Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

“Who would be a parent these days?!”

You look at this and believe someone has written this in recent times. The fact is it is over a thousand years old!

So the common denominator here is that it hasn’t got any easier.

Technology was supposed to make our lives easier but it hasn’t in terms of the constant presence of emails, text messages, twitter, etc.

I read an article written by Callie Watson in The Courier Mail on 29 August entitled, “Parents give up on discipline because they don’t know how”. The reason, according to Professor Freda Briggs author of Smart Parenting for Safer Kids, is that mothers and fathers lack the skills to effectively discipline children as many don’t know what to do beyond smacking. Professor Briggs said, “We’ve been telling parents not to smack, but haven’t told them what to do instead and how to do it. As a consequence, some have stopped parenting in so much as they’re not insisting on rules and limits.”

In their book, Parenting in Pactice, Joseph Degeling and Christien Langridge see consistency as the cornerstone of parenting. “Children learn, however, from the consistent application of boundaries and consequences.” This means maintaining the same standard time and time again. This can be exhausting but it pays dividends in the long term. Joseph and Christine offer six steps to Parenting in Practice:

1. Reflect on your Parenting Style – What are my strengths and weaknesses? What are my limitations? How can I build the relationship with my child?

2. Introduce and Affirm Clear Boundaries – What behaviour will or won’t you accept? List problem behaviours and work on the top three.

3. Set Realistic Consequences and Rewards – Reward good behaviour as much as possible. Enforce consequences when boundaries are crossed.

4. Nurture the Relationship – Be flexible and approachable. Remember parenting is an investment for the future. Good relationships prevent stress.

5. Evaluate and Reflect – Have a backup plan for when things go wrong. Talk to others about your successes and failures. Reflect on the suitability of your parenting strategies.

6. Look After Yourself – If you’re tired and stressed you cannot parent properly! Take time out. Invest in you and your partner’s relationship.

So it’s not all doom and gloom? Ultimately, the words of Stephen R. Covey ring true:

“Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.”

In terms of parenting, this tells me that I have to stick to what I believe is right no matter what boundaries my children might attempt to dismantle or crash through! Like I say to the boys, we can only ever aspire to be the best possible person we can be.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

fundIng CERtAInty: A muSt fOR OuR SChOOlS And OuR COmmunItIESThe Federal Government is conducting a sweeping review of funding for all schools- government and non-government, including Catholic schools. There will be a new national system of school funding in place from 2014.

The Government must guarantee funding certainty post-2013 for all Catholic schools.Funding certainty means a guarantee of ongoing funding in full dollar value terms for all 1,701 Catholic schools.

It means security of enrolment for the 712,864 students currently enrolled in Catholic schools - one in five Australian students attend a Catholic school.

It means job security for the 81,121 Australians working in Catholic schools.

It means certainty for over half a million Australian families.

The National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) has made a submission to the Review to ensure funding certainty for our schools now and into the future. For more information visit www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au.

The NCEC submission calls for:• funding fairness, for Catholic school funding to be brought closer to average resource levels in

government schools;• continued “block funding” to each State Catholic Education Commission for distribution to schools on

the basis of need; and• additional support for those students and schools who need a little extra help – including Indigenous

students, students with disability, schools in regional and remote areas, and new arrival and refugee students.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

A welcome number of parents, students and staff responded to my recent request to complete a survey about the co-curricular offerings at the College. This is an initiative of our strategic working group which is preparing a submission to the College Leadership Team in preparation for the next Strategic Plan 2012-2015.

Most of the comments received were constructive and showed a genuine interest in considering ways in which the College can provide positive experiences for our students in sport, music and the multitude of other activities currently on offer.

What is clear in the area of sport in particular is that the demand for places in teams far outweighs the number of teams that we can support. Related to this problem is the fact that most other schools cannot field the number of teams that we currently do and so finding teams to play against is an issue which may intensify over time.

Some examples of the feedback are shown by these graphs:

IgnAtIuS WAlK fOR InnOCEntS 2011 On behalf of Innocents Relief, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in the recent Ignatius walk for Innocents. We had another excellent response with more than 150 walkers participating. The result is that half of the funds raised {about $1,500} will go to the Marist facility in Cambodia. The rest will go to one of the centres supported by IR. To all the walkers who took part, their parents and the staff we are very grateful. To Gerard Monsour and the boys from Ignatius you did another great job. The Mates BBQ was a huge hit and the services staff again were very helpful. Mena McLean, Michael Druce, the boys and their families from the Junior School were again very significant supporters. We will look forward to next year’s walk with anticipation and hope for similar if not greater success. Many thanks to all those cooks out there who have already contributed to the College’s cookbook, Convenire.

