Attitudes to School Survey (Year 4/ 5/ 6)

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School sur-

vey is an annual survey for Years 4 to 12 students offered by the Department of Education and Early Child-

hood Development. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and

experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your

child's experience at school.

Students in Year 4, 5 and 6 will participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This

year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period 23rd April to 1st June. The

survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time.

2019 Foundation enrolment

Our school tours are in full swing and enrolment forms are coming in. I encourage all current families with chil-

dren ready to start Foundation next year to please get a form and hand it in to the office before the end of

April to ensure we can hold a place for your child.

Playgroup at MPPS

The school is looking to implement a playgroup one morning a week at the school and is looking for parent

volunteers to help lead and run the group. If you are interested, please speak to Matt or leave your details at

the office.

Matt Bott

Principal

Hi everyone! Hope you have had a wonderful first term!

I am in need of some helpers to return 2 arts boards to the Diamond Valley Arts so-

ciety in Greensborough that were accidentally left after the Art Show last

year. They are 2.4 X 1.2 m and come with 4 stands. If anyone has a vehicle that is

big enough to return this and could do it then please let Christine or Kaye know

ASAP. Your help is VERY much appreciated.

We have been busy in both Visual and Performing arts this term learning about

drama, singing, collage and printmaking! Please be sure to check out the arts blog

for all the latest updates and photos on what is happening in the Arts at MPPS.

Happy Easter and have a wonderful break,

Christine

PRINCIPAL REPORT (CONT.)

ART NEWS

Respect Optimism Care Collaboration

Our four new Green Team Captains are settling into their roles for 2018 and we are current-

ly planning activities for the rest of the year to improve our sustainability focus at MPPS.

Aaliyah Malik is looking after composting, Lucy Brockman nude food, Sofia Martinez

Scidone energy saving initiatives and Flynn Alphey water conservation. Matt Burke will be

working on the Resourcesmart Accreditation and we will be supporting the schools

endeavours towards our 5 star rating.

CHICKENS

Our recent arrivals, Clucky and Basil are adapting to their new environment and seem to

be a little less timid. We have been lucky enough to allow them free range of the vegeta-

ble garden area for 11 hours each day thanks to the support of the team members at

OSHC who have been involved in their daily care. They have also very generously agreed

to make sure they are cared for during the upcoming term break which we are very grate-

ful for. We are also indebted to the Gulam family who have been the weekend carers

since we first got the chickens in 2015. A big shout out to them!

GREEN TEAM PARENT HELPERS

Matt Burke and I have been talking about different projects we would like to have happen

at the school which would require the support of the parent community. Schools who have

active sustainability programs have active involvement from the whole school community

and we are keen to extend this offer to parents at MPPS. It would largely involve communi-

cation via email, a couple of meetings either before or after school during terms 2,3 and 4

and possibly some work around the grounds.

If this is something you and or your family would be interested or if you feel you have some

particular expertise to offer please email me at [email protected]

Thanks

Leigh

This is the first in a series of newsletter articles exploring Science at Home.

In term two most year levels will be studying an aspect of science, so this is an appropriate time to fos-

ter avenues of conversation at home.

The goal of this, and upcoming newsletters articles, is to allow you to:

[To assist develop these articles I’ll

reference, amongst others, the work of Debbye Vitti and Angie Torres]

To begin with let’s define what is meant by SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS.

One of the most important goals of schooling is to teach students to think. While all areas of the curricu-

lum share in accomplishing this overall goal science contributes its own unique skills, with its emphasis on

hypothesizing, manipulating the physical world and reasoning from data.

Some terms you may be familiar with to describe these science skills include the scientific method, sci-entific thinking and critical thinking. Another term is the scientific process.

It is said the scientific process occurs naturally and spontaneously in our minds. By logically breaking

down the steps in our thinking, we can use this process to find out how to answer ours, and our chil-

dren’s, questions about how the world works. The science process is therefore not just useful in science,

but in any situation that requires critical thinking.

The skills involved include observing qualities, measuring quantities, sorting/classifying, inferring, predict-

ing, experimenting, and communicating.

1. Name the major science process skills

2. Understand how we use science process skills not only in the

“lab” but in everyday life

3. Better understand how to practice key science process skills

with your children

Science at Home

Respect Optimism Care Collaboration

At home, conversations to foster the development of Basic Science Process Skills could be as follows:

The key to any of these activities is to name them as you do them. This could be as simple as saying, “Ok we need to sort out the shopping before we put it away. Can you suggest what categories we could use to clas-sify, or group, what goes where?”

(Final note: While many parents, particularly those with a science background, may recognise I’ve left out

more complex skills such as Formulating Hypotheses, Experimenting, Controlling Variables, Interpreting Data and Developing Models these are areas that will be covered at school.)

Where To From Here

In upcoming newsletters I will give further examples of guiding questions you may use to foster conversation,

provide a survey to assist in recognising the strongest and weakest science process skills you feel you and your

child possess, and recommend examples of how to practice basic science process skills at home.

Lee Pregnell (Science Coordinator

Observing - using the senses to gath-

er information about an object or

event.

Example: Describing a pencil as yel-low, or watching and smelling what happens to bread as it is toasting.

Inferring - making an "educated

guess" about an object or event

based on previously gathered data

or information.

Example: Saying that the person who used a pencil made a lot of mistakes because the eraser was well worn, or this is someone’s favourite book be-cause the pages are all bent and creased.

Measuring - using either standard

and nonstandard measures, or esti-

mates to describe the dimensions of

an object or event.

Example: Using measuring cups when cooking, or a tape measure to meas-ure someone’s height.

Communicating - using words or graphic symbols to describe an action, object or event

Example: Describing the change in height of a plant, or a new puppy, over time in writing or through a graph.

Classifying - grouping or ordering objects or events into categories based on properties or criteria.

Example: Placing all rocks having a certain grain size or hardness into one group, or simply sort laundry together.

Predicting - stating the outcome of a future event based on a pattern of evidence.

Example: Predicting the height of a plant, or a new puppy, in two weeks time based on a graph of its growth during the previous four weeks.
