BUNINYONG GOODLIFE FESTIVAL
This Sunday the Buninyong Goodlife Festival is taking place in and around Desoza Park. Between 12:30 and 1pm there is going to be a large “conga” style parade snaking through the Festival grounds. CocoSounds Music School will lead the parade, complete with drums and horns. This sounds like a lot of fun and all Buninyong PS students are invited to participate. If you would like to participate, simply look for people gathering at around 12:30 and jump in with the Buninyong PS crew. Pictured is a group of students practising their conga style dancing at last week’s assembly.
SNOW TRIP
After the outstanding success of the trip to Japan, a proposal has been put forward to run a trip to the snow in alternate years. This proposal was considered and endorsed by School Council last night. If this trip is to run in 2018, we’ll need to move quickly to secure a place by making a booking and paying deposits.
This trip will be available for grade 5/6 2018 students. If this is of interest have a read of the flyer on the following page and make sure you come along to the information evening on 1st November in the BER @ 7pm.

B+ Focus of the fortnight Over the next fortnight, the kids are focusing on the theme of:
BODY AWARENESS Aims of this fortnight’s theme include:
To understand our bodies.
To know personal boundaries such as what is private/public.
Attached to the back of this newsletter is a printout that parents/carers can use to help discuss body
safety rules with their child. Obviously this is up to parents/carers in how to approach, we just thought
this might be a good prompt to enable discussion (if your child is ready for that).
Week 3 eSmart focus:
Create a golden rule of online safety and share it with a grandparent or older person.
Hours of
Supervision
A reminder that the
school’s hours of supervision are between
8:45am and 3:45pm. Before and after these
times, the school cannot guarantee the best
supervision for your child and they may be
unsupervised. If your child must be dropped off
prior to, or after these times, please contact
Scott, Bernie or Dave to discuss any options
that may be available.
ORGANISING CLASSES FOR 2018 Term 4 is slipping by and next month the process of organising students into classes for next year will begin. If there are significant issues we need to be aware of when allocating your child to a class, please make sure they have been made known to Bernie, Dave or Scott by Monday, November 13
th. Teachers are meeting soon after
to begin sorting children into classes. It is not our intention to provide parents with the opportunity to select a teacher of choice. We have developed a very strong teaching team and parents can be confident the needs of their child will be met by any member of our team. Developing well-balanced classes is best for everyone and that can be made difficult if there are large numbers of requests – as such, it is important that placement requests be founded on significant reasons and not related to specific teachers. We try to accommodate parent requests with regard to student placements, but you will understand this is not always possible. It is also important when we come to organise classes that we know of students who will not be at our School in 2018. If your family is moving on, please let us know as soon as possible.
Offered take KFC ( our favourite chook ) to the vet and is kindly coming in twice a day to give
her medicine.

Scratch & Patch News We’re glad to report that KFC is doing much better and that the vet says she does not have to have any more medication. She still needs to be kept by herself until her foot completely heals though and we can’t eat her eggs for a month. Thanks for everyone who has helped us take care of her, especially to Liz Lucas who won the Act of Kindness award. In other news, we have been able to do some cooking with our first harvest from the veggie garden this week. See links below for the recipes for the yummy Beetroot Dip and Cauliflower Dip that we made: Beetroot Dip Cauliflower Dip

ICAS TESTING FINAL RESULTS
We have now received all final testing results for English and Math. These certificates will be presented at next week’s whole school assembly.
This concludes our ICAS involvement for 2017. We would like to thank all those families who took part and well done to the students who took a risk and set themselves the goal of testing their knowledge and skills in a broad range of learning areas.
If you would like to be part of the 2018 ICAS program, information will be available early in 2018.
Thank you everyone for supporting our Book Fair. We took over $5000 which has given us around $1600 in commission. This will enable us to purchase some great new resources for our Library. Again I am astounded at your generosity as you are great supporters of our Book Fairs. The children just love browsing to see what they can ask Mum or Dad to buy for them.

Library As the year ‘s end gets ever closer can I ask all parents to check with their children if they have any outstanding books. We particularly ask any parents of children who will be leaving at the end of the year to double check their outstanding loans. You may remember earlier this year we announced in the newsletter that parents can access their children’s loans on line through our new library system Oliver V5/Orbit. We lose hundreds of dollars worth of books each year through children leaving and not returning their books, your assistance is greatly appreciated. Below are the instructions of how to log on and check your child’s loans.