Our aim is to make Convenire the most indispensable resource in your kitchen so could you spare a few moments during the holidays to look through your recipe files and send us your favourites, please?

There are a few gaps in the collection so far so we’re particularly looking for following types of recipes:

• Breakfast and brunch ideas – what do you like to make on a lazy Sunday morning?• Lunches and light meals – something easy for the weekend.• Soups – always a favourite in winter.• Dinner party recipes – for those times when you’re out to impress!• BBQ ideas – alternatives to snags and steak!• Desserts.• Christmas and other special occasion recipes and traditions.• Gourmet gifts – everyone loves to receive a unique, home-made present!• Savoury lunchbox ideas – yummy sandwich fillings, savoury muffins … that sort of thing.• Ideas for allergy sufferers – with so many food intolerances out there, many families are looking for new

ideas.

Don’t feel limited by these ideas, however. Whatever you like to make, please share it with the Marist Ashgrove community through Convenire. There’s no such thing as a recipe that’s “too easy” but even if your favourite dish requires a bit of effort, there’s no doubt another cook who would enjoy the challenge.

Contributing is easy – just click on Cookbook on the Quicklinks menu on the College’s homepage. You can contribute as many recipes as you like and there’s no restriction whatsoever on the type of recipe. If in doubt, send it in!

Wishing you all a relaxing holiday and thanks for your continued support.

come together

Whether cooking is a passion or a daily

chore, it’s something we all have to

do. The College’s recipe collection,

Convenire (‘Come Together’), will be

a great resource when you’re stuck for

ideas to feed your family, but we need

everyone’s favourite recipes to make

it work. Whether you’re into shortcuts

in the kitchen or enjoy spending time

creating something special, send us

your favourites and together we’ll make

Convenire the reference you reach for.

Here are some ideas:

•Quick, everyday dinners. It doesn’t

have to be fancy, but if it’s tasty, fuss-

free and can be thrown together

between rugby training and dance

classes, chances are another busy cook

would love to try it.

•What do you like to make for your

family on the weekends or for a family

get-together? Your family’s favourites

could become just as popular in

another household.

•What about those lazy, sports-free

Sunday mornings? Do you have any

special dishes you enjoy when the day

starts a little more slowly?

•Food and tradition are intrinsically

linked. What are your Christmas

traditions? Do you celebrate your

cultural heritage through your cooking?

We’d love to hear about those recipes

and stories.

•Sweet treats - from afternoon tea to

sinful desserts - are always popular. Tell

us how you spoil your family.

Whatever you like to cook, please share

your recipes and stories with Convenire.

To contribute, just click on Cookbook

on the Quicklinks menu on the College

website, or email your recipe to

[email protected].

If you have any queries about the

Convenire project, please call

SChOlARShIP APPlICAtIOn tIPS QUT receives a high volume of applications each year so here are some hints and guidelines for your students to help maximise their chances of a scholarship application being successful.

Ensure your application is easily read and has a natural flow to it; your application will be viewed more favourably if the assessor can easily grasp why you should be granted the scholarship.

In your written application, ensure you have responded to each aspect of the selection criteria using examples to demonstrate your skills.

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and Learning Continued...

Avoid repeating yourself. Do not rely solely on your academic achievements; try to distinguish yourself by highlighting other qualities and achievements. Make sure you include relevant documentation of your achievements.

To give the assessor a concise overview of your achievements and to ensure nothing is missed, organise your material into sections, for example, all references together, all academic reports together, and all sporting achievements together.

QUT recognises the demands on elite athletes through training and competition, and endeavours to provide student athletes with the same opportunity to excel in their studies as other students. More than 300 elite athletes, represented across more than 50 different sports, are currently enrolled at QUT and registered with the program.

QUT‘s Elite Athlete Entry Program offers prospective students who excel in their sport an exemption of between 1 and 3 OPs. For example, an elite athlete student who receives an OP 8 and wants to study a course that requires an OP 5 may still be eligible to study at QUT.

