From the Headmaster

Dear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

A Special Christmas Message for Us

Out walking, Richard Croucher passed a chain link fence with the sign ‘Nursery’ boldly displayed. He was surprised to hear a tiny voice from behind some bushes clearly proclaiming, “I love you.” As he spotted a young girl on a swing smiling at him through pearly white teeth he thought, how beautiful!

It brought on a feeling of warmth until a doubt reared its ugly head. Hang on, she doesn’t even know me. Further reflection led to the conclusion that this did not matter; she was not evaluating Richard, she was sharing her outlook on life; she was a ‘love person’ and so could love Richard independent of his response.

I re-read the story with interest because I have trouble in working out what is the consequence of having a God who is all-powerful, eternal, and perfect and who repeatedly insists that he loves us ‘unconditionally’. Does this really mean what it says? I think God would be pleased with the little girl giving an example in her innocence of how he relates to human beings.

When God says, ‘My love for you is unconditional’ it is a revelation about himself; it does not depend on our response. God loves us because of who God is, not because of anything we do or don’t do. God has told us through his prophet Jeremiah; “I have loved you with an everlasting love”(Jer. 31:3).

God took this ‘everlasting love’ Creation plan a step further when he sent his only begotten son Jesus down to earth to give an example of how we can best live. Human beings generally are slow to let go and believe in truths that don’t fit in with their self-centred attitude to life so God put into action his top of the range solution and sent down his son, Jesus.

Not only would Jesus be human but he would teach us how to obtain this best possible life. Since this was such a challenge and so contrary to the accepted ambitions of human beings, he took care to lead from the front. As St. Paul writes: He was like us in everything but sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

For most of the time Jesus lived hidden and unknown so that when he began to preach his ‘Good News’ message even his friends and relatives had trouble seeing anything more than just a carpenter from the backward town of Nazareth.

We tend to create gods in our own image, gods who could be useful to us. If we want power and control over our enemies, our gods will be warlike. If we need forgiveness our god will be one who needs appeasing; some church leaders want the god of the Pharisees and have a stem and legalistic attitude so life for them is governed by authority and rules with love coming a bad second. But do we have a role in a Creation built on unconditional love?

Most definitely; for Creation to reach the level God intended, he had to give us freedom because only free beings can love at this level. When Sammy bought his latest heart-throb a diamond ring he thought she would love him but he was wrong. Money cannot buy love; she loved the ring but not Sammy. Let us make this Christmas special by giving ourselves a meaningful present. Stand in front of the Crib, enter the uncomplicated world of the little girl on the swing and join her in telling the Baby Jesus with great sincerity, “I love you!”

Wishing you Blessings and Peace for Christmas

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlinHeadmaster

Headmaster’s NotesCongRAtulAtIonsCongratulations to lucian Berkovich-Robles, Jack Donnelly, and nicholas Murray who represented the College with distinction at the final of the ESU Public Speaking competition. Marist was the only school to enter students into the Intermediate (Year 9 and 10) competition, so in effect the boys were competing against one another. They each presented a five-minute prepared speech and a two-minute impromptu speech.

The adjudication panel (comprised of some very distinguished academics in the fields of speech and rhetoric) gave thorough feedback to each participant, and had plenty of praise for each of our boys. They awarded first place to Jack (earning him a trophy and $250 in prize money) and runner-up to Nick (trophy and $100 prize money).

YeAR 12 gRADuAtIonSincere thanks to all who will be involved in enabling our Year 12 boys to graduate tomorrow. So many staff contribute so much to the Prize Giving, the Graduation Mass, the Farewell on McMahon Oval and the Graduation Dinner. It certainly reminds the class of 2012 how important they are to us all. I must single out Mr Richard Ward, Mrs Eve McCormack and Mrs Kim Horwood for the huge commitment they make to these ceremonies.

ACt FoR KIDsMore than 250 teenage longboard riders gathered in north Brisbane during the September school holidays to ride the road in an epic ‘Holiday Freeride’ and raise funds for ACT for Kids.

The enormous event was organised by five high school students, Harry O’Neil (12I), Maximus Heaton, Jordan Fabris (11G), Elliott Peet (9E) and Jacob Manning (11R), who wanted to share their passion for free-boarding while supporting kids less fortunate.

