From the HeadmasterDear members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

At our recent Mass to celebrate the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, three Champagnat Day Awards were given: one to parents; one to a student and one to a staff member. The common trait was one of self-sacrifice. As St Francis of Assisi said, “Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to his beloved is that of overcoming self.”

I’d like to share with you the citations that were read out before each recipient was presented with their award. I’m sure you will join me in congratulating Alan and Adele Hamilton, Tom Copley and Peter Lehman on their very deserving awards.

Champagnat Day Award - ParentsOur first award today is made to one of our College families. This family has for a number of years dedicated itself to the Parents and Friends Association. Their generous service to the College community is typical of a group of parents who are willing to go the extra mile to support their sons’ education and the education of all other boys in the College. It is an attitude that develops from those typical Champagnat qualities – faithful, persistent, hardworking, generous, to name a few. It is an attitude that is absolutely critical to our school’s mission to be and to be seen to be a Marist Family. As we know one of the characteristics of Marist Education is Family Spirit. The family we honour today through this award gives life to their belief that their sons education is important and that they are prepared to support them through service, sacrifice and commitment. They have done this freely with their dedicated involvement with the Parents and Friends Association, dad being a past president of the Parents and Friends Association and mum and dad together being responsible for coordinating and leading the army of parents and helpers to bring the College walkathon to fruition for each of the last six years. The walkathon has gone from success to success under their guidance and through the efficiencies they have introduced. When we consider that the walkathon over the last six years alone has probably raised something like a half a million dollars, this is an extraordinary effort from a mum and dad who themselves lead busy lives. And why have they committed themselves to the task? For your education boys. Our Champagnat Day Award to our Marist Family for 2012 goes to Adele and Alan Hamilton. Champagnat Day Award – Staff MemberWhen considering the next recipient of the Champagnat Day Award, a staff member, there are a number of Marist virtues that come readily to mind – passion for the work they do, humility and presence. By this last virtue, presence, we mean a person whose faith, whose manner and whose insight are given simply, freely and with a generosity that knows no bounds in the service of this Marist Community.

Our staff awardee is a passionate, knowledgeable exponent of the subject he teaches. Boys in his classes and colleagues who work alongside him, recognise in this

Page 4: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

From the Headmaster Continued...

person a mastery of the subject, indeed a deep appreciation and love for the subject he has taught his entire career.

Whether in the classroom, the staff study or the training ground our staff awardee is known and appreciated as a person of great humility, simplicity and modesty – those most Marist hallmarks of being. Staff and students alike see in our awardee a person with a delightful sense of humour, a self-effacing attitude, a trustworthy, caring and above all respectful man who so easily puts others at ease and always, others before himself.

Well taught lessons, love of his subject, running around the streets in the early mornings and the paddocks in the late afternoon, a notable sportsman himself, subject assistance to those boys who need it outside of class time, a colleague loved and respected by so many, a man of intelligence but above all one of gentleness and compassion. Our staff awardee brings to life what it is we mean when we say we strive to live in the way of Mary. There are few of Champagnat’s qualities that are not readily evident in the life and manner of our staff awardee.

I am pleased to announce that the staff recipient of the Champagnat Day Award for 2012 is Mr Peter Lehman.

Champagnat Day Award - StudentThe Champagnat Day Award is open to any student in our College. This year the award goes to a Year 12 student.

The awardee is known for his gentleness and consistent hard work. Much of his work is of a largely hidden nature. Unless you are directly involved you would not know the work this young man does behind the scenes. Well respected by all who encounter him, staff, peers, students and including younger students who he goes out of his way to help, our awardee demonstrates the Marist way of doing things quietly, and with total reliability. Our awardee’s Head of House commented that he would trust the student to do any job asked of him and he knows it would be done well without the need to check. Often times our awardee’s commitment to the task sees him take himself away from the fun of the group to ensure that he carries out his responsibilities faithfully. He is well known for offering to be of assistance in a variety of ways and areas in College life. Those who know him well recognise his quiet, laconic sense of humour, so reflective of his country background. Our student awardee for 2012 is Tom Copley.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

End oF TErMFirst semester has drawn to a close for the boys. Staff are still at school completing corrections and reports. The end of the first semester is an important time for rest. That’s what we all need to do.

