EQUITY & INCLUSION Thank you to our staff and students who have been sharing their work surrounding Black History month in classrooms, on the announcements and throughout the school. During February we have celebrating inclusion and continuing our work with equity, but our work does not stop here. The end of the month is not the end of teaching about the contributions of Black Canadians in our classrooms. Black history is Canadian history. #celebrate #learn #honour #respect

Keep your Child Safe on the Internet Even without trying, children can come across materials on the internet that are obscene, disturbing, violent, hate-filled, racist or offensive in other ways. Here are some steps to help you ensure that your children use the internet as safely as possible:
make sure your children understand what sites are appropriate for them
keep the computer in a common area of the home like the kitchen or family room
discuss the meaning of an ‘unsafe’ site with your children
explain to your children what they should do if they reach an unsafe site make exploring new websites a family activity
pay attention to the games your children may download or copy
look into software or online services that filter out offensive materials or sites
It's important to review safety tips with children regularly. It is possible for children to meet unsafe strangers on the internet. Ensure your child knows the following rules:
never give out personal information (including name, address, phone number, age, school name or location)
never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet online
never use bad language or send mean messages
never respond to e-mail messages that make them feel confused or uncomfortable
tell an adult immediately if something on the internet makes them feel uncomfortable

OUR MARCH FOCUS IS: COOPERATION You are showing COOPERATION when you:
Participate with your best effort.
Assume positive intentions in others. Follow the rules established by the group.
Respect the ideas and feelings of others. Value the contributions of others.
Peel board celebrates public education during Education Week – April 8 to 12 The Peel District School Board will host hundreds of celebrations, activities and events across its 257 schools and worksites to celebrate Education Week from April 8 to 12. On April 15, the Peel board will host Showcase of Excellence, an evening to honour recipients for their outstanding contributions to public education. The theme for this year's Education Week is We Inspire.
In addition to inviting parents and community residents to visit their classrooms during the week, Peel schools are hosting open houses, plays/musicals, storytelling, environmental activities, awards assemblies, talent shows and much more.
More than 1,000 individuals will also be honoured during Education Week with Awards of Distinction for their contributions to their school or workplace. Schools and worksites will use social media to showcase their Education Week celebrations and events using the hashtag #WeInspire.
Some of the featured events at our school will include:
Primary/Junior Ed Camps: April 9th Kindergarten Ed Camp: April 11
Day of Pink: April 10 EML Parent Night (Open House): April 11
Book Swap: April 11 Closing Assembly: April 12
On-Going: Mural Painting Stay tuned for more information about these exciting events!
BOOK SWAP Save the date!
Please mark Thursday, April 11th as Janet McDougald Public School's Book Swap! Your child is invited to bring a once-loved book to school by April 5th that can be used in our Book Swap. Each participating student who brings a book will then select a book on April 11th.
This is a wonderful way to encourage students to re-use items instead of throwing them away and also to share an excellent book.
Books can be fiction or non-fiction but they must be in good to excellent condition!
If you are able to help out at our Book Swap, please call Mrs. Basa at extension 208!
EDCAMPS—Volunteers Needed
On Tuesday, April 9th we will be holding Ed Camps (elective activities) for our Primary and Junior students as part of our Education Week. Our Kindergarten
Ed Camp will be held on Thursday, April 11. If you have a talent, hobby or interest (e.g. yoga, painting, dance, baking etc.) that you would like to share with our students please contact Ms. Middleton, Ms. Karakostas, or Ms. Culbert to find out more about how you can support our elective Ed Camps.