More than 170 teens entered competitions on the day, raising more than $1,000 from registration fees which will help kids and families affected by child abuse and neglect.

They managed to recruit an astounding 19 sponsors for the event, including Red Bull, Goodtime Surf &

NURTURING THE WHOLE STUDENT

At the moment, Catholic schools are funded at 20 per cent less than government schools. With parents paying fees, this gap shrinks to 10 per cent.

With that 10 per cent, every effort is made to make sure that each student’s learning needs are maximised, so they can reach their full potential and achieve their best.

Catholic schools encourage the importance of community. Principals, teachers, staff and parents work together to develop the whole child: spiritually, emotionally, academically, physically, socially and culturally.

Students in Catholic schools are encouraged to engage with their communities, serve others and embrace social justice for all.

Catholic schools need government funding to build strong communities that contribute to a better society.

News from the Head of MissionMISSION @ MARIST 2012This newsletter brings us to the end of 2012 and prompts us to reflect on the year that was. We have enjoyed a wonderful year of generous commitment from students and staff in the Mission area of the College. The dozens of MATES awards given to students this year, including the presentation of 16 PLATINUM Awards to our Year 12 students at Graduation, testifies to the spirit of Christian solidarity and service which boys have taken so seriously this year. My thanks and congratulations to them for this.

I would also like to pay tribute to the members of the Mission Team, that group of staff whose primary responsibility is the animation of Mission @ Marist. To Fr Pius Jones sm, our College Chaplain, Secondary Head of Religious Education Mrs Louise Underwood and Junior Coordinator, Mr Michael Connolly, Administrative Assistants Mrs Denise Freney and Mrs Liz Spry and Campus Ministers Mrs Mena McLean and Br Mark Fordyce, thank you for your inspiration and dedication to the Marist vision of “making Jesus Christ known and loved”.

It is fitting to single out Br Mark who has unfortunately (for Ashgrove) been appointed to Marcellin College Bulleen in Melbourne as part of the formation of the Australian Province of the Marist Brothers. In his four years here Br Mark has brought to the Ashgrove community energy, innovation, inspiration and expertise. Br Mark’s commitment to the development of the MATES program, especially the immersion experiences for students has been particularly noteworthy. Likewise, his creativity in liturgical experiences and times of celebration has added considerably to the life of the school and the sense of belonging, so important in a community as large as ours. We thank Br Mark for his generous commitment to Marist values and for going the extra mile with those who from time to time have needed support and encouragement. We wish Br Mark well as he takes on new challenges in 2013.

From the Marist document, Evangelizers in the Midst of Youth, comes a reminder of what we have aimed to achieve in 2012.

We dream about and are working to educate young people who will transform society, building and proclaiming the Reign of God in their own situations in life. The great challenge for young people is to listen to Christ’s voice in the midst of so many others. His invitation is a personal one: “Come and follow me.” (103)

News from the College ChaplainAt the Boarders Mass on Sunday 11th November, Archbishop Mark Coleridge conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 7 boys: William McVeigh, Ben Perkins, Tyson Cooper, Zac Hancock, Jerome Pang, Alexander Hamilton and Christian Hamilton. The Mass took place in the Chapel of Marist College Ashgrove. Families and friends gathered with staff and boarders for a sacred and joy-filled occasion. Katherine Gavranich, along with Sacha Gibbs-McPhee, Michael Wing, Joe Kneipp, Josh Curtis, Nick Keogh Peel, Zac Ether, and Lliam Wilder were our musicians for the Mass. We congratulate those boys who received this Sacrament and pray that they will continue to be graced through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

News from the College Chaplain Continued...

CSYMALast week Christian Nobleza and Laurent Dubois from Marist Ministries came to the College to spend some time with the Year 11 CSYMA group on Leadership. The afternoon and evening concluded with Mass and then the boys enjoyed some pizza together. Christian and Laurent challenged the boys to think about leadership in the broad context of each person having potential as a leader, and that it is not something that simply comes with wearing a badge.

