SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• DCWV™ Once Upon a Time Cardstock Stack • Brads: small for marionettes; large for wooden sticks • Hole punch: size of small brad prongs• Markers • Monofilament • Woodsies craft sticks• Scissors• Pencil• Drill• Paint, paintbrush • Adhesive dots

DIRECTIONS:

1. Copy pattern sheet. Cut out patterns; trace onto cardstock. Draw faces with black marker; color in with markers.

2. Punch holes as indicated and assemble marionettes, using brads. Punch holes for monofilament.

3. Each marionette requires 2 sticks. Paint sticks and drill a hole in the middle and one at each end of each stick.

4. Cut a 2-ft. length of monofilament. Tie 8 knots at one end to make one large knot. Thread through marionette headwith the knot at the back; then through the two center holes of the sticks. The space between the marionette headand sticks is 9". Insert a large brad through the center hole, along with the monofilament and rotate the sticks intoan X. Wind the tail of the monofilament around the brad several times. Pick up a small adhesive dot with afingernail & force it under the brad to secure the monofilament. Trim tail to 1".

5. Use the same technique to secure the arms to 2 holes in one of the sticks and the legs to the other stick. Themonofilament should be taut when the arm or leg is extended to the at rest position. Before securing, wiggle the X left and right, front and back, to see if these motions have the desired effect on the limbs.

DIRECTIONS: To maximize area for maneuvering marionettes, one of the middle two wooden slats can be removed.

1. Paint crate with Lavender paint to cover all raw wood. Allow to dry. Glue background directly to crate slatsat back of theater. Two sheets of paper will be required; center one and cut the 2nd to fill in on left & right sides.

2. Measure the opening between slats from left to right and cut 3 sheets of foam core to this width. These will become3 backdrop panels and the theater floor. The one shown was cut to 16¼" width.

3. Draw backdrop shapes on foam core sheets, making sure they extend beyond the top of the crate with the tallestone in the back. Plan the general openings within the backdrops to become larger toward the front of the theater, so backdrops behind each are still visible.

4. Cut out foam core shapes. Trace on paper and cut out, adding 1/4" beyond each shape, except at side edges andbottom. Glue paper pieces to foam core. Embellish with tree trunks, flowers & leaves.

5. Curve the front of the floor foam core piece, using a large platter or tray as a template. Paint white foam core edgesand glue paper onto surface. Punch circles from paper and glue to front curve.

6. Cut strips of paper the width of top slats and cover each slat.

7. Cover sides and front edges of theater with paper. Add other paper embellishments, as desired.

Marionettes can be reduced or enlarged as desired. Cut 2 arms and 2 legs. Reverse direction for2nd arm or leg. Reinforce where strings will attach with extra layer of cardstock.