All applicants will be notified of their outcome before offer rounds are announced in late-December and mid-January. Mid-year applicants will be notified before mid-year offer rounds are announced. For more information visit www.qut.edu.au/elite-athletes

Qut BRIdgIng COuRSEQUT‘s Continuing Professional Education runs bridging courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Students can study chemistry and mathematics on-campus in Semesters 1or 2 or during summer. Physics is studied online and can be started at anytime. The tuition fees for bridging courses range from $600 to $1050. QUT‘s bridging courses are also recognised at many other institutions, but students should check with the admissions office at the institution as to whether these courses are acceptable for entry. Creativity, ingenuity, time management, team work – just some of the skills needed to develop a solution to the annual Tournament of Minds Regional Challenge. Not all are equipped with such talents, but those who do sign up for TOM enjoy themselves immensely. Just ask any of the 26 boys from Years 8, 9 & 10 who spent six weeks organising themselves to put together a ten minute presentation that addressed a challenge set down by the organisers of TOM 2011. From movie trailers to paper cranes, from doctored photos to stop motion movies, the challenges provided opportunities for the script writers, costume and set designers and performers of Marist College to show what they were capable of doing. We saw Barack Obama being controlled by aliens, the fearless and intrepid Indian John quivering at the top of a cliff, the Cowboys doing the Time Warp and annoying children on a long plane flight. No wonder two of our teams were invited to the State Finals.

Congratulations to all four teams:

Applied Technology – Gabe Murphy (Year 10), Isaac Daly (Year 9), Ben Vanderbyl, Lachlan Morgan, Cameron Lake and Lachlan Harris (Year 8)

Language & Literature - 2nd Place in their division and going to State Finals – Elliot Johnston and Lucian Berkovich-Robles (Year 9), Tom Warren, Ben Malt, Michael Gallagher and Harry Collier (Year 8)

Maths/engineering – 3rd Place in their division and going to State Finals - Jon Manthey and William Austin (Year 10), Fletcher Campbell and Daniel Byrne (Year 9) and James Fraser, Luca d’Arienzo and Matthew Bremner (Year 8)

Social Sciences – 1st Place in their division and going to State Finals – Robbie Quinlan, Dylan Gower and Joshua Gault (Year 10), Seamus Coulson (Year 9) and Isaac McSwan, Stuart McKinney and Jacob Grellman (Year 8)

To the team facilitators and Year 11 mentors, I offer my congratulations and sincere thanks for your tireless efforts throughout the six weeks of the challenge – Mr Tim Mulvihill, Ms Julia Palaszczuk, Mr Andrew Devoy with Matthew Downs and Sam Roff, and Mrs Jan Mulvihill with Minh Pham. Many hours go into supporting the teams and without the understanding and generosity of teachers and former Tournament of Minds participants, it would not be possible. Thanks also to James Rigby, Oliver Lane-Porter, Hayden Kennedy and Garrick Cash from Year 12 who are always interested in what’s happening and provide guidance and assistance for the teams whenever I prevail upon them to do so.

From the ArchivesHello to you all again. In keeping with the previous scribblings of the year, this article will discuss another “legend” of the Ashgrove staff, Mr Gerard Monsour. Gerard, or Ged as he is most usually called, has been a member of staff at the College since the long ago year of 1981, and so has seen six Headmasters come, and five of them go, and that certainly is a big chunk of “modern” Ashgrove history. His “legendary” status owes much to his outlook on life, for a more courteous, helpful, kind and considerate person than Ged simply does not exist……

He was born in 1954 in the town of Biggenden, the fourth in a family of three daughters and two sons. The Monsours hailed from the district of Ras Baalbek in Lebanon, and had migrated to Australia in 1948 in search of a more peaceful and stable life than that offered by the turmoil the Middle East was then undergoing. Ged’s father at first helped relatives who had previously migrated run a general shop in Biggenden, but then moved the family to Maryborough to open his own grocery store.

Ged’s education began at St Mary’s Convent, Maryborough, though in Year 3 he transferred to the Christian Brothers College in the same town. He remained with the Christian Brothers until Year 10, becoming so impressed with some of his teachers that he decided to join their Order. (One of Ged’s favourite memories is of a Brother who had the unfortunate and inadvertent habit of speaking in Spoonerisms. The consequence of this was that an Army officer named Brigadier Buggner was introduced to the students at the school one Anzac Day as “Buggedier Brigner” !!!) Ged went to St Edmund’s College at Strathfield in Sydney as a boarder to complete Years 11 and 12, and after graduating became a member of the Novitiate of the Christian Brothers at Beenleigh, Queensland. He then proceeded to Postulancy at Xavier College at Indooroopilly in Brisbane, at the same time getting teacher training at the University of Queensland. After taking his vows, Ged received his first teaching appointment at St John Fisher College in Townsville in the Primary school.