On Friday the Year 10 CSYMA group had a day with Brother Tony Leon. Tony focussed on the leader as one who works with others. The faith leader is called by Jesus, has a relationship with Jesus and works within the context of community. The boys, through games and reflections, discovered a little more about how achievable goals can be when they work together, rather than attempting to solve problems alone. I thank Brother Tony, Christian and Laurent for their time and creative input with the boys.

Please keep in your prayer Liam Kennedy, one of our Year 12 students, who is quite unwell at this time.

With every best wish.In Jesus and Mary,Fr Pius Jones, SM

Br Mark Farrelly Resource Centre NewsBOOK HIRE/LIBRARY BORROWING REMINDERWe would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that all Book Hire and recreational reading items are due to be returned to the College by 20 November or on completion of exams. Year 12 should have their books returned before they leave the College on Graduation Day (Friday 16th).

Book Hire items can be returned directly to Book Hire or to Senior Library. The vast majority of texts will be needed by new groups of students at the very beginning of 2013 and in the interests of fairness we need to be able to offer ALL students set texts for each area of study. Parents may like to ensure boys are aware of their borrowings and their obligation to return these items – emails are sent regularly to students regarding overdue items. Thank you for your support in this matter.

MARIST BOOK LOvERS' BOOK CLUBLast Wednesday was our last gathering for the year and was enjoyed by all who came along. The books generated engaging discussion and were accompanied with simple but tasty refreshments. Being busy people no one managed to read all four books on our list but each of us has added to ‘must read’ list.

Over the Christmas break we are tackling the following selection and there is no expectation that all books have to be read. If you fancy reading one of these novels and would like to join us in 2013, you would be most welcome.

WHEN: Wednesday 6th February 2013 7.30pm WHERE: Senior Library Books for February – Any/all of the following: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel The Laughing Clowns by William McInnes The Light Between Oceans by M L Stedman Enquiries/RSVP: [email protected] We wish everyone a relaxing summer of reading, a Holy Christmas and a very Happy New Year. FROM THE ARCHIVESHello to you all again. This will be the second article on the period of Brother Christopher Wade as Headmaster of MCA from 1983 to 1990. In the first, we looked at developments in that period in the school generally, coming to the conclusion that by 1990 the College stood proudly in its Golden Jubilee year - in virtually every way, it was in the vanguard of education. As the longest serving Headmaster in Ashgrove’s history, Chris Wade had played a large part in its success, and the article hopefully gave some insight into his many abilities and qualities. One aspect of his period, however, we left untouched, largely because it was so extensive that it warranted writing about it in a separate article. In a speech at a staff gathering to farewell Brother Chris in 1990, Ashgrove “legend” Denis Callaghan referred to “Brother Chris the Builder”, and when one considers how much the school changed physically between 1983 and 1990, it has to be said that Denis – as usual – was right on the mark. The two changes in school infrastructure that stand out most are the construction of a new primary school in 1983-84, the Brother Ignatius Centre, and the long-desired and hoped for multi-purpose centre/gymnasium in 1988-89, the Champagnat Centre. They were, however, only part of many other building projects on a scale unprecedented at Ashgrove.

In his 1983 end of year Report, Brother Chris made reference to the “building program which has begun at the school – a project involving the equivalent of about 12 extra classrooms, to solve our long-standing accommodation problem.” This building expansion would be on the site originally designated for the ill-fated Senior College proposed for the co-educational merging with Mt St Michael’s in 1981-82. When internal opposition to co-education forced the Provincial Council to acknowledge it would not proceed in 1982, the area was open for an altogether different purpose – a dedicated Primary School on the Ashgrove property. Hitherto the primary and secondary students had shared the western classroom block, and with the school population ever-expanding, space for education was again a vital issue, as it had been back in Brother Ferrer Robinson’s time in the 1950s. Again the school would have to build, and again the school would be in debt – but this was an old story in Ashgrove history by now.

Under the direction of Brother Chris, Architects Ainsley Bell and Murchison drew up the plans, construction company Civil & Civic won the tender, and Project Manager, the stalwart Mr Ivan Harris, co-ordinated liaison from the College side. The result, on 29th July 1984, was the blessing and official opening of the Brother Ignatius Centre by Archbishop Francis Rush – it was fitting that the original Headmaster of Ashgrove, who presided over the first-ever parade of 70 students at the College in January 1940, gave his name to the new primary school, which could accommodate 330 students and 15 staff. This dedicated primary school now allowed the secondary students to use the entire western classroom block, and also made possible a much improved arrangement of homerooms with fewer students per class for roll-marking. The Brother Ignatius Centre has since expanded even more with the addition of its own Resource Centre (1996), so as a school it is a self-sufficient entity.