TErM 3Term 3 commences for the boys on Tuesday 10 July. We will be having commencement liturgies during the first week with a theme of Opportunity. All boys are reminded to avail themselves of the opportunity of returning to Marist on 10 July in possession of:

• Good grooming - which will involve a haircut for some.• Winter uniform in good order including blazers for Years 11 and 12 worn to and from school every

day. Holidays are a great time for dry cleaning.• Good manners to everyone.• A renewed commitment to punctuality.• A fervent desire to treat other people as they would like to be treated.

No school is perfect but if we all adhere to what I’ve suggested, we will be very close!

Boarding ViSiTSOn 14 June we visited boarding families in Warwick. Many thanks for a wonderful catch up. We will be travelling to Moree over the first weekend of the holidays - 23 June, St George - 24 June and Dalby on 25 June.

Many thanks to Mrs Kim Taylor who organises these visits to our families in these towns.

JUbILeeSOn Sunday 24 June Marist Brothers from the Sydney and Melbourne Provinces will celebrate 25, 50 and 60 year of commitment to religious life. Special congratulations to Br Adrian Story and Br Dominic O’Sullivan who both will celebrate Golden Jubilees (50 years of religious life).

rESignaTionMr Peter DeVoss has resigned his position at the College effective from the end of this semester. Peter joined the staff at Marist in 1987 and has taught many boys over those twenty five and a half years. I would like to congratulate Peter and thank him for that wonderful commitment to the College.

STAff on LeAvePlease be aware of staff going on leave at the end of the term:

• Mrs Janice Minihan will commence maternity leave and will return in Term 3 2013. Our prayers and best wishes to Janice and David for the birth of their baby.

Assistant Head (Mission)

Our Mass for the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat on Wednesday 6 June developed the idea above through reflection on the Pentecost reading and the Disciples’ encounter with the Risen Jesus on the walk to Emmaus. It was a wonderful ceremony for the College community to gather and reflect on the gifts of a Marist education and the grace granted each of us as sons and daughters of St Marcellin. Chief Celebrant for the mass was Bishop Bill Morris, with Fr Harry Moore sm, Fr Aidan Carvil sm and Fr Pat Doran from St Michael’s Dorrington concelebrating.

Special guests were Br Adrian Story, from the Junior school, celebrating his Golden Jubilee, 50 years a Brother and recent past staff member, Br Dominic O’Sullivan also celebrating 50 years of committed service to the Marist Brothers. Old boy from 1984, Br Michael Callinan was also present with his parents Frank and Lynne to celebrate his Silver Jubilee, 25 years a Marist Brother. Br Michael spoke with the students during mass about the possibility of them hearing God’s call to vocation as a Brother. He was well received.

Mass was followed by a lunch provided to all staff and students and then an afternoon of games and activities to celebrate our life together in this Marist community. A special moment in our Mass was the awarding of the Champagnat Day Awards to Marist community members – Adele and Alan Hamilton, P & F members and convenors of the College walkathon; teaching staff member Peter Lehman and Year 12 student, Tom Copley. These people from our school community were congratulated on being exemplars of the virtues of St Marcellin. The citations for the awards are recorded in the Headmaster’s section of this newsletter.

YEar 12 rETrEaTSThe Year 12 retreats are scheduled for next term, Wednesday 18 to Friday 20 July, at one of five sites. Parents of Year 12 students have been sent a letter outlining the details and what students need to bring on retreat. Please send the Health Information forms and any other items to Mrs Denise Freney in the RE Office as soon as possible. Student groups and sites will be posted at Student Administration during the first week of Term 2. Mrs Freney can be contacted on 3858 4534 or [email protected] for further information on the retreats.