Building Resilience
Understanding Emotional Literacy
What is emotional literacy?
Emotional literacy (often referred to as emotional intelligence) is our ability to recognise, understand and
appropriately express our emotions. It is also the ability to recognise the emotions of others and to
respond to them appropriately. Emotional literacy is a key component of both self-awareness and social
awareness.
Emotional literacy is a key skill which underpins:
Self-awareness – Being able to identify and recognise your emotions
Self-management – Being able to exert self-control and manage stress and challenge
Social awareness – Being aware of others’ needs and having empathy for others
Relationship skills – Being able to communicate and relate well with others
Responsible decision-making – Being able to problem-solve and accept responsibility
How do we teach emotional literacy? The Building Resilience Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson materials use a range of individual and group activities to help students to: Learn to recognise and describe their emotions
Discuss and practise how to express their emotions appropriately
Think about the consequences of expressing emotions inappropriately
Reflect on their own emotional responses to a variety of situations
Learn new ways to manage and regulate their emotions
Practise effective communication skills and learn to moderate their emotional responses when expressing their needs, wants and opinions
Sample Activities to complete with your children Positive and negative emotions Ask your child to draw the outline of a body and to write the words for some positive and negative
emotions around the outside
Encourage them to talk about where in their bodies they might feel the different emotions and add
these to the drawing: e.g. nervous-sweaty palms, excited/afraid tension in the tummy, pride-a big
smile (This can help your child to recognise their stress signals and encourage them to talk with
you about these)
A rollercoaster of emotions In the course of a day we feel a range of emotions. The metaphor of the rollercoaster can be used
to help children and young people understand emotional intensity and the way experiences can
lead to or trigger positive or negative emotions
Drawing a rollercoaster diagram showing the high and low points of a day helps children recognise
events and situations that lead to varying emotional responses
Draw the rollercoaster that represents your own day and share it with your child and then
encourage them to try drawing one of their own
(Continued on page 12)
Continued from pg 10
What can parents and carers do to support emotional literacy? Families have an essential role to play in supporting children and young people’s emotional literacy. Children and young people experience a range of positive and negative emotions. This is normal and healthy. Each person will feel and express these emotions differently. You can support them to recognise these emotions by helping them name their positive emotions (such as proud, interested, excited, relieved) and negative emotions (such as angry, lonely, afraid, disappointed). You can support your child through: Role modelling - how you express and manage emotions influences how they learn to express and
manage their own emotions
Helping them name their positive emotions (such as proud, interested, excited, relieved) and
negative emotions (such as angry, lonely, afraid, disappointed).
Recognising and naming your own feelings and emotions
Creating spaces for regular communication
Validating your child or young person’s feelings
Guiding them towards appropriate expressions of emotions
Setting consistent, clear and supportive boundaries for the expression of emotions

Scotsburn Geocaching A big thank you to all the participants from the weekend’s 3rd geocaching event at Scotsburn. Without batting an eyelid at the drizzle, Quinn set the mood by asking the only question after the safety briefing, “Can we get started?” With a different course to the previous years, everyone was determined to find the ten hidden caches and crack the puzzle for a prize at the end. Bikes, prams and most certainly participants, rolled in through the gates muddy and beaming from ear to ear at the end of their ride/run! Well done and thank you to everyone who attended. A big thank you to Grant and Campbell for marking out the course (twice), Scotsburn staff for doing all the behind the scenes organisation, parents for their kind prize donations, Mick and Mufa for manning the BBQ, the Moore family for helping pack up the course and Graham for being our support vehicle. We look forward to another great event next year.
Parent Opinion Survey Results Towards the end of Term 3, we received the results of the parent survey for Scotsburn. The results were very positive. On Tuesday 24
th October at 3.30pm,
we will have a parent catch up in Shaun’s room to discuss the results. We hope that a representative from all families can come along to contribute to the discussion.
Welcome Boys This term, we have had 3 new boys start at our campus. Noah Thurston (Gr 3), Mercury Wilson & Mavrick Howell (Gr 2) have all settled in very well. We would like to welcome them and their families into our community.