Further building was already in prospect in 1984, however, as Brother Chris remarked in his annual Report after referring to the advantages the Brother Ignatius Centre had brought to the College: “We are intending to build new staff accommodation if our application for a grant is successful and we are anxiously awaiting the outcome.” Fast forward a year to 1985, and Chris remarks in acerbic tones on his “dissatisfaction with the Schools Commission (the funding body for education), particularly in their handling of a capital grants application lodged by the College…this has meant that no major project has taken place this year.” Government funds were not forthcoming, and for most schools this would have been the end of any building project, but the College was not just any school, and it had Brother Christopher Wade for its Headmaster. The 1986 Blue & Gold, which has three introductory pages of colour photos dedicated to the opening ceremony for a “refurbished” Administration Block and staff quarters, is proof of that. Chris details the issue in his 1986 Report: “There was no question but that the work was needed, for we had very little teacher accommodation, and the clerical staff had virtually no space and even though both groups worked heroically, conditions were affecting efficiency.” The Schools Commission proved “incapable or unwilling” to help, so the choice was to borrow funds (again!), or “to watch the College

Page 25: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESdeteriorate in standards. Such a choice being no choice we decided to build.” The administration and staff sections beneath the Library were gutted for refurbishment, and extensions on both levels constructed westwards.

The result, as far as teaching and clerical staff were concerned, was Paradise – “We now have a very functional and pleasant administrative centre, a beautiful common room for teachers, and beautiful staff studies where preparation and correction can be done under ideal conditions,” Chris continues in his 1986 Report. ( Not that the makeover was easy, or pleasant, for the Library, in addition to being used by the students, became the Admin centre, offices, teachers’ preparation area, and common room. Brother Chris had his office in a corner of the same Library behind plywood walls, and printing and clerical photocopying was done in the Undercroft near the Tuckshop!!! Conditions, with all the noise of a construction site, were terrible, but short term pain became long term gain with the end result.) The staff and clerical quarters had gone from inadequate and cramped to palatial – and the envy of other schools and staffs.

In the 1987 Blue & Gold, Chris reports that “We didn’t build this year,” but then lists an extra laboratory as being constructed, along with “a splendid refurbishment of the Tuckshop, which must make it one of the best anywhere”, new premises provided for music tuition, new boilers installed, and a new parking area created by the Men’s Committee. Landscaping in the Main Yard was also undertaken. Not bad for not building. Significantly, Chris makes reference for the first time to a “Gymnasium Committee who have spent much time preparing a brief for the initial design concept of a Physical Education Centre…..it is still not known what the cost of such a project would be, nor whether we could fund it.” The building which was to symbolise Chris as “The Builder” was on the horizon.

The idea of a Gymnasium which could double as an Assembly Hall, a display area, a functions room, etc, was not new – as far back as the legendary Brother Peter Carrick in the 1950s, plans had been made for such a building. Its great advantage was that it could be used in all weather conditions, so events like the Inaugural Mass and Speech Night would not be at the mercy of the climate, and boarders would have a large area for recreation and games even if it was wet. In the time of Brother Alexis Turton, fund-raising was begun for a Multi Purpose Hall, but it was not until the time of Chris Wade that Jupiter would align with Mars and the project would go ahead. And it would only be possible because the school asked its students, staff, parents, Old Boys, friends and supporters to help, in time-honoured Ashgrove tradition, and the school “Family” responded as it always had – magnificently. Chris made his case for the Champagnat Centre in an article in which he stated, “My contention is that Ashgrove needs this building and it deserves this building…..Ashgrove has called on its family spirit in the past and that family spirit has never failed. I believe that if we call on it again (in 1988), the answer will be the same as it has always been before.” These would prove prescient words.