WALK foR InnoCenTSCongratulations and thanks to Mr Gerard Monsour, staff and students of Ignatius House and all those who contributed to this year’s Walk for Innocents – a total of $4,862.00 was raised. An incredible amount that will go a long way in Pailin in Cambodia.

Over the duration of participating in this sport, Josh has competed not only at local, state and national level, but has also represented Australia. Josh competed in the ITF World Championships in Korea 2010 where he claimed two medals. Josh won a bronze medal in sparring and a gold medal in team power-breaking. Josh’s success in Korea has given him the drive and motivation to increase his training in the hopes of winning Gold for Australia this year in Canada. Hopefully his persistence and dedication to his training will see him realise his dream. Since 2005, Josh has remained undefeated in sparring and hopes to continue the trend in Canada. Josh is the current world champion in his division and is keen to represent his country and defend his title. Richie is the current Australian champion in his division and is also very keen to represent his country. This is also the first father and son team to represent Australia at this event. Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning)YeAR 11 SUbJeCT ChAngeSYear 11 students have the opportunity to make necessary subject changes up until the end of the first week back in Term 3. The work they have completed in Semester One is generally formative and provides the content and skills required to complete the subject successfully in Year 12. Students who are not experiencing success after their final exams may wish to reconsider one of their choices at the beginning of next term. If that is the case they will need to put careful thought into whether improved study habits may mean they could continue the subject or if that course of action is out of the question, whether they would be able to put in the extra work necessary to catch up on the work already covered in a new subject. All students are strongly encouraged to keep subject changes to a minimum but if it is necessary, changing now rather than at the end of the year is recommended. Subject change forms can be located on the student intranet site and can be lodged with me before the end of the first week back. Students are reminded that subject changes are not always possible due to timetable constraints and current class sizes.

All Year levels - Special ProvisionStudents with a diagnosed intellectual, emotional or physical impairment or difficulty may qualify for a change of conditions for assessment. Recent documentation from a medical professional or similar, should to be lodged at the Studies Office or forwarded through your son’s Head of House, to qualify for special provisions. Students who wish to qualify for Special provision for the Queensland Core Skills test in 2013 or beyond are required to have documentation dated no earlier than January of the year before.

Music NewsChInA ToUR ConfIRMeD foR 2013To maintain the College’s high standard of musical performance, leading music students from the College’s music program participate in a variety of tours. These tours provide students with a wide range of musical and non-musical activities and have proved to be enjoyable and rewarding experiences for all involved. In the past the Music Department has toured to various national and international destinations including Sydney, Outback and Central Queensland, Cairns, Melbourne, Fiji and New Zealand.

After consultation with the parents and College Leadership Team we are excited to announce that the Music Department will be attending the Tutti World Youth Music Festival in Beijing China from the 6th to the 13th of July 2013. The second Tutti World Youth Music Festival Beijing will be an exciting week long event for school age musicians and singers from around the World. It will provide the opportunity to enhance and showcase their talents in a non-competitive environment and through their love of music toreach out and build friendships across the cultural diversity of the world. The festival will involve orchestras, string orchestras, symphonic wind bands, brass ensembles, jazz ensembles and choral groups. All participants will experience performances by other attending musicians, faculty members, visiting Chinese musicians and other artistic performers. Woven throughout the event is a significant cultural exposure program that takes in all the significant historical venues around Beijing. More details on the proposed tour will be sent home to the parents and boys in Term 3.

