Tributes to Marie Casciato Last week, we lost Marie Casciato, my longtime Personal Assistant and the Editor of this publication, Saturday Briefing. A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, February 28, at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Many friends and colleagues spoke of their fond memories of Marie. Some of those tributes are included below, along with those of others who knew her, loved her, and now miss her. My own tribute follows at the end.

*****Marion Beverly: IamproudtosaythatIwasafriendofMarie’s.Thelaughswehadovertheyearsaretoomanytolist.IamstilltryingtoacceptthatMarieisnotwithusanymore.Ikeepwaitingforthephonetoringandhearherlaughingvoice.Mariewasoneofthoserarepeoplethatcouldmakeyoulaughinamatterofseconds.Herenthusiasmforlifecameoverloudandclear.Mariewasoneofthemosthonest,down-to-earth,caringpeopleIhaveevermet.Ifsomethingneededtobedone,shewouldtakecareofitimmediately!IfMarieheardunpleasantnewsaboutColorado,whereourofficesarelocated,Iwouldgetacall,“YouOK?KidsOK?”Iwouldtellher“yes”andwouldgetback,“OK.Gottogo–justwantedtomakesureyouwereallOK.”ThatwasMarie–alwaystakingtimetocheckifherfriendsandco-workerswereOK,nomatterhowbusyherdaywas.MarietoldmeoncethatshelovedgoingtoDuke’srestaurantbecause,“Afterfiveminutesinthere,nomatterwhatkindofdayyouhad,youwouldbelaughingandhavingagoodtime.Duke’sisoneofthoseplaces.”That’showitwaswithMarie.Fiveminutesinhercompany,andyouwouldbelaughingandhavingagoodtime!Thevoidshehasleftistoobigtobefilled.Iwillmissmyfriendeachandeveryday.

(Dr. Richard Kelley loves to personally present the Chairman’s Award. The name of the honoree is a closely-guarded secret that is not revealed until he or she is called to the stage. Dr. Kelley added

a little extra drama and Hollywood to this year’s ceremony to bring some extra excitement to the moment when the honoree’s name is called. Here’s what he said.)

OurpasthonoreesaresomeofthefinestpeopleIhaveknowninmylife.EveryoneofthemhasbeenanindividualwhoseactionsandresultsexemplifyTheOutriggerWay.Theseincludeourveryfirstawardee,FranKirk,followedbyTomBurke,BillSthay,MichaelDevich,JoeDurocher,PerrySorenson,MelWilinsky,MelKaneshige,BarryWallace,MaxSword,DorseyBrady,AlanWhite,BarbaraCampbell,ChuckShishido,andlastyear’swinner,DannyOjiri. AtOutrigger,Billdidnotfinddogsorbunnies,butadynamic,growingcompany.Whenhearrived,ourreservationssystemworked,butBillhasbeeninstrumentalinmakingitmuch,muchbetter,moreefficient,anduser-friendlyforbothemployeesandcustomers. Today,ourreservationssystemisnotonlystate-of-the-art,butaleaderintheindustry.UsingVoiceoverInternetProtocoltechnology,wehavebeenabletohavealmostallofourreservationsagentsinColoradooperatefromtheirhomes.Therearecountlessadvantagestothis,includingemployeetime,gas,andsafety,particularlyduringthewintermonths. Lastyear,Billclosedthelargecallcenterwehadusedforalmosttwodecades.WenowhaveasmallofficefortraininglocatedintheDenversuburbs.Ourcomputerserversweremovedintoanew,securedatacenter.