The College decided that a fund-raising campaign, which would be matched by a comparable Commonwealth Government input, should have as its target a figure of $750,000, a staggering sum in the late 1980s. It was designated the Ash Appeal, and employed a financial professional as its head: otherwise participation in the Appeal was on a voluntary basis. Various committees were set up, with sub-committees appointed. Each group had its own target audience and financial goals and organised its own meeting agenda. Within this overall context, there would be meetings of the whole organisation periodically to assess progress and to amend goals. It began in July 1988, and as Chris joyfully reported in December, “our hopes and aspirations have been fully justified, and our doubts and fears have vanished.” At the time he wrote, the total pledged had exceeded $1,000,000, and it would ultimately be over $1,300,000. In Canvas of Dreams, Mark Farrelly was moved to write that the total was “characterised by small yet generous gifts from ordinary families with mortgages and escalating interest-rate payments….the realisation of this project was due almost exclusively to the financial support of the College family. From their hip-pockets, people were proclaiming their belief in the enduring value of the education being offered at Marist.” Great believers in self-help like Brothers Ignatius and Cyprian, the giants of the past, must have been smiling……..

Page 26: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESConstruction began on the building in October 1988, and by the commencement of school in 1989, the framework towered over the western side of the property. Frequent wet weather did not delay construction, and the builders moved out in mid-April, with the outfitting and furnishing of the building following. In another reminder of the past, students and Brothers carried out the landscaping of the area together. Sunday 4th June was designated as Opening Day – not quite Champagnat Day but close enough – and in a great coup for the College, Chris had managed to induce the Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke, to be the principal guest, along with a long list of other dignitaries. An audience of about 3,500 enthusiastic people witnessed the opening by Mr Hawke, and the blessing by Ashgrove’s long-time patron, Archbishop Francis Rush. And somehow, in a “loaves and fishes” effort, everyone was served afternoon tea !!! Proud Old Boy Brian Lindsay, in an article in the 1989 Blue & Gold on the opening thought it “ a wonderful day which brought together all of the best elements of the College for an occasion full of spirit, of pride, of loyalty, and of gratitude.” Brian even deemed it the best day in the history of the College. (Just to deflate things a little, my outstanding personal memory is of watching Mr Hawke walking by, expertly “working” the crowd, followed by female trills of “Oh, he’s so charismatic!” A dark mutter came from a fellow staff member beside me – “You haven’t seen my budgie!!!” Obviously a Conservative voter.) Cynicism aside, it WAS a wonderful day……

And what of the person on whose watch this event had taken place? Brother Chris seemed quietly pleased with the day, but as usual it was only at the end of the year when he reflected in writing that his real pleasure became apparent: “ I am very glad to report that the building is living up to the label of Multi -Purpose. It is an examination centre, a fitness centre, an Assembly Hall, a dance studio, an art gallery, a Conference Centre, a theatre or a church depending on the occasion. And of course it is proving itself every day as a splendid venue for H & PE classes for all boys in the College.”

Brother Chris was now approaching the end of his tenure at Ashgrove. As already remarked, by 1990 he had served two years longer than any previous Headmaster, but right to the end he was still altering the campus: he remarked in the Blue & Gold that “we necessarily had a quieter year in 1990, (but) walkways linking buildings were extended, and the outdoor area between the junior dormitories and the dining rooms was completed.” The physical aspects of the campus were greatly altered from 1983 to 1990, and it was largely due to the determination and dynamism of Brother Christopher Wade that it had happened. What the student of 2012 takes for granted, going to Assembly every Wednesday in the Champagnat Centre, only became possible because Chris had the vision to see that it was necessary, and the talent and sense of history to involve his school community in the project. Denis dubbing him “Brother Chris the Builder” in his farewell speech in 1990 could not have been more apt. It was therefore totally appropriate that, when the next great wave of construction projects began at the College in the 21st century, what Chris had done was itself acknowledged with a building named after him, and for students in that building to be involved in two things very dear to him – The Brother Christopher Wade Music and Drama Centre.

This is the final piece of burbling for 2012. I hope you have enjoyed the offerings this year, both of individual “legends” and the chronological story of the College. The last two articles on Brother Chris were, I confess, the hardest I have had to work on since these chronicles began. I could not be totally dispassionate about them because my personal history at the College coincided with the events under discussion, and I necessarily had to try to avoid bias through putting MY slant on things. It was not an easy task. All subsequent articles on the history of the College will obviously have the same problem.