JoUSTLast Thursday night the Draney Theatre was transformed into a medieval jousting arena for the Year 5's performance of "Joust". This mini-musical involved the entire 120 Year 5 boys who sang and acted out thestory of King Arthur. The boys presented two performances to very appreciative audiences. Special congratulations must go to Jack Ingram (5 Green) who played the part of Arthur and not only memorised an enormous number of lines but also sang two wonderful solos. This was a magical production that gave the boys an opportunity to experience the joy of performing in a musical.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESHello to you all again. In the last Newsletter, we considered the career of one of the most estimable of all present day Ashgrove “legends”, Richard Ward, Deputy Headmaster par excellence. This piece of musing will consider just what an enormous contribution he has made to the College and its students when he is NOT doing strictly “Deputy things.” His extra-curricular work has been prodigious, to the point where it staggers the imagination…

As with all our other “legends” at the College, Richard’s commitment to events outside the classroom or office has been spectacular. He was one of the instigators of computer education at Ashgrove (along with Peter Spensley and Brothers John Joyce and Kevin Ryan), and spent many hours of his private time in those pioneering efforts. In sport he coached cricket, tennis, and cross country teams, and then with his computer expertise took on the role of scoring for AIC swimming, track & field and cross country carnivals. He has contributed countless hours in his career to membership of committees and school organizations, including the P & F, the Old Boys, the Foundation, the Boys Issues Committee, and the Co Curricular Committee. He was for many years the District Panel Chairman for Maths A, and was a curriculum planner who helped introduce the Core Skills Test (CST) to Queensland schooling. He has attended literally hundreds of school dances, formals, and dinners, and organized most of them. He is a king-pin in the Senior Graduation ceremony each year, and has been since far off 1992. The wonderful last-day extravaganzas that many Old Boys remember so fondly have largely been Richard’s doing. Yet again, Richard (like Peter Spensley) has an unsuspected side to him in that he has a hankering after greasepaint, but not on the stage itself. He has been involved in many school musicals over the years as either producer or backstage coordinator, including Joseph and his Technicolour Dream Coat, Oliver, Sweeney Todd, Godspell, Fiddler on the Roof, Little Shop of Horrors, and Guys and Dolls. Similarly, Richard could not resist the lure of the College’s participation in the Rock Eisteddfod, and was a backstage coordinator of the campaigns of 1999, 2001, and 2003, being delighted like the rest of the school community when Ashgrove’s entry Love Story (not the classic, but a boy in love with his motorbike) won the Queensland section of the competition in 2006. Just because he could, Richard also held up his hand to edit the Blue & Gold annual magazine from 1985 to 1992, an arduous procedure if ever there was one. Even in “down” times, Richard doesn’t escape the College, witness the fact that he is a SONY Camp volunteer every year, has been a team leader for the Barbecues with the Homeless since their inception, went on the Marist Hermitage Tour to France and Italy in 2007, and has been part of student Immersions to Cambodia 5 times. (Editor: Enough, I say, ENOUGH !!) You would have to ask, given that memorable list, does Richard ever get tired? Well, yes he does and he confesses that his toughest times were in the early 21st Century, when even his workaholic tendencies were strained to the limit. The problem’s been solved now (thankfully according to Richard) since two more members were added to the CLT to take over parts of his role. As he says,“Much more civilized now – only 6 am starts weekdays and 6 days a week.” (Editor: Sometimes I sits and shakes me head, and sometimes I just sits.)

Are there any Wardy stories I can tell? Remarkably few, actually, for the good reason that, as Derek Cameron said when I asked him to delve into his not-inconsiderable memory bank of College life, “What, Wardy stuff-ups? Nah, never happen. He’s too bloody efficient!!!” Richard himself remembers his most embarrassing moment as being the recipient of a “Cop-a-gram” on one of his birthdays, with a particularly asinine individual “arresting” him in the staffroom – Richard and Queen Victoria had something in common on that day, for it was very obvious that he was “not amused.” (In fact, if looks could kill, the aforementioned idiot would have been frazzled and deep-fried on the spot.)