Ged by now was questioning whether the religious life was really for him, and after two years asked to leave the Order. With regard to teaching, however, there were no doubts in the Monsour mind – he had found his vocation. He taught for a year at St Kevin’s Primary school at Geebung in Brisbane, then a further two years at St James in the Valley, also at primary level, in 1979-80. The next year of 1981was fateful on two counts: Ged married his lovely Anna, and also applied for a job at Marist College Ashgrove on the advice of a colleague – he wryly admits he has been faithful to both ever since !!! So impressed was Marist Headmaster Brother Alman “Jack” Dwyer with Ged that he hired him on the spot with a handshake, no questions or paperwork needed. (This author had a similar experience little more than a year later, when “Jack” warmly shook my hand and welcomed me to the staff of the school. A little bewildered at this cavalier treatment, for my background was ten years with the State Education Department, where even a simple visit to the toilet seemed to require forms filled out in triplicate, I asked “Jack” where I was supposed to sign. In similar bewilderment, and looking at his hand, he said: “ You just did !”)

Ged began his career at MCA as a “general dogsbody” in the areas of Religious Education, Social Sciences and English in the Junior School, Years 8 to 10. (Ironically, he laments the fact that his major area of study in his teaching qualification was the subject of History, and the one subject he has NEVER taught is History.) So efficient was Ged, and so well liked by both students and staff for his good humour, friendliness and kindness, that he soon cemented a place in their affections. This was confirmed in 1993 when the House system was instituted by Headmaster Brother Terry Heinrich: Ged was appointed Head of Ignatius House, and took on the onerous duty of overseeing the welfare of about 150 students. He has remained in this post ever since, dispensing good cheer and justice with the same even-handedness that marks all his doings. He is a stalwart of the College – never seeking the limelight, but trusty and dependable in all that he does. If an Army thrives because of the strength of its NCOs, Marist College Ashgrove thrives because of the qualities of its “middle managers” like Ged and his House Master colleagues……

In extra-curricular areas, Ged does what many Marist “legends” have done – a lot. Though having little knowledge of cricket as a sport, Ged put up his hand to coach it in his inaugural

year of 1981, and in partnership with Brother Michael Curnow, found himself responsible for no fewer than eight teams, from the 3rds to the 10ths !!! He has coached Rugby and Basketball EVERY year since 1981, including being coach of the First V Basketball team for an entire decade. So it is not only in the classroom or in his House activities that the students of MCA have benefitted from Ged’s care….

In 30 years plus at the College, it is obvious that “funny” things happen to an individual, but in Ged’s mind, the following incidents are not so much “funny” as “embarrassing”:

• Taking part in a staff-student Basketball game, and suffering a facial knock so severe that his tooth went through his lip, and he required stitches and the actual re-setting of the tooth;

• Being given confusing information about the winner of an Interhouse Performing Arts competition, and as MC of the occasion announcing the wrong name before the entire school;

• Racing in the team bus to catch a plane to Brisbane from a Marist Basketball Carnival in Sydney, only to have to make the quickest of U-turns to get back to Campbelltown to retrieve the team’s Captain, who had been inadvertently left behind….Qantas was very understanding about the delay to its flight;

• Contradicting a volunteer helper, something of an outdoor fanatic, who insisted that things would go on no matter what, on a Year 10 camp to the Kooralbyn Valley in the 1980s: neck deep in a creek swollen by monsoonal rain, and supporting a student who resembled a drowned rat, Ged managed to convey to the fanatic in language unusual for him that the camp was indeed approaching a precipitate conclusion….Brother John Maguire and the school bus playing the part of the 7th Cavalry in the nick of time; and

• Having to dress up in Arab costume as part of the promotion of a Walkathon, and looking so authentic that the staff bestowed a nickname that still haunts Ged: “Yasser”.

Embarrassing incidents aside, the College is fortunate to have enjoyed Ged’s expertise and warmth of personality for three decades. It is people like Ged who make the College the welcoming place that it is, and provide a ready ear to listen to the problems of those seeking help. Ever friendly and ever approachable, he represents all the qualities that lie in the word “Marist”. May the College continue to enjoy those qualities for many years to come.