END OF DAY PROCEDURES
If you are planning on picking your child up early or for an appointment please write a note in your child’s
agenda to let the teacher know. In addition, if your child usually rides the bus, but you are picking up your
child, please write a note in your child’s agenda.
We are experiencing a high volume of calls in the office informing us of changes to regular dismissal
procedures between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. It is difficult to ensure children are informed of plans in a short time
frame and it is disruptive to the classroom. Often children are in the hallways getting
ready near the end of the day and we are unable to reach them. The best way to ensure
your child is aware of you picking them up, is for you to meet them at their dismissal
door on time at 3:30 p.m. We understand emergencies do occur, but for all other
circumstances, please try to plan ahead. Thank you!
Don’t be Late!
If you and your child(ren) arrive after the 9:05 a.m. bell, please bring them through the front door and into the office to receive a late slip.
Late arrivals not only have a negative impact on your child’s learning and social skills, but they also disrupt the rest of the class and school routines. Make sure your child arrives before the 8:55 a.m. bell. Thanks!

PARKING
Please be aware that parking in the fire route along
our driveway could result in a ticket. Also, please do
not use the parking lot as a Kiss and Ride. Use the
allocated driveway.
February was Spotlight on Black History Month. The students on the Climate Team worked together to share
information with students in the school about famous Black Canadians and their contributions to Canada and the
world. They created a beautiful showcase in the front hall, as well as sharing information on the announcements.
We had the opportunity to have presenter Jim Arnold, from Folklore Music and Arts in our school. During his African
drumming presentation he shared with the students his drums, and many other instruments that he got from his many
trips to Africa. He engaged the students in storytelling, as well as teaching them to make a beat with the drums.
Next Up:
The Student Climate Team will be taking a trip to the food bank to
help give back to the community.
The Sharks spirit team will be receiving their Spirit Award of popcorn &
a movie on March 29th.
Our upcoming spirit day is Wacky Hat & Hair day on March 29th. This
has always been a popular and fun day for staff and students.
We’re looking forward to seeing that Husky spirit!

Sleep Tips for Parents, Children & Teens
From the PDSB Mental Health Resource Team
Many parents face difficulties getting their children back into regular sleep routines, especially after holiday breaks. Studies have shown that a lack of quality sleep in children can increase the likelihood of anxiety, depression, poor grades and school performance, and even physical pain. Research has proven that kids need a lot of sleep in order to function adequately during the day, and sleep deprived children often overcompensate for lack of sleep by becoming fidgety or even disruptive in school.
How much sleep does your child need every night?
Children ages 5-8 need the most sleep, requiring about 10-11 hours every night. Children ages 9-12 need between 9.5-10 hours nightly. And teenagers 13-18 need between 8.5-9.5.
Knowing how much sleep your child needs every night is key in establishing a proper bedtime. And it's important to remember that the above times aren't set in stone, but merely general approximations. Your child will have their own individual sleep needs, and you may need to fine-tune their bedtimes a little bit until you find your child less groggy and sleepy in the mornings, and more alert and aware.
Tips for getting your children on a regular sleep routine
Keep a regular bedtime schedule, including weekends.
Begin a relaxing bedtime routine such as baths, books, prayers, goodnights.
Turn off electronics at least an hour before bedtime.
Bedrooms should be cool, quiet, dimly lit, comfortable and associated with sleep.
Limit caffeine and sugar intake after lunch and none within three hours before bed.
Make sure they eat healthy and have regular exercise.
Communicate with your children about why regular bedtimes are important.
Practice these tips yourself and set a good example.

Peel Learning Foundation aims to create hopeful tomorrows for Peel board students
In partnership with the Peel District School Board, the Peel Learn-ing Foundation was created to enable Peel board students to achieve personal excellence by providing resources to help them overcome barriers.
In its first year, the foundation will support Peel board students through:
Student Emergency Needs program
Depending on the need, the foundation will support individual students with food and clothing, medical supplies, eyeglasses and transportation costs, or where there is an emergency situation that requires a compassionate response.
Student Backpack program
The foundation will provide backpacks filled with school supplies that students need to fully participate in regular classroom work. The backpacks will be provided to students in need in a respectful and confidential manner. They are tailored for students in kindergarten to grade 3, grades 4 to 8, and grades 9 to 12.
Individuals or organizations who are interested in learning more about and supporting the foundation can visit www.PeelLearningFoundation.org. You can also follow the foundation on Twitter and Facebook and use the hashtag #CreateHope to join the conversation.