Graham Lawson recalls Richard telling him about a conversation that took place between Richard and the newly appointed Headmaster for 1991, Brother Terry Heinrich, and it is a conversation that reveals much about the character of both men. Trying to “get a handle” on

Page 23: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESa new situation, Brother Terry asked Richard what he did around the place. Richard began to explain, and about half an hour later, Terry facetiously enquired what he was paid for all of this. Graham takes up the story: “Richard replied that he was getting the normal teacher’s income for a teacher of his experience. Terry was flabbergasted, thinking that Richard was pulling his leg. When Richard insisted that what he was saying was correct Terry immediately went to Ray Rogers (Ashgrove’s Bursar) and gave Richard a wage commensurate with his extraordinary input. Richard was not saying that he deserved this, he was just musing about how incredibly just Brother Terence was and is. He was amazed that Terry would immediately recognise the situation and do something about it. Richard certainly deserves more than he gets, but then he would be the last person to actually think about it, let alone claim it.” And that story really encapsulates what being Marist is all about...

Now, the man himself, not just a list of his doings and contributions, impressive though they are. What makes him tick? Perhaps fortunately, he is one of those rare specimens of humanity who are born optimistic – to him, the glass is always half full, not half consumed. He says, “I have a great job – always interesting, sometimes stressful, working with great people, and my relationships with students are generally positive. No two days are the same, and it’s rare for me not to look forward to the day ahead.” He remembers the warm welcome he received in his first year from the Ashgrove staff, and in particular he thanks Michael Gubbins, Peter Spensley and Derek Cameron for being his “mentors” in his fledgling days at the College. In later years, when he was more of an administrator, he acknowledges the sage advice he received from Denis Callaghan, the “Mr Chips” of Ashgrove. Of the Brothers, Richard particularly admired Terry Heinrich (for reasons already explained) and John Maguire, and he has fond memories of his Co-Deputy for many years, David Robertson. He says he also can’t pass up the chance to thank his friend and professional assistant, Mrs Eve McCormack, for all the wonderful work she’s done over the years. He is now officially a Catholic, though he wasn’t at the outset, and it’s hard to avoid the conclusion, as stated already, that this owes much to the co-joining of the Marist ethos and Richard’s personal philosophy. As he puts it, “I try to live the Marist charism as best I can – not a bad set of values on which to base your life.” What gives him a feeling of achievement? “I prefer working in the engine room and gaining the satisfaction of seeing the place run smoothly with an appearance of effortlessness.” So many students and teachers at the College have been blessed because of that philosophy. In the 34 years since 1979, the College has seen the best of times, and as with any organization of such longevity, times that were not quite so good. Through it all, thick and thin, Richard has been an essential part of the fabric that has kept things together – the glue or cement that keeps the heart of Ashgrove beating. His patience, his determination, his friendliness, his example and his humour make up a character admirable in every conceivable way. I’ll conclude with his favourite quotation, by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Or, as Richard himself puts it:

“It’s all about perseverance and pushing through each day.”

With him in the “engine room” we know we can’t go far wrong, and God willing, the words “finished with main engines” is in the far distant future.

P&F NewsDear Parents, As the semester draws to a close, we still have many people to thank!

YeAR nIne DInneR – APRIL 27My sincere apologies – with the lead up to the Walkathon I neglected to acknowledge the Year 9 “dinner team”! Thanks to Julie Crimmins, Shara Mohr, Sue De Stefani and Liz Balaam who organized the evening, to Clinton Mohr who was MC and Tim Balaam who did the trivia. The Cyprian Pavilion looked magnificent and a great night was had by all!

Our sincere thanks to Jo Darwin and her team of Catherine Henley, Evelyn Smart, Katrina Price, Therese Taylor, Bernadette McPhee, Louise Treston, Stacey Fabris, Angela Whyte, Denise and Martin McHugh and Leigh Perkins who was MC for the evening.

P&f boARDeR’S SUPPoRT I would just like to once again thank the following parents for their generosity in supporting our boarding community during Term 2:

• To all the wonderful cooks on the afternoon tea roster, thank you for the huge volume of delicious food you have provided each fortnight.