Ittookgreatleadershiptomanagethisconversion.Thejobwascompletedandthenewsystemturnedon,effectiveOctober1,2009,withallcriticalconnectionsupandoperatingperfectly–ontimeandwithinbudget! SincehisarrivalatOutrigger,Billhasoverseenmanychanges,buthehasalwaysactedinharmonywithourmissionandflawlesslymadetheneededimprovements.Inthiscase,ournewreservationsequipmentandsoftwareishelpingusaccomplishourmissionofbeingtheleisurehospitalitycompanyofchoice.Itisalsoprovidingouremployeesanopportunitytobetheirbest,givingourguestsdistinctivehospitalityandvalue,andhelpingprovidetheresultspromisedtoourinvestors. AsOutriggercontinuestogrowandexpand,weknowwecancountonBillPetersandhistalentedteamtokeepuspointedintherightdirectionandtoprovidethe“bestinclass”reservationsexperienceinourindustry! 2009provedtobeayearfilledwitheconomicchallengesforOutrigger,onethatresultedinstaffingadjustmentsthroughoutthecompany,includingthemailroom.Withouthesitation,Kathyassistedinkeepingthemailcirculatingwithoutfail,ontopofhernormalduties.KathyalsovolunteeredtobetheCo-ChairoftheOutriggerHotelsHawaiiPoliticalActionCommittee(OHHPAC),andhereffortshavemadeatremendousdifference.Kathy’sdiligenteffortshaveresultedinadramaticincreaseinOHHPACmembership,thereintroductionofafull-colorOHHPACnewsletter,andarenewedcoreleadershipgroup,includingKathy.Nomatterhowsmallorlargethetask,Kathyconsistentlygoesfarbeyond,withaprofessionalandpositiveattitude,tocompletealltaskswithKīnā‘ole.Kathyhasneverbeenheardtosayanegativewordaboutanyoneoranything.KathyisanexcellentexampleofourvalueofKīnā‘ole.

JasonKemperdisplayedOutrigger’svalueofKīnā‘oleduringOMI’s(Outrigger’sDenverReservationsCenter’s)recentmovetoavirtualofficeinSeptemberof2009.NotonlydidJasondisplaytheutmostprofessionalism,buthealsofacilitatedthetransitionsuccessfullyandsmoothly.First,heidentifiedasecureandcost-effectivedatacenterforOMI’sserversandrouters,aswellasadataback-upprovider.Then,heworkedwithtele-communicationsprovidersandEchopasstoensurealllineswereappropriatelyset-upatthedatacenterbythedeadline.Finally,JasonfacilitatedthefinalprojectofthecutoverwithallserviceprovidersandCorporateI.T.Asaresult,thetransitionwasseamless,andtherewasnodowntimeforthereservationscenter.CongratulationstoJasonfordoingsuchanamazingjobonsuchanimportanttransitionforthecompany!

TamarisibeganhercareerasanF&BAttendantattheOutriggerontheLagoon-Fijiin2001.Forseveralyears,shehonedherattentiontodetailandbecamerenownedforofferingthebestserviceforherguests.In2007,herdedicationandtherespectfromherpeersaffordedTamarisitheopportunitytobecomeaTeamLeader.Lessthansixmonthslater,shewaspromotedtoF&BSupervisor,whereshewasapowerfulforceinthetransformationoftheBaraviRestaurantandBar,whichunderwentmajorrenovationin2009.Tamarisi’sflawlessnessinspiredtheteamtoprovidearefineddiningexperience.ThestunningfinancialandserviceresultsachievedbytheteamareadirectresultofTamarisi’shardwork.Customerserviceratingsincreasedfrom60percentto90percentsincetherenovation.Tamarisicontinuestorefusetoacceptcomplacencybutdoessoinawaythattrulyinspiresherteamtostriveforsuccess.

Peggy’sexpertiseandknowledgeisexceptional.ItisbecauseofPeggythattheOHANAWaikikiMaliarenovationwascompletedontimeandwithminimalproblems.Ashorttimeaftertheprojectbegan,Peggybecameresponsiblefortheentireproject.Peggy’sgreatpersonalityandabilitytoworkwitheveryone,fromtheMaliaemployeesandthecontractors,toherownpersonalstaff,andofcourse,theMaliaowners,arewhatmadetherenovationprojectattheMaliarunsosmoothly.Anyproblemsthatarosewerehandledpromptlyandefficiently.Shesmoothedoverroughedges,whilecomplimenting,allwhoareinvolved.Fortakingoveraprojectonamoment’snotice,Peggysucceededinproducingabeautiful,high-qualityproductofwhichweareallveryproud.