Mission and Ministry NewsPRAYeROur lady of Sorrows-A reflection

Peter asked Jesus if forgiving seven times would be enough forgiveness. Jesus told Peter that he should forgive seventy times seven times. That is because Jesus wanted to say that no matter how many times we forgive, we have to keep on forgiving. This is a very hard thing to do when people hurt us. Think of all the wrongs that Mary forgave.

dear god,Your kingdom is a place of peace and joy and love. But on this earth that is not always true.We sometimes hurt others. Mary saw all the bad things done to her Son.She forgave those who were mean.help us to forgive others and ask for forgiveness when we do wrong.Amen

fAthER/SOn BREAKfASt

On Friday 2nd September the Father/Son Breakfast was held in the Cyprian Pavilion for 160 people. It was a sit down breakfast which was fully catered for by Mr. Gary Keown and the Hospitality students.

Mr. Tim Mander was the Guest Speaker for the breakfast.

Tim Mander is the CEO of SU Qld. SU Qld is an inter-church Christian movement employing over 600 staff with more than 3,000 volunteers. SU Qld is a state-wide organisation that is recognised as a major provider of camping, community outreach, working with ‘at-risk’ youth, and in recent years, as Australia’s major employer of state school chaplains. Today, SU Qld coordinates the work of over 500 school chaplains in over 600 state schools. Tim was a professional rugby league referee with the National Rugby League (NRL) for 14 years, refereeing over 300 first grade games as well as a dozen international games in countries all over the world. He refereed the two Telstra Premiership Grand Finals in 2004 and 2005, and was named International Referee of the Year for 2005. Tim retired from on-field refereeing in 2005, but he continues to serve the NRL as a video referee. Tim entertained guests with stories about his refereeing career but also spoke seriously to the Fathers and Sons about his insights into what it means to be a good man in today’s world. The Mission team hopes to be able to continue this new initiative and hold another Father/Son Breakfast around the same time next year. The lucky door prize was won by Paul and Mackay Stanley, Mackay is in Year 8 Ridley. The Old Boy Foundation raffles were won by Tim and Oliver Donohue, Oliver is in Year 8 Ignatius, and the Eddy Family, Gregory Eddy who was accompanied by his two sons Luke in Year 9 and Nicholas in Year 10.

YeAR 9 & 10 ReTReATSYear 9 Retreat-Thursday 31st August/ Year 10 Retreat Thursday 8th SeptemberOn Thursday 1st September all Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend a reflection day in the Brother Cyprian Pavilion led by Michael Fitzpatrick. The Year 10 students had their Retreat day on Thursday 8th September which Michael also facilitated. The structure of the Year 9 and 10 retreats were a little different to past years instead of having two separate days where Year 9 and 10 were split over two days, all of the Year 9 and 10 cohorts attended the one reflection day together incorporating their whole year groups.

The students enjoyed an opportunity in an environment where they had a chance to reflect on their relationships including their peer group. Michael encouraged the students to think about daily issues that affect them and it also provided an opportunity for the students to think about their self- esteem, recognize their talents and appreciate their peers. Thank you to all the Religious Education teachers and members of the Mission Team who helped to supervise the students over these two days.

this fantastic program has proven itself to raise confidence and self esteem in participants and will support girls in becoming more grounded, centred and focussed. They will learn how to stand up for themselves with integrity and how to set their own boundaries.

WhAt IS “ROCK And WAtER”? the aim of “Rock & Water” is to provide girls with the skills and attitudes that will help them to mature into fine young adults.

“Rock & Water” helps girls to stay calm when in difficulties. It helps them to manage conflict and bullying without escalating the problem and making it worse. It gives them the ability to shift from fighting to communicating; and over the long term it helps them develop the inner strength to be able to follow their own path in life instead of conforming to the pressure of peer groups or oth-ers. When they apply the lessons of “Rock & Water” to their daily life, they become better able to manage their own energy and stay focused on what is important in their life. Term 3 is fast drawing to a close and I think that we are all needing some refreshment. Boys in Senior years have been working hard completing assessments and studying for exams. Winter is drawing to a close and soon the heat of the summer will be with us.

The holidays are a good time for all of us to revive, to gain that new vigor or spirit that comes with refreshment, to fill up with brightness and begin anew. Holidays help us close off our work and begin the new term with a fresh start.

I hope that not only will the holidays give the boys and staff a break from the regularity of school life but will also refresh our families. Even though tired, the joy of seeing those we love and care for can be a source of new vigor and refreshment. Saint Marcellin, often returning home from his pastoral duties, would always find time to listen to his little brothers, to eat, pray and laugh with them. He believed that this was the core of family life, a model he adopted for his own little brothers.I wish you all a very happy, safe and refreshing holiday.