• To all the parents who have transported boarders to weekend sporting fixtures each week.• To the parents who have been helping with tutoring our boarders and to those who have recently

offered their help for next term.• To the talented group of mothers who assisted with making Mothers’ Day cards.• To the brave souls who ventured out on June 2nd for the Night on the Green in the gym, despite the

atrocious weather, you are amazing.

We are still in desperate need of some extra tutors for some of our boys, if anyone has a spare hour, or knows of anyone who may be interested, please contact me as soon as possible.I wish you all a relaxing break over the holidays and look forward to your continued support next term.Kind regards,Michelle Carmody

SporTS CanTEEnSOur last canteen of the season on 9th June took around $12,000 for the day and about $900 of that was from the Coffee Shop. We didn’t stop cooking and frying all day. Between the canteen on the Flats and McMahon Oval we went through 120 bacon and egg muffins, 500 burgers, 250 sausages on bread, 180kg of hot chips. The fridges were emptied of drinks and constantly refilled.

Thank you to these parents for helping on the Year 8 day (some are not Year 8 parents but saw that help was needed and came in to help: Ray Nelson (Year 12), Kerryn Rowcliffe, Narelle Rowan, Kath Gardiner, Noel and Susie O’Farrell, Barb Kiernan, Jane Carroll, Jane Marr, Liz Lemon, Ros Midgley, Karen Sheppard, Terry and Cath Madden, Thea McArthur (Year 12), Chris Behan (Year 11), Brendan Devine, Richard DeWaal, Melissa Bailey, Treena Della-Vedova, Julie Hutchinson, Steve Pyle, Julia Churchman, Noel Rafter, our hot chip masters Jo Collins, Jo Hansen and Joe Pirlo (Year 11 Boarding) and Stephen and Jen Rafter (Coordinator) and Ewen and Deb for helping after the Flats closed and counting the takings. Jen would also like to thank everyone for your support and putting in all the hard work on the day.

Year 6 parents were on duty during the morning on the Flats with Deanna Heinke and Cathy Roach co-ordinating. Thanks to Angela Bonning, Steven Toomey, Greg Lynch, Di, Sally Cruickshank, Sue Wiseman, Debbie Birchley, Julia B, Jazz Connolly. Then following up with senior school parents: Barb Harvey, Michelle Carmody, Christine French, Jane Marr, Maddie French, Bridget Harkin, Ewen Thompson and Deb Moloney.

Thank you all sincerely for all the help that you gave on the day and especially to those parents who ended up staying for most of the day. We couldn’t have done it without you! The canteens that are open during the rugby/football season are always very hectic especially in the afternoon and if everyone put in just one hour on their rostered day it would certainly make for a less stressful and more enjoyable day for everyone. But we always manage to have fun and a laugh to get us through. Remember “Always look on the bright side of life”.

Thank you also to Ewen Thompson (P & F Treasurer) and Deb Moloney (P & F V-P) for helping in the canteens each week and the mammoth job of counting the takings and reorganising the float every week.Coffee Shop: The coffee shop certainly won’t stop grinding with takings on average of $900 per week. That’s a lot of tampering and frothing.

Thank you very much to Paula McLoughlin, Kate Knynenburg and Bernadette McPhee for operating the coffee shop each week. Also to Peter and Paula McLoughlin and the boarders who help set up in the early hours of the morning.

Apart from selling coffee, tea and hot chocolate in the coffee shop there was also an array of delicious muffins, biscuits and slices. Gary Keown organised his Hospitality boys to make these each week and I believe they enjoyed making them. Thank you Gary and boys for your support in doing this for the coffee shop.

Once again, thank you to all the parents who have volunteered their time to help in the canteens and a special thank you to the Boarding parents who found time to volunteer as well and also to the Staff of Marist. All your help no matter how great or small is always greatly appreciated. I hope you all have a safe and relaxing holiday and are rejuvenated for next term. All the best.Roberta Bannah.