In2009,inadditiontoservingastheGeneralManageratKeauhouBeachResort(KBR),Paulworkeddiligentlywiththeownersonrefiningthevisionfortheproperty.Paul’sstylerepresentsasustainableleaderwhoiscommittedtobuildinglastingpartnerships,whilerespectingvariousvoices.Heisknowledgeable,darestotakecalculatedrisks,andissavvyandhonestinhisfeedback.Paulembracedtheowners’visionthatcelebratestheHawaiianculture,whilecreatingeducationalprogrammingforthecommunity,schoolchildren,andvisitorstotheisland.Paulalsoinspiredhismanagementstafftoachievetheirhighestpotential.InadowneconomyandwithallofHawaiiIslandssufferingin2009,KBRbeatouttheircompetitiveset.RevParfortheyearwasa22percentimprovementover2008.ItisPaul’scommitmenttofosteringopenrelationshipsbasedonhonesty,trust,andfairnessthathashelpedhimgaintherespectofhisemployees,peers,supervisors,community,andowners.

Withoutadoubt,GeorgeGuerrero,betterknownas“ChefRey,”wasOHANABayviewGuam’sshiningstarin2009!WhilesearchingforanewRestaurantManagerandfacinganeconomicdownturn,ChefReymadeaboldandriskymove–tolearnandrunbothfrontandbackoftherestaurant,whichalsoincludesbanquetsalesandcatering.Heimmediatelyworkedtirelesslytolearnthefront-of-the-houseoperations.Atthesametime,hefocusedonmentoringandpreparinghiskitchenteamforpromotionalopportunities.ChefReywaskeytoimplementingthenewF&BPointofSalessystem.Heimmersedhimselfinlearningthenewsystem,thentrainedhisstaff.ChefReyisalifelonglearner,hasapassionforcuisine,andstrivestobethebesthecanbe.Hisrelentlessinvolvementintherestaurantresultedinimprovedcommunicationandamazingcostsavings.Undeniably,ChefRey,knownnowas“IronChefRey,”epitomizesthevalueofKe‘AnoWa‘a.

“Imitotherescue”wasthethemefor2009intheOutriggerReefontheBeach(ORF)Accountingoffice.WhenKaniKaPilaGrille(KKPG)opened,theORFAccountingteam,whohadnopreviousexperienceinF&Baccounting,facedmanynewchallenges.Withouthesitation,ImicametotherescuetoHonolulu,workingnearlyalldayandallnightforthreedaysstraighttorecordallthemonthlyF&BentriesforKKPG,soORFcouldclosethemonthofMarchaccuratelyandontime.ShealsomodifiedtheKeauhoutemplatestofitORF’sF&Btransactions.ImithenrushedbacktoKeauhoutocloseitsbooks,returningtoORFthefollowingmonthtofurthertrainandtoworkwithNightAudit.Withherleadership,expertise,andcontinuouscoaching,Imiamazedeveryonewithherenergy,strength,attitude,anddetermination.

TeresaalwaysmeetsherjobasaSecurityOfficeratKiahunaPlantationwithenthusiasmandgraciousness.OnarecentrainyKauainight,averyelderlycouplearrivedat11p.m.foraweek’sstayafterdrivingfornearlytwohours.TheFrontDeskcalledTeresatoassistthemtotheircondo.Thecouplewerebothdiabeticandneededfood,yetrestaurantsandgrocerystoreswereclosed.Teresainvitedthemtoherhome,whereshepreparedfood,gavethemadditionalsnackstoholdthemuntilmorning,andthentookthembacktotheircondo.Nooneknewaboutthisuntilthenextmorning,whenthegueststoldeveryonehowverygratefultheywereforTeresaandherkindness.Theysawherasalivingexampleoftheultimate“GoodSamaritan.”Congratulations,Teresa!

