrigation is used to maintain them. As vines age, they grow deeper roots allowing them to better survive droughts and fires. This is both great for water conservation and helps create wines of greater complexity and depth. To honor this living wine heritage, we bring you a collection of wines from this treasure trove of pre-prohibition historic vineyards.
Old Hill Vineyard
Originally planted in 1852 by viticulturist William McPherson Hill – most sources say that this small 40-acre plot is the oldest vineyard in California in continuous operation. Its gnarly vines have lived through drought, fires and encroaching modernization and have not only survived but thrived. Located in Sonoma County it’s currently farmed by the iconic Will Bucklin who has been a huge proponent of both dry-farming and using organic growing practices.

Evangelho Vineyard
Planted in the 1890’s this vineyard in Contra Costa county is one of California’s most intriguing. Own-rooted on sand it sits in the shadow of an energy plant and is tucked between fast food restaurants – a small remnant of our viticulture past that has managed to survive amid encroaching modernity. Farmed by the Evangelho family since the 1930’s it was recently acquired by Bedrock Wine Company. It’s vines – a field blend of Zinfandel, Carignane, Mourvedre and more – produce a unique wine of freshness, elegance and complexity.

Lytton Springs Vineyard
A sea captain by trade, Captain William Lytton was a colorful figure in early Sonoma history. He ran away from home at 12 to become a sailor and found his way to San Francisco in 1849 where he established himself as a businessman. He lost and gained several fortunes in his lifetime, eventually buying the land where this vineyard sits today to build a luxury resort. After he was thrown from a buggy to his death in 1887 the property was sold. Between 1901 and 1910, vines were planted here by the new owners with an interspersed field-blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Mourvedre. In 1972, Ridge made it’s first vintage of wine from this vineyard; eventually purchasing the property in the early 1990s. Current age of vines is 100+ in heritage blocks.

Pagani Ranch Vineyard
First planted in the 1880’s by Italian immigrants Angela and Felice Pagani. Located between Glen Ellen and Kenwood, this is one of Sonoma’s most revered historic vineyards – containing a mix of 100+ year old head-trained vines planted to a wide mix of varietals including Zinfandel. It is still farmed today by the fourth generation of the Pagani family – a true testament to the dedication, tenacity and love that has gone into preserving this vineyard through wars, prohibition, drought, fires and more.

Monte Rosso Vineyard
One of the most beautiful vineyards on earth, Monte Rosso sits high above Sonoma on the slopes of Mount Veeder. This sprawling 350-acre vineyard – Monte Rosso or ‘Red Mountain’ – is named for its iron-rich soil type, which is a distinctive brick red color. The combination of the soil type, the elevation and the age of the vines gives wines from this vineyard a distinctive perfume. When you drink a wine from Monte Rosso you know that it could come from no place else. Planted before automation in the 1890’s it’s incredible to think of the hard work that went into carving terraces out of the sleep slopes to plant vines here. It’s a true treasure of American viticulture.

The Royals The Crown Jewel Cabernet Vineyards
While European monarchs wear their crown jewels on their heads; here in the United States we feel that our greatest treasures lie beneath our feet in the land itself. In that spirit we offer you a selection of vinous gems from some of California’s most famous and revered Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards.
Martha’s Vineyard
One of Napa’s most revered vineyards; the original vineyard was planted in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains in the early 1960s and purchased just two years later by Tom and Martha May. In 1965, Joe Heitz started buying their grapes and the rest is (wine) history. Famous for its trademark minty aroma, the 1970 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard was chosen for the famous 1976 ‘Judgement of Paris’ tasting beating out many more well-known Bordeaux wines in a blind tasting.

Montebello
Planted in 1959 by a Stanford professor, this vineyard is located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Cruz mountains. The combination of cool-climate (from the ocean breezes), mountain elevation and limestone soils produces a wine that consistently combines finesse with strength — helping it to earn its reputation as one of California’s ‘first-growth’ vineyards.

Napanook
In 1838 George Yount, the founder of Yountville, planted some of the very first vines in the Napa Valley at this site. Over a century later, in 1943, it was purchased by John Daniel and it’s grapes were used to produce Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon — the most famous wine of it’s time. It’s current owner, Christian Moueix, purchased it in the early 1980’s continuing the long tradition of creating world-class wines from it’s volcanic, well-draining soils.

The Explorers Currently featuring Cathy Corison of Napa’s Corison Winery We’ve always been explorers. Since the time of Thomas Jefferson, we’ve set out towards distant shores looking for what’s new and delicious in the world of wine. We’re in a golden age of wine that Jefferson would envy — in addition to the incredible wines we’re producing here, we have access to wines from the most far-flung corners of the globe to enjoy. In this spirit, we bring you the wines favored by the winemakers and tastemakers whom we admire.
Our global Explorer picks come from a winemaking icon – the inimitable Cathy Corison. We’re longtime fans of Cathy’s warmth, kindness…and, of course, her elegant yet powerful Cabernets! In addition, we love that fact that she has a palate that is both eclectic and incredibly astute. She tastes widely from around the world and is always on the lookout for what’s new, fresh and happening in the world of wine. Our team had the pleasure to taste with her this past January and she inspired us to keep our passion for wine alive by always exploring! Here are the wines on our list from around the globe that Cathy is drinking, loving and feeling inspired by right now, in her own words.
La Spinetta, Barbaresco, Italy, 2014 150
The great wines of Italy are a constant source of inspiration for me. They are both powerful and elegant- a combination I have been chasing in my own winemaking for my entire adult life. My personal taste tends to lean toward the brightness of fruit I find in Barbaresco, relative to Barolo (which I love as well).
Gaja, Sito Moresco, Nebbiolo Blend, Langhe, 2012 135
I’ve grown to love all the expressions of the Langhe in Piedmont. This wine is blended with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, adding a berry fruit component to the tar and roses of Nebbiolo from Piedmont.

Heidi Schrock, Furmint, 2017 60
Heidi is making thrilling wines in Burgenland, Austria, championing regional grapes that evolved with the climate and regional food. Her vineyards are in Rust on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl at the border with Hungary. Furmint is best known for making the great Botyrtised dessert wines of Tokaj in Hungary but is making great dry wines as well. It is snappy and delicious with a lovely minerality.
Billecart-Salmon, Brut, Rosé, NV (Half Bottle) 115
This was our wedding champagne! It is one of the best Brut Rosés out there an always a good value. The gorgeous salmon color is worth the price of admission alone. Red fruit flavors from Pinot Noir in the blend meld seamlessly with the toasty characters of great Brut Champagne.