Father Pius, S.M.

This workshop was presented by the German Youth Guitar Orchestra which is a group comprising 30 exceptional youth guitarists from Germany. The Youth Guitar Orchestra, or JGO, is sponsored by the state of Baden - Württemberg, Germany. Highlights of this ensemble’s activities had been concert tours to Spain, Russia, Thailand and Laos and the Czech Republic and also to Singapore and Central American countries including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The JGO won the 1st prize at the first "German Orchestra Competition" in 1998, achieved the category " extraordinary success" in 2006.

The workshop was a great success and gave the boys a great opportunity to interact not only with the Orchestra but also with fellow guitar students from other Brisbane schools. Thanks to Mr Craig Kennedy, Mr Tony Vandermeer and Mr Leo McFadden for organising this fantastic activity for the boys.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

Junior School NewsDear Parents,

This is the final Newsletter for Term 3, 2011. It’s been a busy term, but a productive one and I am sure the boys have enjoyed their time in this environment. It is a wonderful environment, throughout the whole College, but I am always very aware of the environment within the Junior School. We are very fortunate and so often we forget how fortunate we are.

On Friday 9th September, I met with a mother who is considering sending her son to Marist College in Year 5, 2012. She and her husband really don’t know what to do and they are asking the same questions that I am sure you asked as well, when you were making your decision. I know that I am asked these questions by many parents.

Should we leave our son at his school until Year 7?Is it good to move their son at the end of Year 4?What are the benefits of moving at the end of Year 4?What does Marist College Junior School offer that is different to where their son is at present?

We had a good chat and I asked if she would like to have a walk around the Junior School. Well, I couldn’t have chosen a better day! The Year 5 Red class were all outside working on their laptops, Madame had Year 6 Blue in the Computer Room, all busy at work and there was lots of activity in the Library. When we returned to the office, the mum was so impressed and she said that she was convinced that this environment would really suit her son. As we spoke, I asked what impressed her the most and her answer did not surprise me. It wasn’t the working on laptops, although she asked about the role of ICT’s, it was the atmosphere. She commented that there was a tranquillity and gentleness in the Junior School which she was not expecting and this is what she wished for her own sons.

I responded to this observation by suggesting that this is due to the fact that we are a Marist school, where the spirituality of Marcellin Champagnat is nurtured and becomes very much part of every day in the College. Just recently, I was reading a description of the founding of the Marist Brothers in 1817 and thought that these humble beginnings should still affect what we do each day. There was no great ceremony or accolades, just some young people in relationship with each other. In other words, the foundation of the Marist Brothers was based on a relationship between people and that is very important. This relationship demonstrated trust, warmth, gentleness and determination to lift burdens from the poor around them. These are the words I read and I leave them for your reflection:

The story of our spirituality is one of passion and compassion, passion for god and compassion for people.

Our beginnings were shaped by the caring relationship between a young country priest and a group of young people, living in a time of great social turmoil……Simple and uneducated men, they lived with great simplicity and unity…..They lived in the midst of people and shared their lot.

Ever more deeply, they discovered the presence of god in their midst. together, they developed a thirst for Jesus and for following him in mary’s way.

At the end of Term 3, there are a few important points to draw your attention to:

CONCLUSION OF CIC SPORT FOR 2011The end of Term 3 brings CIC sport to a conclusion and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you, the parents, very much, for your support this year. I know Luke Caplick relies a lot on the support he receives from the parents and your contribution to the sporting programme of the Junior School is invaluable. As we all know, the boys love the sporting programme offered in the Junior School and so much of the credit goes to you, the parents, plus Luke and the Junior School Staff. You would all know that Luke puts a huge amount of time into the CIC sporting programme and if he didn’t enjoy the respect and the support of the Junior School Staff and parents, we would not be able to function so effectively. Next year, with an additional 90 boys in the Junior School, our CIC Programme will be more challenging, but I am very confident that with the support of the staff and parents we will again have a very enjoyable and successful season in 2012.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

APPLICATIONS FOR 2012We are receiving many enquiries about available places in Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 in 2012. I would like to request that if you are planning to remove your son/s from the Junior School at the end of this year, please would you inform me. I always keep this information confidential, but it does assist us with our planning for next year. This also applies to boys in Year 7 who will not be proceeding into Year 8 in 2012 at Marist College. Thank you for your assistance with this. A quick e-mail to me is all that is needed.