Every‘ohanahassomeonethatrepresentsa“mother”figure,anurturer,adisciplinarian,amotivator.AtORF,thispersonisTeresaShepherd.HerattentiontodetailanddrivetohaveaccurateandtimelyinformationhelpsORFtobeastrongerteam.Justwhenyouthinkshe’sahard-nosedaccountantpushingnumbers,sheshowsyetanothersideofher.TeresawillspontaneouslydancehulaatKaniKaPilaGrilleorjumpintohostwhenit’sbusy,justbecauseshehappenedtobethereandcustomerswerewaiting.Teresaisalwaystheretohelp.Forexample,shestayeduntil10:30onenight,afterafullday’swork,tohelpsubmitthemonth-endinventorycountontime.Shemaybebehind-the-scenes,buthereffortsdonotgounnoticed.Herdedicationtotheentireteammotivatesalltostriveforaccuratefinancialinformationtogetherwithtop-levelguestservice.

Jo-AnnisanAlaka‘iattheOutriggerReefontheBeach(ORF)andunderstandsandlivesthevalueofWahi.In2009,Jo-AnninitiatedtwomajorrecyclingprogramsatORF.First,shestartedtheguestroombottleandcanrecyclingprogram.Shemetwithotherproperties,withalocalnon-profitagency,andReynoldsRecycling.Shearrangedforthenon-profitgrouptospeaktotheHousekeepersabouttheprogramanddevelopedandcoordinatedcollectionandpick-upprocedures.ShemotivatesHousekeeperstocollectrecyclablesbysharingmonthlychartsshowingtheirprogress.Jo-Anntheninitiatedarecyclingprogramforbeachitems(rafts,tubes,beachmats),similartotheOutriggerWaikiki.SherecentlyshowedthebeachbagthatwasmadefromtherecycleditemstomotivatetheHousekeeperstocontinuetorecycle.Jo-Ann,yourrespectofour“place”isadmirable--mahaloforcaring!

BronwynlivesthisvalueinallshedoesasControllerfortheAustralianoperations.Bronwyntrainsthedepartmentheadsatthepropertiestoensuretheyhavetheknowledge,skills,andabilitytoacceptfinancialKuleanafortheirdepartmentandtrainsthemanagersonthebudgetprocess.BronwynimplementedstandardsforowneraccountingatOutriggerTwinTowns,whichhasdecreasedownerconcerns.Ithasalsohelpedimplement“fairshareoccupancydistribution,”whichhasfurtherreducedownerconcernsandactuallyinstilledconfidenceintheoperation,resultinginmoreunitsjoiningtherentalprogram.Bronwynhasalsopreparedfinancialproformasforcurrentpossibilities,ontopofhernormalduties.Notbad,whenyouconsidersheisateamofONE.Bronwynistrulyaleaderthatleadsbyexample.

Fromday-oneofjoiningtheOutriggerReefBelldepartment,TinoepitomizedKuleana.Hearrivedat5a.m.tomeetthegraveyardteam.Hestayedlatethatday,sohecouldmeetallhisstaff.Thissenseofcaringresponsibilityhasn’tstopped.Manyweeks,heisatthehotelsevendaysaweek.Tinoisconstantlyonthefloor,pullinganddeliveringbags,yetrefusestoparticipateinthetips.TwobellmenexpressedconcernbecausetheyknewtheyweremakingmorethanTino.Hewasthebestthingthateverhappenedtotheirdepartment,andtheywereworriedthatTinomightleave.TheLeisureTrendsGuestscoresfortheBelldepartmentshowTino’seffectiveness.Underhisleadership,thedepartmenthasconsistentlyachievedscoresof9.8andhitanastonishing9.9onemonth.Tino’shumilityandcaringattitudeareinspirationaltoall.