That said, it remains only to wish you all a safe, happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year, and that we meet again, God willing, in 2013.

Until then,

From the Archives

P&F NewsAs the school year rapidly draws to a close, the Executive of the P&F would like to extend its thanks to all those who have supported our ventures throughout the year.

Firstly, to those parents whose journey with the Marist College Ashgrove Marist Community is coming to an end – we thank you most sincerely for all the work you have done over the many years of your son’s education. Your efforts have ensured that our younger boys now enjoy wonderful facilities and resources. We wish you (and your sons) every success for the future and hope you will remember your years at the College with great fondness.

To the College staff, whether involved in teaching, administration or support services, we thank you for your dedication and all the many ‘behind the scenes jobs’ you do to make our endeavours successful. Our particular thanks go to Mr Peter McLoughlin, Mr Richard Ward, Mr Michael Druce and Mrs Kay Wells who are regular attendees at P&F meetings.

To our huge team of willing volunteers who assist each sub-committee, again your efforts are greatly appreciated. It is only with your assistance that we are able to contribute so actively to the College community.

On your behalf we would like to pass on our thanks to the conveners of each of the sub-committees who work tirelessly at different times to organize and enlist support for their ventures. Their enthusiasm has obviously been contagious as we are never short of volunteers when required!

We would like to make special mention of our retiring Treasurer, Ewen Thompson, and thank him for his tremendous service over the last 4 years. Not only has Ewen been instrumental in upgrading our accounting procedures, but he has also given freely of his time to assist at Year Dinners; sports canteens; gym dance supervisions; boarder committee functions and the tuckshop. Thanks for your great work Ewen!

We are pleased to welcome Kylie Dennis as our new Secretary, and Jim Hunter as Treasurer to the committee for 2012/2013.

I would also like to make special mention of the following.

Louise McGovern, Jacqui Cummins, Katrina Richards, Nicole Atcheson, Kylie Saint, Ilsa Sammut, Penny Holiday, Ewen Thompson, Wendy Mulcahy and Brendan Ryan for their dedication to the Year 11 Life Skills Program. This program runs weekly for 6 weeks and provides the Year 11 boarders the opportunity to learn valuable skills to help them in their life after Marist.

Also to Nicole Atcheson and Steve Toovey who give up one evening every week to tutor some of our Junior and Senior boys. There are so many parents who give generously and enthusiastically of themselves to offer support for our boarding community and I am so grateful to you all.

The boarders and their families also really appreciate your support as being a long way from home and loved ones can be very difficult and the little things that we all do for the boys make a big difference to their life here at the College. If anyone would like further information about the many ways you could be involved with our boarding community, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I would like to wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas with your families and I look forward to seeing you next year.

Kind regards,Michelle [email protected]

MARIST CARD DAY 2012 WRAP UPDue to the wonderful support of a fantastic and dedicated bunch of Marist mums (& dad), we have had another successful year of Marist Card Days at the College in 2012.

Each of the four Card Days this year was appreciated by the local community. Our success stems from the valued contributions of our group of volunteers and bakers.

Special thanks to the Marist Old Boys Association and the many Marist families for their donations of raffle prizes. A special thank you to Jen Rafter for her donation of a large box of goodies. Thank you also to Gary Keown and his Hospitality class for helping us set-up and then pack-up each event, and for their excellent baking that is always in demand.

Thank you to Marianne Wilkes (each week for the whole morning), Margot Rasmussen, Greg Eddy, Therese Eddy, Sharyn Burgin and Mark Darwin for helping with the BBQ and clean up. 2012 MUSICThis year has been another outstanding year for co-curricular Music at Ashgrove. The College’s choirs, bands and orchestra have successfully competed in festivals throughout the year, gaining numerous platinum, gold and silver awards. These consistent awards are evidence of the quality of our Music department and recognition of it as being one of Queensland’s leading music programs. Following these results the College received in June the exciting news of an invitation from Paul Dean, the artistic director of the Tutti world youth music festival to perform at the 2013 festival to be held in Beijing China in July 2013.

