A Message from the Primary School Principal, Mr Tony Williams HERITAGE DAY – MONDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER

On Monday 24th September, our country will be celebrating Heritage Day. The term ‘heritage’ can be described as ‘practices that are handed down from the past by tradition’. The author John Steinbeck once said, “How will our children know who they are if they don’t know where they come from?” So, where do our children come from?

Different forms of heritage include aspects such as historical, architectural, cultural, natural, arts and crafts, traditional food and music. It is also anything from the past handed down by tradition e.g. historical sites and buildings, the natural environment and archaeological finds. With SA’s first democratic elections in 1994, it was decided that important historical days should receive attention. Cabinet decided that there should be a day (24 September) on which South Africans celebrate their heritage each year; the first of which took place in 1995. The Department of Arts and Culture is the custodian of South Africa's culture and has the responsibility to plan and manage events for Heritage Day at national level annually. The idea is to preserve, exhibit and promote our diverse but connected cultures. Heritage Day should encourage the youth, in particular, to embrace South Africa's common heritage. In South Africa a rich blend of different forms of heritage makes our people unique in the world, and it is that heritage, that must be preserved. Our heritage sets us apart from other people and allows us to identify ourselves from other nations. Our heritage gives a feeling of belonging and pride of place. We wish all of our families and very special Heritage Day. Enjoy the Braai!

Smile A While I heard via the grape vine that there is a conference being held entitled, “Continuing Education for Men”. This conference is strictly for men but designed by women and some of the topics to be discussed include: “The toilet seat: The saga continues”

“Loss of Identity: Losing the remote to your significant

other”

“Real men ask for directions when lost” and finally …

“How to deal with your mother-in-law in three easy steps”

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Congratulations to the First Holy Communion children who received the Sacrament of

Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday the 15th of September. May you continue to walk in

Jesus’ way as you prepare to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. God bless.

CLASS LISTS FOR 2019 As we head towards the last stretch of the 2018 school year, we have already had placement

requests for certain teachers, by parents, for their child in 2019. The drawing up of class lists

for the next school year is no easy task. There are many factors taken into consideration and

this is not a task taken lightly by the teachers. Staff have to take into consideration factors

such as the child’s personality, teacher’s personality, ability levels, friendships, numbers per

class, working combinations, “bad” combinations, boy/girl ratio, etc.

Please note, it is not school policy to place a child in a class, or with a specific teacher, due to

a parent’s request and we ask that you please trust our professional judgement in this regard.

PULL RING COLLECTION Thanks to our pupils and families, as well as folk from St Paul’s United

Church, St Therese’s Catholic Church and Genesis Educare for collecting

and sending pull rings in dutifully. Last week I received a wheelchair to

donate to a worthy cause or person to make a difference in their lives.

It came to my attention that the Ennerdale Clinic desperately needed a

wheelchair for people visiting the clinic, as the one they had is no longer

functioning. This clinic will receive the wheelchair so that they may

continue to provide their community with quality health care.

Please continue to collect pull rings from any can from which you drink.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT

NETBALL AND SOCCER RESULTS AND SUCCESSES Netball - The A Teams achieved an 87% win record for the 2018 season. Our U10As were the

Johannesburg Co-ed Schools Inter-District winners. Our U13A achieved a Bronze medal position. The U13 Girls were unbeaten in local league fixtures and on the Cape Town sports

Tour.

Soccer - Overall we achieved a 61% win/draw record for the 2018 season.

The above Netball and Soccer results have improved since last year and are in line with our

strategic imperative to improve the sport at the school.

Well done to all of our winter sports teams!

RESULTS Chess:

Marist Brothers Linmeyer played a Chess match against Rewlatch Primary and won 9.5 points

to 6.5.

SWIM-OFFS Compulsory swim offs will take place during PT next week. Only children with a doctor’s letter

will be allowed to challenge for a place in the inter-house gala after these swim offs.

KARATE Congratulations to Christopher Ho (Grade 4) and to Gabriella

Ho (Grade 1) who took part in the annual JKA Karate Syndicate

competition. Both students won silver medals for Kata and

bronze medals for Kumite.

Well done Christopher and Gabriella!

Luka Guimbra (Grade 2) participated in his very first Karate

tournament for Syndicate Champs on the 8th of September. and

received a silver medal for his Kata and a gold medal for

Kumite in his division.

Well done Luka!

ACTION NETBALL

Congratulations to Alexia Nunes, a Grade 3 student and her action netball team (Diamonds)

who have made it through to Gold finals.

This team was previously unbeaten, and moved up a league, playing against Grade 4’s.

This is a fantastic achievement to come this far.

Good luck for the finals girls!

ALBERTON EISTEDDFOD Hetal Chiba, a Grade 4 student, was an item winner for

Grade 4 own choice Poetry at the Alberton Eisteddfod.

SOCCER Congratulations to Micaela Nunes (Grade 10), who after a rigorous selection camp last week,

has been selected from 46 hopefuls as one the 21 players for the U17 National Soccer Team.

HIKING Congratulations to Ishaan Devchand (Grade 8) for successfully

completing the Tsitsikamma Otter Trail in the Garden Route National

Park on the 3rd of September this year. Ishaan hiked for 5 days over

the rugged, rocky shoreline, through rain and crossed freezing rivers.

Well done on an outstanding achievement, Ishaan! You can be very

proud of yourself

THERAPY CORNER

Marcelle Niehaus, Occupational Therapist

FAMILY MEETING. Have a meeting with the family to make a plan to reduce screen time.

Also discuss what to do in place of screen time.

CHANGE ROUTINE – certain times should be media free for example meal times and

mornings before school.

REMOVE the TV, Computer and PlayStation from your child’s room. They need to be in a

room where you can control them. Your child should learn to fall asleep in his bed and not

in front of the TV.

LIMIT AND PLAN - Decide on the amount of screen time you are going to allow each day

and help younger children plan and choose what programmes they are going to watch.

“PARKING LOT” – create a parking lot for electrical devices. Use a basket or charging

station in the centre of the house where family should “park” their screen devices at

certain times of the day and especially overnight.

BE FIRM BUT UNDERSTANDING - Changing screen time habits is hard. You may have to

deal with anger, disappointment and sad feelings. Encourage your family to stick to the

new plan.

IDEAS OF THINGS TO DO, INSTEAD OF SCREEN TIME – play board games, walk the

dog, baking, help set the table, make and fly paper aeroplanes, play dough, drawing, ride a

bike, hopscotch, swimming, reading, puzzles, painting, play date with friends etc.