AlanNaitostartedtherecyclingprogramfortheOHANAWaikikiEastHotelin2008.ItwasmodeledafteraprogramthatJimHeatherimplementedattheOutriggerWaikikibackin2006.Sincethen,hehasspearheadedOHANA’srecyclingeffortandwasresponsibleforgettingallWaikikiOHANAsontheprogrambythefirstquarterof2009.Inaddition,hehasassistedtheEmbassySuites,OutriggerReef,andLuanaWaikikiwithstartingtheirownrecyclingprograms.In2009alone,Outrigger’seffortshaveresultedinover14tonsofrecyclablematerialbeingkeptoutofourlandfills.Proceedsfromthiseffort,over$15,000in2009,weredonatedtoP.A.C.T.,ParentsAndChildrenTogether,whichisoneofHawaii’sleadingprivate,non-profitfamilyserviceagenciesandisaleaderinthedesignanddeliveryofabroadrangeofinnovativesocialandeducationalservices.ReynoldsRecyclingcreateditsAnnualGreenLeadersAwardin2009,andOEGwasthefirstrecipientofthisaward.Alan’seffortsthroughout2009wereasignificantfactorinOutriggerreceivingthisaward.

ItalltookplaceinthelatehoursofSeptember29,2009,intotheearlyhoursofSeptember30.OutriggerMarketingInc.’scomputerservershadtoberelocatedtoanewdatacenter.VacatingthetotalspaceattheoldcallcenterinDenvertookateamefforttomoveserversandelectronicconnectionstothenewdatacenter.Movingthecomputerhardwareandre-installingalltheserversinthenewViaWestcabinetwastheeasypart.Themostdifficultpartwascoordinatingtheinstallationofthevirtualprivatenetworkconnection.Allconsumercallscontinuedtobeansweredandprocessedduringthisdowntime.Wholesaleagentsworkingfromhomecouldalsocontinuetoprocessallincomingroominglists.BytheeveningofOctober1,allcriticalconnections

werebackupandoperatingperfectly.Havingtherightback-upproceduresinplacekeptusupandtakingreservationsduringthiswholeprocess.Withouttheirexpertiseandtalents,thismovecouldnothavehappenedaswellasitdid.

TheInformationTechnologyPCServicesTeamtackledthreeunusualconversionprojectsin2009:theCourtyardbyMarriott,theBestWesternPlazaHotel,andtheKapaluaVillasnetworkintegration.TwoconversionsrequiredremovingStellexandinstallingbrand-mandated,property-basedPropertyMangementSystems(PMS).Thethirdprojectrequiredtakingoveraproperty-basedPMSsystemandbringingitandthehoteloperatingstaffworkstationsinsidetheOutriggernetwork.ThePCServicesTeamenthusiasticallyembracedthechallengesandworkedoutexcellentsolutionsatallthreeproperties.Inalloftheseprojects,theITPCServicesTeamexpandedtheircapabilities.TheyprovedtheITdepartmentandtheOutriggercomputernetworkcanand

MariewasbestknownforpublishingSaturday Briefing,butshetouchedasurprisinglywidearrayofactivitiesinthecompanyandwiththeKelleyfamily–shedidtheExecutiveOfficebudget,supervisedtheOHANA Houpublication,wastheguidingforceforOutrigger’scharitablecontributions,servedasthekeycontactfortheVisitorAlohaSociety,keptDr.Kelleyinline,madesurethecopiersandprinterswereworking,helpedmakemany“touchy”VIPreservationsforfamilymembers,helpedJeanRollesandMaxSwordkeeptheirMacsworking,andundertookawholeslewofspecialprojectsthatnooneelsewoulddo.



Ineveryendeavor,Mariewasbothcreativeanddecisive.Decisionscamequicklytoher,and,inhermind,therewasneveranydoubtaboutwhatshouldbedone.Sheapproachedeverythingwithasingularfocusonquality.But,shehadlittlepatienceforthosewhodidn’tshareherzealoragreewithwhatsheknewwas“right.”Shewouldoftensaythatsomeone“wasmakingmecrazy,”whentheydidn’tliveuptoherstandards.ButwhenIhearherfriendsspeakabouttheirtimewithMarie,itiscleartherewasnoshortageofcompassionandcaringinher. AswehavespentthelastweekunderstandingtheroleMarieplayedandwhatshewasabletoaccomplish,wehavecometotrulyappreciatethedepthofhertalentandherenergy.Shewillsurelybemissed.