EARly dEPARtuRES fROm SChOOlAt times, early departures from school are necessary, but we are required to follow strict guidelines so that we are aware of the location of each boy during the school day. If your son/s has to leave school early for an appointment etc, please would you follow these simple steps:

(1) Communication with the class teacher about the arrangements, preferably a few days before the event/appointment

(2) Your son needs to come to the Junior School Office to ‘sign out’. (3) If your son returns to school that same day, he needs to come to the Junior School Office to inform

the administrative staff that he has returned and then proceed back to his classroom.

Please note: If your son is sent to the College Health Centre, he needs to inform the Junior School Office. If a boy goes home from the Health Centre, the Sisters inform the Junior School office of this departure.

JunIOR SChOOl ASSEmBly At thE End Of tERm 3This will be a rather short assembly, so we are going to begin a little later than usual, so that the boys can leave school after the assembly. They will, however, need to return to the classrooms to collect their bags. The Assembly will begin at 2.00pm, in the Draney Theatre. Parents are most welcome.

COnCluSIOn Of ChESS fOR 2012Chess concluded on Friday 9 September for 2011 and Mrs Pizzato held a ‘Lightening Transfer Tournament’ to conclude a very successful season. These are the results:

First: Harrison Bowles [Year 7Gr] and Bailey Ainsworth [Year 7B] and Tavish Healy [Year 7B]

Second: Daniel Groves [Year 5 G]; Zachary Hancock [Year 7R] and Michael O’Connor [Year 5G]

Third: Samuel Parry [Year 5G] and Cyrus Goulter [Year 5G]

COngRAtulAtIOnS tO thESE BOySI wish to thank and pay tribute to Bailey Ainsworth, Harrison Bowles and Tavish Healy who are all in Year 7 this year and will be missed in the Junior School Chess team.

Each Friday morning we are very pleased to welcome a number of Senior School students to Chess with Mrs Pizzato, so we hope Harrison, Tavish and Bailey will keep the tradition going in 2012!

I also thank Mrs Pizzato for her presence and coaching. The boys love Connie’s lessons and we look forward to welcoming Connie back to the Junior School in 2012.

Qdu dEBAtIng: WEdnESdAy 31 AuguSt, 2011The topic ‘That children should be allowed to choose their own names’ was difficult, but both our teams did very well indeed. Some boys managed to bring a lot of humour into their presentations, which was great. The opposing teams – Saint Margaret’s Anglican Girls School and Clayfield College were excellent, but Team 1, from Marist College Junior School, won and Team 2 lost. Once again, an important experience for our boys and we thank them for representing the College. They all did very well.

french Poetry Competition “Concours de Poésie” 2011On Saturday 20 September school students in South East Queensland participated in the annual French Poetry Competition “Concours de Poésie”, organised by the Alliance Française. The Alliance Française is a French association established in 1883 to promote French language and culture in the world. A large number of boys in Year 5, 6 and 7 expressed a wish to present the poem and they represented our College very well, winning Year 5 and Year 6 divisions and receiving distinctions in Year 7.

The conclusion of Term 3 signals the conclusion of C.I.C Sport for 2011 and it’s appropriate at this stage to acknowledge the efforts of the many people who assist with the effective implementation of Junior School Sport. Firstly, I would like to thank the boys for their sportsmanship and efforts in all sports. Without their commitment and participation to all C.I.C Sports the reputation of Ashgrove Sport would not be what it is. The parents of these boys make many sacrifices to allow for their sons to actively participate in Sport. They obviously recognise the importance of school sport and without their support, Ashgrove Sport would not operate as smoothly.

Throughout the year we have many volunteers who offer their time to contribute towards Junior School Sport. Many of these volunteers come from our parenting body and it is always appreciated when they contribute at carnivals, games and training sessions. Special mention must go to those parents who have proactively assisted throughout the year in all Sports, in the true Marist spirit these parents constantly give of themselves to the College without ever questioning what they are going to receive in return.

We are fortunate enough to have wonderful grounds-staff who; prepare our amazing fields for the different sporting seasons. The Coaches and Referees allow all our games to run efficiently and without incident, thanks.

Finally, the Junior School staff make my job so much easier with their willingness to commit to all Sports. I recognize that their efforts go above and beyond their role descriptions and they should be appreciated more for their commitment to continuing the mission of Marcellin Champagnat.