As usual, the Music year commenced with the traditional camp held at Alexandra Headlands on the first weekend back at school. Only a few weeks into the year performances were already underway, including the Inaugural Mass, Champagnat Trust Lunch and the Autumn Band, String and Choral concerts. Senior student Sacha Gibbs-McPhee also made it through to the second round recital of the Queensland Symphony Orchestras Young Instrumentalist Competition held at the QSO Ferry Road studios in West End. The judges commented that the standard of this year’s competition was at an all time high and it is a great achievement for Sacha to progress through to this stage.

In Term 2 Chamber Strings and Big Band 1 competed in the Queensland Youth Music Awards. Both groups were outstanding with Big Band 1 being awarded 1st Place and winning the Graham & Yvonne Chapman Trophy. Chamber Choir and Big Band 1 travelled to Goondiwindi for the annual show, the guitar ensembles performed at St Laurence’s College under the direction of Mr. Tony Vandermeer and Mr. Leo McFadden, the Liturgy Choir performed at the Mother and Son Mass and many students competed in the annual “Battle of Bands”. The undoubted highlight of this term was the “Blue & Gold” concert, featuring our top groups in a night of musical excellence. All of the ensembles and soloists performed beyond expectation. The involvement of present and past students, as well as staff, parents and members of the wider community resulted in an enjoyable performance of an extremely high musical standard. Special mention must go to both Michael Wing and Sacha Gibbs-McPhee who both performed with musical maturity beyond their age. In Term 3, due to the increasing numbers of boys involved in choral and string music at the College, two separate concerts were held to showcase the talents of our 2012 ensembles. The first concert was held at St Stephen’s Cathedral for our senior groups while the junior and intermediate ensembles performed at our own Chapel. Both concerts were a great opportunity to hear the fantastic progress that the boys had made. The Marist Jazz Night featured all of the College’s Jazz Bands, as well as special guests “Trichotomy” featuring old boy Pat Marchisella. Other performances included the Winds & Percussion Concert and the Junior Strings Festival. It was also great to see record numbers of Marist musicians selected again for the Queensland Secondary Honours Choir, the State Honours Ensemble Program and G.R.I.P.P.S. Term 4 saw the boys excel in multiple competitions across Brisbane. Junior Strings were awarded Platinum, Symphony Orchestra Gold and Wind Orchestra Silver in their sections of Music Fest held at venues around Brisbane. The performing year concluded for most groups with the annual Grandparents Day Concert and Soiree and finally the Year 6 & 7 classes, Old Boys and staff performed Christmas carols for the College community on the final evening of the academic year. Thanks must go to Mr Craig Kennedy for his fantastic efforts in the co-ordination of the Instrumental Music program. Through his hard work in tandem with our Administration Assistant, Mrs. Jennifer Hutchinson, the administration and communication with staff and parents has continued to improve. Without the help of these two people the Department would quickly draw to an abrupt stop. The full time staff - Mrs Laura Kavanagh, Mrs Kellee Green, Mrs Catherine Wasserman and Miss Stefanie Smith - have selflessly given much of their time and talent to the development of the Music Department here at Marist and their help is most appreciated. Special thanks also to Miss Katherine Gavarinich who joined the faculty on a 12-month contract; in only a short time her enthusiasm left a big impression on all of her students. As always, the part time staff have continued to bring their great talents to the department and their input has been invaluable. I must also thank Mr Peter McLoughlin for his personal support and the College staff and administration for all their encouragement throughout the year. Finally, heartfelt thanks to all the students, and especially the Year 12 class of 2012, who were involved in the Music Department this year. Without the dedication, talent and enthusiasm that they have displayed in

rehearsals, concerts and competitions throughout the year, the successes that we have enjoyed would not have been possible. It has truly been a pleasure again to work with such outstanding young men and boys. Hopefully we will send you a postcard from Beijing! RAvE AWARDSCongratulations to Year 10 student Shaun Dauth who received a special ‘Encouragement Award’ at the ‘Rave Awards’ which are run by Valley FM. This is a community radio station based in the Brisbane Valley. This was a fantastic effort with entries being received from all over Australia. The award night was held at the new Somerset Civic Centre in Esk on September 15th.
