Football
Teamwork. Sacrifice. Support. Valour. Resilience. Respect. The beautiful
game of football is about all of the very greatest elements of human
nature, and these show themselves every time a Marist Canberra
Football Club (MCFC) team takes the fie ld.
In the 2017 season, for instance, we saw one of our teams begin their
game two players down and go on to win against a full-strength
opposition team, thus guaranteeing themselves an un-defeated
competition winning season. Our First XI also finished the season
undefeated, for the second year in a row. We saw a player who had his
toenail torn off heading back on to the field, after sideline su rgery by
his gutsy coach, and helping his team to a gritty fight-back. And we
saw one of our Marist student referees whose performance was so
consistently impressive being invited by UEFA to train in Portugal with
the world's best match officials.
Off the field we had 19 coaches give up 14 hours of personal time to
complete the FFA Skil ls Acquisition Certificate, which in itself boosted our
club's coaching capabilities enormously. Managers kept the parent groups
informed of what was going on, parents created warm communities
that helped to combat the bitter cold of Canberra winters and the MCFC
committee, a devoted group of 22 volunteer parents and teachers, worked
heroically behind the scenes to ensure another super smooth season.
In 2017 we broke records. MCFC boasted 385 registered players and 29
Club-supported referees, all Marist students. Players were spread amongst
28 teams which were supported by 44 coaches and 30 managers. As with
the growth and continued success of football worldwide, the club is only
expected to become more popular in the coming years.
To meet the demand in 2018 - our club's fortieth ann iversary year -
we have already put several initiatives in place. One involves increased
and ongoing coach training. A second is an entirely new Marist footba ll
logo, which will allow us to move confidently into the future with a
refreshed line of supporter gear. And our committee are looking into
updated equ ipment and seating for the convenience, and enjoyment
of players and their supporters.
Most important of all are the boys who take the fie ld to represent Marist
football in true Marist Col lege Canberra sporting spirit, week in and
week out, throughout the 16-week season. Playing for Marist College
Canberra allows them to show their true colours, to support their mates,
to feel the thrill of a win, to learn to calmly hand le the sting of a loss and,
most importantly, to respect everybody around them whether that be
the opposition players, the match officials or spectators on the sideline.

The Marist Canberra Football Club wou ld like to say a special thank you
to this year's recipient of our Lifetime Member award, the Brocklehurst
family, and to outgoing headmaster Mr Richard Sidorko, whose
gu idance and support has helped to ensure our ongoing success.

Football Club Report
Our 385 players, 28 teams, 44 coaches and 30 managers had one record-breaking season. Thank you to the entire Football family.
Too often a sporting year is judged solely upon competition success. By that measure, Marist Canberra Football Club (MCFC) had a cracking
good year.
Our First XI took out top place, undefeated for the second year in a
row, and our Second XI also finished on top of their table. The Under 12 Division 2 and Under 13 Division 2 teams won their competitions, and
four other MCFC teams came runners up.
We also saw success in other competitions, including table-topping performances in the Lightning Cup, Kanga Cup and Cowra Carnival.
More important though, for a club such as MCFC, is the community that builds around the teams. Nineteen coaches gave up 14 hours of their
time to attend advanced coach training, resulting in a rise in the level
of performance across the board. Twenty-nine MCFC-aligned referees
brought calm control to every game, and one impressed authorities
so much that he was invited to Portugal to attend special referee training.
All players, young and old, learned important lessons around respect.
Judging by the number of players in our junior years, we're looking
forward to a decade of enormous growth. Thanks to several years of fine
management, the Club is well placed to meet this demand. We'll see you
on the field!
Richard Arranz