C.I.C AthlEtICS 2011 Last week the C.I.C Track and Field Championships transpired at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Complex (old QEII Stadium). Congratulations to all the boys who trained hard and performed well during the lead-up carnivals. It was extremely difficult to settle on the final C.I.C Athletics squad, this is a testament to the hard work put in by many athletes but unfortunately all cannot be selected.

Junior School Sports News Continued...

On Tuesday 6th September our athletes competed in all Field events and 800metres. At the conclusion of these events we were slightly disappointed to find ourselves in fifth position, trailing the leader by 182 points with second place still 124 points out in front. Both the boys and coaches felt like they should have performed better and looked to day 2 of the carnival as a way of redeeming themselves. Redeem themselves they did! On Wednesday the boys contested the 100m, 200m, hurdles and relay. It was an inspired performance by all involved. Our hurdlers performed brilliantly to start the day and this set the trend for our 200m and 100m events. The day was capped off with our relay teams surging home to place us just 12 points from second position. This was truly an amazing effort given we made up 112 points on second place from the day before. Ashgrove finished 4th overall, out of the 14 schools, however we just 6 points from 3rd and 12 points behind 2nd.

All of the Athletes must be congratulated on their efforts throughout the season, with their application at training and in particular the effort they put in on Day 2 of the CIC Championships to give the leaders a real scare.

I would like to give special praise to Mr Brauer who coordinated the Athletics squad this year for the first time. He did a wonderful job and is looking forward to continuing his great work with our Athletics team in 2012.

It should be highlighted that the areas where we improved dramatically was the sprints and hurdles. Our Sprints Coach was Mr Brett Leavy who has an amazing background in the sport. I cannot speak highly enough of the impact Brett had on our team. His training program not only provided for enormous improvement from our boys, it also was fun and enjoyable, with all athletes keen to be involved and take on board what Brett offered. Jack Conway, who is an old boy of the College, trained our long jump and hurdles and as I touched on earlier, it was clearly evident that our hurdlers were trained by a well-resourced coach and the hurdles set the scene for our Day 2 redemption. Another old boy, Michael Shallcross coached our Shot Put, thanks Michael. Finally I’d like to thank Matt Green who has supported the Athletics Program over the past 4 years, without having him our program we would not have seen the development we have witnessed over the past few years.

C.I.C. BASKEtBAll 2011The C.I.C. Basketball season concluded last weekend, with final round matches against Brisbane Boys College. Overall, the Junior School Basketball program had a good season with many fine victories, large numbers of interest in the sport and numerous well performed teams. The real measure of a successful season is seeing so many boys enjoy their Basketball whilst being part of a team and playing sport with their mates.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

After a long and arduous season, there are always many people who should be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication in helping the Junior School Basketball program. I would like to express my deepest thanks to the following groups of people: -

- To the coaches, your dedication and hard work, week in and week out at training is very much appreciated.

- Many thanks to the referees, without your involvement the games would not go ahead. These people include; Jack O’Brien, Zac Adams, Ryan Chapman, Sam Arnold, Connor Arnold and Oliver West.

- To the players, thanks for the wonderful memories, the determination shown and the continuation of College spirit.

C.I.C TeNNIS 2011The 2011 tennis season has been most pleasing; the boys approached their matches seriously and with enthusiasm. I would like to thank the parents of our boys for their efforts in getting our players to these matches during those busy Saturday mornings. I would also like to make special mention of Scott Murphy and Michael Druce for their efforts in organising the boys. Scott, especially, contributes enormous amounts to the overall Sports Program. Scott also penned the following season summary thanking those who have been of assistance to him throughout the season:

“The CIC tennis season concluded last Friday, but unfortunately it was washed out due to the rain. The last three rounds of competition this year we played some matches on Friday afternoon/evening. This was well received and enjoyed by all; giving our boys the opportunity to play under lights as well. Hopefully, in the future was can make this a regular event given our wonderful new courts the College has built.

Our 2011 season had many ups and downs on the results sheet, although we won more than we lost. Congratulations to Team 5 who finished the season undefeated. Regardless of the score however, I am very proud to say that our boys displayed true sportsmanship on and off the court throughout the season. Many people assisted me and who now I would like to thank. Cath Geraghty provided transport for boys to various away matches. Through the P & F, Roberta Bannah provided tea & coffee for our home matches and Shane Mead provided and cooked sausages for the hungry boys on Friday evenings. As the season is over I am looking forward to next year as we add more boys into the selection process with our extra classes, hopefully making us even more competitive.”Luke Caplick - Head of Sport- Junior School