MARCH NEWS FROM THE GREEEN TEAM
The Great Gulp
The Great Gulp is an annual event held every March to help create awareness about the importance of
Peel drinking water in our lives.
During the Month of March schools are invited to take part in ‘The Great Gulp’ by organizing a school-wide, synchronized
drink of tap water.
The event, along with additional tap water activities, creates a memorable learning experience where students have the
opportunity to learn about tap water in Peel.
All participating schools are entered into a draw to win a tap water refill station.
Our toast to tap water will be on Wednesday, March 20th. Please make sure you send in a reusable water bottle with your
child on this day.
Waste Audit
On Wednesday, January 23, we conducted our school waste audit. We noticed a surprising amount of
food waste and a lot of garbage items in the recycling bin. This month, we noticed the total amount of
garbage has slightly gone down and our sorting skills are improving but we still have room to improve on
reducing lunch waste. As we continue to work on being an ECO school, we are encouraging everyone to
continue to pack a waste less lunch every day.
WASTE-FREE LUNCH TIPS
Get children to help pack their lunches with healthy foods.
Only pack as much food as your child will eat.
Use a reusable lunch bag/box for carrying a lunch.
Use a refillable bottle for drinks
If you choose to use a single-serving container, please make sure it is recyclable.
Put sandwiches, muffins, etc. in reusable containers, instead of plastic bags. Label them with your child’s
name so they have a better chance of coming home.
Avoid pre-packaged, single-serve portions of snacks.
Put re-usable napkins in your child’s lunch box.
Thank you for all your support!
The Green Team
Lunchroom Supervisors Appreciation Day on March 1
In 2017, the board of trustees declared the first Friday in March as Lunchroom Supervisors Appreciation Day. This year, the recognition day falls on Friday, March 1, 2019. Take this opportunity to thank the important work of lunchroom supervisors, and their support and commitment to helping to ensure that students are safe and secure.
SEWING STUDIO—UPCOMING WORKSHOPS FOR K-5
Denise Wild's Sewing Studio is coming to our school with a specialty program like you’ve never seen before — a dynamic, engaging sewing workshop that breaks the creative mold! The Sew-ing Studio’s team of stereotype-busting mentors will guide each student through success, teaching the entire school how to sew with a sewing machine. Boys and girls, kindergarten to grade eight, that means you! Each child will gain confidence, develop their growth mindset, and complete a project from start to finish while being motivated and inspired. Not only does sewing get you hands-on and help you flex your creative muscles, it also helps you feel joyful, mindful, and focused. Each K-5 class will have a session on either March 18th, 19th or 20th. SEW COOL!

Smoking and Vaping Prohibited on School Property
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 (SFOA, 2017) came into effect on October 17, 2018. This law aims to protect the health of Ontarians by regulating the sale, supply and use of tobacco and vapour products (electronic cigarettes), and the smoking and vaping of cannabis.
Under the SFOA, 2017 it is illegal to smoke (tobacco or cannabis) or vape on:
School grounds (both inside the school and on the outdoor grounds, including the park-
ing lot and sports fields)
Public areas within 20 metres of school property.
New signs are being posted at our schools to notify users that smoking and vaping is prohibited in these areas.
The smoking and vaping prohibition is always in effect and applies to staff, students and visitors.
Region of Peel - Public Health enforces the smoking and vaping prohibition and has been working with school administrators to keep our schools smoke and vape free. Individuals found smoking and/or vaping in a prohibited area may be subject to a fine.
For more information on how the SFOA, 2017 applies to schools, contact Region of Peel - Public Health at 905-799-7700.
For more information on the health effects of smoking and vaping visit the Health Canada website: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/smoking-tobacco.html.
